Hawt Potato

Hi friends <3 How’s your day going?? Hope you’ve had a fabulous afternoon.

I’m back to fitness teaching and it feels SOOOOOO good 🙂 It’s been a while but it’s so nice to get back in the swing of things. Arizona is definitely starting to feel like home again

sabino (2)

and I really like that 🙂

After today’s class, I munched a delicious amazeball:

ball

and a pack of seaweed snacks from Trader Joe’s.

seaweed

The day was filled with errands, a walk with Bella (she has been a feisty little thing today!) listening to Daily Boost and How Stuff Works (two awesome podcasts), and then I made a lunch featuring something I haven’t enjoyed in far too long.

potato

Potatoes!

As you guys already know, while I didn’t have an official eating disorder, I definitely participated in disordered eating back in the day, like many women do [I’ll do a post on my eating history in the near future] With all of the nutrition/diet/fitness books I read, eventually white potatoes began to scare the bejeezus out of me, so I stopped eating them. For a few years. I still prefer sweet potatoes (for taste and nutrition) but am really glad that I brought them back into my life.

A meal the Pilot would enjoy, too 🙂

Alexia red potatoes with portobello mushrooms, green beans, fresh rosemary, a pop egg (aka over easy) with 2 egg whites, salad on the side:

You’re delicious, Mr. Potato Head 😉

Quite a few diet and nutrition books have a knack for making readers fear perfectly healthy, whole foods, and encouraging chemical-laden low-cal crapola.

Amongst the garbage you can find in the nutrition/lifestyle section of the bookstore, there are also hidden gems.

Some of my favorites:

– The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno

– The Raw Food Detox Diet and Detox for Women, both by Natalia Rose

– The Kind Diet, by Alicia Silverstone

– Abs Diet for Women (I agree with most of the stuff in this one)

-South Beach (I agree with most of the stuff in this one)

I’m also really excited to read this, which automatically appeared in the Kindle yesterday (I pre-ordered):

Crazy, Sexy Diet by Kris Carr

If you’re not familiar with Kris’ website, it’s an awesome resource for healthy, vivacious, eco-friendly living. I’ve skimmed through the pages, but already know it’s going to be amazing. Two of my good friends (Gena and Kristen) have recipes featured in the book, too 🙂

Well I’m off to read and chillax <3

Have a lovely night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

Gina

Cool, I’m making potatoes in the oven right now. (Couple of big potatoes diced up, and drizzled with a sauce I made out of a bit of melted butter, honey, salt, and cayenne pepper–my boyfriend loves them). And I’m also making green beans (my absolute FAVORITE vegetable) with a little bit of cheese on top of them. And some chicken.

I’m hoping to get a copy of Crazy Sexy Diet when Kris Carr is in VA on her book tour, which might be this week! I love her site, her movie and everything she stands for. Tell us what you think of the book when you’re done! 😀

Yay for ‘taters!!! I honestly think I was in the best shape of my life when I was having plain old eggs and breakfast potatoes nearly every Saturday and Sunday morning. They’re quite nutritious if you include the skin, and are super affordable. Love!

Glad to hear you feel at home again! Enjoy your time chillaxin!

  4. Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) on January 18, 2011 at 8:23 pm

For a long time I, too, was brainwashed into thinking white potatoes were bad. No more. They are from the earth. I prefer sweet potatoes in general based on taste but made a delicious batch of rosemary roasted potatoes this week and enjoyed every bite.

Thanks for the book recommendations! I do have to say I enjoy “Skinny Bitch” just because there is information I never knew… there’s some good facts if you can weed out the vulgar language!

I am so proud of Kristen and Gena and Ive been reading Kris’ site and all her emails for awhile now. THat’s so cool it just showed up on your kindle!

Thanks for your list of “diet” books that you like. I have the first two. Have wanted to pick up Kind/Alicia, too.

I am a fan of doing whatever dietary path works for that person. We are all so different. Can’t wait to read you upcoming post!

    🙂

OH potatoes… I freaking love them! I’m eating some garlicky boiled spuds right now 🙂

  10. Dynamics on January 18, 2011 at 8:29 pm

I love red potatoes. Cut in quarters, drizzle/mix with Olive oil, sprinkle with REAL minced garlic and fresh basil. (Thyme or rosemary works great also.) Bake until you smell them, Yummy. You can even make these on the BBQ. I have three of the five books you listed. Although I have not read them cover to cover, I do agree with you. Some good info and some great recipes.

  11. Ashley on January 18, 2011 at 8:32 pm

I love potatoes, and your right, diets have taught me to fear potatoes. I now love sweet potatoes and tend to choose them over regular potatoes, but I’ll eat them occasionally. Thanks for the book suggestions, I’m always looking for something good to read!

  12. holly n on January 18, 2011 at 8:41 pm

I am glad you clarified that being afraid of potatoes is not the same thing as an eating disorder. Disordered eating is definitely a sad reality of our culture, but an eating disorder is a biological illness. It is essentially a brain disorder and not caused by the media or a diet or feeling fat (I was actually 10 pounds UNDERweight when my ED started). Of course, disordered eating can trigger an eating disorder, so I am glad to read you are in a healthy place now.

Sorry to go off on this. I just think it is important to spread awareness.

    Thanks 🙂

  13. CathyK on January 18, 2011 at 8:47 pm

i think arizona could very quickly feel like a home to me…although i’m a proud canadian, i do LOVE the states, and really need to visit arizona!!
thanks for the book suggestions – isn’t it cool when you have a personal connection to books! (friends, recipes…) So glad you’re in a happy place, back to teaching! 🙂

  14. ashley@quasichick on January 18, 2011 at 8:48 pm

Thanks for all of the book suggestions! I made some roasted potatoes and broccoli with slivered purple onions for dinner the other night! Yummy 🙂 I like to eat potatoes with other veggies

  15. Christin@purplebirdblog on January 18, 2011 at 8:48 pm

  16. Melissa @ Running with Needles on January 18, 2011 at 8:48 pm

I love white potatoes and don’t think I could ever give them up! I do love sweet potatoes as well, but white will always be my favorite. It must be the Irish girl in me ; )

That’s so great that you got to teach again! I always experience withdrawal-like symptoms even if I don’t teach a class for like 2 weeks, so this must feel amazing for you! I am also a huge fan of Tosca Reno’s Eat Clean Diet and meeting her last summer was definitely one of the highlights of my year!
I hope you have a great night Gina, and happy reading!

  19. Sana on January 18, 2011 at 8:59 pm

Not everyone has to have an eating disorder to have disordered thoughts! Thanks for sharing your 🙂

  20. Ryan on January 18, 2011 at 9:03 pm

I bought this book on Amazon in December (not sure why it was released on there prior to the release date on her website) but it is amazing!!! You will love it for sure!

  21. Aylin @ GlowKitchen on January 18, 2011 at 9:06 pm

There is nothing intuitively wrong with white potato. It’s a vegetable after all–I figure the only reason I wouldn’t eat it is because someone convinced me otherwise. It may not be the healthiest of veggies of the gamut, but it’s better than, say, fake, vegan faux-cheeses/meats. But I also have a soft spot for hash browns…

  22. Kristina @ Life as Kristina on January 18, 2011 at 9:06 pm

I had the same potato complex-and now I throw them in randomly for fun…and do I see butter lettuce? Love it!!! Have a great night!!!

  23. Kim on January 18, 2011 at 9:11 pm

How far you’ve come since you were loathing (let’s be honest here – lol) Valdizzy. Now you’re all happy in Arizona! And everything is falling into place!

    Awesome possum!

loathing definitely occurred. for 4 years. haha

I love the Kind Diet. The recipes in there are so simple, and delicious.

  27. Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn on January 18, 2011 at 9:22 pm

I read that book in two days FLAT. Kris is a firecracker, I love her and everyone must purchase that book!!

Slash I prefer sweet potatoes also, but it’s awful how bad a wrap good foods get…especially bananas! Everything in moderation:)

  28. Kara on January 18, 2011 at 9:24 pm

Roasted potatoes are the best! I actually don’t really like potatoes, but what you made looks good!

Confession: I really, really enjoy white pasta. No matter how many things I read tell me to eat whole wheat, I will probably always prefer white pasta.

Sometimes, you just have to eat what you want, not what the diet gods deem is healthy 🙂

  29. Ali on January 18, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I love potatoes!! They are one of my all time fav food, especially twice baked 🙂 ps I want a Kindle really bad!

  30. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on January 18, 2011 at 9:28 pm

I’m glad you mentioned the Abs Diet for Women- I like it too!! I think it’s got a lot of fad-ish stuff in it, but at the basis it encourages women to eat clean, whole foods in adequate amounts, which is always good!

I haven’t had a white potato in AGES. No idea why though. I do prefer sweet, but maybe I need to give regular a try again!

  31. Alicia@ eco friendly homemaking on January 18, 2011 at 9:36 pm

This dish looks so good! I like potatoes but don’t eat them very often but after looking at these pictures I am ready to go cook some right now.Really like your blog!

i have been wanting some potatoes lately! i do avoid eating them, its not a regular item on the grocery list, but i am not afraid to eat them. so thats a good thing!

I really don’t read books like that, but i guess i dont’ have extra time to read other books besides the ones i’m already reading for school! haha but at least i’m taking nutrition so i’m learning some of that stuff. I wouldn’t mind reading a couple of the ones that you enjoyed

  36. Jenna @ Eating Green, Staying Lean on January 18, 2011 at 10:05 pm

    1. Those potatoes look awesome, I <3 them with runny eggs.

    2. Do you love your Kindle? I think I want one, but I'm a little apprehensive…does it hurt your eyes?

    3. Arizona is SO PRETTY. My dad moved out there for the winter and sends me some beautiful pictures!

How is it reading on a screen? I really think its cool and easy, but love the feel of a book in my hands!

    xxoo

i thought i wouldn’t like it, but prefer my kindle now! it’s so much easier to read and way less bulky. the only thing i wouldn’t like via kindle would be magazines and cookbooks

  42. kt on January 18, 2011 at 10:45 pm

I love “How Stuff Works”! I think someone already mentioned this, but “This American Life” is really good too. Quirky and fascinating.

Good luck with getting back into the swing of teaching!

  43. Amy on January 18, 2011 at 10:50 pm

I definitely think that a lot of your readers would take away so much if you went into your history with disordered eating habits — mainly because so many of us are either currently or have suffered in the same way. Showing that it doesn’t need to be like that would be encouraging to say the least!

    • Carla on January 19, 2011 at 8:33 pm

Actually I disagree. So many people claim to be ‘disordered eaters’ when honestly I think our whole society has an unhealthy mindset towards food. Then people begin to think disordered eating and eating disorders are synonymous, when the reality is they are VERY different. It irks me when people who maybe have bad body image or try to diet a lot claim to have an ED.

      • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 11:46 pm

that’s why i was sure to clarify that what i experienced was different. eating disorders and disordered eating are two totally different things

  44. Namaste Gurl on January 18, 2011 at 10:59 pm

White potatoes are loaded with potassium, magnesium, phosphorous, fiber and many other essential key nutrients. While I prefer sweet potatoes, there’s nothing wrong with a white potato every so often. It’s the processed junk people roast, fry and fill them with that makes than non- whole and unprocessed. Muy bueno point, Gina!

  45. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table on January 19, 2011 at 12:34 am

i love that you are posting podcasts – i’m always looking for new ones! and the books are awesome, too. i just got a kindle and my “to-read” collection is ever-growing.

  46. Ari @ The Diva Dish on January 19, 2011 at 1:39 am

Potatoes used to scare me too! especially because everyone was cutting out foods that were “white,” since they were bad for you…I am happy to admit i no longer am afraid! (Although I agree sweet potatoes are still my fav!)

  47. Gill (snaxandthecity) on January 19, 2011 at 2:57 am

thanks for the book tips – i’ve read some of those but will need to try the rest, especially coming from an ED background myself. i really agree with you re: the food fear thing, it’s crazy but i haven’t eaten a real potato in around 8 years! i eat sweet ones though 🙂

  48. Jena on January 19, 2011 at 6:19 am

I am in love with Tosco Reno, she is very inspiring. I have the Eat Clean Diet Recharged, The Eat Clean Diet Cookbook, and her new one, Best Body Now (in retrospect, this is more geared for older women, though it does have a section for women in their 20s).
Focussing on clean wholsome foods works for me. No restrictions, just focussing on getting everything that’s good for me.

PS I made sweet potato hash browns the other night with coconut butter, sea salt and garlic powder. YUM.

  49. CaSaundra on January 19, 2011 at 7:09 am

    I am a huge potato fan–I love em twice-baked, plain, homefries–any form really 🙂

  50. Sabine @ thefruitpursuit on January 19, 2011 at 7:29 am

I read about the CSD at Gena’s site, seems like a terrific read! The Kind Diet is on my wishlist :).

I like tosca’s recipes, but I also read her book and it’s a bit too ‘engineered’ for me, like at the proportions and ratios and bah. not my style. plus she eats like 10 eggwhites for breakfast? not cool…
