Weekend adventures + when to take it easy
Hi guys! How’s your weekend going so far? Ours has been a lot of fun. We hung out with my aunt, uncle and cousins who were in town,
(cousins playing in the waves!)
caught up with a friend and her hubby (thanks again for the Tiki Port date, Erica!)
and enjoyed an awesome Mexican dinner with Whitney, Wyn and her hubby at Cantina Mayahuel. Everything was SO fresh and delicious,
especially those ruby margaritas 😉
(The best part about this picture is the dads in the reflection making goofy faces to get the babies to smile.)
Dessert was at Mariposa, which has homemade ice cream and the flavors change frequently. Mexican chocolate:
I can’t even explain how glorious it was.
Breakfast cookie dough cereal made a comeback this weekend,
and also wanted to share this pic of gorgeous sunflowers. They have to be at least 7 feet tall! Amazing.
During today’s run, I wasn’t feeling fantastic. I tested out the Week 2 workout yesterday and also practiced a few BodyPump tracks using a pair of dumbbells. My legs were stiff, sore and heavy this morning; it took constant determination to keep running. So, I stopped and walked instead. The Pilot and I have worked out a great schedule for our training weekend runs, so we’ll take turns going out while the other parent stays home with Liv. (She’s fine walking with the jogging stroller but isn’t a fan when we run. I think it gives her flash backs of that one 5k and someone sprayed us with water.) I had an hour to do whatever, so I enjoyed my little walk/run for 4ish miles and headed home. It felt great, I still got in a workout + some Zen time, and I did what my legs were telling me they wanted.
Just a friendly reminder that if you’re wicked sore after the Week 1 workouts, it’s ok (and encouraged!) to take it down a notch and modify if you need to. Anything that you do differently in your routine will initiate change, so there’s no reason to go balls to the wall or (way worse) fail to give yourself adequate rest. When your muscles are extremely sore, that’s an indication that the fibers haven’t had a chance to fully recover and repair. I can usually tell when a little movement would actually make me feel better, or when I need an extra off day. Keep in mind that when you’re extremely sore, chances are that you won’t be able to get in a killer workout from lack of energy, or could end of compensating to make the exercises feel better. Listen to your body, k?
Along with that, some words from the wisdom wall:
How are you feeling workout-wise from last week? CRUSHED IT? Stoked for tomorrow’s off day? Don’t forget to comment here with today’s workout; last chance to enter the Skyscapes giveaway one last time before the winners are announced tomorrow!
xoxo

Woohoo for breakfast cookie dough cereal! I make it all the time thanks to you. 🙂
Love the cutie pic of you and Livi doing down dog!
My workout today was the week 2 #summershapeup routine and it was sweat-tastic! Timely post as I had planned to do 25 minutes of piyo as well but logged lots of miles this week ad decided to save it for another day. I think my body will thank me! So happy tomorrow is a day off 🙂
Hi Gina! I love so many of the workouts you have created. I used to take Body pump and think it is an amazing workout but for whatever reason les miles programs are really hard to come by in NYC. Maybe in the future you could come up with a body pump type workout that can be done using just dumbbells?! Or any high rep, low weight dumbbell workout would be awesome!
i definitely will! just need to find music that youtube won’t block :/ also will post my certification video too! xoxo
I would LOVE this too! I did Body Pump religiously twice a week up until I gave birth to baby #4. I ended up dropping my gym membership because we moved 30 min away, and now I do all my strength training on my own. I miss Body Pump, and would love a similar work out I can do at home.
Hey Gina!
I’m not sure if you will see this, but if not, maybe someone else on here can help me. I’m in the market to buy either a heart rate watch, or a tracker like a Fitbit. However, I want my calories that I burn during weight lifting to be calculated as well, and I’m not sure if the Fitbit does that? Just wanted your recommendation for something that will track my calories even during weight sessions, not just steps/cardio. Thank you so much and I hope you had a wonderful weekend!!

I was just thinking about breakfast cookie dough cereal this morning. Like I woke up and before I got out of bed I knew that’s what I wanted to make. I love it during the summer!
Mom & daughter yoga looks like a ton of fun!
What a great photo of you and Liv!! Such a healthy example 🙂 Just commented on the SSU page that I had to rest again today, last workout was Friday. Reading this post was awesome and just the encouragement needed 🙂 Thank you. Hope you have a great evening.
My workout was a 3 mile run on a scenic trail!
My workouts have been rough. My calves feel so heavy. I’m not sure if my body’s still recovering from my foot injury, if it’s the extreme heat or what. I’ve been getting deep tissue massage weekly, rotating ice/heat, drinking tons of water and nothing has been working. I’m beginning to think I may need several days off to let things settle down.
That downward dog picture is adorable!
This post really resonated with me! It’s so important sometimes just to slow down and listen to your body. That tank is so pretty by the way!! I also wanted to ask you–could you do a post about how you balanced your own workouts with your training for barre and Yoga?
I’m probably going to do a YTT coming this fall–but we’re required to take like 4-5 Yoga classes a week in addition to the training lecture hours. I’d like to still be able to get my own workouts in–besides yoga–so I’m just curious what you did.
Thanks!
PS: Great job with SSU 2014–you can see you put a lot of effort into it!! 🙂
i haven’t started yoga training yet – i think it starts end of july?- but i definitely will! for the most part, i just make sure i only do one thing a day. if i teach an active class, that’s my workout. with barre, you don’t do the workout with them you just coach for the most part
thank you! i’m so happy you guys are enjoying it 🙂
xoxo
Today’s workout was fairly low key. I went to a pure barre class that focuses just on teaching the moves/how to make the workout most effective. That and a 2 mile walk (to and from the studio).
The photo of you two doing yoga is super cute. LOVE.
I love fresh homemade ice cream!
ahhh it was so good!
That Mexican Dinner looks amazing!
And I love the pic of you and Liv doing Yoga.
Thanks for the reminder about resting! My sciatic nerve is acting up and I definitely need a break.
I definitely needed to read this. I’m so sore from working out and going hiking this weekend…I think tonight I’m just going to take an easy walk with the puppies and then spend some quality time with my foam roller.
Livi’s yoga pose is so cute!
Got in Workout 1 lakeside in New Hampshire on Saturday! Even got some friends to join in 🙂
Gina, I am so glad you encourage us to take it easy if we need to. I am not gonna lie, workout one last week totally kicked my butt – I literally could not walk down stairs normal for a good couple of days, I just felt SO SORE. I did start to feel bad when I saw others checking in, doing the next work out, but I literally knew I could not do another intense workout – I’d probably hurt a muscle. So I did take it slow, and eventually did some foam rolling which hurt like a mother but ended up helping my muscles recover. Going into week two, I am going to keep your advice close to my heart and listen to my body without feeling like I HAVE to do everything perfectly. Thanks!
Encouragement to listen to my body and rest is JUST what I needed to hear.
I dominated this past Winter Shape Up, and was ready to take on SSU the same. But I only managed to make it through 2 rounds of WO1 last week–I was SO SORE, the only thing I managed to do the rest of the week was a couple easy jogs through my neighborhood and part of the Hills workout on the treadmill.
I obviously didn’t do a good job maintaining everything I built from your WSU program, and I’m disappointed in myself for that. I am hoping to have a fresh start this week and get rid of my pessimistic attitude!
What a fun weekend! I love sunflowers. My friend carried them as her bouquet at her wedding and they were so beautiful!
ooh i want that ice cream. jk. also, omg, i forgot about breakfast cookie dough (if you can believe it). i need to go buy some bananas!
ohh snap, i think i was thinking about the breakfast cookie. i can make these with what i have in my pantry, hooray!
It was great seeing you!! Tiki Port was delicious and I totally see why you go there so often. I could probably eat there everyday. 🙂
I hope to see you when you make your way back to Tucson to visit.
Adorable photo of you and Liv btw!
so happy you felt awesome during your run! today’s workout i felt so strong it was a major confidence booster! it is so weird though… every time i workout at home (in saskatchewan) i feel stronger than any time i workout in ontario (where i lived for the past 4 years) so weird! i can always lift more at home!!!!!!?
that ice cream looks incredible!!
love seeing the little ones play together
xoxo
