Leggo my….

Gluten-free waffle.

waffle (2)

Not Eggo- Vanโ€™s brandโ€ฆ and for the record, it tasted like sawdust haha.

Happy Monday, friends! Hope youโ€™re having a great start to your week <3

Catching up on the blogosphere?

Hereโ€™s what went down Halloweekend:

-I found out Iโ€™m officially gluten-intolerant and per docs orders, have to take it easy on the sugar :/

Dance Trance had a crazy awesome Dance in the Dark party ๐Ÿ™‚

me katy and jess

Lots of butternut squash lurve

It was a blasty of a weekend and Iโ€™m so excited to get through this half-week and leave for FOODBUZZ FESTIVAL! ๐Ÿ˜€ Canโ€™t wait to meet all of you who will be there. Iโ€™ll come bearing macaroons, too ๐Ÿ™‚

This morning, I got up early to hit the weights and a spin class before work. <3

For my workout, I did the second Bridal Bootcamp workout (how are you guys doing with the workouts??) minus the HIIT and took a spin class. The weights sesh was pretty ferosh and spin was a lot of fun ๐Ÿ™‚ Itโ€™s funny to work out at a gym and not actually work there- Iโ€™m always tempted to strike up conversation and give tips to people like I usually would, but am trying to keep to myself since Iโ€™m not training clients at the gym. I remember when I first started working out and was so annoyed when random people would try to help me, haha.

B-fast:

breakfast

Sad waffles with 2-ish tablespoons of almond butter, cacao nibs and peppermint tea seeped in almond milk and Stevia

Iโ€™m off to run a couple of errands and then do the work thang ๐Ÿ™‚

See ya later today with some shout outs and a medley of my favorite fall recipes!

xoxo,

Gina

Todayโ€™s workout jam: โ€œCosmic Loveโ€ Florence + The Machine (awesome for climbing)

I have Vans in the fridge and unless they are covered with nut butter, yogurt and chocolate chips, I can barely get them down!

  2. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete on November 1, 2010 at 10:32 am

I have tried those Van’s waffles — and yes they are awful! Blech. Way too dry.

  3. Erika @ Food.Fitness.Fun on November 1, 2010 at 10:37 am

I tried Van’s waffles and hated them. [Yuck!] Now I stick to good ol’ [Low Fat/Whole Wheat] Eggo. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Jo on November 1, 2010 at 10:39 am

Try Trader Joe’s gluten free waffles- they are so much better than Van’s, I promise!

  5. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on November 1, 2010 at 10:39 am

I’ve never tried Vans but thanks for the review, because I have though about it in the past!! Sorry to hear about the gluten intolerance, but I suppose it’s a heck of a lot easier now than a few years ago when there weren’t as many gluten free products on the shelves. I’m sure Whole Foods will have plenty of other options for you! ๐Ÿ˜€

  6. Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA on November 1, 2010 at 10:40 am

Ugh, I also had some sawdust-tasting waffles a couple of days ago. Such a let down! ๐Ÿ™

I was wondering, are you still working with that vegan bodybuilder??

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2010 at 10:41 am

haha no he lasted two days… he came into work eating buffalo wings and i knew it was all over

  7. Christin L. on November 1, 2010 at 10:43 am

I too share the opinion of those sad, sad waffles, lol! ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Michelle C on November 1, 2010 at 10:48 am

Oh no! I picked up some Van’s waffles this weekend! ๐Ÿ™ Haven’t tried them yet but now i’m scared too! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi Gina,

Love your site. Just wanted to let you know that Gluten is one of those things that you become intolerant of if you don’t eat it enough (much like dairy). You may have become intolerant because of the way you normally eat. Not a bad thing, just an FYI.

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2010 at 1:06 pm

i was wondering if that was possible- good to know!

  10. allison @ thesundayflog on November 1, 2010 at 11:03 am

i love kashi waffles!! never tried vans but i have heard only bad things

  11. caroline on November 1, 2010 at 11:42 am

where is the foodbuzz festival this year? If its in SF you have to come see me! ๐Ÿ™‚

  12. grocery goddess jen on November 1, 2010 at 11:45 am

I did week two of the boot camp on Friday morning and then today, love it! I’ve never done intervals any where other than the gym on a treadmill, or out running, but I like doing them in my living room!

Have a great time at foodbuzz…awesome!

  13. Jenna on November 1, 2010 at 12:22 pm

I find most commercially packaged gluten-free products are not worth the money, are made with ingredients we (myself/husband) are also intolerant to (soy and rice), or are over processed and unhealthy. The array of gluten-free substitutes can be intimidating at first. Although I donโ€™t use it anymore, as my husband does not tolerate sorghum flour, Bobโ€™s Red Mill GF All-Purpose Flour (sorghum, potato, tapioca, garbanzo, and fava based) is a good blend that in most cases can be substituted 1 to 1 for traditional wheat flour with the addition of a small amount of binder (typically xanthan gum).

  14. Lizzy on November 1, 2010 at 12:41 pm

How did you find out your were intolerant to gluten? Is that a test different from the one for Celiacs? I asked my doctor but she didn’t seem too sympathetic.

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2010 at 1:04 pm

saliva dna test from my homeopathic doc

      • Stephanie on November 1, 2010 at 1:42 pm

How would you go about finding a homeopathic doc? I’d LOVE to see one, but have NO idea where to look??

      • kathleen on November 1, 2010 at 2:47 pm

my husband stopped eating gluten 3 years ago. but now since he doesn’t eat gluten, he can’t be tested to see if he has celiac. i was looking into a dna test which can tell you if you have the genes that make it possible to ever develop celiac in the first place. but the dna test can’t tell you if you will ever develop celiac….

so i guess i am curious as to how they came to the conclusion that you are in fact gluten intolerant by looking at dna.

I’m so surprised to see everyone dislike Van’s GF waffles! They are my favorite! I’ve tried the GF Flax and the GF blueberry.. both are great!

    • Melissa on November 1, 2010 at 3:40 pm

I totally agree!! I eat Vans GF Blueberry waffles every morning! I cover them with cinnamon and drink black tea with almond milk.. sooo delicious!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Michelle on November 2, 2010 at 1:21 am

Lol, i love them too!! ๐Ÿ™‚ i like the flax ones cuz i feel like they’re pretty good for me, i always microwave frozen fruit with some honey to drizzle over the top ๐Ÿ˜‰

  16. Heather (Heather's Dish) on November 1, 2010 at 12:51 pm

i don’t really love frozen waffles no matter what brand they are…it’s either homemade or nothing for this girl! ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow on November 1, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Me + the Vans gluten free don’t mix all that well either. ๐Ÿ™‚ Unless I smother it in PB, pumpkin butter or something of the like!

  18. Allison @ Food for Healing on November 1, 2010 at 1:04 pm

i had good experiences with Van’s waffles, thats so disappointing!

jealous about not going to Foodbuzz *cry*

  19. Leanne @ Simplicitlee on November 1, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Pre-packaged gluten free food can be really hit & miss! I’m sure youll be able to cook up some great meals though… you’re quite the chef!

  20. Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun on November 1, 2010 at 1:25 pm

I don’t mind tips from others in the gym if they 1) aren’t a trainer trying to push themselves on me overly much. Or 2)act like I know nothing and should be groveling at their feet for more knowledge. If that attitude isn’t there I usually appreciate the conversation. I actually usually KNOW what they suggest, but wasn’t focusing as much and its a good reminder on form or something to make a move a bit more effective, etc.

Would you believe I live near SF and am not going…silly work travel that is forcing me to leave…well unless there is somsething Saturday I could partake in???

  22. rachael (peace, kale, and yoga) on November 1, 2010 at 1:50 pm

The buckwheat waffles from Nature’s Path are gluten free and much better than the van’s in my opinion.

  23. Mo on November 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm

I buy the Vans brand too – I believe the lite version? Not bad as long as you don’t toast them up too long – they can get chewy and not so good. But if topped with your nut butter of choice, they’re awesome. Heck, a shoe topped with almond butter would be good! Just got back from the doctor – messed up my left rotator cuff. Pain, tingling and strength loss at age 42 and I was nervous. Stroke, heart attack, MS crossed my mind . . . but I had a feeling it was shoulder related. We had a heck of a windstorm here and I hauled some big fallen willow branches out of the yard . . . that’ll teach me. Have a good day.

  24. ash on November 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm

๐Ÿ™‚ Maybe try the banana GF waffles from Trader Joes- really cheap and delicious!! If they aren’t available I like the buckwheat vans flavor- heated just right in the microwave-toasting makes them too dry to me- Good luck! The best GF waffles are really the homemade ones ๐Ÿ™‚ with chocolate of course!

  25. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on November 1, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Never tried Vans gluten-free waffles, but I’ve had a similar experience with store-bought gluten-free cookies! Sawdust. Blech. Hope you have good luck finding a tastier waffle!

I’d also love to hear how you found your homeopathic doc! I’m on the lookout for one here in Los Angeles, and don’t know where to start looking… I’m guessing none of them will be covered by my health insurance. ๐Ÿ™ But I’d be willing to pay for a visit every now and then!

So jealous that you get to go to Foodbuzz this weekend!

  26. Sarah on November 1, 2010 at 2:33 pm

I like the Van’s GF waffles with flax better than the original ones. Any of the Van’s are better than TJ’s or other brands though!

  27. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on November 1, 2010 at 2:44 pm

“Vanโ€™s brandโ€ฆ and for the record, it tasted like sawdust”– Great to know! I have seen them but never bought them. Duly noted.

I have lots to say about some of the comments I’m reading in the comment field here about gluten and being intolerant to it, and everyone has to do his or her own research and yes, there are varying opinions from traditional western medicine to homeopaths to naturopaths about it all, but I know you do all your own research so that’s good ๐Ÿ™‚

Can’t wait to see you!!!!! And you’re coming bearing macs, hmmmm….how will the rest of us compete? lol. I was thinking of bringing like a cute purse or bag or something to give to my “secret santa” person…since I have zero time to bake this week! Not sure what to do…

    ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Gloria on November 1, 2010 at 2:49 pm

Maybe you can make a big batch of homemade gluten free waffles and then freeze them so you don’t have to have that icky cardboard interfere with the glorious taste of almond butter ๐Ÿ™‚

I was going to recommend the ED&BV “gluten-be-gone” chocolate chip cookies to you. They are my favorite cookies EVER and because I have seen you like brown rice bread, I think you’ll like these. But then I remembered no sugar… sooo maybe wait til after you can bring a little maple syrup back into your life! (in moderation of course ;))

  29. Paige @Running Around Normal on November 1, 2010 at 2:57 pm

Aww, I actually like the Vans waffles:) What kind did you get?

    • Fitnessista on November 1, 2010 at 6:33 pm

      plain

  30. Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle on November 1, 2010 at 3:00 pm

I now know never to buy Vans!! haha I dont think I’d truly enjoy the taste of sawdust….dance trance looked so fun!!!!

  31. Teri [a foodie stays fit] on November 1, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I’ve never thought to steep tea right in milk! I always steep it in water and then add milk after the fact. I bet it’s awesome right in the milk. I know what’s on my agenda tonight: sugar cookie sleigh ride tea steep in almond milk!

See, this is just one reason I love your blog. I find all sorts of simple things that make eating so much tastier and fun (like the breakfast cookie!).

Have you heard about the connection Stevia has to fertility? I don’t know if you are TTC but figured I would warn you.

Looks like you’ll have to pull out your Belgian waffle iron!

  39. trailmomma on November 1, 2010 at 6:56 pm

I am gluten free and diagnosed celiac. It is hard to do but once you get the hang of it, it isn’t that bad.

Vans waffles are fine in my opinion but maybe because I’ve been eating them for so long.

I much prefer Food for Life’s English Muffins at Whole Foods. YUM. Also Trader Joes makes a great pancake although it is packaged so you get that pre-packaged stereo type with them.

My daughter was tested, via blood test and it was determined she has the gene for Celiac but then again, she had a 50/50 shot of having it. I didn’t develop symptoms until I was 25 so she could easily fall into the same problem.

Again, once you learn to live with it, it isn’t so bad. I am also a lactose intolerant and a vegetarian so I have to really plan things out when it comes to dining.

  40. Katie @ Up Fit Creek on November 1, 2010 at 7:15 pm

I have the very same Tinkerbell mug!

No me gusta the Vans waffles, either. Pretty much just grossness.

  41. Erinn on November 1, 2010 at 7:31 pm

I think Trader Joe’s gluten free waffles and pancakes are pretty good. Also, Udi’s bread (in the frozen specialty section at Whole Foods) is hand’s down the best GF bread I’ve ever had! You can actually make a sandwich out of it without toasting the bread, which is kind of a miracle.

  42. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin on November 1, 2010 at 7:32 pm

I’ve yet to find a brand of frozen waffles that I like! Nothing compares to homemade. ๐Ÿ˜€

  43. Lauren on November 1, 2010 at 8:47 pm

You know, I was just thinking about having my gluten levels checked because I really think I may suffer from this intolerance as well. I just don’t think I’m ready to admit it.

  44. Tamar on November 1, 2010 at 9:03 pm

I think I have a hard time processing sugar, too, and I’m trying to lay off the sweet stuff. Did your doc say that stevia is ok, or do you have to eat less of that too?

  45. Carolyn on November 1, 2010 at 9:07 pm

I agree with many of the other posters that you should give the Trader Joe’s ones a try. Much less expensive and I think the texture is better. The thing to remember is going gluten free takes effort and foods are not going to taste exactly the same. It’s a balancing act. I’ve found they taste better if I bake them in the oven rather than in the toaster. Also I’d suggest trying your protein pancake as a waffle, good!

  46. Molly on November 1, 2010 at 10:05 pm

I almost bought Vans waffles today, glad I didn’t. They do pose well for a picture though!

  47. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on November 1, 2010 at 10:55 pm

I don’t mind the Van’s waffles actually. There definitely not the homemade quality, but I’l take em.

  48. Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] on November 2, 2010 at 2:06 am

I love Van’s; though, thankfully I don’t have to eat the sawdust variety.

Where do you buy your cacao nibs!?

  49. CaSaundra on November 2, 2010 at 8:01 am

I used to eat Eggo Waffles all the time as a kid–I liked the mini cinnamon ones!

  50. Morgan on July 26, 2012 at 3:22 pm

    Gina!
I just discovered Trader Joe’s gluten free waffles!!!
    They taste like Eggo’s!
