Indian spiced chickpeas and potatoes

Hi friends ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you so much to those of you who have entered the dehydrator giveaway. The winner will be chosen on Monday from my list of OpenSky followers, so make sure youโ€™re signed up if you like the chance to win! Also, thank you from the bottom of my heart to those of you who supported Katieโ€™s Bake Sale for Japan. My macaroon winner will be hooked up, fo sho ๐Ÿ™‚

Even though Iโ€™m not working at lulu anymore, this week has been CRAZY. Even so, Iโ€™ve managed to ninja kick most of the to-do list and have been all kinds of organized up in herrre.

I even celebrated Indian Food Wednesdayโ€ฆ. on a Wednesday!

Who knew?! ๐Ÿ˜€

This chickpea and potato dish was super easy and was the perfect fuel for a super busy afternoon ๐Ÿ˜‰

All I did was steam 6 baby potatoes for 10 minutes:

Reserved the potatoes and in the same pot (on medium), sautรฉed 1/2 sweet onion and 2 cloves of garlic for 5 minutes.

To that, I added 1/4 t cumin, 1/4 t tumeric (a natural anti-inflammatory), 1/8 t garam masala, 1/8 t cinnamon, 1 can of diced tomatoes (drained), sea salt and pepper.

That cooked for about 10 minutes and then I stirred in the potatoes and 1/3 C chopped dried apricots.

channa (2)

At the last minute, a splash of fresh lemon juice and some mint for garnish.

This would have been lovely with some roti, brown rice or quinoa, but I decided to roll with gluten-free, vegan, RAW roti!

swiss chard

Also known as Swiss chard ๐Ÿ˜‰ Heh heh. <—my fave green!

So delicious rolled up in chard leaves:

Some more recent eats:

Goatโ€™s milk kefir, gluten-free granola + cinnamon

and two very scrumptious ballz ๐Ÿ™‚

Itโ€™s workout time over here, but I hope you have a lovely night!

See ya bright and early ๐Ÿ˜€ (after am walk time)

Just for fun: 3 Things I Didnโ€™t Know About the Pilot

Since the Pilot got home from Afghanistan โ€“it was this 3rd time over there- weโ€™ve finally gotten re-acquainted and settled back into a semi routine. All of the things I know, love and missed about the Pilot are still there, along NEW things that Iโ€™m just now figuring out.

1. He only eats half a cookie.

I discovered the above cookie in the fridge a few days ago. Half a cookie?! Who does that? I just donโ€™t understand. Itโ€™s totally cool if youโ€™re sharing with someone, but to eat half and forget about itโ€ฆ well I would never.

2. He always win.

I was the Fruit Ninja champion in our household, with a high arcade score of 504. He finds this out and spends days playing Fruit Ninjaโ€ฆ to eventually show his iPhone with the numbers โ€œ645โ€ on the screen. I had to wave the white flag at that one.

3. He calls his grey hairs โ€œGinasโ€.

Hahaha ๐Ÿ˜‰

What are some random things youโ€™ve learned about your significant other/friend/cat?

well maybe he’s leaving half a cookie for you! ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. The Teenage Taste on April 6, 2011 at 9:43 pm

Haha! I would never be able to only eat half a cookie. I would never be able to eat only one cookie for that matter! ๐Ÿ˜‰
I love playing Fruit Ninja! I think my high score is somewhere around the 500s so you both beat me! ๐Ÿ˜›

  3. Sarra on April 6, 2011 at 9:45 pm

o.m.g. the indian dish you made looks soooo goood, now I’m craving some! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on April 6, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Bahahaha! I was just teasing my husband about his grey hairs today. I’m afraid to ask what he calls them…

  5. Lindsay@livinglindsay on April 6, 2011 at 9:47 pm

Fruit ninja ๐Ÿ™‚ I love that game. How oddly addicting is it??? For us, it’s more of an Angry Birds competition. My husband is the better bird flinger…but I’m okay with that ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 9:54 pm

they’re both equally addicting! he’s playing angry birds as i type this haha

  6. kate@ahealthypassion on April 6, 2011 at 9:48 pm

Hahahah you cause his grey hairs no way! Love the macaroons they look delicious and I cannot believe how much money they raised, amazing ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Laury @ thefitnessdish on April 6, 2011 at 9:49 pm

Awww, that’s cute that he calls his gray hair “Gina’s” Only half a cookie??? They must not be very good cookies ๐Ÿ˜‰

  8. Lisa on April 6, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Total sin—leaving half a cookie. That’s actually illegal in my house.

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 9:55 pm

  9. Danielle (Shrinking and Studying) on April 6, 2011 at 9:52 pm

Hahaha “Ginas” You guys crack me up! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Lindsey on April 6, 2011 at 9:53 pm

Oh, that looks so yum. I need more indian food in my life. I also need to try the chard roll thing — i see it everywhere on the ‘net these days.

  11. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on April 6, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Your Indian food looks divine!!! I’m not sure how the Pilot only eats half a cookie… he must have superpowers or something. I wonder if he’s even able to only eat half a roon! Now that would take LOTS of self control!

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 9:56 pm

he *forgets* about food. he ate half an amazeball the other night and left the other half on the counter. i’ll never get it

  12. Chelsea on April 6, 2011 at 9:57 pm

I saw your macaroons going for $500!! That is so awesome, I would really love to try your roons but I just don’t think I can afford them! Also, for real who only eats 1/2 a cookie! LOL! My morning walk was ruined by 100 pound dog pulling me down a steep while chasing another dog! My “me time” walk needs to not coincide with his walks.

  13. Joelle on April 6, 2011 at 9:58 pm

I learned that he “cleans” the fridge every night and leave empty containers. It makes it very hard to know what we need.
Love the idea of labeling days like today is indian. Awesome idea which I’m incorporating right now. Puts the fun back in eating and shopping.

  14. Nicole on April 6, 2011 at 9:59 pm

My husband used to tease me about my love for Angry Birds…until he played it for an hour straight one day. We have been together for 7 years, and I just found out a few weeks ago that he knows how to moonwalk.

    • Fitnessista on April 6, 2011 at 10:00 pm

      hahah! so awesome

  15. MMiller on April 6, 2011 at 10:09 pm

Too funny about the pilot! My husband credits ME for most of his gray hairs! (And my kids for the other few!) After 25 years, there is not much that I don’t know about him!

  16. Leanne on April 6, 2011 at 10:18 pm

My fiance pointed out to me the other day that I use the phrase “a part of me thinks…” too often ๐Ÿ˜€ I guess I said it a couple times in a row because he finally said “How many parts of you are there?!” and started to laugh at me.

I like when those things happen… we’ve been together 4 1/2 years and we’re still learning about eachother!

  17. Holly @ The Runny Egg on April 6, 2011 at 10:18 pm

Jason is the same way!!! He can eat 1/2 of a cookie or a piece of candy and not eat the rest — what????? I do not get it. Oh and he “forgets” to eat all the time too. Crazy!

  18. Beth @ attempt balance on April 6, 2011 at 10:24 pm

I love the half cookie! My husband leaves almost empty boxes in the pantry, like a box of cereal with about a tablespoon left in it. I can’t seem to break him of the habit. Any suggestions?

  19. Lyss on April 6, 2011 at 10:38 pm

I could never leave half a cookie! No matter how full I am I always just shove it in ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 6, 2011 at 10:52 pm

i had indian food yesterday, i just couldn`t wait!

  21. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 6, 2011 at 11:04 pm

“weโ€™ve finally gotten re-acquainted and settled back into a semi routine.”– SO HAPPY for you; you two deserve it!

I saw your macs and price pack got 5 big ones. My little cookie dough balls got 2 benjamins. I was shocked. And sooo grateful to those who bid. My god..I was floored. Seriously. At everyone’s generosity. As I’m sure you were with what your macaroons fetched!

And yeah, Im sure the dehyd give away is just a tad popular ๐Ÿ™‚

Half a cookie. Only a man would do that. Women don’t do half of chocolate bars or half of cookies, ever ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. Amelia on April 6, 2011 at 11:22 pm

Kevin does that with any kind of sweet item. He claims that after a bite or two it’s “too rich” and can’t finish it. What?! I could eat a few ๐Ÿ˜‰

I still have a few more months before my hubby and I are under the same roof so I’m sure we will have to become re-acquainted again…let’s hope neither one of us has any weird habits to add. Does the Pilot comment on any of your habits that are weird to him?

  23. Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles on April 6, 2011 at 11:23 pm

Hahah – love the gray hair part! ๐Ÿ™‚
I’ve learned that my husband has terrible restless leg syndrome in the morning when he’s waking up – his feet just won’t stop moving!

  24. Mindy on April 6, 2011 at 11:35 pm

I’m Indian and grew up eating Indian food almost every day. Now I only eat it once or twice a week. It’s always interesting for me to see how others make it – your version looks healthier than what I grew up eating. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ve never had steamed potatoes before…I think I’m going to try it.

I don’t get why the pilot calls his grey hairs Ginas? It’s funny though!

  25. Ashley on April 6, 2011 at 11:40 pm

BAhahaaa…so cute! ๐Ÿ™‚ I have only played fruit ninja on the huz’s phone a few times, so my high score is like 74. hehe

  26. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on April 6, 2011 at 11:50 pm

    Hahahahaha #3 ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Sana on April 6, 2011 at 11:50 pm

    Bahahaha “Ginas” too funny!!!

  28. Heather (heathers dish) on April 7, 2011 at 12:03 am

Mahayana that last one made me laugh…now my hubby has a fun thing to call his grey hair!

  29. Ilana on April 7, 2011 at 12:19 am

haha…’ginas’ – my dad names his grey hairs after me. rando facts about my man – he eats lemons whole and cilantro by the bunch (sexy), he’s married to his job and his cell phone is subsequently a permanent part of his anatomy.

  30. kristina@beancakes on April 7, 2011 at 12:26 am

well that is just too cute!! that reminds me of my husband, the 1/2 cookie thing.
don’t get that at all!! this is why he remains so fit ๐Ÿ˜‰

  31. Courtney (greeneyedrunner) on April 7, 2011 at 12:31 am

“he calls his grey hairs Ginas” HAHAHA love you two!

  32. Danielle on April 7, 2011 at 12:44 am

My boyfriend does the same thing with iPhone games! He spent a good amount of time on his r&r beating my doodlejump score and promptly broke my fruit ninja score while on block leave last week!

  33. Namaste Gurl on April 7, 2011 at 12:46 am

I love swiss chard wraps. Favorite way to eat them is sweet- filled with nut butter, banana + apple, and cinnamon ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ve also done avocado- extreme YUM. ๐Ÿ™‚
Hahah, so funny about the pilot!

  34. kt on April 7, 2011 at 12:56 am

I would say that’s even less than half a cookie! I have a friend who does that- her fridge is always full of random treats with nibble marks in them. Wish I could do that.

Congrats on the epic macaroon bid!

  35. Jessica M on April 7, 2011 at 1:59 am

    LOL significant other/friend/cat

Actually my CAT has started doing the weirdest thing. At like 5am he will get on the bed, crawl over me, grab my eye glasses in his mouth, and then run off! He has done this soo many times. And he will bite them when they are on my face. I don’t get it. But now my glasses have bite marks. ;/

  36. Gina B on April 7, 2011 at 2:54 am

This was very cute, and I especially like that he calls his gray hairs “Ginas”…too funny.
I’ve been with my fiance for over 8 years, and just the other day I was so surprised by his reaction to my speeding ticket (and then the next week, to my written warning! Tough driving month!). He was so patient, and said, “These things happen”. I didn’t know how he’d react, but was relieved that he didn’t make me feel worse about my mistakes. ๐Ÿ™‚ Another reason I think he’s so wonderful!

  37. Ruth on April 7, 2011 at 3:56 am

Woooah! Eating half a cooking and then forgetting? That would never happen in my house. Would he notice if you ate it instead? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  38. Katie on April 7, 2011 at 6:40 am

Mike says his hair will be all gray soon because of me ; ) lol I told him it’s ok because he will still look good !

The cookie thing, Mike has done that before too, he says because he doesn’t want to feel guilt and eat the whole thing, it’s like, your a man, you can eat the 20 cookies and not have to worry, he eats so much and still does not gain weight!

  39. Tina on April 7, 2011 at 7:13 am

my cat didn’t read the obligate carnivore memo – he has a secret love of carbs. mind you, he even got doctor’s orders for me to cook for him. a vet dermatologist wanted me to feed him something he could have never possibly had before to work on his allergies – i cooked emu, rabbit and duck for him, and he turned up his nose on all occasions. but if i make a sandwich, he’s all over me for bits of crust or pierogi’s, crackers, etc., and he’s like “oooh baby!”. yup. go figure.

  40. Katie~ Run For The Bikini on April 7, 2011 at 7:22 am

Lol I eat half of things all the time. I break pieces off cause I just want a little.

  41. Parita @ myinnershakti on April 7, 2011 at 7:58 am

I love that he calls his gray hairs Ginas!! That’s so cute! And I love your Indian dish…it’s pretty unique ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. Jena on April 7, 2011 at 8:00 am

My man’s grey hairs totally came from Bananastan (since it’s bananas). With every tour he returns from, he has a few more. They’re sexy on him though.

Since he returned from his last tour in December, I’ve learned that he is a natural at yoga, and really rocks out the Body Flow classes – I couldn’t have been more surprised.

  43. shannonmarie on April 7, 2011 at 8:19 am

I can’t imagine only eating half a cookie. My hubby likes to eat the whole batch in one sitting. Seriously, he does, but you can’t tell by looking at him.

  44. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on April 7, 2011 at 8:22 am

Okay, maybe I’m a total freak, but I think my BF is really weird because he only likes nut butters ON something…he doesn’t even lick the knife he uses to spread it. I mean, how can someone do that?!

  45. Jamie@Healthywalk on April 7, 2011 at 8:23 am

That dish looks amazing! I’m definitely going to have to try that one soon!

My boyfriend is THE pickiest eater I know. Seriously, he could live off of chicken nuggets and fruit snacks for the rest of his life. It always amazes me when he likes something that I would have never guessed he would enjoy (like broccoli, pickles, or bananas.)

  46. RhodeyGirl on April 7, 2011 at 8:38 am

hahaha he calls them Ginas.. LOVE that!!!

That Indian dish looks really yummy!

  47. jenna on April 7, 2011 at 8:41 am

hahah..cute post gina! ๐Ÿ™‚ your indian dish looks supa yummy!!

  48. Kristin (Cook, Bake, Nibble) on April 7, 2011 at 8:46 am

I just learned a few months ago my hubby is a serious cat-man. He loves them, and they love him! I had no idea. I always grew up with them and liked them, and was ok when he said he wanted a pet that we get a cat (they’re easy) but we just got our second one a few days ago! I said two is enough! haha ๐Ÿ˜€

I love that he calls his grays “Ginas” bahaha!

  49. Stephanie on April 7, 2011 at 9:09 am

Bahahahahaha! Calling his grays Ginas is beyond hilarious.

I found out the other day that my husband (of 3 years!) has never owned a dresser. He apparently just used those rubbermaid drawers because they came in “cooler colors”. And then I clear out one of my drawers for him….and then he wants 2 more. haha

  50. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on April 7, 2011 at 9:09 am

He sounds like a great guy and it seems like you have such a fun relationship. Maybe he could teach others (read: me) how to only eat half a cookie?
