Working out with North Face
This post brought to you by The North Face. The content and opinions expressed below are that of The Fitnessista.
I’m always on the prowl for new and fun at-home workout options. I’m thankful to have memberships at a couple of studios where I teach, but when I want to get in a quick naptime workout, I love to work out here at home. I’ve gotten pretty good at it over the past couple of years, but it used to result in disaster, which means I would get majorly distracted. I’d look around and decide to clean the house, my phone would beep/ring, I’d waste some time on Twitter or Facebook, and would end up taking way more “breaks” than I needed. In order for me to get in an awesome workout at home, I found out that I need a set plan in place. Winging at at home doesn’t quite work out for me. Something new that I’m loving: the Mountain Athletics App. It’s free for iOS users (they also have their workout videos available on YouTube for my Droid friends), and provides access to expert-designed, 6-week strength and conditioning training programs specific to outdoor sports including, running, skiing, climbing and mountaineering.
Some of my favorite features:
Monitored Progress. They track your progress as you go, so you can easily check back and see what you’ve accomplished.
Detailed session calendars. The plans are extremely detailed and well-designed. You go into the workout knowing exactly what you’re doing, and the safe form to accomplish it.
Workout schedules. These are balanced plans mixing unilateral and bilateral strength, core training, cardio and rest. Coaching messages, to assist with proper alignment.
Tutorials. I think these are the most helpful. If you’re unsure how to do a move, you can simply watch a quick video to have it explained, or read text that explains the moves. The workouts are guided by athlete training videos, which include countdown timers. As little tokens of motivation, you earn badges along the way and share your progress via social media.
I’ve also been using the workouts for gym inspiration. When I go to the gym for strength and want to try something new, it’s perfect to pull up the app and get some ideas.
Here’s one that I tried recently, modifying for pregnancy:
Warm Up: 4 rounds
5x burpees
8x box jumps (or box step-ups)
8x sit ups (I did a 30-second plank instead)
3x 40-ft shuffle runs (or in my case, shuffling back and forth around the living room)
Work continuously for 8 minutes:
Burpee box jump + 40 ft sprint
Rest 5 minutes Needless to say, it was pretty killer.
I did box step-ups instead of jumps, and got in an awesome sweat in a short amount of time. There was also a core component, but I planked instead.
To get set up, you only need a couple of things: comfortable shoes, a few tools (check out the workout in advance and see what you need) and music if you’d like to use it for your workout. That’s it! I love that the app is free and that it’s great quality. Some of the paid apps I’ve tried in the past have been major womp-womps.
I’ve been enjoying the new app, and still going crazy for the gear from Mountain Athletics from The North Face. They have an amazing selection of functional, comfortable workout apparel, which I’m especially loving for fitness classes and yoga. It’s not too late to enter the amazing giveaway: a chance to win a $500 North Face gift card! Just sign up via the widget below.

would love to win some north face gear 🙂 !!
For at home workouts I use pinterest and find workouts to target my goals for the day. I often use your workouts too. I love them!
I’d love some new lounge clothes!
Ha, I come here for fitness ideas and inspiration.
Would absolutely love to try out The North Face apparel as I’ve heard such good things but cannot find it here in Malaysia..
for home workouts i do a lot of yours! the occasional tone it up and pinterest mixed in 🙂 love north face!
Love this app! I’ve been using it at the gym and at home 🙂
I’m a big fan of my North Face winter coat. Super lightweight but extra warm!
This app seems great and I’ve always loved North Face!
Something that is easy to follow and doesn’t use a lot of equipment. If it’s too complicated I won’t bother with it
I love all the workout tanks and shorts! I think it might be fun to try a running skirt… 😀
I love doing quick circuits when working out at home! Except I get distracted too so home workouts are a rare thing for me!
I love fitnessblender and your YouTube channel Gina. I also like working out at home too since I have little ones and I hate putting them in the gym daycare when they have been at daycare all day. I also use the app fitocracy to track my workouts.
The North Face workout gear looks so cute and functional! I bet it’s really high quality too. I’d love to try it out!!
Would love to win new workout stuff. Gonna download the app. I usually pick random crossfit movements and just do that but this seems much more intentional!
Awesome! I’ll have to check out this app. It sounds like a good one and that’s great it’s free.
An app I LOVE that I’d highly recommend is Yoga Studio. It’s a few dollars on the App Store, but it’s well worth the price. I use it all the time for an at home yoga workout. The best thing is there are multiple classes to choose from based on your skill level and how much time you’d like to spend (for example, a 15 minute beginner class or a 30 minute advanced class.) It’s a real gem as far as apps go, in my book! 🙂
So random but I love your braid!! I really wish I could french braid my hair!
thank you!
I would love to try out the Women’s Venture Jacket and some of their workout pants!
Looks like a great app. It’s nice that it doesn’t only tell you what exercises to do but also how to do them. Home is my favorite place to work out. I’m sure this will come in handy. Thanks.
Yes! Totally understand the whole getting distracted while working out at home. An app to keep me on track might be helpful!
Oddly enough it’s a pair of their casual shoe/sandals that have been my favorite. I use NTC a lot so excited to check out this new app for something different.
totally random but i love your braid! i am hopeless at hair and cannot do a braid to save my life. moving on 🙂 i would love to win the North Face gear and love the workout tank!
I use YouTube for a lot of my workouts. They have any kind of exercise that you are looking for. And it’s free!
I usually do your workouts when I work out at home. This week I am doing last week’s summer shape up workout 1 schedule.
INSANITY!!
Love North Face!
I’m from the pacific northwest, and North Face is a staple out there! Love it! <3
I would love to win some north face gear!
This app sounds exactly like what I need! I do all of my workouts at home, and I’m definitely stuck in the treadmill rut.
What an awesome giveaway! I’d love some new gear!
I too love your braid! I have to make my workouts at home short and sweaty or I will get distracted or find myself not pushing hard enough towards the end. I use a lot of your workouts and I also find quick ones on Sugar Pop!
Downloading the app right now! Excited to try it out 🙂
I recognize the gym you’re in! This looks like a nice app to try out instead of the Nike+ training one – I’ll give it a go next time I’m on the road.
I love the Nike Training Club App!
The North Face fleece jackets are great. I always wore them growing up!
Love North Face! Maybe I should try this app, because I generally fail at home workouts haha
I love the North Face but haven’t tried out any of their athletic apparel–just jackets. Interested to check it out!
The women’s dynamix leggings look so comfortable, and functional. Love North Face.
I still use my mom’s Northface backpack and sleeping bag from the 80s – they held up so well. The sleeping bag is amazingly warm!
That tank top looks like so comfortable! I love loose fitting tanks when I do an intense workout. 🙂
Completely agree with you for home workouts – somehow in the middle of them I find that I get all the dishes and cleaning and laundry and organizing and etc done! What helps me is to limit the workout to a short but intense circuit, planned beforehand. Is the app available on Android as well??!
it’s not right now, but all of their videos are on their youtube channel!
I have a north face backpack that I’ve had since college. It’s very high quality stuff!
I love bodyweight/HIIT circuits or some Tabata rounds to get more bang for my buck! I also happen to have a lot of the Fitnessista gems saved on my laptop and will often go back to older WSU/SSU videos for inspiration. 🙂
<3!
I love my kettlebell for at home workouts. It is definitely my go to. I usually set a timer and don’t allow myself any distractions until that goes off.
My at-home workouts lately have been from HIIT It! A pair of dumbbells, a timer, and my living room is all I need to get sweaty
For home workouts I follow a combination of your Monthly planners, Fitsugar on YouTube, and JessicaSmithTv.
I’d love some new workout clothes…some of my hiking and summer clothing is looking a little worn (and a bit smelly).
The small town we live in doesn’t have a gym so I’m stuck working out at home. I’ve been investing in my own workout equipment and have been using the workouts you post as guides to get in quality sweat sessions. I also have a Barre3 online membership.
I would love some new workout gear!!!
I definitely need more inspiration for workouts to do at home using minimal/no equipment! I will be downloading this app!
i’m terrible at motivating myself for home workouts…even at the gym, if i’m not taking a class, i have to go in with a plan (like, the type of equipment, the type of workout, etc. that i want to do today), or i’ll stand around scrolling through options on my phone! i like to download the printables/photos from your blog and others and get inspiration from them.
I have North Face snow boots and I love them – they are so comfy and keep my feet warm and dry.
I also work out at home so any workouts I can find to change things up a bit are great.
