Monsoon Sweat Workout
Oh how I love squash blossoms.
Then again, I love anything that serves as a vessel for goat cheese consumption 😉
When I saw the squash blossoms at the farmer’s market, I knew we had to get a bunch. It had been quite a while since we had them, and they would be the perfect component for the Herbs de Provence goat cheese we had just purchased from another vendor.
I took the squash blossoms and trimmed the ends, washed them well -at this point a spider jumped out at me! Basically, I had to fight for my life to make these squash blossoms- and lightly fried them in a little canola oil. Last time, I dipped them in egg mixture and brown rice flour, and I regret not doing it this time. During naptime, I had made a GF buffalo chicken creation for the blog (it will be up later today!) and was sick of dipping and breading things. Hashtag blogger problems.
Despite the fact that they were better last time, they were still insanely wonderful. The light sprinkle of sea salt is always a good touch 🙂 We enjoyed the blossoms with turkey (in a spicy-sweet honey glaze) and simple salad + more goat cheese.
After our delicious dinner, I went to the gym to get some weights.
(Hiding in the weight machine room because taking a gym selfie is goobery, but letting someone see you take it is extra goobery, haha.)
The original plan was to get in some quick strength since I figured I’d be really sore from Saturday’s teaching. It ended up being an easier day than my usual Saturday (1 Zumba instead of 2!) and I felt energized to do some cardio. The monsoon weather has FINALLY come in, welcomed with open arms, and has really cooled things down. It’s amazing how motivation changes when you aren’t dripping in sweat walking from your car to the gym 🙂
After a quick dynamic stretch and how-ya-doin with with foam roller, here’s what I did:
It only took 40 minutes and I was drenched in sweat walking back to my car. Victory!
This morning, Liv and I are off music class, a couple of errands -I finally started decorating the entertainment center and am having a little too much fun- and then swimming with friends.
Hope you have a wonderful day!
xoxo
Gina
Are there any rare veggies/fruits you get excited to see? I’m always thrilled when persimmons make their appearance.
Can’t wait to try this workout!!! <3
Perhaps this question is silly, but what is AMRAP? 🙂
as many rounds as you can complete in the 10 minutes
thank you!
I never knew you could eat squash blossoms! I want to try them but have never seen them at the markets near me. Now I will be on the lookout! Thanks!
Nice workout! I love how much it switches up, those are my favorite kind. Not really ‘rare’ per se, but I love getting okra in the summer!
I need to make those goat cheese blossoms! They sound delicious. I’m trying to compile a list of recipes to make for Josh and I as we move into our new apartment. I want to make us lots of homecooked meals.
where do you normally take your photos? there is never anyone in there
at the gym! but since i go at night, many times it’s just me 🙂
As it’s pouring down rain right now and I’m envisioning my workout later, this may just be perfect! I cannot stand the treadmill unless I am constantly switching up speeds/ inclines, because I get SO bored (but I can run outside at a constant pace without thinking twice – funny!). Thanks for sharing. I get super excited about dragon fruit … I don’t even like it THAT much, but we had it on our honeymoon so it brings back great memories!
Those squash blossoms look great! I have never made anything with them because I always get nervous that I will mess them up but you make it look pretty easy.
I agree with you about the selfie photo thing. I hate it when people catch me doing it!
I like Asian pears, but I don’t run in to them too often
Squash blossoms are always so pretty, I hear them too.
This workout looks awesome, I love that it changes up so much. Variety always makes workouts fly by!
I have never had squash blossoms, I wonder where I can find some near me…time to research! I love anything I can eat goat cheese with as well!
Can’t wait to try it! I really like the incorporation of cross-fit style circuits without the cross-fit style lifting weights that weigh more than I do. 🙂
That workout sounds like a blast! I love AMRAPs and HIITs so I will definitely be giving this a try once I can start working out at my campus’s rec center again. Counting down the days until then! I work for the University of Alabama’s sports nutritionist so I could actually workout at the complex (with all of the athletes, hello football players! ;)) but I’m a little intimidated, haha.
What time do you usually workout if it’s after dinner and do you have a post-workout meal?
Can’t wait to try this workout! I am, however, a wimp when it comes to pull-ups, I’m working on them. Any tips for mastering the pull-up? And what could I do in it’s place? Thanks!
So I planted a garden for the first time this summer and I got a lot of HUGE squash plants. With HUGE yellow flowers…but no squash. Ha! I read something about cross breeding? Who knows. I’m not a gardener. But I didn’t know I could use my flowers! Maybe it won’t be a total wash afterall!
Can’t wait to try this!! I’ve been bored with my workouts lately, so this will be good to spice it up!
I’m excited to see this GF buffalo recipe later too.
are your shoes reebok? I love the colors!
I’ve never tried squash blossoms! I should break out of my comfort zone and try them. Random, I know, but I’m eagerly awaiting the return of honeycrips. They’re the only apple I truly enjoy!
i saw the squash blossoms in your pic from yesterday & didn’t know what they were. that’s pretty cool, and, like you said, anything with goat cheese is near perfect!
Hi gina,
I noticed that you workout quite often after dinner, which I assume would be quite late at night… How do you deal with post-workout nutrition? Also, how do you avoid disrupting bedtime? I usually am wide awake after a workout!
Thanks for the workout, i am doing this tomorrow morning, hold me to it!!!!! You got me at “it only took 40 minutes”, i am all about that lately:)
I have never seen (or maybe i haven’t looked) for squash blossoms, so intriquing, looks yummy!
How do you manage to get a workout in after dinner? I think I would get sick…..but I’d love to do it, since nighttime means deserted gym!
I love the workout, will definitely do it on the weekend! Can the kettlebell be replaced by dumbells? I have no kettlebell yet.
Happy Monday!
I’m excited to try the Monsoon Sweaty Workout! My friend and I have been meeting 5x a week to do our own version of a summer shape up. We split the days between arms, legs, core, cardio, and mixed. This will be perfect for our mixed day today!!!
That workout looks great! I’ve been running so much to train for my half, and have been trying to squeeze in some quick (but hopefully efficient) weight/strength training too… I don’t know how you get yourself to the gym after dinner though – I usually want to sleep by that time haha.
I am going to a conference in a few days and was trying to figure out what I would do for my workout, since I was dreading running on the treadmill… This just might be the ticket! The hotel gym is pretty well stocked, so I’m totally trying this!
That sounds like a great workout! The blossums looks amazing too 🙂
I love blossoms too – I really want to try recreating a recipe I saw on tv last year – stuffed zucchini blossoms with a ground turkey mixture. They looked SO good!
I have some beautiful squash blossoms in my garden right now! I love them filled with cream cheese, but goat cheese sounds delish! I must try this ASAP!
This workout sounds right up my alley, love it! I think I have the equipment for everything aside from the pull ups – any suggestions for a substitute that could be done with just weights or a resistance band?
lat pulldowns with a resistance band would be a great option!
Awesome, thanks!
Gina- you look WAY to thin lately. Muscular and trim and fit of course, but way too thin! I hope everything is okay!
everything is great- thanks for checking in with me, though <3 my clothes all still fit the same, but i haven't weighed myself in months.
Heck yes to goat cheese. My kind of girl 😉
What do squash blossoms taste like? And what is the texture like? I have never seen or tried them. But I do love me some squash, so, who knows?
they’re very light/thin and have a mild flavor. since they’re so neutral, you could combine them with pretty much anything 🙂
Perfect. Doing this one tonight! Thanks.
Love this workout! Super clever name, too 😉
This workout was the perfect way to motivate myself today! I have been feeling a little bored with my weight workouts lately and this was just what I needed to get my arse in gear!! Thanks:)
I never realized you could eat squash blossoms….hmmm…
Gina:
Like a couple of the other gals above I am just curious about your nighttime workouts and how you manage them with eating/sleeping etc? I’m assuming you must have a n early dinner – so you have an hour or two before you start the workout? Then, do you have a snack or mini-meal after? And are you too hyped up to sleep?
I never accomplish much after dinner – just reading blogs and wasting time on pinterest usually 🙂
Thanks!!
Gia! Just wondering what speeds you used for the HIIT portion of that workout? Thanks! Sarah 🙂
We were completely flooded her in Scottsdale. I didn’t squeeze a workout in all weekend but now after reading this excuse I had no excuse!
Perfect! I just moved to India, and we’re in the middle of monsoon. We’re very schweaty and wet here! The gym has no a/c either!
Love this work out!!
I am wondering, what are “max” pushups and squats?
I can’t wait to do this one tmrw 🙂
Also I have never had a squash blossom, sounds lovely.
as many as you can do in 1 minute!
Gina, just wanted to say that you look amazing! So fit and healthy 🙂 Keep up the good work!
thank you, tricia 🙂
Just did this workout today at the gym when my strength class was cancelled. Damn, I broke a sweat! like, majorly. Those HIIT sprints at the end… phew. Thank you for kicking my butt 🙂
I did the Monsoon Sweat Workout and I gotta say that I looked like I had jumped into a pool of water by the time I was done. I felt great afterwards and was a good lunch hour sweat sesh! Thanks so much for the post on this 🙂
Love this workout!! And you’re looking amazing in your gym selfie, even if they are goobery to take 🙂
UM this workout looks INSANE. I kept reading thinking it was going to end – but the rounds keep going! Must try, thank you!
Monsoon Workout is awesome! I used a little heavier weights and I’ve been sore for the last day or two- Love it, thank you!
Just did this today (better late than never!) and I really liked it! I love workouts that hit everything and don’t take too long. I was totally drenched by the end, but felt really energized!
