When the stars don’t align

Morning <3 Happy Sunday!

Did you watch the AZ game last night? I can’t even talk about it. I’m not sad we lost -ok, a little sad. but it had to happen sometime- but super sad that Ashley’s foot might be broken. ๐Ÿ™ We need him.

The stars didn’t align with our b-ball game, and definitely didn’t during yesterday’s long run.

9miles

I set out for a 9-miler, when I walked out the door, I was greeted by a cascade of clouds and drizzle. After an entire week of gorgeous sun, the rain decided to finally make a stop here in T-town. Since it wasn’t pouring, I figured it would either start pouring and I’d come back home, or it would eventually clear up. I decided to go for it.

It spit on me the entire time, and I was surprised by how great I felt during the run, rain and all. Credit goes to an awesome playlist:

Rainy long run playlist

and the CW-X pants. They help support my knee, and I’ve found that they also help with post-run soreness. I don’t feel sore at all today.

Usually I HATE running in the rain -especially when my shoes and socks are soggy- but it was kind of refreshing. I finished the 9 miles, came back home for a quick shower, and we all went out to celebrate Kyle’s birthday with breakfast.

Here’s what’s on the tentative menu this week:

-Lots of recipe testing! I have 40 new recipes I want to go through this week (+ distance testers helping with an additional 20!) so I’ve already enlisted some friends to come over and pick up the goods.

-Plan and prep:

Amazeballs (and flavor variations)

Chop veggies for salads

Make Paleo bread

Make shredded chicken

Fitness-wise, I’m going to be testing out the Winter Shape Up Week 4 workout. It’s pure cardio! (It’s going to be INTENSE to say the leastโ€ฆ)

If you’re following the challenge, be sure to check in tomorrow morning for this week’s workout video, form cues and giveaway!

Here’s the schedule for this week, which you can shuffle around as needed.

Workouts

Week 2 schedule

Are you watching the Superbowl today? Making anything fun?

Outdoor workout in the rain: love it, or loathe it?

Hope you have a wonderful day <3

See ya later with some weekend pics!

Don’t you just love “Turn Down for What”โ€ฆI can’t help but booty shake a little at the gym haha! I try to run in any weather, except super hot, humid South Carolina weather. I’d like to avoid passing out pleaseโ€ฆ.

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:55 pm

omgggg it makes me want to club dance haha

  6. Chicago Jogger on February 2, 2014 at 11:49 am

I agree I usually don’t love running in the rain, but sometimes it IS refreshing! I like that you ended that run with “Roar” – for some reason that song really gets me going on the treadmill!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:55 pm

same! it’s a nice little power song at the end

  7. Kate on February 2, 2014 at 11:58 am

I wish I could say that I’m sorry about the Wildcats, buuuuuuut, I’m a Syracuse fan. ๐Ÿ™‚ Arizona losing was icing on the cake after Cuse’s win over Duke last night. Go Orange!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:55 pm

boooooo. it was a close game for you guys, too!

      • Kate on February 3, 2014 at 9:21 am

I know! I pretty close to cried when Duke tied it at the end of regulation. It was an awesome game…saw a tweet from Dick Vitale that it was one of his top 5 ever!

As a rule I avoid hiking in potentially rainy weather, but during a couple long hikes here in Sedona last summer, I was caught in a few rapid onset monsoons 4 or 5 miles from my car and really enjoyed jogging back to my car in the light/medium/thundery rainfalls.

A big bonus was seeing the beautiful waterfalls created on the red rocks.

Love the playlists, there’s a few I’m going to check out right now!

  9. Rachel @ Betty LIVIN on February 2, 2014 at 12:10 pm

Running in the rain is only nice when you live in a warm climate and the rain isn’t icy cold. I loved work outs in Hawaii but here in Canada is it rains, it is way too cold.

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:54 pm

that’s totally true. cold rain is horrible

  10. Christine@ Apple of My Eye on February 2, 2014 at 12:22 pm

Delicious looking recipes! And great job on your 9 miler in the rain. Super impressive! That playlist must have helped a ton, I’m going back right now to pick up some new songs!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:54 pm

hope you found some new good ones ๐Ÿ™‚

  11. Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs on February 2, 2014 at 12:52 pm

I don’t mind running outside in a bit of drizzle, but anything more than that is just unpleasant. Soggy socks/shoes are the worst!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:54 pm

totally the worst. hope you had a great weekend!

  12. Stephanie @ Whole Health Dork on February 2, 2014 at 1:35 pm

My husband loves running in the rain (when it’s above 60F). Like you said, he finds it incredibly refreshing. He’s even been knowing to go out at the tail end of a hurricane. Crazy guy. I don’t mind the rain as long as it’s not down-pouring, but I don’t get excited at the prospect either.

  13. Tracy on February 2, 2014 at 1:45 pm

Proud of you for making it through the rainy run! I hate being in the rainโ€ฆ.maybe because I live in Kansas Cityโ€ฆ.seems like rain is usually cold rain!

Speaking of Kansas, my Jayhawks lost yesterday too ๐Ÿ™ Bad day for our college b-ball teams!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:53 pm

wahhhh ๐Ÿ™ it was a bad day for that!

  14. Abi@AbsofSteel on February 2, 2014 at 2:10 pm

I’m making some “healthier” fudge for the game today. I love running in the rain but usually only when I’m in the mood to go phone free and forget about the time and speed.

  15. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on February 2, 2014 at 2:27 pm

At least your run was nice despite that pesky rain! I don’t think I could run in the rain. I’d be scared of getting sick afterwards!

  16. Lindsey on February 2, 2014 at 2:50 pm

I love rain only if its when I’m done, it’s almost like a shower of victory! Haha

  17. Sarah @ hairway to vegan on February 2, 2014 at 3:19 pm

The best rainy run Ive had was when I was living in San Francisco, near golden gate park. My boyfriend and I ran through the park at nighttime in a drizzly rain out to a fancy-ish bar, got martinis in our wet running gear and then ran home! It ended up being a lot of fun.

  18. Lucie@FitSwissChick on February 2, 2014 at 3:24 pm

I love running in the rain when I’m accordingly equipped ๐Ÿ™‚ it’s especially nice cause there’s hardly anyone out there.

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:52 pm

      yeah it was pretty peaceful!

  19. Amber Schcumann on February 2, 2014 at 3:59 pm

So the other night, I opened the front door to start my run. And saw a flash of lightening. And rain. No excuses! About 15 minutes into my run, I’m wondering why my tracking app hasn’t made any notifications… I look down and it is set for “gym workout”. Whaaaaaaat. Flash goes more lightening and down comes more rain.

I redeemed myself this morning with a distance PR 8miler. Never in my life have I been able to do more than 6. BAM!! Now bring on the beer and munchies!!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:51 pm

      whoo hoo!! great job!!

  20. Priya on February 2, 2014 at 5:02 pm

hey gina! i have a running question!

before that long of a run , do you eat a small breakfast or take a shot on the run? or eat a little extra the night before? just wondering since you said you went out for breakfast after.
im trying to up my distance and have been wondering what i’ll do food wise, so thanks in advance!!

    • Fitnessista on February 2, 2014 at 6:51 pm

i have a banana with sun butter on it. it’s just the right amount to energize me for the run, and i’ll have shot blocks or honey stingers at miles 4 and 8

  21. Mia Gabrielle on February 2, 2014 at 6:21 pm

Congratulations on the 9-miler! And thanks so much for posting your playlist! I haven’t been good about keeping up with recent music so I always appreciate some suggestions ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  22. Megan @ TheSkinny-Life on February 2, 2014 at 7:58 pm

I love running in the rain! There’s something about the smell of the desert that I like. It can be annoying at first, but if it’s a consistent rain I don’t mind it at all! Rain is so uncommon here.

  23. PMK on February 2, 2014 at 8:51 pm

Wow, they got married so young!

  24. April on February 2, 2014 at 11:28 pm

Living in Portland, we often have no choice but to run in the rain. We don’t mind it too much except when it gets too cold. That’s not too much fun.

  25. Runner Girl Eats on February 3, 2014 at 6:40 am

I am not a fan of running in the rain but do enjoy a nice drizzle at the end of a hot, summer rain.

  26. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on February 3, 2014 at 7:46 am

It all depends on the temps for me! If it’s warm, I love a little rain… but if it’s chilly, no thank you! Good job getting it done ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Niki on February 3, 2014 at 7:51 am

I love running in the rain – although I live in Scotland so it’s a pretty regular occurrence. But I find that running in heavy rain makes me feel really hardcore even if I’m going slow!

The link for Week 2 workouts doesn’t seem to be up or working? Is there a different way to access the workouts posted?

    • Fitnessista on February 3, 2014 at 9:37 am

it’s up! it was on auto-post and didn’t post :/

  30. Jamie on February 3, 2014 at 11:05 am

I ran 8 miles on Saturday and it was pouring for half of the run…but it was so refreshing (I live right outside of Orlando)! I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face and felt so awesome both during and after the run. However if I’d heard any thunder the outcome would have been verrrrry different.

  31. Mollie on February 4, 2014 at 5:53 am

I live in Vancouver so have to run in the rain a lot. The secret? A baseball cap. Keeps the rain out of your face.

  32. Cassie Vaughn on February 4, 2014 at 1:47 pm

When it’s hot, I enjoy a drizzle when I run outside!

  33. Maria on February 4, 2014 at 10:14 pm

I’m all for a light, misty, slightly cool rain for those long runs. I completed my first 20 miler during marathon training in that kind of weather and it was my best run. Downpourโ€ฆwell that’s a different story.
