Dreamy dinner + August Weights Workout

Hey hey! It’s FRIDAY <3 So glad the weekend is finally here! Thank you so much for making me feel better about my drum fear 🙂 It’s nice to know that many of you would have done the same thing.

I think I’ve finally gotten the hang of using our new kitchen 😀

dinner

Dinner last night was… dreamy 🙂

All of my favorite things:

Salmon, seasoned with pepper, garlic, Nama Shoyu and brown sugar, pan-seared and baked

salmon

[Trader Joe’s has AMAZING fresh salmon- it looked so good… I just wanted to take it out out the package, cover it in wasabi and eat it]

Twice-baked sweet potatoes – have been SO excited to try these, and then did not disappoint

We saved Miss Bell some plain baked sweet potato.. she loves her veggies 😉

sweet potato

and zucchini, sautéed in olive oil until borderline burned (just how we like it)

dinner2

It was a lovely meal 🙂

This morning, I slept in a little since my body is drained from yesterday –feel much better now- and am about to take Bell for a little walk before getting started on ninja-kicking the day’s to-dos.

See ya later today with a Fashion post on jeans 🙂

xoxo

Something to do:

August Weights Workout!!

Is pumping iron more often one of your August goals? Try adding this weights workout into your routine. It’s full-body, so make sure to complete it on non-consecutive days. Choose a weight that’s challenging for you- if you can do more than 12 reps of an exercise easily, it may be time to bump it up.

As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes and honor your body and injuries- if it hurts, don’t do it!

1) Warm-up, cardio of choice 5-7 minutes (start with low intensity, bring it up to moderate)

2) Dumbbell lunge to overhead press (3 sets of 10 on each side)

3) Sumo squat and leg raise (3 sets of 10 on each side)

4) Jump squats – 30 seconds

5) Assisted pull-up (3 sets of 12)

6) Bench push up (3 sets of 12)

7) 1-arm pronated tricep extension (3 sets of 10 on each side)

8) Bench step up – 30 seconds each leg

9) Double crunch – 25

10) Superman – 1 minute

11) Cool down and stretch 🙂

If you try it, please let me know what you think <3 Happy training!

Looks like an awesome workout Gina! Sumo squats are one of my favourite lower body exercises right now, especially with a kettlebell. I hope you have a lovely Friday!

This may be a stupid question, but should I do this same workout twice a week, even though they are working the same muscle groups, or should I pair it with another full body workout that works the same areas but in different ways?

    Thank you!

    • Fitnessista on August 5, 2011 at 11:48 am

you can do it either way! for simplicity, it can be done twice a week and still get amazing results (because of the new combo of moves and exercises), or it you want to switch it up and do different exercises for the second weight sesh of the week, that works too

  12. gretchen on August 5, 2011 at 12:16 pm

Silly question….is this workout designed to be done circuit style, going through the full routine once then repeating twice? Or do you just go in order and do the same exercises for the # of sets listed? It looks pike an awesome workout, and I’m excited to give it a try!

  13. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on August 5, 2011 at 12:19 pm

What a great weights workout! That’s awesome you’re getting in all that great salmon…I’m sure you know this but I’ve read that salmon is one of the best sources for the baby’s brain development and nervous tissues 🙂

  15. Hillary on August 5, 2011 at 12:23 pm

Your dinner consisted of all of my favorite things. Now I have a hankering for salmon!

Thanks for posting the weights workout too—I’ve been REALLY bored with my weights routine lately, so maybe this will switch it up a little!

  16. chelsea on August 5, 2011 at 12:26 pm

Since I’m a vegetarian I can’t eat the salmon but oh my everything else in this meal looks SOOOO yummy! =D I love cooking my zuchinni in a little olive oil and balsamic. It’s a trick I learned from my mom and it never fails me lol <3

Salmon and sweet potatoes are my favorite things ever. I planned on making salmon since I have it on hand, but the twice baked sweet potatoes look good enough for me to run back to the store! I ran out two days ago…boo!

  20. Shannon on August 5, 2011 at 12:54 pm

Hi Gina…great workout!! I’ve been hearing a lot about the benefits of coconut oil for both overall health and fat burning. I’d love to hear your general thoughts on it. 🙂

We’re getting used to a new kitchen too…funny how you kind of have to “learn” your kitchen when you move in! 🙂

  28. Dynamics on August 5, 2011 at 1:52 pm

I just discovered I can dehydrate sweet potatoes for the puppy. For those who buy those rawhide bones, this is a great alternative. The dogs love them!! I filled the dehydrator for a buck 44 versus a 6oz bag from the pet store that costs 6 bucks.

    • Fitnessista on August 5, 2011 at 7:15 pm

bella loves those! thanks for reminding me 🙂

  29. Stefanie @TheNewHealthy on August 5, 2011 at 2:06 pm

That dinner looks amazing! Love salmon.

  32. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on August 5, 2011 at 3:52 pm

The marinade for the salmon looks great, Gina. Brown sugar probably helped it caramelize..nice! That’s good to know about TJ’s having good fresh fish. Honestly, I have never looked or tried it but that’s a good tidbit. I bought the Thanksgiving turkey I made for Scott last year from them and he said it was the best turkey he ever had.

Have a great Friday and weekend!

Superman is one of my favourite spine strengthening poses ever, we do it all the time in yoga and it is intense. the yoga to the people podcasts make my heartrate shoot through the roof when they lead you through long holds of this pose. phew! 🙂 mmm…your meal looks absolutely incredible…I wish I had that for dinner…may have to remedy the situation shortly, lol! 😉 xyx

My favorite part of this whole post is that your number 8 turned into a smiley face with sunglasses on. I was confused by this for a while thinking you thought that this move was somehow cooler than the other moves. Then I realized that 8 ) is the shortcut for that face….

Love this workout, can’t wait to do it!!

    • Fitnessista on August 5, 2011 at 11:08 pm

wow- i didn’t even notice that!
let me know if you try it 🙂

Can you suggest an at home substitution for the assisted pull-up? TIA

    • Hannah on August 8, 2011 at 1:13 pm

Yes, I would also like a substitution for the assisted pull-up. My gym doesn’t have that machine! Thanks 🙂

Tried it today with a coworker over lunch. Love! 😀
