New Ballz and Snack Links

Itโ€™s about time I expanded my amazeball horizons.

ingredients

Iโ€™ve been brainstorming snack ideas that I can have in the fridge, grab and eat, and couldnโ€™t believe how long it had been since I had an amazeball. Theyโ€™re a great dose of healthy fat and protein- 2 usually does the trick for me. Instead of making the usual chocolate chip ballz, I played with a couple of flavor combinations:

Blueberry-lemon and Cocoa-berry

ballz4

For the blueberry-lemon,

ballz3

hereโ€™s what I did:

-Started with the original amazeballz recipe, skipping the chocolate chips and subbing oats for the coconut (Iโ€™m out of coconut and oats work just as well)

-Added 2 T dried blueberries

-Zest and juice of 1/2 lemon

-a little more maple syrup for texture

For the cocoa-berry,

ballz2

-I started with the original amazeballz recipe, again using oats

and chocolate almond butter in lieu of regular

choc ab

(tastes like frosting)

-Added 2 T dried mixed berries

-1 t cocoa powder

-a little more oats, since the chocolate almond butter had a different texture

Both flavors were prettyโ€ฆ amazeballz ๐Ÿ™‚

Making them in the Vita-mix probably wasnโ€™t the best idea:

vitamix

but my mini food processor was scarified for cookie butter and I canโ€™t seem to remember to order a new one until I need it. Life happens like that sometimes.

The good news is that I had a sleeping kitchen sidekick to hang out with while I scraped every last bit out of the Vita-mix ๐Ÿ˜‰

ballz

So tell me, friends: what are you favorite snacks that you can prep in advance, or make quickly?

Here are some of mine:

-Chopped veggies with homemade hummus or ranch dressing

snack plate

-trail mix -I love TJโ€™s, but itโ€™s also easy to make your own and pre-portion out into little baggies

trail mix

(or straight outta the bag, while driving)

-protein bars

Debโ€™s protein muffin

-Banana and almond butter, rolled up in a tortilla

Egg puff

It will be fun to get ideas from each other- feel free to link away! (Sometimes when comments include links or are from new commenters, I have to manually approve them, so no worries if it doesnโ€™t show up right away)

Hope you have a great day <3

xoxo

Homemade granola is definitely my favorite grab-a-handfull-ten-times-a-day snack! ๐Ÿ™‚

These sound awesome Gina! I know what you mean about things getting stuck in the blender – I hate having to waste any of the goodness so now I know better and just pull out the food processor! Some of my fave snacks are:
Pumpkin Pie Spiced Popcorn Mix (even though I know it’s not really seasonal any more!) http://eat-spin-run-repeat.com/recipes-2/?recipe_id=6006508
Sesame Orange Crusted Tofu (one of my most recent crazes! Takes a little bit of prep but I like to make a big batch and it lasts all week long) http://eat-spin-run-repeat.com/recipes-2/?recipe_id=6016351

I’m all about the one handed snack eating these days. I’ve been eating a lot of trail mix (almonds, dried cranberries, chocolate chips), celery dipped in pb, carrots and pitas and hummus, soup in a mug, and any fruit that’s not too drippy. I don’t even know how many crumbs I’ve dropped on my baby’s head while he hangs out in the sling and I’m eating!

  5. Julia on February 21, 2012 at 11:35 am

    Yummy!
    Can’t wait to try it!

I’m so excited about these new flavor combinations – I’m planning a week-long trip in March and was literally just thinking about what snacks to make for the trip right before your post popped up in my Google Reader! And I just ordered Sun Warrior from your Open Sky store for the first time, so I can’t wait to try it out! My favorite easy snacks are hard-boiled eggs, apple or banana with nut butter, veggies with hummus, Greek yogurt with various toppings like dried fruit/ nuts/ honey/ oats, medjool dates, and I recently tried out these delicious seed and raisin balls by Gena, which are similar in concept to your Amazeballz (they taste like PB&J!):

Hi Gina, great new recipe. Can I ask what is the status with your book? I believe you were waiting to publish the macaroon recipe in a book (unless I am mistaken). Anyways, I’d be really excited to buy it! Take care.

I have to get a book deal first ๐Ÿ˜‰ definitely sonething I want to pursue again when livi is a little older

  9. AmyW on February 21, 2012 at 11:42 am

I have been making your amazeballz with dark chocolate almond butter forever! It’s AWESOME and definitely helps when I get a sweet craving!

  10. Rachel on February 21, 2012 at 11:43 am

Wow–I’m going to have to try those!

As someone who is not a huge fan of nuts or nut butters, I often struggle to come up with healthy snacks. Fresh fruit is a staple, as well as small bowls of low-sugar cereal. Yogurt is another favorite, but I try not to buy the individual cups–so much wasteful packaging! So that eliminates the convenience factor. I can’t wait to read other people’s comments, and get some more snack ideas!

I love the sound of those lemon blueberry balls. Such a great flavor combination!

One of my favorite snacks is bbq baked chickpeas: http://www.picklesnhoney.com/2012/01/10/baked-bbq-chickpeas/

    They’re so addictive!

  14. Katie on February 21, 2012 at 11:51 am

  16. LisaG on February 21, 2012 at 11:58 am

I’m more of a salty snacker person. I go for lime flavored popcorn, pickles, olives, cheese.

  17. Ashley on February 21, 2012 at 12:07 pm

I’ve been trying to find that Choc Almond Butter everywhere up north – no luck!! I might have to suck it up and order a pack online haha.

These recipes sound deeelicious, I’m going to try one out soon!

that almond butter is dangerous… ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Shelly on February 21, 2012 at 12:08 pm

I like popcorn, overnight oats, chia pudding, ricotta with cocoa powder and honey, and fruit salad (basically mixed up chopped fruit).

  20. Jessica on February 21, 2012 at 12:08 pm

Mine aren’t snacks, but today I am making massaged kale salad, Daily Garnish’s Vegan Black Bean Burgers (best homemade veggie burger EVER), and Mama Pea’s Tofu Nuggets. Yummy quick lunches!
I just used the last of my oats, I wish I had some so I could make some of these Amazeballs, they.look.awesome.

Love the new recipes! Sounds so good. I love hummus and veggies for a quick snack, trail mix, or a banana with nut butter warmed up! Mmmm!

  27. Colleen on February 21, 2012 at 12:37 pm

I make your amazeballz with PB, chocolate protein powder, half oats and half coconut and they taste like the No-Bake cookies my mom used to make. Also, try rolling them in EXTRA fine ground coffee or a couple packs of starbuck Via. A little messy, but SO WORTH IT!!!!

  28. Chelsa on February 21, 2012 at 12:39 pm

    Thanks for the balls recipes!

one quick and easy snack that I always have on hand is seasoned chic peas. I just mix canned chic peas with cayenne pepper, sea salt, apple cider vinegar and a little garlic. It’s healthy, high protein and doesn’t involve chopping veggies. Another thing I do is always have turkey deli meat on hand. I just take a romaine lettuce leaf and fill it with turkey and dijon mustard. It’s so easy when I don’t feel like cooking or chopping.

  29. Tori @ Get a Word in Veg Wise on February 21, 2012 at 12:48 pm

    Recent snack faves include:
    -frozen grapes
-skim ricotta with almond extract, a little stevia, and sliced almonds or berries
-1 can zevia root beer with about 3/4 vanilla almond milk…I know it’s weird, but it tastes like a root beer float
-air popped popcorn with cayenne pepper or parm cheese
-banana “ice cream” using a frozen banana and almond milk in the blender
-about a half a cup of leftover brown rice with chopped apples, cinnamon, and whatever nuts I have laying around
-egg whites omelets with veggies, especially spinach
    -smoothies – all kinds!

(obviously I love snacks haha) ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. Ali on February 21, 2012 at 12:49 pm

Hey Lady! I have really missed your recipe posts! Those amazeballz to look amazing! Yum! I think dried cherries and chilli would be amazing added to the chocolate ones! Or toasted almond pieces and sea salt. <3

  31. Destini on February 21, 2012 at 12:52 pm

I know you use your dehydrator a lot. But I will make banana chips, kiwi chips or whatever fruit. I also love kale(I know you do too) and love this cheezy kale recipe.

  33. Sarah on February 21, 2012 at 12:56 pm

I love all of these recipes! I have a question on your Moby wrap– that gorgeous photo above does not show any neck support–do you find yourself holding her little head so it doesn’t fall backward?

    • Fitnessista on February 21, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Yes, I’ll be holding her head or I’ll pull one of the fabric pieces slightly over her head for extra support. Even though it’s supposed to be hands free, I still hold her booty and head

  34. Bliss on February 21, 2012 at 1:18 pm

I really like instant oatmeal for a snack at the office. Other options include bananas, Protein Berry Cake from Peas and Thank You, and homemade granola bars. I usually make homemade granola bars for new moms, figuring they get lots of meals but may need an easy snack/breakfast. Thanks for the new recipes!

  35. Emily on February 21, 2012 at 1:20 pm

They sound so good! I usually try not to snack, but if I *need* something sweet then I do something like mix fine shredded coconut with a little bit of raspberry preserves and a drip or two of almond essence. I just mix it all up and eat off the spoon. It’s like a healthy bakewell tart ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. Hillary on February 21, 2012 at 1:38 pm

I love fresh fruits and veggies (especially portable ones like bananas), but in a pinch, I’ll grab a Clif Z bar. The Honey Graham are my favorite!

my go-to snack is always crackers. sometimes it’s not the best option but a few always do the trick to tide me over.

i LOVE amazeballs and haven’t made them in a while. thanks for the reminder. it’s on my to-do list today.

that pic of you cooking while wearing livi is precious. man i miss the baby wearing days!

  39. Leslie Wingate on February 21, 2012 at 2:09 pm

  40. melissa on February 21, 2012 at 2:11 pm

apples are always my go to snack then, probably celery (on its own or with peanut butter)
I’ve been eating frozen blueberries lately… but this only works if you are at home and not going anywhere. Unless you don’t mind the purple lips and teeth look…

I absolutely love your amazeballs! They’re my favorite go-to snack. I’ve also been playing around with balls/bars and have created one that’s pretty good. Little on the dry side so I’m still experimenting. http://whitlikesfit.com/2012/02/21/vanilla-coconut-protein-squares/. And I also love hard boiled eggs with hummus.
