NEW hotel room circuit

Whenever I get back from vacation, I’m always kind of scared to resume my full teaching schedule again. Even after just a week off, I can feel the difference and am usually sluggish, especially during Zumba. This week: not the case at all. Maybe 9 days of carb loading in Italy will do that for ya? ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m also still convinced that my shorter hair has made me faster, haha.

Zumba was a blast, I taught a sweaty Tabata class, and felt great for our track pyramid workout with my running group.

Despite the areas where I’m recovering well post-vacay, others are still catching up.

Smoothie 1 of 1 2

Fail alert: aim before you shoot.

-1/2 banana

-1 T chia seeds

-handful of super greens

-1 pack of Jay Robb egg white protein (I’m burned out on Sun Warrior so I’ve switched to Jay Robb to change things up)

-1 C frozen mixed berries

-1 T carob powder

-1 t camu powder

-1 C almond milk

Despite having to clean up some of it, it was amaaaaaazing.

Farm box 1 of 1 2

(This week’s little farm box! They were out of a few things, but I’m excited for some fall squash dishes!)

A few people have asked for the circuit workout I did while we were on vacation. It was my only official workout while we were there, less than 30 minutes (easy to do while the Pilot was catching up on emails or showering), and gave me a quick cardio/strength blitz. I’m convinced that 30 minutes is all you really need, especially if you’re moving the entire time and make it count.

Equipment: a heavy backpack and a timer.

Here’s the workout:

Let me know if you give it a try!

Do you work out on vacation? What’s your favorite do-anywhere workout move? I love to hate the plank. There are so many ways to switch it up, and it’s a great total-body strengthener.

Here are some posts with vacation and at-home workout options:

Yayyyy, I’m so excited you posted this! It’s pouring rain here today and I am feeling an at-home workout instead of venturing outside to get to the gym. Will definitely be doing at least 1 of these this afternoon. Perf!

    Cool workout! Thanks!

Looks pretty intense for a vacation workout you are dedicated.

Glad to know you were able to jump right back on the fitness wagon after getting back! I always feel sluggish after coming home as well.

Hahah that food photography fail happens to me ALL THE TIME since my site is half about food. I really need an assistant to come help me out ๐Ÿ˜‰

    Have a great day!

  4. Sara @ LovingOnTheRun on September 12, 2013 at 10:36 am

Love this workout! Staying fit and doing exercise while on vacation can be tough – Great job!!

  5. Lisa on September 12, 2013 at 10:48 am

Since all my workouts are done at home I love these types of workouts.
Especially intervals like these so it feels like it’s done much faster:)
I definitely try to work up a bit of a sweat while on vacation, whether it’s walking, running, or doing something fun like a new fitness class. They’re always fun to try out in a new place.

  6. Jen on September 12, 2013 at 11:07 am

What does the Pilot do while you’re doing this? ๐Ÿ™‚ Just curious…. ๐Ÿ™‚ I don’t think I’d want to do a workout while my husband was watching. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on September 12, 2013 at 1:54 pm

I’ll start while he’s in the shower and finish while he’s watching tv or checking emails. It’s not like he’s sitting around watching me ๐Ÿ™‚ that would feel weird

  7. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on September 12, 2013 at 11:12 am

Well the walking you did also counts as a workout too! ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually love to workout on vacation! Even on my honeymoon I hit the gym because how bad can a gym overlooking the Hawaiian ocean be? I usually shorten my workouts but I always feel like less than one hour a day is NBD for me and it helps me relax and enjoy my vacation even more!

  8. Ashley @ Life and Fitness on September 12, 2013 at 11:16 am

I’m always trying out new hotel workouts whenever I travel. For cardio I’d rather be out exploring and walking. I love how you can do so much with just your body weight.

  9. Holly on September 12, 2013 at 11:27 am

I love Jay Robb’s protein powder! I use the whey version (never tried the egg white one), but love the texture of it. Can’t go back to sun warrior now although I wish the whey was gluten free, but at least the ingredient list isn’t crazy.

Ahhh I love the energy after carbo loading for a few days! Glad you were able to get back in the swing of things easily. This hotel circuit is perfect for those attending HLS this weekend, good timing ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll save it for next time I travel!

  11. Monique @ Burpeestobubbly on September 12, 2013 at 12:22 pm

That’s a really fun looking workout! and different than I usually do when i’m traveling. thanks!

  12. Andrea @ The Fit Scoop on September 12, 2013 at 12:27 pm

My favorite do-anywhere workout moves are wall sits. You can vary them by doing them single-leg, holding weights, doing them on your toes, etc. They are also great for active recovery between upper-body strength moves!

I love at-home workouts, and def try to sneak them in while I’m on vacay otherwise I feel super sluggish. Thanks for sharing!

This hotel room circuit comes at a perfect time because I’m traveling for business next week. This will be perfect!

  15. Megan (The Lyons' Share) on September 12, 2013 at 12:52 pm

Love this! I travel every week for work, so hotel room workouts are my friend :). Thanks!

  16. Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit on September 12, 2013 at 12:53 pm

That looks killer! I workout in the fitness center at work during my lunch hour and this will be perfect!!!

  17. Tracy on September 12, 2013 at 1:27 pm

That looks like a great workout! Love the idea of using a backpack for weights.

How is the Jay Robb egg white protein??

  18. Crystal on September 12, 2013 at 1:42 pm

Love it! I usually try to find a hotel with a good gym, but we’re going to Maui in a few weeks and I don’t think our hotel this time has a gym. Of course, we’ll be walking, hiking, kayaking, biking…but I might squeeze in a hotel circuit if I get a chance! It’ll help work off some of the amazing food we’ll be eating ๐Ÿ˜‰

  19. Mila on September 12, 2013 at 1:45 pm

Gina – that pouring-fail photo cracked me up! ๐Ÿ™‚ Like – still laughing out loud!

Love workouts with minimal equipment I can take on vacation!

  21. Kari on September 12, 2013 at 3:11 pm

Love this post! I’m definitely gonna have to try the traveling exercises. As well as in my own home when I have a little downtime. Keep the good posts coming girl! Love them ๐Ÿ™‚

Looks like a great workout! I love these kind of functional workouts for while traveling. I’m definitely writing this one down to put in my notebook.

Gina–where in Tucson do you get your farm box? Looks great!

  25. Christina R on September 12, 2013 at 7:57 pm

That sounds like a great workout! How do you like the Jay Robb protein powder in terms of nutritional stats?

  26. Paige@FitNotFad on September 13, 2013 at 12:06 am

Planks are the BEST but also the worst! So tough and easy to get discouraged or distracted mentally but such a good exercise. Great workout!!

  27. CourtStar @ StarSystemz on September 13, 2013 at 3:13 am

I used to love Jay Robbs egg white but found one I liked even more its called Healthy N Fit Nutritionals Egg White Protein, I found it to taste better and it had better ingredients! I always workout on vacation and try to do a HIIT run around the city to sitesee! Thanks for sharing ๐Ÿ™‚ Love + shine CourtStar

  28. Lucie@FitSwissChick on September 13, 2013 at 5:05 am

    Love that workout!
I always have my TRX with me or do Tabata’s and sprints outdoors. Plankwork, Lunges or pushups are great to do anywhere too!

  29. Liz on September 13, 2013 at 8:31 am

I try to work out as often as possible on vacations. Not because I’m worried about gaining weight, but because I start feeling gross after too many days without exercise, and I’d rather not spend my vacay feeling gross, ya know? ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Karen @ Runner Girl Eats on September 13, 2013 at 8:47 am

Great workout! I did a quick 30 minute workout yesterday that had my heart pumping and muscles burning. It doesn’t take long to get in a good session!

  31. Jamie Carbaugh on September 13, 2013 at 10:31 am

So, I read “aim before you shoot” and then I saw the picture of you pouring something WAY past the intended glass and I thought, “MAN! She’s really IS a HORRIBLE shot when it comes to pouring!”

and then I put two and two together.
It’s been a late night, but it made me laugh!

  32. Amelia on September 13, 2013 at 10:47 am

Gotta try some sun-warrior eventually though, it looks like a less scary alternative to the muscle-milk my sister gets.

  33. Alex @ Kenzie Life on September 13, 2013 at 1:50 pm

I also love to hate plank, but I try to go for a short run on a treadmill at the gym of whatever hotel I’m staying at. Sometimes I bring those yoga mat gloves with me and if I’m super motivated, I pop in a yoga dvd on my laptop and crank out a few poses.

  34. Courtney Tucker on September 15, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Love that picture of the badly-aimed pour. Hilarious! Thanks for keepin’ it real!

  35. Cristal on December 18, 2013 at 3:33 pm

Hey Gina, I am doing this workout tomorrow. Can you explain what the “Knee Tuck Hip Swing” looks like?

    Thank you!

  36. Erica Meyer on July 29, 2017 at 4:29 am

Hi! I know this is an older post, but just wanted to say thanks for sharing such a great workout! I’m on vacation in Lake como w no hotel gym and streets that are less than ideal for running outside. I did a quick search for hotel workouts and came across yours (I am a blog reader and thought u might have posted something). This workout had me sweating up a storm!! Such a great way to burn off all the pasta I have been eating. Thanks again! ๐Ÿ™‚
