Breakfast dessert and disaster strikes

Hey guys! Hope you’re having a good day :D

The jumble-aya last night came out beautifully:

001

The combo was so delicious and comforting- spices, veggies, kidney beans and short grain brown rice.

I forgot how much I really love brown rice:

002

(I had 1.5 bowls of the good stuff)

The pilot and I chilled for a while, he snacked on macaroons while we watched Family Guy and called it a night.

This morning, I had something I hadn’t had for bfast in wayyyyy too long:

003

(don’t you wanna dive in?!)

A BREAKFAST COOKIE!!!!

This one had brown rice protein, 1 small nanner, 1/3 cup oats, splash of hemp milk, Stevia, cinnamon and sea salt. Pure cookie bliss right there. Since I’ve been doing the raw until dinner thing, I’ve missed my breakfast cookies with all of my soul. I’m glad to have them back in my life :D

After bfast, I walked the puppies and then hit up the gym for some iron pumping action.

I did 20 minutes on the elliptical followed by shoulders, chest, triceps and abs. After that, I went to Target and the health food store –and actually managed to stick to my lists! For the most part. Heh- and then came home for some lunch.

I made one of my favorite salads ever: Suddenly St. Tropez salad by Natalia Rose

004

This version had spiralized zucchini, spiralized beet, balsamic, Italian seasonings, sea salt, goat jack cheese and fresh basil.

With a side of eggplant bacon:

006

I was happily munching my salad beast when I realized it was missing something: grape tomatoes! So I ventured into the kitchen for some and that’s when disaster struck.

Viesa ATTACKED Bella :( One second, they were barking at the leaf-blowing man in the backyard, the next second they erupted into horrifying fits of growls and the next thing I knew, Viesa had Bella by the neck and had her pinned to the floor. Of course, I went RUNNING into the living room as soon as I heard what was going on and no kidding had to pry Viesa’s fangs from Bella’s neck, and Bella was bleeding and shrieking like the dickens. I picked Viesa up, put her in the bathroom and closed the door, and went to check on Bell who couldn’t even cry—a hiss sound was coming from her mouth and she was shaking. One frantic phone call to the vet and then we were off to the animal hospital- Viesa stayed at home in her kennel.

The rest of my salad sat on the counter:

007

The vet cleaned Bella’s neck out, gave her antibiotics and anti-inflammatory vaccines and gave me medication to give to her for the next 10 days. I also have to heat pack her neck and clean it with hydrogen peroxide for the next couple of days.

The puppies are still separated –I’m giving them shifts.. one puppy can be out for a half hour while the other one is in the kennel, and then they switch- and tonight the pilot and I are supposed to talk about everything and figure out what we’re going to do.

This isn’t the first time this has happened, but it’s the worst it’s ever been. Viesa has always been dominant and after serious training for the past two years, we thought she was finally over her “phase”. Guess we were wrong. I really, really, really don’t want to give her away but it might be what we have to do.  We’re worried about having crawling babies around and her snapping again. This is especially important to me, because when I was 4 years old, I was attacked by a dog. I have stitched on my chin from the event and never want to see it happen to anyone else. I’m just hoping we can find her a good home in a no kids, no other pets household.

I’m still a little shaken up about everything, but I know we’ll figure it out. Just have to let the adrenaline settle. Usually in times like this, I’d go for a run, but I need my energy for spin later tonight.

Sorry leave on such a down note. It’s very unlike me :( I’ll be back to myself tonight, promise.

Enjoy your day <3

G

Coming tonight: Weight lifting 101 :D

Oh Gina, my heart goes out to you. Like you, I’m a huge animal lover and I’m sure the thought of you having to consider finding another home for Viesa is heartbreaking for you. I do understand that you need to protect Bella and any future babies (furry or human) that may come into your lives. I hope that you will be able to come to an answer that will be best for all of you and bring peace to all of you. :)

So sorry, Gina. Poor Bella. :( It is so hard when the pup is in pain. I think you will be able to find Viesa a wonderful home if that is what you decide after the PuppyCam put Shiba Inus in high demand!

Gina! this is terrible. I’m so sorry to hear about the attack. What a terrible experience to have gone through and that it’s happened before makes it that much worse. You and the pilot have to make the best decision for you and your family and of course, you’ll make sure that Viesa will go to a good home if that’s the outcome.

No one will ever doubt your love for puppers!

Aww that story brought tears to my eyes…I’m sorry that you have to make such a difficult decision. I wonder if there’s a shiba inu rescue in GA? Rescues always seem to do such a good job placing dogs. My parents got their dog through the PA shih tzu rescue and she has worked out so well for them!

i have been in this situation. with out a doubt it is heart wrenching. what is really sad is that there are so little options to choose from.our family dog would bite everybody, killed bunnies etc. we did end up keeping him but only because we didnt tell our parents…. we were afraid we would not get another dog. but we knew he wasnt a safe pet. some dogs need what we cannot give them, he needed a big farm or something to run on, so does viessa and im sorry. what do you think her dream home would be? then go from there

    Hi Gina!

I have been reading your awesome blog for about a month, haven’t commented yet…

Just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear about Bella and Viesa…thank goodness you were there. The same thing happened with my American Bulldog (2 years old) and my little mutt (8 years old)…

The AB attacked the little one and it was very, very traumatizing for my husband and I and the dog… (he is okay)…but we had to have our AB neutered as he was showing dog-aggressive tendencies at the park as well. This has improved the situation, but it took about a month for our smaller dog to allow our AB anywhere near him.

If you reintroduce them gradually, it will help. I always keep them in seperate rooms when we leave the house now, and it will always be that way; it’s for safety. Since there are two of you and two dogs, that helps- have the Pilot hold Viesa and you can love on Bella when you are all sitting/hanging out. Seperate their bowls and beds for now, too. And be firm with Viesa whenever ANY dog aggressive behavior is shown (timeout/verbal warning/kennel time) and give Bella LOTS of reassuarance. Also treats and verbal praise as you gradually bring them back together.

Ace and Spike are friends again… hope this helps !!!!

That sux :( Could you posssibly muzzle Viesa around the house? I know that they muzzle greyhounds here as they live in close quarters and are trained to chase small animals. Not ideal but then maybe you could keep her

I wish I could take her, but not sure she would like the flight to Australia….

Then send me my future grandkids, too! Just a thought, hee, hee! I love you, and great job on trying to keep them living together for now, Madre

we had a cat when my children were babies and the cat ended up living in the basement. it wasn’t a good situation but we did what we had to do for safety sake. he cat had several medical issues (and behavioral issues) so we couldn’t just give him away. it’s a very difficult situation but when babies are in the future, it is something you need to figure out. i knew someone who actually put a screen door on the babies room after they found their cat in the babies crib!!!

Hi, Gina. I second everything that Carrie said, good advice there on managing the two dogs. It sounds like displaced aggression in this particular attack. The leaf-blowing dude probably had Viesa overstimlulated, and she took it out on the closest thing: Bella. It doesn’t make any of it easier to deal with, but it is most likely the trigger.

Now, Shiba Inus are NOT the dog for a casual owner. As you know, they are very strong willed and dominant. My advice, if you decide to rehome her, is to get her into a Shiba rescue. They will be able to best decide what kind of situation would be best for her, homewise (only dog, etc) and they carefully screen the potential homes to make sure it’s a good one. A good rescue will also take her back into their rescue if the new home were not to work out for some reason.

Poor Bella and poor you guys…I know this is stressful and painful. I’m glad Bella’s going to be OK. Best wishes for whatever you decide.

Oh no! So sorry about the puppies. Once one of our dogs was on steroids (the vet gave it to her for an allergic reaction) and it made her very snippy. She is usually pretty dominant as well and attacked our other dog. It was the scariest thing ever, so I understand what you are going through. Luckily for us, it was only because of her meds and nothing has ever happened since. I agree with Carrie, there might still be hope for your girls. Good luck with everything!

Hey Gina! First off, yay for the return of the bfast cookie!!! It’s great to see them back:) You were saying you missed them since you started raw till dinner, but if you like them so much, shouldn’t you allow yourself to have one a few times a week? They’re pretty close to raw :-) Hehe that’s how I’d rationalize it anyway! I can never get away with 1/3 cup oats though, doesn’t fill me up, I usually gotta do 1/2 or more!
Anyway I was really commenting to say I feel for you on the puppy drama, so sorry to hear about Bella and Viesa’s scuffle. How heartbreaking! Obviously this is an insanely hard decision and it can’t be easy, *hugs* dear. I’m sure you feel awful but remind yourself at least you were there and were able to help Bella ASAP, because who knows how it would have gone down had you not been near. Wish I could be more helpful but I know you and hubby will make the right choice, just wanted to give you my sympathies!!! You will make the best decision possible.

Oh Gina, my heart goes out to you. My brother has had two Sheba Inu’s because he loves them so much. The first one attached our family dog and me several times, always over something like food or a particular area that he considered his. The second one did the same, but luckily he could send her back where we got her so he knew she was going somewhere safe.

It was heartbreaking both times because most of the time they were the sweetest dogs. I think they are just a breed that does best on their own. They are very territorial.

Ultimately, of course it is your decision and hopefully you can find another option than giving her up, and I really do feel heartache for you as you go through this. Pets are like family members and we love them no matter what their actions may be.

You will definitely be in my thoughts.
