Dough Issues

Heyyyyy 🙂 Happy Sunday! How’s your weekend been?

My Saturday was bueno. I enjoyed the training appointments and nutrition consultation, but it felt SO GOOD to come home to the casa.

Some Saturday eats:

These bad johnnies

tuna

The pilot enjoyed his along a sandwich, and I added my portion to a beast.

Check out how TALL it was!

beastly

Serious salad beastliness right there 😉

That massive volcano of goodness included romaine, bell pepper, grape tomatoes, roasted cauliflower and onion, tuna bites, red pepper flakes and Goddess dressing

beast

I met Jeni at the gym –and later, the pilot joined the gym party- and proceeded to finish 8.3 miles on the revolving apparatus of death (treadmill). 8.3!!!! By far, the longest I’ve ever been able to stay on that thing without dying of boredom. I’m an outside runner kinda girl.

I attribute the distance success to a baller playlist:

image

“I Run for Life” was the first song they played at my first 5k, when I was a junior in college. I knew it would get me going.. and Glee and Gaga always do the trick 🙂

Here’s how 8.3 miles on the treadmill feels:

xena (Source)

Like a warrior.

Here’s how 8.3 miles on the treadmill looks:

IMG00047-20100123-1912

Like a sweaty, skeptical mess.

I couldn’t wait to dig into the calzones the pilot and I were making for dinner.

The dough I made was a little sticky and hard to work with, though!

My calzone had zucchini, squash, sundried tomatoes, oregano, garlic and basil

calzone

The pilot had organic pepperoni and cheese

pilot

And mine –after performing a Heidi Montag-esque plastic surgery operation (by adding scraps of dough)- was less than attractive

zone

It tasted like foodgasms, despite the appearance, and the spelt dough (homemade, using this recipe, subbing gluten-free baking mix and spelt flour for the white and wheat, respectively) was glorious. We dipped our calzones into organic marinara sauce <3

Well I’m off with the girls for shopping and Bikram yoga in Jacksonville for the day. Here’s hoping I come back with lots of fun stuff 🙂

Enjoy your Sunday and I’ll see you tomorrow with week 2 of the Winter Shape Up.

Much love,

Gina

Yum the calzone looks great, I’m going to try and make it and see if it works if I just use organic spelt flour. Enjoy the shopping, hope you find some fun stuff and shoes for the big party to go with your fabulous dress.

Gina, I’m so excited about seeing week 2 of the Winter Shape Up! :o) I just posted on my blog that I was committing to the Shape Up, so I’m held accountable. Bring on the workouts! 😉

THANKS AGAIN for creating the program! Have fun shopping. 🙂

  3. Nicole @ Making Good Choices on January 24, 2010 at 8:41 am

You look like you put together a great playlist for the run, especially the last song. I love Hey Soul Sister! 🙂 The calzone looks so great (it’s what’s on the inside that counts right…?) I just bought spelt flour for the 1st time in my trip to whole foods where I thought I should buy the entire store…or at least half of it. Can’t wait to see new shape up!

  4. Susan on January 24, 2010 at 8:41 am

Forgot to say Gina, I’ve got a date later!! Soo nervous but kinda excited, I’ll report back tmrw, hope it goes well. Enjoy the shopping, you’re so lucky to have such great stores in the States. Have fun. I’ll be looking forward to starting week 2 of the shape up. Happy Sunday.

I’m trying to think the longest I’ve ever made it on a treadmill-not very long-extreme dislike! You go, you warrior! Ps love the heidi reference. I just feel bad for her and her plastic face.

  6. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on January 24, 2010 at 8:53 am

Ahhhh I LOVE calzones! Just made some a few weeks ago – so tasty!!

  7. Angela (Oh She Glows) on January 24, 2010 at 8:55 am

  8. Paige @ Running Around Normal on January 24, 2010 at 9:08 am

Love the post 8-mile shot. Your expression says it all! haha

    Those calzones sound delicioso!

  9. Ashley on January 24, 2010 at 9:12 am

The calzone sounds scrumptious! Good luck shopping and getting your yoga on! I’ve decided that i’m going to hit the gym even though I am still fighting this cold. Two days of no workout= unhappy Ash! Also, would you be interested in a Valentine’s Day blogger exchange?? I think a healthy version would be so much fun!

  10. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on January 24, 2010 at 9:13 am

Eh, who cares how it looks as long as it tastes good?!?

I get SO bored on the treadmill– awesome job knocking out over 8 miles!!

  11. Krista N. on January 24, 2010 at 9:21 am

Hi! Jacksonville is beautiful today 🙂 Also, if you are going to the Town Center we have a new place called Studio 9, they have lots of fun salads. Anyways……Enjoy your day!!!!

  12. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on January 24, 2010 at 9:37 am

Sounds like a fun day! And wow, kudos to you for staying on the treadmill for 8 miles! You are a stronger woman than me! I HATE the treadmill with a passion. But music really does help.

    Calzones are so good!

  13. Katie on January 24, 2010 at 10:04 am

WOW, great job on the ‘mill… very inspiring for me, since I’ve had a lot of trouble with my schedule and running outdoors while it’s still light out. I’m training for a half so I HAVE to log the miles… any tips other than the music? Although that’s a big one for me, too!

  14. K on January 24, 2010 at 10:05 am

Your calzones are drool worthy! I’m loving the looks of that! Haha – the post run pics are great, I’d be beat red and huffing in the corner if I were you 😉

  15. Brigid on January 24, 2010 at 10:06 am

Your calzone is right up my alley. I’ll have to add that to the dinner queue.

  16. Andrea @ Celery In The City on January 24, 2010 at 10:14 am

…that salad! DROOL WORTHY. it looks amazing.

  17. Jenny on January 24, 2010 at 10:53 am

Yay I love when you share your playlists! 🙂

And that dough–while it might have been sticky to work with–really looks delicious!

  18. Tyler Ramey on January 24, 2010 at 11:04 am

Love the GaGa-ness in that playlist. 😉

  19. **Lauren (Biochemista)** on January 24, 2010 at 11:07 am

    Hey gina 🙂

Congrats on the treadmill run! I can’t get myself to do more than 5-6 miles on it before getting bored. I did a 10-miler outside yesterday but I could never everrrr do that indoors. I have ‘mill ADD big time!!! 😉

Oh PS, I bought Goddess dressing for the first time and I’m completely obsessed!!!! 🙂 🙂

    Have a fab Bikram class!!!!!!

    xx

Nice treadmill run….I’m always covered in sweat after treadmill runs! Your dinner looks great…I’m sure the calzones were delicious despite the dough issues. Have fun with your friends at Bikram yoga…i’m jealous, I wish I was coming! haha Bikram is great!

I decided to come to your blog/life for workout inspiration. After a weekend of insanity, I need it. And what did I find? You bein’ bossy and running 8.3 miles!!! Just what I needed to see, so thank you!

Ugh, I also need 10 salad beasts for cleansing purposes! Have a faaab Sunday! xoxoxo

  22. Morgan @ Healthy Happy Place on January 24, 2010 at 11:22 am

you are a brave soul for running that far on a treadmill. I get SOO bored running that far unless I’m outside with constantly changing scenery.

  23. Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather on January 24, 2010 at 11:38 am

I don’t think I’ve been able to manage that long on a treadmill… I’m definitely an out door runner too!

  24. Nicci on January 24, 2010 at 11:50 am

Tuna Bites sound really good, I may need to look for these in the store. Sometimes the ugliest foods are still yummy.

  25. Gabriela on January 24, 2010 at 11:52 am

Way to go with the 8 miles! I’m the same way…I can only do long runs outside!

That calzone looks YUMMY, in spite of its deformities…sounds delicious, too! I love sundried tomato 🙂

    Can’t wait for week 2!

  26. homecookedem on January 24, 2010 at 11:52 am

  28. jean on January 24, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Love your workouts however I have done something to my lower back always had a few “cracks and creaks” but this was very painful. Do not have any idea what i did. decided to see a chiropractor. Don’t know how i feel about that. Just checking on your feelings. It is better after seeing him and he is someone i know so i can talk to him honestly. really want to get back to running and weights and yoga.Any thoughts? 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:33 pm

      hey jean,
so sorry to hear you hurt your back! it’s always important to honor your injuries while working out
from now on, i’d take it super easy or totally off from exercise if you’re in pain
if you’re back is still bothering you, see a doc asap

  29. Jenna on January 24, 2010 at 12:24 pm

Great job on the run! Living in MN, I have had to learn to love the treadmill, so I really don’t mind it. But I can see how living in the southern part of the country and being used to the warm weather, a treadmill isn’t usually necessary. It takes a lot of adjustment!

    Have fun today!

  30. caronae on January 24, 2010 at 12:54 pm

Wow! I don’t think I could do 8 miles on the treadmill. Just curious, was the weather bad outside or something? I almost always choose to run outside, but to each her own! 🙂

  31. Marissa on January 24, 2010 at 12:54 pm

    GO YOU!!!!

    Hey Gina 🙂

I have idea for a post for you. I recently took my Blackberry on a 10-mile run and took pics of the scenery, etc. that I saw. It was really fun and made the time go by fast!

We could start a forum where we all post this. I think it would be interesting as well as motivating for everyone! Let me know if you want to do this 🙂 🙂

I posted my run here: If you’re even in DC, pack your running shoes!

I took my camera with me on yesterday’s 10-mile run. Check out the pics 🙂

oh how i envy your 8 miles of anything… treadhell or otherwise!!

but i really dropped in to ask you a question… i made a breakfast sandwich this morning, and when i took the first bite i literally, outloud, said, “oh my gosh YUMMM”…

    so my question…

does that count as a FOOD GASM!?!???!!?

    hahahahahaha

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:31 pm

      hahahah YES!
congratulations on your first foodgasm 🙂

  39. Nicole on January 24, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Haha.. that picture of you is so great! AND the calzone looks good. I’d love to use spelt flour, but it seems to give me a similar reaction to wheat. It’s too bad = (

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:30 pm

and by great, you mean horrifying, right?? hahaha
try brown rice flour! it’s works beautifully for pizza and calzone dough

  40. Tiffany on January 24, 2010 at 6:56 pm

Hi! First time commenter! Your calzones look sooo good! I also love that you eat your salads in serving bowls too. That’s the only way I can get mine to fit in a bowl hehe. And congrats on making it through 8.3 miles on a treadmill! I can’t go any farther than 4 miles on it, I’m totally an outdoor running kinda gal too 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 24, 2010 at 8:30 pm

whoo hoo! first time commenter! hi 🙂
and yes, a big serving bowl is the only way to get a salad beast to fit 🙂

Yummy!!! I make wraps and dough out of oat flour, which is very tasty!

    I can’t wait to try these 🙂

    XXOO

  42. Gracie @ Girl Meets Health on January 24, 2010 at 8:13 pm

Love the idea of making homemade calzone! I actually just made a homemade pizza for the first time, and I can’t wait to experiment more with the whole wheat dough. A calzone sounds like the perfect idea 🙂

Major props for the long treadmill run. I’m currently in the process of *trying* to become a runner, and I can barely do a half mile on the treadmill without wanting to die :/ But you’re right – a great playlist definitely makes all the difference!

  43. Jessica (Fit and Clean) on January 24, 2010 at 9:40 pm

I loved everything about this post. Unfortunately, I look like the first picture of how a treadmill feels after 2 miles. You did good! And that salad and calzones, I am drooling! I read that my carb intake is supposed to be 65% of my total calories. Do you increase your carbs because of your running? On cross training days I do weights and aerobics classes. Wondering what your take is on that? Thanks 🙂

  44. Emily J on January 24, 2010 at 9:52 pm

I know just what you mean about “I Run for Life”. My exercise song is “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts- it got me through every mile run in high school. 🙂
Though I had tried it last year and not been successful, I’ve decided to give South Beach another go. My mom did it and went down two sizes (and she wasn’t all that big to begin with), and seeing how much success you’ve had with it, I thought I owed it to myself to try again. Plus I’m graduating this year and want to be bikini-ready for all the parties! 😀
Please don’t stop blogging- you’re such an inspiration!

Gina, thanks so much for sharing your playlist! I am always on the lookout for great running music. My current favorite is also on your list – Empire State of Mind – it keeps my legs moving fast. But I could never run that far on a treadmill. Ever. Nice work.

Haha is the word foodgasm a Fitnessista trademark? I think it may become a staple in my vocab. In fact, I said “shoegasm” the other day because of you. And the calzone wasn’t ugly…it was special. 🙂 Dough shaping is always a little dramatic for me!

    • Fitnessista on January 25, 2010 at 7:36 am
