Drum Fear
Hi friends! How are you? Hope you had a lovely day <3 It was fun to read about your most-used and most neglected kitchen items.. and that the Pilot isn’t the only guy who has their things randomly disappear 😉
Just got home from work- it was a longie today.
Also, I was on the board to teach that drum class I told you about. [Everyday we go into work we could end up teaching anything, so we have to be prepared for anything]
Of all of the classes we offer, drums is the one class that isn’t for me. The clicking gives me a wicked headache and something about bending over to hit the ball makes my bun-in-the-oven belly feel weird.
My boss gave me the heads up yesterday that it might happen, so I made a playlist last night, but was struck with hardcore anxiety. All morning, I kept thinking to myself “what if I have to teach drums today?!” and then when I saw it on the board, I knew I’d be worried and dreading it all day.
And then….
I saw that one of my friends, who loves drumming, was looking for a 3pm class, since she had a private lesson that hadn’t been booked. I donated the drum class to her.
On one hand, I feel like a giant chicken wuss for not standing up to my fear and conquering it. But on the other hand, I feel like asking my friend to switch was a good idea, since it was really stressing me out. Have you ever been in a similar situation?
I already decided that if I’m ever on the board for drums again, I’ll teach it.
Drum fear is no joke, my friends. A good surprise was that I ended up teaching Zumba (Saturday is usually my day), so that made up for the anxiety and stress 😉
Some eats!
Lunch was 2 pieces of brown rice toast with hummus, salad with Greek Style Quinoa on top and balsamic
Snacks: 2 steamed eggs (ate 1 yolk and 1 white), half a banana and almond butter (it’s just easier to take the whole jar)
After-work smoothie:
-1 cup almond milk
-1 C frozen organic cherries
-1 scoop vanilla Sun Warrior
-1 T cacao powder
The Pilot just got home, so I’m thinking we’ll hang out. I like him 😉 Bella needs a walk, too.
See ya in the morning!
xoxo
Gina
Honestly if you were that stressed out, then you did the right thing. I’m all for facing your fears, but sometimes it just isn’t worth it. Seems like it worked out well for your friend too, so it was a win-win!
That post stressed me out. lol I’m glad you did that. Maybe once you’re all move in and your little boy is here, you can work on that fear.
The drum class just looks a bit odd…I don’t think you are really supposed to hit those balls!
HAHAHA. It might be a good arm and finger workout? 😛
Yeah I watched that whole thing and felt my face like D: when it was over lol
Wow, that is quite an interesting class Gina! Good thing you did pass b/c you and baby have to be in peace, tranquility, and all that good stuff 😀
I agree with Holly. It would be one thing if you avoided all exercise because it stressed you out. But you’re the Fitnessista — working out and being cool is what you do! 😉 With that said, not all forms of exercise are for everyone. While I do think it’s important to face your fears and that whole shebang, some things just aren’t worth it. Swimming freaks me out, so I don’t do it. It is what it is. =)
When I first became a Jazzercise instructor, I used to get really nervous to teach on the weekends. They were our busiest classes and were always packed and during my first couple months of teaching I would trade with someone if I was scheduled for a weekend. I have been teaching for over 4 years now, and I still get little butterflies in my stomach when I teach a weekend class…but now I don’t trade them away…I LOVE the big classes because they are so much more fun! 😀
i live for big zumba classes 🙂
That class looks so weird! I can see why you wouldn’t want to teach it! Doesn’t seem like that great of a workout either…..but I guess its unique?
i think that’s why people at the resort love it so much- it’s different
I couldn’t help but laugh at that video! I’ve never even heard of drumming before… definitely not for me, either!
Haha, I probably would have wimped out too. It just seems like a weird class. I look forward to the “conquering your fear” post next time you have to teach it!
my gym used to have a drumming class….it wasn’t for me either…and apparently not for most women at the gym because they canceled it after two months.
Hi Fitnessista! I’ve been reading your blog for a while and you’ve turned into kind of an inspiration for me. I enjoy reading your daily posts! I think we have the same sunglasses! are they Ralph? I’m tempted to start a blog, just have to bite the bullet and try it!! Can’t hurt!
thank you! 🙂
nope, they’re from loft
We all have our “specialties,” and I think it’s totally okay that you don’t want to/don’t like teaching the drum class. Of course, if it’s something that might have to happen, it probably will be better once you teach it and get your own groove going with it. I teach pilates classes (on the reformer) and there definitely some I like more than others. I know EXACTLY what you mean.
Wowza, your photos are looking muy bueno 😉
Don’t worry about wimping out of the class– we all have our weak moments sometimes. I can’t promise that I would have done the class either.. haha
thanks! it’s nice to have natural light here 🙂
Oh my….I don’t blame you, that class looks scary 🙂
Hmm I am not sure drum class would be for me either!
naw, nothing wrong with taking a rain check on the drums class. Maybe by next time you’re up, you’ll feel better about, be excited to tackle the class – and the end result would probably be better for all. A fun challenge for you and an excited teacher for the class.
Another day, another adventure!
I get the whole ‘feeling the fear and doing it anyway thing,’ but I think what trumps that is the idea that if something doesn’t resonate with you personally, its not going to shine to your students when you teach it. You probably know from teaching Zumba that when you’re digging it, your students feed off that vibe and get jazzed about Zumba-ing with you. I think its good to diversify but if you know in your soul that a certain type of fitness class doesn’t jive with you, then there’s no sense in going against your gut feeling and trying to make it happen. 🙂
thats the dumbest thing i have ever seen. enough. said. lol.
This.
Loving the looks of that Greek style quinoa!
Uhhhh what the?????
First of all! YOU arent supposed to be in a stressful situation so no more stress for YOU! 😉 Give that baby some peace and relaxation.
Secondly… Struggle Muffins is right…if you arent digging it then your audience wont either and from my opinion I think the drumming class is strange.
Thirdly…where’s the other half of the banana?? Hmmmm?? Did Bella get a banana treat today? I was going to have half a banana but I never know what to do with the other half. ;(
That seems like a weird class, haha. Hope you had fun with the hubs!
OHHHH MY! I have NEVER seen a class like that before! And I can definitely see how it gives you a headache and anxiety! Glad you got to spend some time with the Pilot and have your Saturday Zumba!
Oh my gosh – I just watched a few minutes of that drums video and couldn’t stop laughing! I know that different classes are perfect for different people, but I wouldn’t last a minute in that drums class! I had a gym teacher in elementary school who used to have us beat actual tribal drums from Africa.. it was fun at age 10, but even then I couldn’t really get into it.. I spent the whole class laughing with my friends. Is it supposed to be a fun workout or do some people take it really seriously?
I cringed when I watched that. It gave me a headache after about a minute or two. I think that is one I would definitely have to pass on!
i’m hoping to do a zumba class this saturday morning since my bf wont be around to do our usual thang.
that drum class sounds very interesting, i don’t think its my kind of thing tho!
I have finally hopped back on the smoothie train, and i am loving it.
You just need to get the opensky people to ship to canada so i can get in on the sun warrior deals!
I think facing fears are healthy….for everyone else! 😉 I have this really stupid fear….of olives. I hate them… the way the taste…and the way the pimento stuffed ones look like wicked floating eyeballs…
Anyways, my boyfriend made me eat one several months ago. It didn’t fix it AT ALL (but reminded me how much I despise their briney-ness and icky texture)!
There IS a point – there comes a time when we need to test ourselves and sometimes pushing that comfort limit helps. It may not make you like it; you may still get a headache and anxiety… but at least you’ll get some reprieve from feeling like you can’t face it.
And who knows, maybe you’ll actually enjoy it! (I know that’s a horrible analogy, but I figured maybe you’d at least get a good laugh at my expense!)
SOrry about the drums anxiety– glad you faced your fear and got through it! 🙂
Yummy, and delicious looking eats. I lurveeeee chocolate- cherry smoothies. Especially with almond and coconut addition, too 🙂
Oooo my, I would have gotten a wicked noggin ache too!!!
I hope you rest your baby bump and get it back to feeling 100% satisfied 🙂
Have a great night!
xxoo
I do not think you should ever feel badly about not doing something that you really dislike, esspecially when it worked out well for you AND for the person you donated the class to. Some things just aren’t worth it, you know? I am for shiz sending my mom the link for your Greek style quinoa, she will be all over that. You are awesome!
I coach gymnastics and I know how stressful it can be getting thrown on classes that you don’t like/feel experienced enough in. I’m one of those people who have to have like everything that I’m doing planned to the Q. Planner woman hardcore right here. It’s one of those things where we truly just have to roll with the flow =/
ohemgee, i’d be just as freaked out to teach that class! i’ve never seen it before but it’s… different!
DEFINITELY do it next time it comes up. you’ll learn so much and grow from it, i’m sure!
How do you steam an egg?!
I had a similar situation just last week! I’m a vet and it was my surgery day at work and a 100+ pound lab came in for a spay (for the record, spaying a giant dog is a challenging surgery). I already had a few other procedures going on and I knew I could technically handle the spay but that it would stress me out on such a busy surgery day. My coworker was around and he loves doing surgery and didn’t have any other appointments so I let him have it. Initially I felt like it was a cop out but then I realized it was better for me to let him handle the surgery (FYI he ended up saying it was one of the toughest spays he’d ever done and he’s had over 20 years of experience). If it had been my only surgery for the day I would have tackled it but in the end I realized it was better for me to stay relaxed so I could focus on my other patients. So don’t worry, we’ve all been there!
Um I just got anxiety about the drums class and we don’t have drum classes! If you do it I wanna read a play by play!
I think there’s a time and place to confront our “fears”, like when I put my camera on Manual Mode and DID NOT TAKE IT OFF the entire time I was in Boulder. I now feel like I can shoot manual and it’s not a hope and a prayer; it’s solid. That was bellying up to my fear.
On the other hand, I don’t want to confront my fear of snakes. And I wouldnt have taught drums either. Plus, you are pregnant and if Baby is telling you, no mom, the drums make me anxious in your belly and I am doing flips and freaking out and your adrenaline surge in your bloodstream is also making me feel YOUR stress…then, no. No way would I teach. I would gladly hand it off.
A time and a place to confront; and a time and a place to accept where we’re at in life and that’s ok too 🙂
I’m initiated by teaching a drum class’s too!!!
I think it really says a lot about you that there’s only one class that makes you anxious! You obviously are very talented at what you do, and it seems completely natural to me that you would have some non-faves to teach and also something that you don’t want to do! I’d never be able to do your job because I’d probably only have one type of class that I did enjoy, and I’d have anxiety about the rest!
That being said…I bet you can find a groove in drum class, and make it work for you so that it doesn’t cause anxiety. Think of it as just one more diverse way to teach your little love to have and enjoy rhythm 🙂
Haha that class is so bizarre! It doesn’t look like my cup of tea either. I think there’s a difference between a fear of something and disliking something… and if you really actually dislike something, I think it’s ok to not do it. Or maybe that’s just what I tell myself to make me feel better about being scared of doing classes like Body Combat and Body Attack. 😛
Yeah, I don’t think I’d like the drum class either. Nothing about that video looked fun to me, haha. NOW, although I’ve never taken a zumba class, it looks like a blast! Glad you got to do that instead!! 😀
Sometimes you just have to listen to yourself. I think you did the right thing. Also I wanted to say that I re-made the protein pancakes and this time just added a splash of almond milk and it worked much better! I think the protein powder I use makes things more wet. Like when I add it to oatmeal my oatmeal gets watery so it must be the protein. (I use Rainblow Light Whey that is soy-free and sugar-free and has probiotics to help with digestion) Anyway….the recipe was great! Thanks!!
Totally agree. Especially if the sensation makes you feel uncomfortable and sick (while pregnant), maybe you should listen to that signal and just say no!
I think it’s totally okay to back out of something that gives you anxiety – if I do, I find that usually I’m more prepared the next time the chance comes around to do it! Some things just take a little while to get your feet wet 🙂
I hear ya girl on the ‘wussing out’, not that i think you wussed out or anything. I can totally relate to the ‘fear’ and then being bummed i didn’t conquer it. BUT, you will have another chance, so go for it, and i bet you will be relieved at how easy it was. I do this all the time with work projects when i need to step up to the plate – after i do i feel so empowered!
Random thought, but for for some reason i cannot find frozen cherries any more…your smoothie reminded me how much i miss my choc cherry smoothie…so strange i was wondering if there was a frozen cherry shortage? I live in Boston so ya would think we wouldn’t be affected…i almost froze my own the other day:=
LOL i couldn’t even get through that whole video…i wouldn’t want to teach it either!!
I definitely would have done the same thing! Hopefully next time, since you’ve already dealt with some of the stress of it, it won’t be as bad. I’m not so sure I’d be into the drum thing either!
I’d get back my pre-mommy abs from all the cracking up I’d be doing!!!
Where do you get those reusable straws? And are they plastic or glass?
they’re glass- glass dharma makes them
Ummm….Wow. That class gives me anxiety just looking at the video! Haha. Very strange indeed! Haha
I definitely don’t blame you for not wanting to teach it…just thinking about being a student taking that class gives me anxiety alone…very strange indeed, I have never seen that before.
Sometimes we just have to go with what our instincts our telling us and in the end it will all work out…like how you were able to teach Zumba in the end! Life’s too short to do something you don’t’ want to do…and now’s not the time for you and baby to be stressed 🙂
I had an “I don’t wanna” moment last night at my bf’s coworker’s house warming. They were a serious darts playing bunch and I had never (ever) thrown one in my life (and I possess miniscule hand eye coordination). I didn’t know these people well and they divided (without my consent) random teams of two and placed me with a guy who brought his own set of darts! I was seriously freaking out that I would destroy their new walls or floors or look really silly. But, I held off the urge to excuse myself from looking clueless and had a surprisingly decent time. And yes, I actually managed to throw a dart that stuck into their hardwoods. Oops.
I won’t lie, I think that class looks a bit bizarre. I can kinda understand why you didn’t want to teach it, even if your reasons were more legit than mine, lol. 🙂
Where did you get that clear cup&straw that you drink your smoothies out of??
Cup is regular glass from target, the straws are by glass dharma
