Toddler hairstyles and the froggy voice
The other day, I was looking for some hair inspiration for fun things to do with Liv. Her hair is getting so long, and I have a blast braiding and ponytail-ing it. It’s kind of an athletic event, because she’s usually walking around and playing while I follow, my hands intertwined in her hair and braiding as quickly as possible.
When I Googled, some hairstyles looked a little painful,
and those belonging to girls who own something called a flipper.
For Livi, my main goal is to keep her hair out of her face, and create a little staying power to last the carseat ride. Getting both of us dressed and out the door is an act of God itself, so I’m not about to complicate things with intricate hairstyles, as cute as they are. Her hair usually takes around 60 seconds to do– it’s all I’ve got!

Some tips:
-Practice braiding! My mom taught me how to braid my doll’s hair when I was three, so I’ve been doing it for a long time. I practice on my hair pretty often, which makes braiding others’ hair a piece of cake.
Since I’m a quick braider, I can do Liv’s hair before she gets too bored standing still, or while she’s walking around.
-Sometimes, I’ll do her hair after she finishes breakfast and is still in the high chair. This is the easiest way, since she’s entertained by Super Why! for a second and then all we have to do is get dressed for the day.
-Become friends with the twist. This is one of my favorite strategies to keep her hair out of her face and can go into ponytails, a bun or even just a clip. Fast, pretty and super simple!
This morning, she rocked two braids -she calls them her “Dorothy braids”- and was eating a snack. I took a little video of her singing, just to share how funny she is. She does this thing called the froggy voice and it cracks me up every time.

Oh my goodness…no words! She’s adorable. I’m jealous at your braiding skills….I never learned 🙁 My curly hair is way too thin for braids anyway. Her hair’s getting so long too!

I can hardly do my own hair! I tried to do my little cousin’s hair once and she wasn’t happy – I didn’t want to make it tight but it would keep falling out!
toooooooo cute! I need to practice my braiding for the little girls I babysit- their hair is always full of paint, food, etc… braids would be a big improvement haha

OMG! She is so adorable! When my daughter was little, the best I could do was the pony tail with a clip to keep the bangs out of her eyes! I only wish I could have braided that fast!
She’s so adorable! I love her froggy voice, but I especially like the part when she tells you she loves you. I think that’s one of the best gifts to get from your child! 🙂

she speaks so well! my little one is 4 months behind Liv and starting to use her words more. today she tried mimicking me all day and I am shocked each time. it’s exciting. but I have tried braiding and it just does not work out. her hair in the back is so curly I haven’t learned to do much with it but thankfully the curls are super cute and can be kept they way they are. 🙂
Mimicking is great! Keep talking to her and encouraging her to mimic you! Pause after you speak and give her a chance to “respond.” (Sorry, I’m a speech pathologist!).
Gina, that “froggy” voice she is doing is called glottal fry. It’s very common for young college-aged women to go into glottal fry at the end of sentences (in American English at lease). She’s super cute btw!
You’re lucky Livi’s hair is straight and silky! My mom always kept my hair long, but since it’s coarse and used to fall into ringlets (until I decided at age 8 that I wanted to look like Sandy at the end of Grease and chopped it all off…), it took about an hour to brush out regularly.
