Planes, things and reps
“Oh, I smell you’ve been cheating on me.”
As soon as Bella finished running laps in excitement when I picked her up from madre’s yesterday, she stopped to smell the lab scent that covered me, belonging to Jeni’s dog, Whiskey, who I canoodled with all weekend. (Had to type out the full story because it doesn’t quite work to say Bella could smell Whiskey all over my pants.) Even though she was trying to figure out who I cheated on her with, her little tail looked like it was going to shake off her body. I was so happy to see her.
It was quite a whirlwind travel day.
You know the saying “you only get what you can handle?”
Well I’m a believer that after you prove you can handle something, it gets exponentially more challenging.
Our first flight to Las Vegas was perfection. Liv was a champ, the flight was quick and uneventful, and it gave me a lot of hope, since we will most likely be stationed away in the future and travel together to visit family and friends, especially if the Pilot is deployed. Well, since the first flight was so easy, the flight back had to be more exciting, right?
We were delayed and stuck on the plane for 2 hours while they tried to figure out an AC thing that was broken. After that, we had to switch planes, finally left and arrived in Tucson much later than anticipated. It could have been a total fiasco, but instead, Oliv was all smiles:
babbled and belly-laughed to the people around her, and napped when we finally took off.ย
The flight also restored a lot of my faith in humanity. It seemed like everyone was so nice, especially the passengers nearby who were smiling and talking to Oliv, the sweet couple who carried my diaper bag from one plane to the next, the woman sitting in our row who just wanted to be close to her (she has 11 grandchildren), and the awesome flight attendants, who brought Liv water and a bag of ice to keep her bottles cold and fresh. Maybe it was directly correlated to the fact that she was so happy, but I was thankful for their kind gestures. Internally, I was ready for things to go haywire (I get antsy being stuck on a non-moving plane, so I figured she’d feel the same way) but it was totally fine, just a long day.
A trip to the store to get essentials for the night:
and this morning, a semi-homemade quick breakfast after sleeping in.
This morning at work, one of my friends was talking about static rep training- has anyone heard of this?
You can read more info about it here, but basically your workout consists of one repetition, at an extremely heavy weight in the contracted position of whatever exercise you’re doing. It’s interesting to me because it’s unlike any method I’ve ever tried in my training, and it almost sounds too good to be true. Increase lean muscle by only doing 1 rep? Amazing, especially if you’re trying to get in effective training in a short amount of time. My gym sessions lately have been max 45-minutes (weights and HIIT) so after doing some more research and talking to my friend, it’s something I might try this week. If you’ve tried it, let me know what you think!
Back to work for the afternoon. Hope everyone is having a happy humpday <3
xoxo

Something to do:ย It’s steady state cardio day! What workout did you choose?ย
ย
Yikes! They should have let you sit in the airport while they figured out what was wrong! I’m so glad Livi was fine throughout the entire process. I’m not sure I would have done so well!! haha
Seriously! I would’ve been getting so antsy. I get so anxious having to sit on airplanes while things get sorted out.
I love that dark chocolate was an essential!!
always.
LOL at the Whiskey story…
And sooo nice that everybody was so cute to Oliv and you.
You must be one proud momma!
Olivia is a traveling champ! I could learn a thing or two from her, I get super nervous and crabby!
it’s funny because i usually do too, but for her sake, i just had to be calm, patient and go with it
I’m so impressed with you both! Livi seems like such a sweetheart. We just had a pretty taxing plane trip over the weekend, so I especially feel you on this one. It makes such a difference to have people who like babies and offer support around you!
Glad you had a wonderful time in Las Vegas and welcome home!
being stuck on a non-moving plane, 100% trapped! on the tarmack is one of the most frustrating things ever – even for adults! Glad to hear Oliv’s a champ (and you too, mama!)
Glad the plane ride went well! ๐
That static rep training sounds awesome! I’m always looking for quick and effective workouts (I get bored SOOO easily). Question: will doing this with a heavy weight cause injury, or since you’re essentially only doing one rep , the risk of injury decreases? Also, do you think it would bulk women up?
๐ Thanks!
i have no idea! i’ll be able to get a better feel for it once i give it a try
Did you try this? I am a little confused as to what a negative is…
i did try it a little last week- not something i would regularly do in my training.
Katie, it is impossible for any type of weight training to “bulk women up”. We lack the testosterone. If you lift weights and find yourself getting bulky, it’s 100% because your diet isn’t right and you’ve just gained fat on top of muscle.
Best feeling in the world = watching your dogs tail wag out of control when you get home <3
I agree! My dog gets so excited that her whole body wiggles haha.
So happy you had a successful trip home! That is so great that everyone was so kind on the plane!!!
Dark Chocolate is always a staple and must-have. I like your style!!
always have it on hand, or it’s emergency mode over here
Glad it went ok. She seems like a happy little baby so I’m not surprised! Sucks about the AC. The last time I flew alone the planes AC was broken and we were sweating the whole time. The whole time I thought “what the hell!!!! They could have had us switch planes!!!” (I apologize for the swearing). Horrible. But I got through it. Hope you had a good trip.
Your eggs always look o yummy. What’s your secret? Thanks!
make food for a baby while making eggs, forget to flip them, flip them and eat haha
That’s the third time I’ve heard when people forget about their eggs cooking…. The consistency is perfect. All I need is a distraction:) lol
I’m curious to hear what you think about static rep training after you try it out. I have never heard of it.
I just got back from shopping at Trader Joe’s. They had a new dark chocolate–so I had to buy it. It’s 70% cocao, organic and stone milled (?). The package refers to it as Mexican-style chocolate. Have you seen it? I can’t wait to try it!
Hmmmm that static rep thing definitely sounds interesting! I’ve been hearing about it recently as well….but I’d have to agree with you…almost sounds to good to be true? Maybe just another gimmicky workout trend….
I’ve tried the static rep workouts, but only for a month. It’s surprising, but I did notice that I was able to get stronger! Workouts were like 15 minutes. The longest part was loading the racks with all the weights you use! I just can’t put all my faith in it to do it long-term, but I’d love to see what it does for muscle growth and development. I’d rather train for physique rather than strength. You’ll have to make sure that you do the workout at a time when your gym isn’t too full. You are constantly moving to other machines and you will be a plate hog ๐ Can’t wait to hear about what kind of looks you get while your doing this! It’s hilarious to see people’s reaction ๐
I’ve read a lot about static rep workouts and would love to try it. Could you post a sample workout for beginners? That would be awesome!
Glad your flight back went well with all the delays. Liv is such a happy girl which is obviously a sign of loving parents ๐
I like to add a static rep at the end of my sets. For example I will do 3-4 sets of bicep curls and add a static bicep curl hold (usually preacher curl style) and hold a few times for around 30 seconds. I think it has really helped with my strength gains as well as muscle definition…my biceps pop now!! Sometimes I will do a cable bicep curl hold and increase the weights till my biceps are exhausted (it feels “safer” to do this on the cable machine than with heavy dumbbells). I would definitely recommend adding in a couple of static holds to your next routine!
ohhh i like this idea! will definitely give it a try next weights sesh
Aw she is so cute! What a happy baby ๐ I’m glad that she was chill because flights delayed are stressful enough on your own! I’ve never heard of this type of training but I definitely want to try it out!
Glad Livi did so well!
Oooh awesome you have a very content little doll! I was all strength training today!
I’m so glad the trip home worked out too, even if you weren’t moving at the rate you would have liked! I told my husband about how I’ve been reading on so many blogs lately about people getting dirty looks while their babies cried and we couldn’t believe that! It’s a baby! Some people can just be so rude, so I’m really glad you got a nice bunch of people on your plane with you. =]
I don’t mind babies being loud. Sometimes I have to stop myself from going over and trying to distract the baby, play with it or whatever (usually the parent is looking way stressed out by that point). I never do it because erm… that might come across as strange?
OMG, her smile! Seriously? ๐
best thing in the world
Static rep training is brutal! Also, although they say one rep, you do need to warm up the muscle group or there is a big risk of injury. You have to use a really heavy weight, and your muscles will tell you the next day if you did it right. I can’t do it any more because previous joint injuries just make it too risky to load up to that degree.
Ugh, stuck on a plane! When we flew back (living in the UK at that time) from Amsterdam there was ‘weather’ and the plane was diverted to Leeds along with a bunch of other planes. The idea being they would put us on coaches back to Manchester. It was stinking hot, no water and they did not have enough bridges and steps to offload all the planes. After four hours on the plane, the weather cleared and we flew back to Manchester, everyone sweaty and sticky. Ah, travel stories, nothing better.
Isn’t she just an angel!
i bet a lot of people on the plane appreciated that they had such an adorable, happy baby to watch!!! it’s always so boring and annoying being stuck on the tarmac! glad olivia is such a great flier! maybe it’s in her genes! ๐
Static rep training isn’t anything new, but it’s not going to dramatically give you results as the article suggests. It is just a tool, like training to failure, drop sets or supersets, and you should therefore not complete every single exercise in this manner or you run the risk of injury and overtraining. One set per workout is enough. Isometric training can be very taxing on the nervous and cardiovascular systems, as it interferes with blood flow and causes significant drops and rises in blood pressure.
oh my gosh, sorry for the horrible day of travel!!
that’s a really crazy training method and it’s new to me too! i’ll have to read more, but like u said at first glance i was thinking, “WHAT?! one rep…that’s ridiculous!” haha…but i’ll have to try that out. that said, i’m more of a cardio junkie…actually runner addict…i’d rather do that but i do force myself to do the weightwork too! ๐
I’m happy to hear that you had an (almost!) uneventful flight back home! I’m not surprised that your Livi was as peaceful on the way home as she was on the way there. She’s happy because she’s so loved!
And ONE rep? Gotta go read that link! Treadmill was my steady state cardio today, btw! ๐
Aww it sounds like you had such a great flight experience (other than the delay!). That’s awesome that everyone was so friendly and helpful. ๐
I’ve never heard of static rep training. It’s almost hard to believe that 1 rep can be effective – but I’m interested to hear what you think if you give it a try!
Olivia is just too cute! I’m glad your flight wasnt too bad. I’m thinking of taking a vacation next year with my husband and children but with three children aged 3 and under, I’m wondering if a flight would be a nightmare.
I love your coffee mug too! ๐
Awe, who could be cranky to that cute face! I have to say, when I’m traveling, the way I feel about having kids on the plane is directly related to whether or not the parent is actually trying to keep their kid under control. I got so annoyed the last time I flew and a 1.5 year old baby screamed the entire 4 hour flight while her mother just ignored her and read a magazine. I know I’m not a parent so I try not to judge, but!!!!! Anyway, when I see a mother with her little one who is super attentive and engaged, even if the baby is crying, I just feel bad for both of them. I try and smile and wave at the baby if I’m near by but I’ve never thought of offering to carry a diaper bag for someone. I’d be afraid they would think I would steal it. But maybe I will next time since it sounds like that was helpful for you.
I’m also interested to hear what you think about these static reps! I am very curious about this idea – I feel like it could also potentially cut down on the risk of injury for some moves since there will be fewer movements with a heavy weight. That’s something I’m all over since I hurt my knew last year!
haha i feel like my dogs do the same thing when i come back after visiting another dog. Glad you had a great trip!
The static rep workout is very interesting! It has always been ingrained in my head to make sure cardio is involved with lifting… hard to think of not doing it! Would be very easy to do while watching the Olympics ๐
