Hawt Potato

Hi friends <3 How’s your day going?? Hope you’ve had a fabulous afternoon.

I’m back to fitness teaching and it feels SOOOOOO good 🙂 It’s been a while but it’s so nice to get back in the swing of things. Arizona is definitely starting to feel like home again

and I really like that 🙂

After today’s class, I munched a delicious amazeball:

ball

and a pack of seaweed snacks from Trader Joe’s.

The day was filled with errands, a walk with Bella (she has been a feisty little thing today!) listening to Daily Boost and How Stuff Works (two awesome podcasts), and then I made a lunch featuring something I haven’t enjoyed in far too long.

Potatoes!

As you guys already know, while I didn’t have an official eating disorder, I definitely participated in disordered eating back in the day, like many women do [I’ll do a post on my eating history in the near future] With all of the nutrition/diet/fitness books I read, eventually white potatoes began to scare the bejeezus out of me, so I stopped eating them. For a few years. I still prefer sweet potatoes (for taste and nutrition) but am really glad that I brought them back into my life.

A meal the Pilot would enjoy, too 🙂

Alexia red potatoes with portobello mushrooms, green beans, fresh rosemary, a pop egg (aka over easy) with 2 egg whites, salad on the side:

You’re delicious, Mr. Potato Head 😉

Quite a few diet and nutrition books have a knack for making readers fear perfectly healthy, whole foods, and encouraging chemical-laden low-cal crapola.

Amongst the garbage you can find in the nutrition/lifestyle section of the bookstore, there are also hidden gems.

Some of my favorites:

– The Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno

– The Raw Food Detox Diet and Detox for Women, both by Natalia Rose

– The Kind Diet, by Alicia Silverstone

– Abs Diet for Women (I agree with most of the stuff in this one)

-South Beach (I agree with most of the stuff in this one)

I’m also really excited to read this, which automatically appeared in the Kindle yesterday (I pre-ordered):

Crazy, Sexy Diet by Kris Carr

If you’re not familiar with Kris’ website, it’s an awesome resource for healthy, vivacious, eco-friendly living. I’ve skimmed through the pages, but already know it’s going to be amazing. Two of my good friends (Gena and Kristen) have recipes featured in the book, too 🙂

Well I’m off to read and chillax <3

Have a lovely night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

Gina

Glad to see Tosca Reno’s book making your list. I got Crazy Sexy Diet yesterday and nothing got done. I couldn’t put it down. Such a great resource.

I’m actually kind of iffy about any book that uses the word “diet” in its title! They scare me off because I don’t like the idea of following any sort of diet now that I finally am free of my disordered eating habits.

    • Stefania (Ingredients for Life) on January 19, 2011 at 8:05 am

Sucks that the word Diet scares people away since it’s used in such great books such as Crazy Sexy Diet, The Thrive Diet and The Eat Clean Diet.

      • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 9:46 am

diet is technically supposed to mean “eating lifestyle”, not deprivation, as many *diet* books have changed the meaning- ya know?

  3. Amy @ purewellnessamy on January 19, 2011 at 8:25 am

Two other really good cookbooks are “Clean Start” and “Clean Food.” Both are by Terry Walters who, like me, is an Institute of Integrative Nutrition grad. Last Friday, I flipped through both books at B&N while my son was playing with the Thomas the Train set, and then I impulsively bought both of them! The recipes are vegan, gluten free, and segmented into seasons. http://terrywalters.net/

Oh, and for when you’re feeling really crazy, the Alexia salt and pepper fries are delicious!

I also can’t wait to read Crazy Sexy Diet. Kris Carr has been popping up everywhere recently!

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 9:46 am

amazing- thanks for letting me know!

      • Amy @ purewellnessamy on January 19, 2011 at 10:55 am

I forgot to add that I bought the books even though I’m not strictly vegan or gluten-free – the recipes look that good. I am all about eating cleaner, seasonal, local whole foods.

And the name of the school is Institute *for* Integrative Nutrition 😛

Ugh – my brain is working faster than my fingers this morning.

Thanks for posting some love for the potato!! People often think its strange that I’m a healthy eater who eats potato… but I feel the same way you do… its a WHOLE FOOD!

I love your approach to healthy eating!

    Hi Gina,

Which brand of sea weed chips is that? Can’t make it out. I am trying to add more sea veges to my “diet”. thanks.

I love roasted red potatoes! I like to roast them in olive oil, salt, pepper, and thyme- then serve them alongside some wilted Kale. I then top everything with a fried egg and hot sauce and devour!

Since we’re talking books I am curious if anyone is familiar with the book 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth (http://www.amazon.com/150-Healthiest-Foods-Earth-Surprising/dp/1592332285)? A friend has it and recommended it and I am intrigued. It looks like a great book, but I have never heard of the author — who has some very strong opinions or philosophies. Anyone?

DC’s Express had an article on the Crazy Sexy Diet yesterday. I was very interested after reading the premiss! You’ll have to let us know what you think :).

I like how you mentioned the South Beach diet/lifestyle. So many people seem to disregard it because it limits carbs to an extent *gasp!* But really, the principles are quite true!

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 12:49 pm

and it focuses on HEALTHY carbs, which i love 🙂

  16. Marg on January 19, 2011 at 12:47 pm

Thanks for the list, I’m reading South Beach Supercharged right now. I’m looking for the right plan to get me started eating better.

thanks for the book recs. have you heard about the engine 2 diet? i’d love some feedback from anyone that is familiar with it.

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 5:40 pm

      i’ve never heard of it

  18. kathleen on January 19, 2011 at 5:41 pm

i’m glad you are no longer scared of regular potatoes. they get such a bad rap but are a decent source of iron. now if they weren’t so good in chip or french fry form maybe people would stop thinking of them as “bad”. but i don’t think they’ll ever get there. poor potatoes =(

  19. Jessica T. on January 19, 2011 at 9:38 pm

I just read about this book today and I cut out the page from the newspaper to look it up online! I’m so glad you mentioned it and to read a lot of positive reviews. I will definitely be ordering this book!!!
    Thank you 🙂
P.S. I love reading your blog!

    • Fitnessista on January 19, 2011 at 11:42 pm

i think you’ll really love the book.. i can’t put it down 🙂
      thank you!

I love potatoes! I shunned them, too, for the same reason, even though my Irish heritage desperately wanted them, but then I read this: http://whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=48 and started eating just the organic potatoes my mother grows in bazillions every summer. Organic and diverse produce wins again! I eat them in burritos for a totally amazing perversion of a cultural food 🙂

    • Fitnessista on January 21, 2011 at 12:08 am

      yummmmmm
