Thank you so much for all of the wonderful comments on my race recap! I’m hobbling around over here, but still have a smile on my face from an awesome weekend. We’ve had a blast with Kyle, Meg, Lindy and Luna, and went out to celebrate Meg’s birthday yesterday. 🙂 I was going to do another one of my monthly “10 ways to make it a (insert adjective) month” posts, but j’s. They’re a tough one. So instead of a June-themed post, how about summer in general?

There are so many things I’m looking forward to this summer, especially since we’re still exploring and checking out the places.

My summer bucket list:

-Have an outdoor movie night. I’m sure there are some public screenings, but I’d be happy in the backyard, curled up in the hammock chair with a s’more in hand.

-Make margarita and strawberry jalapeño popsicles. Need to get good use out of those popsicle molds 😉

-Take a road trip to wine country. I’ve never been!

-Attend an outdoor concert.

-Take Livi to a new park each week. There are so many fun and beautiful parks here! Last week we had a picnic with friends and played on a gorgeous park overlooking the bay.

-Go paddle boarding. They have Groupons often and it’s something I’ve always wanted to try.

-Do one outdoor workout each week.

-Start yoga teacher training. After wanting and thinking and wishing, it’s finally happening next month and I am so excited.

What’s on your summer bucket list?

Love your list! There are so many great parks here, I have been here 2 years and have not even made a dent;)

What yoga teacher training are you considering? There are so many great ones, I bet it would be hard to pick.

On my summer bucket list is Kayak camping, We went to Catalina and backpacked but you can also rent a kayak and paddle to your site:)

  2. Darien on June 2, 2014 at 8:13 pm

i live right near socal wine country – it is spectacular and only about an hour north of where you are. there also is a drive in theater near pendleton you could hit up!

  3. Megan @ The Skinny-Life on June 2, 2014 at 8:18 pm

I love this list! Outdoor paddle boarding and movies sound amazing especially now that it’s 110 in AZ and we’re stuck indoors until Halloween.

Gina!! Hope you are doing great and are loving San Diego! I am so happy you are enjoying it 😀

A couple of pointers for your list:

Checkout Cinema Under the Stars for a summer outdoor movie screening, it’s in Mission Hills!!

    https://www.topspresents.com/

Also, for the outdoor concert. we love going to the Trolley Barn Park in University Heights. SOOO family friendly, you can bring your own picnic and the kiddos all dance around. Great way to meet people and just have fun!

  8. Tiffany on June 2, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Cute post!!! Love everything you chose! Would joyful work as an adjective?

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:17 am

yes, i thought about that one along with a few others, but nothing was exactly what i was going for

  9. Jackie on June 2, 2014 at 8:49 pm

  10. Yaara Leve on June 2, 2014 at 9:09 pm

  11. emily @ emky shop on June 2, 2014 at 9:46 pm

Not sure what wine country you are talking about but you must go to Temecula’s wine country!! It’s amazing and very close to sd:)

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:16 am

i googled it after you posted this! we’ll definitely have to check it out

  12. Juliana on June 2, 2014 at 10:05 pm

Go to Sonoma! Napa makes auto parts. Get a bottle of bubbly and play bocce ball right off of the square, then have dinner at The Girl and the Fig. Cheers! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:16 am

      that sounds amazing 🙂

  13. shaina on June 2, 2014 at 10:13 pm

oooh! which teacher training are you doing? I’ve been thinking about it too and researching possible options for a few months after baby girl comes.

fantastic list! more disney trips should be on there though 😉

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:16 am

i’m doing it through a studio here in SD. it’s a 200 hour course through a local studio
and yes on the disney trips! i know we’ll be back in august for sure 🙂

      • shaina on June 4, 2014 at 4:45 pm

aaaaah…we have the socal pass so aug is blocked out, but you guys can def come over for dinner and baby snuggles if you want! I’m due Aug 6th.

        • shaina on June 4, 2014 at 4:49 pm

wait just kidding, only 2 weeks are blocked out…but prob won’t go with a 1 week old anyway 🙂

  14. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on June 2, 2014 at 11:17 pm

You moved to California at the perfect time – right before summer! Your bucket list sounds so exciting and fun!

Great to hear that you’ve decided on the yoga training. Sounds like you’ll have one busy teaching schedule! Are you planning on teaching Body Pump/Zumba/Barre classes too?

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:15 am

yeah, i think i’ll just teach 1-2 classes of each format each week, but probably barre the most. i’m not even sure i’ll teach yoga, but it’s something i’ve always wanted to do

  15. Susan on June 2, 2014 at 11:57 pm

That’s a great list! There are outdoor movies all over SD. Just google “Summer movies in the park”, and there’s one every week in a different neighborhood. My list is to get a new car before baby #2 arrives, walk around Mission Bay, eat up our CSA share produce every week, and lots of trips to the beach and pool. Oh, and homemade ice cream. I’ve been bugging my husband about an ice cream maker for months. It’s going to happen!!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:14 am

      awesome, thank you!!
which CSA do you use? i’ve looked at a couple but couldn’t decide!
homemade ice cream is a must, too. we have an ice cream maker and i always forget to use it.

      • Susan on June 3, 2014 at 6:42 pm

We use Be Wise Ranch (http://www.bewiseranch.com/index.htm). They’re a certified organic farm up in Escondido and conveniently drop off at my husband’s office. I think they have a whole bunch of drop off locations through SD though. There’s always lots of greens in the boxes, along with oranges (every box!), berries, and whatever fruit/veggies/herbs are in season. We have the bi-weekly box and it stays pretty fresh those 2 weeks, although if you spend more time in the kitchen than I do, I’m sure you’ll use it all up before then, haha. Good luck with your search!

        • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 8:02 pm

          wonderful. i’ll check it out!

  16. Harsha @ Healthy Cooking 'N' Fitness on June 3, 2014 at 12:12 am

Awesome bucket list Gina. My Summer bucket list is to explore more hiking hills, trails in Denver. Take my daughter to swimming classes and explore Colorado more.

  17. Haley @Cupcakes and Sunshine on June 3, 2014 at 12:28 am

to pick fresh strawberries! And to take a few yoga classes.

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:14 am

      love picking strawberries!

  18. Laura B @ FitMamaLove on June 3, 2014 at 12:32 am

That’s so cool that you’ll be starting YTT after you’ve been thinking about it for so long!

Paddleboarding is a pretty fun way to do something active outdoors. It will be great in such a beautiful location.

My summer bucket list is all about making it to the beach as many times as possible with the kids and making good use of the pool at the Y. I’d like to do a night at the Santa Cruz boardwalk too, which I haven’t done in forever. Just simple stuff that makes it feel like summer. Lots of watermelon and popsicles too!

  19. Polly @ Tasty Food Project on June 3, 2014 at 12:55 am

Outdoor movies are so much fun! The last outdoor movie I saw was Forrest Gump last yea. It was nice to see an old favorite movie!

That’s great that you’ll be starting yoga teaching soon! What kind of yoga will you be teaching?

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:13 am

i’m not even sure if i’ll be teaching, but it’s something i’ve wanted to do to deepen my practice

  20. Annalisa on June 3, 2014 at 1:18 am

I love your list! I really want to rent kayaks and kayak across the Puget sound (we just moved to Seattle). Im originally from the desert too so all of this outdoor weather stuff near water is so much fun. Good luck with the yoga cert!!

  21. Cassie on June 3, 2014 at 1:23 am

Wine country tip: Santa Rosa is less expensive and less pretentious than Napa/Sonoma. 😀

If you make it to the Bay Area, get a pass for 24 Hour Fitness and come check out my BodyPump and TurboKick! Please? 🙂 Hope you’re loving Cali!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:12 am

i’ll be there NEXT WEEK 🙂 email me and i’ll let you know if i can take a class while i’m there

I really want to check out one of the outdoor movies along the lake in Geneva and go water skiing!

  23. Lisa on June 3, 2014 at 3:11 am

Such great ideas! My summer bucket list is simple: try to get the most out of the outdoors (hiking and SUP included!)

Also, what are your tips to settling in a new place and discovering what the city has to offer? You always seems to find awesome healthy eats, outdoor spaces, and fitness experiences! I’m going to be moving a lot in the next few years…

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:11 am

friends and the blog world have helped so much with recommendations! do you have any friends where you’ll be living? if not, start checking out reviews online. yelp is always a great source!

  25. Runner Girl Eats on June 3, 2014 at 6:39 am

Love your summer bucket list! I may have to steal a few of these…my bucket list includes lots of outdoor meals, a few great books, and tons of beach time.

  26. Meg @ A Dash of Meg on June 3, 2014 at 6:54 am

did you know Ontario is all about wineries 😀 Niagra Falls… Niagra on the Lake….. COME 😀

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:10 am

      dude.

  27. Melissa on June 3, 2014 at 7:07 am

What sort of teacher training program are you undertaking? My bucket list includes lots of activities for myself and my family but also some goals for fundraising for our local food cupboard as I’m in charge of their marketing and events planning. Its always a tough time of year to raise money and with kids out of school (and missing out on free meals) its is when low income families really struggle the most).

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:10 am

it’s the 200 hour program through a local studio. they do a lot of power classes and hot flows, but i especially love the vibe and atmosphere
thank you for working so hard to help hungry children and families <3

  28. Karen on June 3, 2014 at 7:14 am

Paddle boarding is the best…I can’t wait to hear about your experience when you get this opportunity.

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:07 am

      i’ll definitely blog about it!

  29. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on June 3, 2014 at 7:42 am

I know it’s a little late, but congratulations on your race Gina! I love your bucket list, and think you’ll really enjoy paddleboarding. I tried it for the first time last summer and it was so much fun! Took me a little while to get my balance but the boards are big and I’m sure the yogi in you will have no problem. I just started growing a patio garden with a bunch of herbs and greens, so one of my bucket list items is to keep all of that alive and growing!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:06 am

good luck with the plants! and thank you!
i’m excited to give it a whirl 🙂

  30. olivia on June 3, 2014 at 7:45 am

how fun I have always wanted to try paddleboarding!!!
! just finished my summer bucket list #1 and drove the pacific coast highway… so beautiful!

  31. Meg K on June 3, 2014 at 8:17 am

what a great list! congrats on your half PR! so very exciting 🙂 where did you decide to do your yoga TT? I commented before about CorePower’s – I’m in the 2nd stage of the training now and have really enjoyed it. if you chose CPY let me know if i can help at all!!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:06 am

that’s awesome. i was initially thinking of doing it through core power yoga, but found another studio that i think is a better fit for me

  32. Amy on June 3, 2014 at 8:51 am

this is a great idea! I need to sit down and figure our list out for the summer!

  33. Carly on June 3, 2014 at 8:55 am

Fun list! Congrats on your PR! My summer bucket list:

    – First race! (10K – part road, part trail…I’m pumped)
    – Exploring Nova Scotia and PEI and eating as much fresh seafood as I possibly can in my 10 day vacay (mmm fish tacos…)
    – Go to at least one group fitness class a week (body pump/spin/shred/cxworx) – I love them and never make time for them
    – Meal plan! and make snacks weekly (lame entry in the bucket list, but planning makes me happy)
    – Make beer at home! We have a kit that hasn’t been used yet – saving it for the summer!

And the overall goal of enjoying every moment instead of waiting and wishing for tomorrow.

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:05 am

      sounds like an awesome list!
good luck with your first race and thanks for reminding me to try cx worx 🙂

      • Carly on June 5, 2014 at 9:20 am

thanks! cxworx is a goodie! quick and you work your full core. great to add after one of your HIIT workouts 😉

  34. Isela G. on June 3, 2014 at 9:02 am

If you want to try wine tasting a little closer you should head up just north of Santa Barbara to the Santa Ynez area. We’ve gone to several tours there, but one of my favorites was the Sideways tour where you visit wineries from the movie, go to the ostrich farm, and have dinner at The Hitching Post (all from the movie). Make sure you see the movie again before you go. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:04 am

that sounds wonderful! thank you for recommending!

  35. Elizabeth {Positively Healthy} on June 3, 2014 at 9:17 am

So exciting about the yoga training! It looks like you have a great bucket list! Mine includes a bunch of running, races, laying by the pool and just being chill!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:04 am

      that sounds glorious 🙂

  36. Stacy S on June 3, 2014 at 9:18 am

Congratulations on starting yoga teacher training! I need to make my summer bucket list too! What a great list you have!

  37. Hilary on June 3, 2014 at 9:33 am

Paddle Boarding is something I have been wanting to do forever! I really hope that you get to try it and hopefully you post a recap on if it is worth next time I am around an area that does it 🙂

  38. FitBritt@MyOwnBalance on June 3, 2014 at 10:07 am

Wine country is one of my favorite places! It’s so much fun. And you will love paddleboarding!

I’ve got a list for all 99 Days this summer (some of the things are really easy though!). I like to make the most out of the warmer months!

  39. Rhiannon @ Bound to be a Buckeye on June 3, 2014 at 10:37 am

You have a fantastic list! I’ve always wanted to find an outdoor movie night like in The Wedding Planner 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:02 am

      loooooove the wedding planner 🙂

  40. RachelG on June 3, 2014 at 10:41 am

I’m so happy for you for doing a yoga teacher training!! It will be difficult, you will probably have some bruises and sore bones, but speaking from my personal experience with it you will find it to be so incredibly life affirming and changing. I can’t believe the confidence and “free therapy” I found through each weekend. 🙂

Even though we don’t actually know each other, please reach out if you ever have questions about YTT!! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:02 am

thank you, friend i definitely will!

    • Katie on June 3, 2014 at 11:08 am

SO happy for you Gina, reach out to me too if you need! Rachel, you are SOOOO right! I feel the exact same way about YTT, as I just finished. The bruises and sore bones, haha! Yes! I know some studios offer a week intense 200 hour, some longer. I did a 3 month training, and I personally think going the longer route is best. I know the one week 200 hour some studios offer might seem great, but it is too rushed in my opinion. I feel like it is way too much info pushed into a week, and you really don’t get all the amazing benefits fully, doing it that way. Like Rachel said, it was like therapy every weekend! <3 Congrats to you Rachel!

      • RachelG on June 3, 2014 at 3:26 pm

OMG 200 hours in 1 week! That is pure insanity (and not in the sexy Shaun T way)! lol. My training was for the most part every other weekend, friday nights through sunday nights, and lasted about 6 months. I found that to be a great pace because I was able to digest all of the information thrown at me. About half of the people in my training didn’t think they would teach when we first started, and I want to say almost everyone teaches at least once a week now.

I think the bruises I got were mostly from the inversion weekend, specifically crow pose. The second you think, “holy crap I’m doing it!” is when you faceplant on the mat. 😉

        Congratulations, Katie!!

  41. Rebecca on June 3, 2014 at 11:08 am

You can rent SUP in Mission Bay for about $15 each. In my opinion, there’s no need to get a Groupon that includes instruction on the SUP because it’s pretty self-explanatory. You can save a lot of money by just renting the boards by themselves. I went last year in Mission Bay and it was lots of fun, and I didn’t even fall off my board once 🙂

I was in SD this past weekend and had a good new acai bowl – at b Superfood Vitality Bar/Beaming at Flower Hill near Carmel Valley. It was very good and had delicious cinnamon spiced granola. It was pricey though.

I guess my summer bucket list is to eat a lot of acai bowls… haha!

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 11:21 am

i’ll join you on that one! haha
awesome tip- maybe i’ll do it that way. i’m a huge chicken though so may need to go with a group the first time

      • Erin on June 3, 2014 at 7:42 pm

The first time I did SUP (or YOLO as its called in FL, don’t ask me why…) I did it with an instructor & I enjoyed the words of wisdom that they had. My fiance used to surf so he was a pro but it took me a minute to feel confortable. I have also done yoga on a paddleboard which was wonderful, unique & hilarious all at the same time. I fell into the water a couple times, haha.

        • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 7:59 pm

haha! i love that they call it YOLO. i’m positive i will fall… and scream… during paddle board yoga. but, i have to try it!

  42. Lauren @ Focused To Be Fit on June 3, 2014 at 12:47 pm

I just did a post with my Top 25 things to do this Summer. I can’t wait to start checking things off. I too have an outdoor concert, as well as, baseball games, rooftop bars and patio hopping, ice cream with sprinkles, boating, BBQ/Bonfire, putt-putt, and more! Can’t wait!

  43. Tracy on June 3, 2014 at 2:08 pm

Sounds like a fun list! And yoga teacher training….so excited for you and can’t wait to hear about your experience! It’s on my short-term bucket list.

  44. Erin on June 3, 2014 at 7:52 pm

What an great summer bucket list! I have to say, I love seeing all of your adventures in SD. Its one of the few places that I’ve always wanted to visit but never have. Reading your blog has convinced me that I NEED to live there lol

My bucket list is to learn to surf, spend time with family & friends, go to the beach as much as possible & explore a new place each week. While I love some aspects of FL, there’s a lot that I don’t love & plan on moving one day. My plan is to soak up as much of the beauty, nature & attractions while I’m here so I don’t miss out on anything! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on June 3, 2014 at 7:59 pm

haha i totally know the feeling! i thought that about italy and when we visited, it just confirmed the fact that i have to live there someday 🙂
that’s smart to enjoy it as much as possible knowing you’ll be living somewhere else eventually
      xoxo

  45. Pua on June 4, 2014 at 2:52 am

I love the idea of an outdoor movie night! It’s been so hot where we live… I knew I would miss the cool. 🙂 We once borrowed my FIL’s big screen projector and had a spooky movie night in our house. Since Friday the 13th is happening this month, that could be a fun idea!

My other items are to hike, beach bbqs, and hopefully take a mini vacay (even if it’s a stay-cation). I LOVE summer!

  46. Alicia on June 8, 2014 at 6:25 pm

I’m so excited to hear you are doing a 200 hr RYT cert. I’ve been slowly earning one through a program that fits with my work schedule (fun weekend trainings that i can turn into mini vacations across the country). I am doing it for the same reason, to deepen my practice.
