DIY brown sugar body scrub

Friends, we have a bit of a Sephora problem. While I’m pretty sure it’s the basis behind all things Sephora, I go in for new mascara and well, you know how it goes.

I shared some of my latest beauty faves here, but (collective sigh of relief) failed to mention the hundreds of other things that caught my eye haha. While I do enjoy picking up fun new skincare and beauty items, I also like to get inspiration for DIY skincare at home. This facial scrub has become one of my favorite things, and I was also scoping out the body polish. After checking out the ingredients, I knew it was something I could recreate at home, and the results were pretty glorious. This sweet and lightly scented scrub exfoliates and is also extremely moisturizing.

Best part?

It includes ingredients you may already have in your makeup cabinet or pantry.

Here’s the mix if you’d like to give it a try:

-1/4 cup liquid coconut oil

-1/4 cup Vitamin E (or jojoba oil)

-1 long strand of lemon zest

-24 drops each of two of your favorite essential oils (I used sweet orange and rose absolute, but some other oils that would be fantastic: lavender, sandalwood, geranium, rosemary and jasmine. Mix and match! If you’re pregnant, here is a list of essential oils to avoid + some helpful tips about using essential oils)

-1 cup brown sugar, lightly packed

In a small bowl, I mixed the Vitamin E and coconut oil and added the strand of zest. I covered it tightly and set it in fridge for the zest to infuse the oil for a few days and removed it. Next, I stirred in the brown sugar.

It’s now covered in the shower to use whenever I want to exfoliate (every few days or so). The sweet smell is fantastic and since the oils are absorbed into the skin, I usually don’t need lotion afterwards.

You are so good making your own body scrub! I am so lazy! I just end up buying something!

Oh my gosh, the Jerry Springer is too much. Hahaha. The scrub looks awesome! I love to make my own products because I know what goes into them. Sure, it is fun to go shopping at Sephora, but for a fraction of the price and probably better ingredients, I’ll be giving this a go!

I love that meme because I have a really big Sephora problem. It’s more of a problem for me now than it used to be because it’s right across the street from Pure Barre and I always have a few minutes to kill between work and my PB class. Lately it’s even more of a problem once I learned how much I love tarte products and Glam Glow masks. But this body scrub looks awesome! I made one that I call the “Creme Brûlée” body scrub (just using coconut sugar or brown sugar, coconut and olive oil). It makes my skin so soft! I bet the added Vitamin E would make it even better!

Glad to know I’m not alone in my Sephora problem!! Once I start searching around it’s hard to stop. Thanks for the DIY idea 🙂 I’ve made your bath bombs several times. They’re great!

I discovered the ease of DIY scrub when I was searching for an inexpensive xmas gift idea for a handful of my coworkers. I made something similar (a mix of raw and brown sugar, coconut oil and vanilla extract), and packed them in cute little mason jars I got at Hobby Lobby (way cheap). Everyone LOVED it and asked for the ingredients to recreate it.

DIY scrub is genius!! I want to look for that Vitamin E oil you used and give that a try in my next batch.

as a kid, i would actually just use straight up brown sugar 🙂 take a few extra packets or the raw turbinado sugar (probably from panera, haha) and just use 1 packet in the shower on my face! it actually worked great!

Thanks for sharing this! Body scrubs can be so expensive and I would rather make it at home and save some money!

the only thing I don’t have is essential oils but I have apricot oil so maybe if I do half coconut and half apricot, love this I swim 3 days a week so my skin gets dry from the pool so this will be great!

i bet this smells so good but be careful 24 drops is a ton for EOs! you’d be fine with half that amount + also, citrus oils tend to cause photosensitivity. i had a friend get a really nasty burn from just a dab of citrus oil on her skin!

i recently made a body scrub with peppermint + my french press grounds since they are coarser with olive oil. it smelled like an andes mint but i will NEVER do it again because it made my tub so slippery! i almost bit it a few times hahaha. i make my own face wash and moisturizer but i’m leaving the scrub to the pros 🙂

Sephora – That place I black out and spend all the money 😉

    Great recipe !

Oooh, DIY beauty things are so hit and miss for me, but scrubs are one of the ones that I can do successfully! My go-to is usually leftover coffee grounds and coconut oil. Super thick, super grainy, and makes me super smooth…like a salamander. 🙂 Your recipe probably smells a lot better, though!

Looks great! I usually keep a mixture of sugar and coconut oil in the shower- I will have to try some of your add-ins. I love how coconut oil makes me smell, and feel!

i’m making this! as i have all the ingredients already!!

Thank you for the scrub recipe! I once spent an embarrassing amount of money for a tiny tub of lemongrass scrub, only to realize I could have spent a fraction making it at home. I’m sure I’m the only one that’s ever done that 🙂

I love this…really simple ingredients and easy to put together. My lemon zest strand didn’t look as nice as yours…nor was it easy to get off the lemon. Easy suggestions that may have made yours easier? Thanks.

I am a SAHM of 4 children 18, 12, 10 & 6 and as you can imagine personal care items for 6 people is crazy expensive. I just recently found the DIY laundry detergent and thought I would give it a try. Which of course got my OCD brain a thinkin’ about all the other DIY products I could save $$$ money one. I want to make this, your orange honey body wash, the body butter, laundry detergent, fabric softener, shampoo & conditioner. Since I’ve never attempted any DIY things before I am of course intimidated. Which do you recommend I start with? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
