Glamour…and so much pain

Hey hey hey! Howโ€™s your night going? Mine has been glorious, but got even better when I found out that the lovely Sarah, of Glamour’s health and fitness blog, Vitamin G featured my lunge and lift video on her blog today!!! WAHOO! This is the second time Iโ€™ve been feature on Vitamin G and Iโ€™m so stoked and honoredโ€ฆ Glamour is by far one of my favorite magazines ๐Ÿ˜€

Now that Iโ€™ve discussed the โ€œglamourโ€ portion of the title, onto the PAINโ€ฆ

I canโ€™t move.

Well, I can, but I hurt. So much. My aching back. My biceps. My abs. My life.

Thatโ€™s what happens when this guy trains you:

ron (source)

Thatโ€™s my buddy Ron, and he killed me today.

We did back and biceps and he definitely taught me some new weightlifting tricks. We talked a lot about nutrition and weight lifting and itโ€™s really cool to hear about things from a bodybuilding perspective, particularly how they do certain exercises to make muscles โ€œpopโ€ and grow. We also did 4 sets of every exercise and Iโ€™m used to 3. That will do it, let me tell you.

Next time, I get to train him. Payback??? You know it. >:) Muahaha

Tonight, all I wanted was lasagna.

lasagna2

oh, and wine ๐Ÿ˜‰

wine

Cooking is so much more fun with a glass of red in hand. Iโ€™m convinced it makes the food taste better ๐Ÿ˜‰

I made the filling out of onion, garlic, zucchini, squash, mushroom, spinach, sea salt, pepper, basil, oregano and olive oil.

filling

Used these amazing noodles:

and made my secret-for-now goat cheese ricotta

And layered all of the ingredients together, along with some goat jack cheese and this sauce

With a side salad, it was an amazing meal.

dinner

I lurrrrve these new placemats, napkins and napkin rings from the familia= my dad, stepmom and little bros included them in our Christmas package ๐Ÿ˜€

dinner (2)

Every bite was a glorious foodgasm. Iโ€™m off to put jammies on read, and fall into a delightful carb-induced slumber ๐Ÿ˜€

Have a great night and Iโ€™ll see ya in the morning with a 2009 re-cap ๐Ÿ˜€

xoxo,

Gina

Todayโ€™s tip (courtesy of Ron): Reps 1-9 donโ€™t really do a lot for ya- theyโ€™re the same as actions you would do in everyday life, like reaching into the dishwasher, bending down and picking things up, etc. Reps from 10 on are the ones where youโ€™re really tearing down the muscle and enabling change to happen– make them challenging and make them count.

Wow and wow is all I can say. I think I would be scared of your buddy there if he were to try to train me. I would probably run and hide or something extra cool like that.

That is a beautiful looking lasagna.
My eyes were playing tricks on me. In one of your pics you have the wine cork in the background. I thought it was a cigarette! ๐Ÿ™‚

      hahah lol. i would never.

  27. Julie Arangio on December 31, 2009 at 8:22 am

I have made lasagna with the Tinkyada noodles and it has come out amazing. I make a goat cheese “ricotta” filling, by mixing in the food processor: 1 large log of herbed goat cheese, 1/2 can of cannellini beans, 1 egg, garlic, oregano, sea salt, pepper, and shredded pecorino romano (this is sheep’s milk cheese). It’s even better than a real ricotta filling. Cannellini beans are my secret ingredient for a lot of recipes!!! I am hankering for some right now…..and it’s only 8:30 am here!

    • Julie on December 31, 2009 at 5:35 pm

BTW: My husband is Italian and very picky about Italian food, and he LOVES this lasagna.

  28. Lisa on December 31, 2009 at 9:13 am

I could eat that lasagna for breakfast, yum! I tried the bbq sauce you used the other day on a salmon burger last night and it was tasty too. Good luck w/ your blood test today, uugh.

  29. Stephanie on December 31, 2009 at 9:37 am

Fitnessista, I might just be your number one fan! But don’t worry about getting your blood drawn! I had to have my blood drawn literally for the first time ever last month and I was horrified. I didn’t watch and asked for a butterfly needle and it wasn’t bad at all, I PROMISE you! I was a little sore afterwards for several hours, (I have no idea why) but the needle part was a breeze ๐Ÿ™‚ I even had to have it taken again a week later. Didn’t hurt either time! Just think about being tough. Good luck, Happy New Year, and thanks for having such an awesome blog!

    • Fitnessista on December 31, 2009 at 11:28 am

thank you so much! good to know, so maybe i wont be such a chicken next time ๐Ÿ˜€

  30. JessicaR on December 31, 2009 at 9:45 am

Okay, I am totally confused now! I usually lift heavy weights in the 6-8 rep range because that is where I see the most progress. When I have done lighter weights, higher reps, I see very little progress. Does Ron lift heavy weights with higher reps? My boyfriend does that and I think he is nuts, but maybe I should try it ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on December 31, 2009 at 11:28 am

yep, heavy weights with higher reps. always more than 10. we did 4 sets of 15 and it killlllled

  31. Nikki on December 31, 2009 at 9:58 am

I have to tell you, I tried “Marys Crack” and it is the BEST addition to my salad w/Goddess dressing.. THANKS for the awesome tips =) Happy NY!! PS Congrats on the Glamour post, woo hoo!

  33. Lindsey512 on December 31, 2009 at 11:10 am

I’m with Dotsie, wondering if Ron recommended high reps. I have always heard one should do sets of under 10 reps where the last few are very challenging, when one wants to build muscle?

    • Fitnessista on December 31, 2009 at 11:27 am

nope, he said to always do more than 10 reps. he did 15 with me

  34. Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather on December 31, 2009 at 11:10 am

The lasagna looks so yummy! Bummer you’re so sore but it’s a good sore… right?? ๐Ÿ™‚ I hope you get good payback!

yeah it’s a good sore. but sheesh, haha

  35. Sally on December 31, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Hi Gina, just wanted to let you know I made the vegan cookie recipe you posted the other day and oh my goodness were they ever delicious! I have to be honest I had a few doubts about achieving baked tastiness without eggs, milk, or butter…but its official I’m a total believer. Thanks for the recipe!

    • Fitnessista on December 31, 2009 at 3:20 pm

whoo hoo! i’m so so happy to hear you liked them ๐Ÿ˜€

Congrats on Glamour (again)! Amazing. ๐Ÿ™‚ And how cool that you got to train with Ron. Safe to say it looks like he knows a thing or two about body building. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Happy recovering! (And New Year!)

Ginaaa!! Did you watch THE game?! I saw your twitter update…..

And oh boy! You really trained with HIM!??! I would be SO intimidated to train with that guy, but i’m sure you held your own ๐Ÿ™‚

The lasagna looks amazing! And veryy similar to how my mom likes to make it–she uses cottage cheese though! Interesting right!? XOXO

Ill know this week I think…

  44. Krista on January 1, 2010 at 10:07 am

Great lasagna, Gina! Are those noodles the type that need to be pre cooked or can you just use them right away?

    • Fitnessista on January 1, 2010 at 10:26 am

you need to pre-cook them. i undercooked them by about 2 minutes and let them cook the rest of the way in the oven.. they came out perfectly al dente ๐Ÿ˜€

  45. Alice on January 1, 2010 at 11:28 am

Oh coooool. I have been going between fear and excitement about my coming year in America, and your posts are always so positive and exciting. For example, trivial though it might sound, I can’t wait to get to the US and try all the amazing products you guys get over there – all the bloggers talking about Mary’s Crack and Goddess Dressing and Maranatha. I mean Sydney is great. Produce if fresh and plentiful, and it’s always warm enough to run and swim. I will miss that madly, but I am fired up.

    FIRED UP! Happy New Year.

  46. Amy B on January 2, 2010 at 7:09 pm

Oh I am going to make that lasagna soon FOR SURE! The filling looks awesomely fantastic…
