In the spirit + Friday Faves

Everyone is in the holiday spirit in our house,

especially Bella with her snowflake bandana.

Bell 5

We decked the halls the other night, and it always feels so good to take out our ornaments after they’ve been packed away.

Last year was incredibly sentimental because when we’d previously packed them up, we had no idea where we’d be stationed or living when the Christmas stuff came out of storage.

Tree 2

It was hard to believe that it had been an entire year since I was waddling around the tree with my pregnant belly, waiting in anticipation for our little girl to be here. I had to stop myself from turning into a blubbering mushball when I opened Liv’s ornament from last year.

The tree is up, Amazon/Etsy Christmas 2012 has arrived, Elf on the shelf seems to be getting into shenanigans already

(did you know that chewing on the elf makes it extra magical??)

and we plan on doing lightstravaganza this weekend. Our neighbors seem to be waiting, too, but they also tend to be sneaky. One night the street is dark, and the next, there are inflatable holiday figures and elaborate light displays, dancing in time to “Oh Come All Ye Faithful” (ok, I made the last part up, but you get the idea).

Eats-wise, I managed to get out of the holiday spirit for the most part. One of the main things I like to do over the treat avalanche from Halloween to New Years is enjoy the respective foods during each party and event, but try not to let the festive feasts trickle in to regular meals. Somehow for me this year, Halloween managed to last until Thanksgiving (I blame the tiny Almond Joys and Reeses). What can I say? I was in the mood this year.

Salad 14

On Monday, I made a conscious effort to get back to normal-ish eats, and while I still had a small glass of wine each night, some pie innards and brownie (I need chocolate to survive), it felt like a good week. I was telling my mom that I was really dragging the past couple of weeks despite sleeping well, caffeine and eating enough to sustain my activities.

The reason: I was skimping on veggies, forgetting to take my vitamins, eating a lot of sugar and not drinking enough water. It had gone on for a couple of weeks and I started to feel the effects. Within a few days of making a few changes, my energy increase was incredible- that’s where the homemade dinners, felt tree and spray-painted pine cones came from, haha.

I was so happy that so many of you joined me in a week of clean eats, daily salad beasts and sweaty workouts! Here are some of the amazing pics you sent in.

Meg: DIY Yarn Puffs

I’m back with another DIY! This is one of my favorites because it requires very few materials and its purpose is multifunctional. With yarn, scissors, and a small piece of cardboard, you can adorn your home, gifts, and even yourself with these adorable yarn puffs! Materials: Tip: Your cardboard should the same length you’d like […]

Zumba with me! “Pegate”

Whenever things are stressful and stuff is going on, dancing always has a way of helping me put things in perspective, or even just forget about them and enjoy the moment.  I mentioned before that one of us was supposed to have surgery today, but it turns out that it’s not for another week. We […]

11/28: What I Ate Wednesday

I’ve done a couple of these before, and keep getting more requests for them, so I thought it would be a good day to do another since it was a fairly “normal” work day, even though I taught two more intense classes instead of one. It was also a normal life day, which can affect […]

Seasonal delights

I’m working (eating through) another What I Ate Wednesday post, but in the meantime, I had to share two of my recent Trader Joe’s finds: the tea is an old favorite (I buy an insane amount when they’re about to get rid of it for the rest of the year) and a new love. As easy […]

DIY Felt Christmas Tree

“One hot glue gun does not a crafty Gina make.”  I would be lying if I said that crafts didn’t intimidate me. Whenever I get the urge to DIY, the Pinterest feed instantly streams into my brain. Before you know it, I’m doubting and wah-wah-ing myself, when I remember that “if you run, you’re a […]

How we sushi roll

They look so professional, huh? That would be because the professionals at Takamatsu made them. When I knew we were having a sushi party -and we’ve had the kind where guests make their own rolls, it’s crazy fun- I figured I would leave this one to the pros since I wanted to have real fish […]

Baby turkey lentil muffins

I’m always excited to try out new recipes for Liv, especially when they’re protein-dense. She loves beans, chicken, fish and egg yolks, but I love looking for new ways to serve them, since most of the time, she’ll just have them plain with maybe some olive or coconut oil and herbs. A major thing we’re […]

Thinking outside the “box”

You may have seen CrossFit on my tentative workout schedule every week for the past, ummm, couple of months? Well, even with the best intentions, I still haven’t made it back. There are so many different class options, but no early morning beginner classes. I really want to learn all of the lifts/techniques and the […]

Gina: my first StitchFix

When Jenna first blogged about StitchFix about a month ago, I knew it was something I would love.  It’s kind of funny because I used to spend a lot more time in workout clothes and pajamas, but now when I leave the house with Liv, it’s kind of fun to wear “real” clothes since she’s […]

Merrier, brighter

Whew! Woke up feeling a little sore from yesterday’s long run. I’m definitely still breaking in the new Brooks, and while I like them so far, they don’t have the same mold-to-my-feet feel that the beloved Asics had. (Which is to be expected since I’d been working out in the same Asics for almost a […]
