Working out at home

Hiiii ๐Ÿ™‚ How’s your day going?

We got to see the Wildcats KILL IT last night.

Us at game

(Wearing my glasses since I got eyelash extensions! Fashion post coming with all the deets)

My favorite part of the games -ok, besides the dunks and watching my favorite band member shake it– is the crowd. The McKale crowd is out of control- we spend most of the game jumping around and screaming. Usually, I don’t have a voice the next day ๐Ÿ˜‰ For our tickets, we switched our seats around a little this year, and last night we sat next to two really awesome guys. They were cracking jokes with us, and we shared our kettle corn with them. Nothing like new basketball friendship, haha. We also sat a few rows behind two guys dressed as bananas, who had the sweetest dance moves. I could see how wearing a banana suit would make you want to dance a certain way, and it was legendary.

Catsgame

Today’s my day off from the gym, so I took Bell for a little walk this morning while Liv was sleeping and the Pilot was getting ready for work. While I already miss my normal teaching schedule -teaching Soli Beat the other night was soso fun- it has been a nice break to work out on my own terms.

Walk w bell

I was overtraining with my teaching schedule and racing schedule (which was foiled. MRI is this week, finally) and my body is exhaling a sigh of relief. I applied to get on the sub list for a couple of gyms until the new year, when I’ll have my own Zumba classes, but for now, I’m just doing my thing.

Lately, I’ve been getting in some great garage workouts:

Home gym 1 of 1

A little tour of  home gym:

physioball, two dumbbells (12 lbs. each; I’d like to get a set of 7s and 15s), a 35 lb kettlebell (for combos and swings), Goldie (my spin bike), and the pull-up bar.

Pullup bar 1 of 1 2

I’ve been doing mostly bodyweight exercises, in addition to spinning and strength. While I have all the tools I need, motivation is the trickiest part. It’s tougher to work out at home, especially when I look around and see other things that need to be done (aka womp womp chores), but when I make it happen, I can get in a great workout. I’m also thankful that I have some CrossFit cards and yoga passes left, too.

Where do you usually work out? At the gym, home, outdoors, with a friend? Any piece of workout equipment you’d love to have?? I’d go crazy for a water rower.

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day!

xoxo

Gina

Can’t wait to hear about your eyelash extensions! Details!!

  2. Mahealani @ Spending Time With Salad on November 19, 2013 at 6:16 pm

I positioned my elliptical in front of our projector so I can watch Netflix while working out. It’s hideous and huge, but having it in my living room means that it literally CANNOT be ignored! I’m really interested in getting a dip bar as I need some more arm work. I don’t have any experience with one though.

  3. Megan (The Lyons' Share) on November 19, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Most of my workouts are running outside (with a little bit of stretching + ab work afterwards at home), but otherwise I head to the yoga studio or the gym, or do bodyweight workouts at home. I would LOVE to have a piece of cardio equipment at home … I’ll run outside no matter what the weather, but on my no-running days it would be great to get in a bit of cardio at home without heading to the gym!

  4. jodie on November 19, 2013 at 6:32 pm

I workout at the gym but I also work out at home. I prefer to work out at home

  5. Brittany on November 19, 2013 at 6:35 pm

I workout at the gym and home with the occasional run outside. I would love to have a treadmill in my house as well as a whole zumba class at my disposal! But that last one is a little far fetched!

    • Brittany on November 19, 2013 at 6:42 pm

however, now Soli Beat makes that last one possible!!!!!!! and I get to take Zumba from my favorite Zumba teacher (you!) from my living room!

  6. Colleen on November 19, 2013 at 6:39 pm

I”m really lucky to have a DANCE STUDIO in my basement! I used to teach and compete in swing dancing, so I had giant mirrors and cushiony wood floors installed. I have an elliptical, some dial-a-weight dumbells, and stretchy strength bands. I have a TV hooked into a laptop, so I can do dvds or youtube workouts really easily. My little 18 month-old boy likes to do Soli Beat with me, it is supercute! I find it easier to work out at home than at the gym, because I can do it anytime, wearing whatever I want, and I don’t have to pack up all the toddler stuff.

  7. Michelle @ A Healthy Mrs on November 19, 2013 at 6:43 pm

I’m about 50/50 with home workouts vs gym workouts. At home, I love to use the Nike Training Club app — the workouts are great & require minimal equipment, so it’s perfect for home gyms!

  8. Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine on November 19, 2013 at 6:53 pm

I always do my workouts at home! I have a barbell, plates, a double rack of dumbbells, pull up bar, Pilates ball, yoga mat, kettlebell, bands, pretty much everything you need. Except I would love to get a bosu ball!

  9. Heather @fitncookies on November 19, 2013 at 7:08 pm

After moving out of my parent’s house and into my new house, I have been struggling with the workouts. I have dumbbells, kettlebells, and plenty of workouts, but sometimes I still don’t feel like I’m getting the best workout in. The gym is too expensive for me right now, though I’d kill to go! I would say I could really use an elliptical or treadmill right now ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Sara @ LovingOnTheRun on November 19, 2013 at 7:16 pm

I have a treadmill with a TV in front. It seems to help and I love sometimes when I don’t feel like going to the gym in the really cold winter months.

  11. Abi@AbsofSteel on November 19, 2013 at 7:36 pm

I workout half at the gym and half at home. I couldn’t do without my dumbells and my pull-up bar, but i especially love my pullup bar!

  12. Kimberly on November 19, 2013 at 7:41 pm

I joined a gym since it was too hard to get motivated to workout at home and run outside. I’ll do an occasional yoga video at home, but other than that I try to make it to the gym for my workouts 3 or 4 times a week. Lately to take things to the next level I’ve been running with friends and meeting with a personal trainer.

  13. Teresa @ www.fitinwoodbine.com on November 19, 2013 at 7:47 pm

I do both. I have a small gym in my basement, but I also have a gym membership. I mainly go to the gym just for the spin classes twice a week. I have been considering giving up my gym membership since I see some many getting great workouts at home!!

  14. Cori on November 19, 2013 at 7:52 pm

This isn’t a plug or anything, but I found a site nearly a year ago called Studio Sweat (it’s a studio in California that does spinning and other training stuff) and they post their videos online. It’s only $20 a month ish. I am in the best shape I’ve ever been and it’s awesome when you have a spin bike. You should take a look.

  15. Meagan on November 19, 2013 at 8:01 pm

I would work out in my apartment, but I am so self-conscious about jumping around on the floor. There’s a person who lives below me ๐Ÿ™ Now if I was on the bottom floor, that would be different.

  16. Catherine on November 19, 2013 at 8:07 pm

I used to strictly workout at the gym. But, last year I moved into a new house with a huge basement that is perfect for working out. So, I cancelled my gym membership and do home workouts now. Sooooo much more convenient!! I keep adding pieces of equipment and right now I have my eyes on a Bosu ball. One of these days I’ll buy one!!

At first I found it hard to motivate myself to workout at home. But, them I purchased a few workout DVDs and downloaded some workout apps. And, I recently signed up for Fitnessglo to switch things up.

  17. Elyse @ Lizzie Fit on November 19, 2013 at 8:14 pm

I usually work out at the gym but sometimes I like working out on my own terms at home too! Especially if I want to do some crazy stuff like burpee-pushup-tuck jumps. People always look at you weird when you do plyo at the gym lol

  18. Katie @ Talk Less, Say More on November 19, 2013 at 8:30 pm

I really struggle to workout at home. I have trouble focusing without getting distracted by my todo list. And now that I work from home, I enjoy my time at the gym even more as it allows me the opportunity to get out of the house.

  19. Nikki @ will run for pizza on November 19, 2013 at 8:34 pm

I work out at the gym. I do some group classes and run. I have tried soooooo many times to workout at home, but I am just not motivated enough to push myself. When I get home, it’s my “relaxation time” or cleaning….laundry….cooking…etc…I’ve learned that the gym works for me and I need a mean instructor to kick my butt in high gear.

  20. Laura on November 19, 2013 at 8:34 pm

I love working out at home. I am a cheapskate, and am generally self motivated. Aside from your blog, I love to use fitnessblender.com. So many free, awesome workouts. I’ve been using it since July (when I found it) and I haven’t gotten bored yet!

  21. Jaclyn on November 19, 2013 at 8:39 pm

I’m looking forward to an emphasis on at-home workouts! I recently gave up my gym membership in favour of being able to afford my favourite Barreworks classes. No longer a gym rat – strange, eh?

    (enough Canadianisms for ya!?)

  22. Melodie on November 19, 2013 at 8:54 pm

I’ve been a home-worker-outter for the past 5 years and 6 months. ๐Ÿ™‚ Since the day I became a mom and quit my full time job to stay home. We let the gym memberships go along with my salary. I’ve got countless DVD’s. The ever growing collection annoys my husband. I just learned this when I asked for T24 the other night. ha. But it’s hard to keep it up. It definitely ebbs and flows over here. I run on occasion (that also ebbs and flows big time). And your tabata workouts are a quick, little miracle for me. So yes, it’s hard for me to stay motivated and disciplined at times…like right now.

  23. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on November 19, 2013 at 9:01 pm

I do both! I love using my DVDs at home but I also love going to classes because I feed off of the energy. Can’t beat the convenience of home though! ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. Brittny on November 19, 2013 at 9:04 pm

I hit the gym three times a week and at home twice. I have tons of body weight boot camps I write up beforehand to keep things fun!

  25. Kelsey @ Ramblings of Change on November 19, 2013 at 9:12 pm

I am in love with my CrossFit gym. I was doing a lot of at-home workouts with DVDs and just hit a wall; at that same time, CrossFit FINALLY came to Duluth and I jumped right in without looking back. My CF Twin Ports family is amazing and the most motivational bunch around.

  26. Kathy on November 19, 2013 at 10:05 pm

“I can see how wearing a banana costume would make you want to dance a certain way”…that cracked me up, not a sentence you hear very often!
I probably prefer a gym workout just for the easy variety but it’s nice to have the home option on days when heading out in the rain or snow etc is just not appealing. Wishlist: indoor pool, I dream big!

  27. Elle on November 19, 2013 at 11:04 pm

How is your other little dog doing? You don’t seem to mention or photograph her much anymore… I am the mom to a rescue and I know they are hard work but once you get there the love they have to give is more than you can ever imagine – please don’t lose sight of that – they need someone to take a stand for them. It took my husband and I a good year to get our rescue to feel completely settled and comfortable – it was worth every minute!

    • Fitnessista on November 19, 2013 at 11:45 pm

she’s doing great. she’s had some regressions but on the whole, she’s made huge strides. she’ll come over for love and shake her tail with excitement now. i recently posted some pics of her riding in the wagon with livi on our walks. she just didn’t go this morning since livi was sleeping and she’s her riding buddy

  28. Shaina Anderson on November 19, 2013 at 11:17 pm

I joined the gym a few months ago and it was great for tri training since I needed the pool. I also love being able to get my workouts in while Tripp is having a blast in the kids club instead of attempting to get it in at home during nap time and either having my stretching time cut short because he woke up early, choosing a nap over my workout or not having any time to get chores done. I’m torn though because the best time for Tripp to go is right after breakfast when he’s happy, full and has lots of energy but that’s also a super busy time at the gym and the free-weights section feels like a meat market. Wah. I may be getting back into early AM garage workouts and canceling my membership. I’m putting a BOSU on my Christmas list!

  29. Becky @ TheBexFactor.com on November 19, 2013 at 11:20 pm

This is the problem I’m having right now. I’m a single mom working full time. Dad is in the picture but only on weekends so I’m unable to make it to Crossfit during the week which was my usual workout of choice and I loved it.

I live in a small apartment with very little equipment and I’m having a hard time getting any workouts in. I love to lift heavy and I miss it. I’m not motivated by body weight workouts and I feel like I’m never going to reach any of my fitness goals now. Womp womp.

  30. Jenny on November 19, 2013 at 11:28 pm

I go to the gym 3 times a week and work out at home on non gym days around 2-3 times a week as well. I prefer the gym, but find home workouts are a great time to do some of the more unusual bodyweight exercises and stretches that I’d feel too self conscious to do at the gym.

  31. Heather on November 19, 2013 at 11:33 pm

For some reason I cannot get motivated to work out at home. I always just go to the gym because once I’m there I have no choice! However, I always go for runs outside, I hate the “dread-mill” ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Elle on November 20, 2013 at 12:37 am

I workout half at the gym and half at home/outside. I can’t stand running on the treadmill, so I take my runs outdoors. My gym is great for lifting, but sometimes its nice to just pop in a video and workout in the living room.

  33. Alex @ Kenzie Life on November 20, 2013 at 12:38 am

I LOVE basketball so much! I’m the biggest NBA fan out of all my friends…including my guy friends! My workouts are at a Pure Barre studio or on the pavement in whatever neighborhood/park feels like fun to me that day ๐Ÿ™‚ I would love to have a treadmill though! Or an elliptical. Really I’d take anything for those cold winter days when it’s too snowy or windy to run outside.

  34. Jacqueline on November 20, 2013 at 1:11 am

I’m living at my parents’ house right now, which means a) all my old apartment stuff takes up the garage space and b) I can use my brother’s pull-up bar whenever I want… to do 1 pull-up at a time, haha. I would love a Garmin Forerunner 10… I’ve heard great reviews and would love the extra motivation to get out and run in order to wear it.

  35. Alexandra on November 20, 2013 at 1:12 am

A kettlebell would be kind of cool but what i really need are good shoes to work out in that aren’t my running shoes ๐Ÿ™‚

  36. Raya on November 20, 2013 at 1:12 am

I am starting to get anxious about fitting in workouts once Baby is here (less than six weeks to go!) and I worry about finding time to actually go to the gym. I think I will have to start finding some new DVDs to do at home, and get some more home equipment (all I have are a few dumbbells and a yoga mat). I am secretly coveting Insanity bc it uses such little equipment!!!!

  37. Kayla on November 20, 2013 at 1:20 am

If I could have ANY piece of fitness equipment at home, it would be a treadmill. We ditched our gym membership to save money, and since my twin girls arrived and the weather turned, I have hardly run at all…and I MISS it! So, if I had a treadmill, I would run a couple of miles after the girls go to bed at night.

  38. Katie on November 20, 2013 at 1:23 am

I’ve been trying to save up for a waterproof ipod shuffle. I recently broke my foot and need to start swimming for exercise, but it’s so hard to get motivated without any music.

  39. Laura @ Backstage Balance on November 20, 2013 at 1:23 am

Sweet home gym setup! I would love to add one of those single lane lap pools with the constant current, to our home. This would be a “if we won the lottery” type of item, of course!

  40. Jessica on November 20, 2013 at 1:24 am

I need a bosu in my life!

  41. Monica on November 20, 2013 at 1:32 am

Our home gym is definitely a work in progress… We are making do with some dumbbells and kettle bells so far- and plenty of outdoor space for running. Would LOVE an elliptical or some cardio equipment!!! Love the lashes, Gina!

  42. Renae H. on November 20, 2013 at 1:38 am

I’d love a dance room or workout room with weights! Oo and maybe a rower….

  43. Jessica on November 20, 2013 at 1:41 am

I usually workout outdoors, but I use the gym too. Since the weather is getting colder and since I almost got ran over Sunday morning while I was running, I really want a treadmill. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d love not to have to step outside other than going to class on cold days ๐Ÿ™‚

  44. Kristina m on November 20, 2013 at 1:57 am

I just had my 2nd child 7wks ago and got the dr’s ok to work out. I’m a stay at home mom/wife so the gym is my time to just focus on me . I tried working out from home after my 1st child and always got distracted or needed so I have to leave the house now. My must haves are good shoes, great music .

  45. Kristie on November 20, 2013 at 2:37 am

    Bosu! and a TRX thing-a-ma-bob!

  46. Laura on November 20, 2013 at 3:59 am

I usually workout at home or run outside! With winter looming and a new baby at home, I’d love a treadmill!

  47. Vicky on November 20, 2013 at 4:04 am

I’m a huge at home workout fan– I’ve loved winsor Pilates foreverrrr and am excited to try soli beat!! As far as gadgets go, I’d love a polar ft40!

  48. Sara on November 20, 2013 at 4:35 am

I always workout at home. That way I can spend as much time with my little man as I can after work…no driving to the gym and back. We have a treadmill, elliptical, some dumbells, physio ball, bosh ball, some steps, a jumprope (thx for your suggestion!) and a pull up bar that I can too scared to use :). I do take an aerial yoga class once a month with my girlfriends and I’m going to try a free pure barre class on Friday though:)
I would LOVE a kettle bell or two and a new treadmill ๐Ÿ™‚ I actually prefer working out at home I can just run downstairs and get it done while dinner is in the oven or hunter is getting a bath.

  49. courtney on November 20, 2013 at 5:53 am

I am asking Santa for a garmin watch. Nothing too fancy but something I can use for my runs without having to carry my phone and worry about dropping it.

  50. Bridgette on November 20, 2013 at 6:08 am

What a nice little home gym! And I completely agree that it is so much harder to workout at home. I did so much better when I had to get my butt up and drive to the gym. The couch is a lot easier to sit on than my yoga mat. Lol. Which, speaking of, it’s not so much a gadget, but I really really want a good thick yoga mat ๐Ÿ™‚
