Date with the Bod Pod

Hi guys! Happy INDIAN FOOD WEDNESDAY! And holler to Michelle who celebrated a day early ๐Ÿ™‚ Whoโ€™s having Indian food tonight?

Some eggplant curry perhaps?

Or gajar halwa? ๐Ÿ˜€

This post is gonna be a quickie because I have a date with the Bod Pod.

BodPod

That funny little egg-shaped apparatus is going to tell me my body fat percentage and BMR (basal metabolic rate โ€“the amount of calories Iโ€™d burn if I laid in bed all day). You have to make an appointment on base, wear spandex (yeehaw!) and a swim cap (Iโ€™ll take pictures haha) and sit still in there while it calculates the informaciรณn.

From this website:

The BOD POD is an Air Displacement Plethysmograph (ADP) that uses whole body densitometry to determine body composition (fat vs. lean). Similar in principle to underwater weighing, the BOD POD measures body mass (weight) using a very precise scale, and volume by sitting inside the BOD POD. Body density can then be calculated:
Density = Mass/Volume
Once the overall density of the body is determined, the relative proportions of body fat and lean body mass are calculated.

Iโ€™m pretty stoked because this method is more accurate than using calipers and will be a great way to track progress while doing Insanity. As yaโ€™ll know, I believe that weight is a silly number and body fat % and how your jeans fit are the best way to see how youโ€™re doinโ€™.

Have you had your body fat percentage checked before? What method did you use??

If not, most gyms will do it for free. There are many ways to measure body fat (hand-held body fat analyzer, calipers, Bod Pod) and they all have different levels of accuracy, but as long as you use the same method consistently, youโ€™ll be able to track progress. Then throw your scale away, mmm k??

For dinner last night, I didnโ€™t want to make anything fancy schmancy since GLEE was on ๐Ÿ˜€ (and HOW AWESOME was Glee last night??!! The songs = mayjah chills)

fish and veg

I just had some baked wild-caught cod with cayenne, sea salt and pepper, and stir fry veggies and spinach with Nama shoyu, Garlic Gold, and rice vinegar. (And a little later, had some oatmeal.. I tried having breakfast before going to bed last night so Iโ€™d have fuel in my boday for this morning- it worked pretty well!)

This morning, the girls came over bright and early for our workout- we did the pure cardio and cardio abs DVDs today. I LOVE the abs workout. Itโ€™s ridiculous (of course), but feels amazing.

Post workout smoothie:

smoothie

-almond milk

-banana

-hemp seeds

-1 scoop Sun Warrior

-maca

-raw cacao powder

-frozen strawberries

-vanilla

Iโ€™m off to base to hop in the bod pod ๐Ÿ™‚ See ya later today with a readerโ€™s request post on Protein Powder.

xoxo,

Gina

Hey Gina! I have a question for you. I just started doing Insanity (this is my first week). Now I before was normally mixing up cardio with strenth training. I kinda feel like Insanity is a lot of cardio, but not much weights… do you have a suggestion on how to mix it up? would you do Insanity and strength in the same day? What are your thoughts?

    Thanks for the help!!

i heard that some people alternate weight days with insanity when they finish the program, which is what i’ll do what we finish the two months. i can already tell that while i’m leaning out, i lost some muscle in the process

Awesome advice, thank you!! I was concerned about that!! I really dont need to get too lean (not at all trying to sound cocky haha!) , so I think whatll do is use the Insanity as my cardio!
Thanks so much for your tip!

Gina, this is in no way a dig at you but didn’t you use a scale when you were losing your 40 pounds in your “Weight Loss Story?” You kind of have to use a scale to understand “weight” lost. I get a little agitated with healthy living bloggers writing about their “Journey to Health” and HOW MUCH weight they lost but encourage everyone else to throw away their scales!

I definitely agree that body fat percentage is one of the best measures of progress – when I was lifting I lost 2 pants sizes and only 1 pound BUT when I was doing mostly cardio the scale was my best gauge of effort. (Now I’m pregnant and the scale makes me cry haha.) It’s just interesting to me that the healthy living bloggers only encourage other people to throw their scales away after they themselves (the blogger) have reached a comfortable weight/size.

Maybe this is a decision you reached after you reached your goal? I wish someone would explain what they mean when they say that! Again, no disrespect to you, Gina, I’m just wondering where everyone is coming from when they say things like “throw away your scale” and “don’t pay attention to your weight!” Does that mean before or after we reach our “goals?”

      hey girl,
i totally understand what you’re saying. i didn’t really rely on the scale when i was losing weight but i definitely used it- most of the time, i didn’t want to know and didn’t want to jinx myself. the first time i stepped on the scale while i was trying to lose weight was when i had already lost 10 lbs. before then, i did notice that my pants started to fall off of me– a new pair that i had bought that still had the tags on fell off when i put them on. i could tell that it was a good sign.
during my weight loss journey, i weighed myself every couple of months. i think you can do it either way, but constantly weighing can cause a mental affect on your body.. not sure why, but whenever i have clients that weigh themselves at home everyday, they keep telling themselves that they can’t lose weight and some actually gain weight. when i tell them to forget about the scale, things actually start to happen.
so i can see how weighing yourself consistently can motivate some people during the journey and also believe that it hinders some people. it really depends what’s best for you. i understand what you mean about it being easier when you’re in maintenance but think it’s smart to lose the fixation with the scale numbers as early in the game as you can. if someone would have told me that i might gain weight from muscle and that weight didn’t really matter, i might have done it differently. i didn’t know, so i checked my weight every couple of months.
      just my two pesos <3

Thanks so much…I’m gaining a lot of weight with this baby and I’m starting to freak out about losing it afterwards. I keep reading “throw away the scale!” and thinking “What?!?! I have 30 pounds to lose!!!” I’ll definitely try that – weighing myself every few weeks/every months just to get an overall picture instead of daily. I’ve been doing your pregnant circuit training the past 2 weeks – I love it!

Hi Gina, do you know how I can find out if there are any locations near me (in NJ) that have a bod pod? Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2010 at 4:58 pm

i’d call local gyms and universities to see if they have one <3

  7. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on April 28, 2010 at 6:03 pm

Thanks for the shout out Gina!!! I have mucho leftovers tonight, so I’ll still be celebrating with you. I have been craving that gajar halwa all day ๐Ÿ˜€

  8. ari on April 28, 2010 at 7:53 pm

is that expensive, do you know? i know you said most gyms would measure body fat percentage for free but i feel like doing it in a bod pod would be expensive since it’s such a high tech piece of equipment.

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2010 at 8:07 pm

when i was researching it online, the average price seemed to be around $40. on base, it was free

  9. Running Betty on April 28, 2010 at 8:56 pm

Didn’t the girls trying out for Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders sit in that? (on that TV show Making the Squad, or whatever it’s called…)

I had my curry today for lunch. Potato, sweet potato, zucchini, carrot and onion in curry, cumin and coconut milk.

    • Fitnessista on April 28, 2010 at 9:12 pm

yes! that’s how i had to remind my pilot of what it was, because i used to LOVE that show. and made him watch with me.. which i’m sure he didn’t mind too much ๐Ÿ˜‰
