Homemade Suja Sunset Protein smoothie
Hi friends! Howโs the day going so far? I confidently say itโs an improvement from yesterday. The Pilot is feeling much better (thank you for all of the get well wishes for him!), my eyes donโt feel like theyโre on fire anymore (three cheers), and we all slept in. Itโs like Christmas when that happens.
Thank you so much for sharing your healthy living budget tips this morning! There are so many amazing suggestions in there, and some that Iโm going to work on implementing in our house ASAP. As far as getting free workouts at home, I put together some videos for Glutinoโs blog with some favorite moves if youโd like to check it out! For food, I forgot to mention that a great money saver can be recreating restaurant or store-bought meals and snacks at home.
I did this one today with an at-home version of one of my favorite smoothies: Suja Sunset Protein!
This smoothie tastes like a delicious dessert and the nutrition stats are awesome (10g protein and 160 calories), which make it a great post-workout option. After scanning the ingredients, I realized they were mostly items we had here at home, so I decided to give it a try.
The result: a sweet and slightly spiced protein-packed vegan milkshake. You need this.
Hereโs the recipe if youโd like to give it a whirl!
Homemade Suja Sunset Protein Smoothie
An at-home version of a protein-packed vegan smoothie!
- Prep Time: 5
- Total Time: 5 minutes
- Yield: 2 1x
Ingredients
- 1 banana (even better: use frozen)
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1/4 cup raw cashews, soaked in water for at least 1 hour (can also use fresh coconut meat instead)
- 3 tablespoons hemp protein (or any protein powder you like!)
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender until smooth. Bottoms up!
You can see how the nutrition stats compare here! My version is higher in protein and fat (probably from adding the cashews) but less sugar. Not too shabby!
Have you made any amazing smoothies lately? Whatโs your go-to combo?
Hope you have a great night <3
xoxo
Gina
Check in with todayโs workout! Iโll be surprising a participant at the end of the month with a new lulu tank + copy of โHIIT It!”
Mmmm this looks delicious! I love cinnamon in my smoothies!
Just a question – I am reading more about Almond Milk being bad for the environment. Problem is I love it more than the alternatives – namely soy milk. Do you have any alternatives you recommend?
What’s wrong with almond milk?
Almonds just have a huge ecological footprint. They require tons of water…I was reading that it’s over one gallon per almond. And especially since most almonds in this country are grown in California, and California is experiencing an almost five year drought, it’s not exactly good practice that our country’s almond consumption has skyrocketed due to the new affection for almond milk. There’s more to it, like how wells for water need to be dug and are causing the earth to sink etc. etc. It’s good information and an interesting read, but it really sucks, cause I love almond milk! Ha.
By “earth to sink” I meant the ground is sinking…not that the earth is sinking through outer space hahah just wanted to clarify that
Yum! I love soaked cashews in recipes. They make everything so creamy dreamy.
yes! they give it an awesome texture
Sounds fabulous! Yum!!!!
This sounds delicious! And I’m glad everyone’s feeling better!
This looks delicious! I’m always looking for new smoothie recipes!
I’m late on commenting on this- but that looks delicious! I’ve recently gotten into the very boring habit of having the exact same smoothie every day (spinach, avocado, mango, banana, protein powder, water) so it’s nice to have an idea for switching it up. Plus I just bought a big bag of cashews- so I think I’ll be making this shortly ๐
Love the idea of adding soaked cashews to a smoothie/protein shake! I’m always looking for ways to make my shakes taste creamier/more decadent!
This sounds delicious!
This sounds so delightful. I’m all about cashews and hemp these days! In fact, all I use is hemp oil for salads and cooking lately!
That looks so good! My go-to these days has been frozen banana + frozen blueberries + nondairy milk + pb with hemp seeds and coconut flakes on top. Poor girl’s acai bowl? ๐
Yum. Breakfast these days is a glowing green smoothie – romaine, spinach, cucumber, Apple, cilantro, and lemon juice! It has a surprising amount of protein from the plants. ๐
What protein powder do you use these days, still Sun Warrior?
i was using shakeology until i got pregnant, and since then it’s been daily burn fuel 6 or the trader joe’s hemp protein
i love sun warrior, but my tastebuds are so wacky right now that the stevia taste is too much
Creamy chocolaty deliciousness come to me now!
Hi Gina ๐ I wondered if you could tell me how to access the workout calendars each month?
sign up for the newsletter (at the top of the blog or the right side bar) and you’ll get a new one each month ๐
Is your protein powder a vanilla flavor?
yes!
Fun to see the comparison! Your version sounds great…love cashews in smoothies ๐
Hi Gina ,
I’ve been struggling to find a good recovery drink to do in the morning after Orange theory workouts. What’s your preferred way to refuel after a workout?
Hi! What time do you usually go?
I usually go on Thursday mornings at 6:15 and Sunday mornings at 8:45. I went yesterday and don’t know if I worked too hard, but I was wrecked for the rest of the day – so tired and hungry. My orange was 24 so maybe I should dial back some, but I also thought a good recovery drink could work too?
Love bananas and vanilla, this looks YUMMY!
going to try it out today! thanks ๐
