3 Little Javelinas
is a lovely children’s story that was read to pretty much every Arizona child while they were young. It’s like a southwestern version of “The Three Little Pigs.” Even though I’ve always known about javelinas, I’ve only seen them from afar.
A guest walked into my tubing class today and said “I saw a wild pig on the way here!”
What?!
I want to see a javelina!
Apparently someone heard my brain’s wish because I was greeted by a family of 6 (!) walking back to the main spa.
As awesome as they were, it was a little scary.
Apparently they’re pretty harmless, unless they have a baby with them and feel the need to protect or defend their family. There were 2 babies! Thank goodness for the iPhone’s ability to zoom after you take a photo.
Work was pretty chill today. I taught a few classes, we practiced our dance for the show, and I ran home to make a quick lunch and grab snacks for the afternoon.
Brown rice tortilla wrap with olive tapenade, turkey, veg, Goddess dressing
jar of almond butter to snack on + a Vega bar.
Bell was jeal, until I gave her the other half of her sweet potato from the other night.
I went back to work to practice and hang out until it was showtime. Tonight was kind of my last hurrah since I’m done teaching Zumba until the baby makes her arrival. We did a really fun Zumba medley, and I’m pretty stoked that I made it to 9 months feeling good and having the ability to do what I love so much.

The best part? My bro and the Pilot were there to watch the show, too 🙂
We just got home and are going to grab some dinner- hope you all have a lovely night!
See ya in the morning <3

Something to think:
"And we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by at least one laugh.”
Friedrich Nietzsche
Happy Mama=Happy baby!
The pigs would’ve freaked me out a little bit too! Were you able to videotape the show? Glad it went well!
I saw that family!! Pranced by as I was doing the TRX and Flex class, adorable. You’re a rock star, that must’ve been so fun!!
I wish I could take zumba more often! The gym closest to me is so expensive that I can’t afford to join right now. It’s the only exercise I’ve enjoyed in years and my heart hurts from not being able to shake it. 🙁
Oh wow I’ve never heard of javelinas before! That’s so cool you got to see them!
I went to Miraval last year and saw javelinas too! <—- it was amazing! (Miraval and the hyenas!) I mostly hiked, mountain biked, did some photography, and got massages….but I wish I had danced more! Maybe next time!
I came across a family of javelinas one night while out walking the dogs in my neighborhood – I was freaked out! They are bigger in person than you think they’re going to be! My sister claims she hit one with her car once and it ran off unscathed but not before bucking her car bumper with it’s head (I’m pretty sure she’s lying ;))
I’m totally jealous of your javelina sighting. I went to the Chiricahuas with a friend a few weeks ago and she really wanted to see a javelina and the jaguar. We saw neither 🙁 I’m totally envious over here.
aw, i remember reading that book in spanish class growing up! i thought it was cool 🙂 even cooler that you got to see them in person, although i’d be totally afraid!
Wild pigs are so scary! That is so exciting that you got to see them. I can’t believe how calm you are waiting for your baby – your confidence is inspiring. 🙂
I am actually going to be up all night writing a paper about Nietzsche – that quote is a lot happier than anything he talks about in the articles I’m using! Nice to think even 19th century nihilist philologists liked to do some booty shaking every now and again.
My parents live in Green Valley in town (not on the out skirts) and see them and other unusual animals pretty often. I have only seen their huge big footprints they leave in the gravel drive way. Did they make much noise?
That’s sweet that you had a Zumba party and I love the pink/black tutu-ish skirt. THAT is cute. And congrats on making it to 9 mos…and that your bro and Pilot could watch. Fun!
A javelina = I lived in AZ for 9 mos & never saw one. I thought they were kind of an urban legend. Guess not! WHOA!! Glad you were safe…they look…huge! from your pics of them.
Wow! I live in Spain and we have plenty of them in here.. I mean, I live in the country and I see them next to me every day!! They are awesome but veeeeery scary too!
The name ‘javelina’ makes me think of something small and cute (that’s usually what the ‘ina’ suffix means in Italian) and then I see they are wild pigs! Ahahaha. I once came face to face with one in the bush in NZ and it was about 200 lbs of snorting, spiky death with huge tusks. Luckily I had my mum’s bull terrier (the stocky english kind, very wide and muscular) and she baited it while I ran like bloody hell to the car. It gashed her thigh severely but I emptied my bank account to pay the vet bill without a single complaint.
Hmmm… not sure where I was going with that. I guess your piggies are not the sort I’m used to! Your concert looks super fun. I love that sort of thing. You will have so many in your future with your little girl too.
WHOA!!! that is crazy… so glad the dog could protect you <3
Mmmm that wrap looks delicious! And the green bar is totally my fave vega product!
First scorpions and now wild pigs? You make Arizona sound like a scary place to live! 😛
haha it’s not too scary, but the wildlife here is interesting to say the least 🙂
Love the Zumba skirt ! I recently made some purchases off the Zumba website and am excited to try them out at my first Zumbathon this weekend with my Mom & sister & friends & their families !! (: As for the javelinas, I had seen pictures of them before on a friend’s FB. They look so neat ! I don’t think we have them around here though ..
have so much fun at the zumbathon!!!
That lil lady is going to miss shaking in your belly lol!
i know! at least i’ll get to dance with her when she’s out of the belly- that will be even more fun 🙂
Those piggies are SO cute! What a great sighting!
Sumba sounds like so much fun, but the only time I tried it, I felt like the biggest fool! I may have some balance and coordination from being an athlete, but I have ZERO rhythm and cannot shake my booty whatsoever 😛
Haha I feel the same way ! Idk how I ended up with no rhythym (since I have played the guitar and various instruments my whole life) and also have been an athlete .. I just can not shake my booty or hips or those little chest jiggle things they do, lol. And it was worse when I tried belly dancing, because I lack the gracefulness, that when they do the snake arms, my arms just flail rigidly hahaha. You are not alone ! I still do Zumba though because it is fun & I work up a good sweat ! Plus love the music and my instructor !
yep, having fun is all that matters! you don’t have to be a pro dancer to have a blast and get in a great workout
it doesn’t matter- it’s just for fun! the more you go, the easier it gets, too
That’s so awesome that you got to teach almost right up to your due date 🙂 I would be kind of scared to see wild pigs though lol.
That Zumba skirt is super cute. 🙂 I really need to try Zumba one of these days! I used to love to dance and now I don’t do it enough!
I think that’s awesome that you were able to teach into your 9th month!
I live in south Texas and the mascot at our university (Texas A&M University-Kingsville) is the Javelina!! I had no idea what that was when we moved here (for the Navy)… and now I’m well aware! I’ve seen many-a-cars damaged by huge javelinas on the highways… we also have blue-eyed snakes called blue indigos, and a cross between a giraffe and horse-type animal called “nilgai” that I had never heard of, check ’em out… pretty CREEPY! 🙂
those are really cool/creepy!!
You girls looked so GREAT!! SO happy for you!
So funny, I’m from Phx and def read Three Little Javelinas. I’ve never really encountered them in Phx but def did when I went to UA. They fa-reak me out though!
I lOVE The 3 Little Javalinas. Growing up in New Mexico, my sisters and I were definitely read that book. 🙂 that’s so cool you saw some, though! I love the Nietzsche quote:)
