The famous turkey burger recipe
As I mentioned last week, Wednesdays have become crock pot night at our house.
Or hot bar night?
Yes, that too.
The Pilot has his Master’s class Wednesday night (via webcam correspondence), and I work during the day, so dinner is fast and furious. Yesterday I decided that if I can’t get it in the slow cooker on my lunch break, how about hot bar all around? Madre, Liv and I had a wonderful dinner together, and then I brought the Pilot some food home to sneak into the office during his class.
Last night was also the night that Caro opened the pantry while I was upstairs putting Livi to sleep, dragged out the bag of Snap Crisps and was quickly found, happily munching away with her head in the bag.
It was also my first viewing ever of Downton Abbey (free on Amazon Prime!). Also known as “35 minutes of life that I’ll never get back.” I was excited to see it after all of the hype that’s going around, but got absolutely nothing out of it. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, and even with the beautiful cinematography and costumes, I just wasn’t into it.
I’d love to watch a show with a little substance (time is limited around here and when I do watch TV, it’s the occasional Elmo variety), but besides Girls, there’s nothing I’m really crazy about right now.
And on the random theme of this post, I have to tell you what happened at the gym recently: a woman unplugged the StairMaster while I was on it, doing intervals (FAST), reading a magazine and listening to musicโฆ aka not paying attention to potential StarMaster un-pluggers. She was apparently using a fan that she had plugged in for her workout, went to unplug and totally chose my machine instead of said fan. The machine STOPPED while I was sprinting up, and I grasped onto the handrails, totally saving myself from faceplanting onto the revolving stairs of death.
I pushed some buttons on the machine, trying to figure out what the heck happened, and looked down to see her. She cheerily said, “I plugged it back in!” and even though I wanted to throw my O magazine at her (which ironically, was on the topic of relaxation), I took a deep breath and said, “no worries, I was finished anyway.” I’ve been keeping this quote in the back of my mind lately, and really endeavoring to be kind, even when sometimes.. I don’t feel like it. Sometimes people are rude, say nasty things, unplug your machine in the middle of a great cardio workout, and you just have to roll with it.

With my profound words of the day (haha), I’m off to teach some Buff Booty.
Hope you have a very happy, and kindness-filled almost-Friday.

A few people asked for the Pilot’s amazing turkey burger recipe, so I asked him for the details:
He seasons the ground turkey with salt, pepper, garlic powder, then adds a splash of soy sauce, lots of chopped jalapeรฑos and a small drizzle of maple syrup. He forms the meat into patties and grills for 6-8 min on one side, flips and then 4-5 min on the other side.
Winter Shape Up friends:ย Leave a comment to check in for today’s workout!ย Today is HIIT and Steady– one of my all-time faves. How did it go? What cardio did you choose? Who’s STOKED for next week’s workout?! I had a feeling this was going to be the best Winter Shape Up yet and love the way it’s going so far, especially the check-ins and amazing sense of community you’ve all created. Keep up the great work!
Congrats to the Physique 57 giveaway winner:
Jeannie, who said,
“Hi Gina โ I did workout 1 today + tempo. I increased my weights from Monday. Monday I went lighter since I wasnโt sure what to expect but today I gave it my all and it felt great. Tempo on treadmill.
Love all the motivation on the check ins and the great prizes so far.”
Congrats!! Send me your info: fitnessista @ gmail dot com and I’ll forward it along to the P57 fairy.
Stay tuned for your next giveaway! ๐
The weekly workout left me feeling sore the first time around, so after yesterday’s workout plus tempo work, I figured I could use a rest day today. I plan on doing my HIIT plus steady cardio tomorrow.
I’ve been at a sales conference all week. Finally got to do Workout#1 with a HIIT…kicked my booty this morning!
There is a Whole Foods opening soon right near my office and right accross the street from my gym – I am so excited! I really hope they have a hot bar.
Just finished my cardio on my lunch break and was feeling great, till I ran into my most senior client, all sweaty and disheveled looking. Oh well, at least he was impressed that I worked out on my lunch break.
I love the texts. Too funny!
Breaking Bad or Homeland are two really great, more “cerebral” shows that we’re into.
Glad to know my husband and I aren’t the only ones who text each other like we are from the middle ages! <3
Today’s was HARD after yesterday’s workout! Definitely feel it in my legs. Definitely feel like I earned tomorrow’s off day!
Your text exchange with the pilot made me <3 you a little more ๐ So cute that Caro feels comfortable enought to help herself to snacks now. LOL
I absolutely adore Downton Abbey! I will admit, the first episode was super boring, but I just finished season 2 and am completely addicted!!! It gets really good and there are some more twists and turns. If you have a chance and feel like giving it a second shot, you won’t regret it! ๐
I’m a day behind on the WSU (switched some days around) so today was workout 1+tempo run. I felt awesome when I finished and can already tell I’m going to be sore tomorrow ๐
I switched yesterday with today, so I did another repeat of workout #1 and then 15 tempo minutes. After 3 rounds of work out one my whole body was shaking- I especially love the core soreness!
The Stair Master lady…is she for real? Really? Props to you for keeping your cool!!!!!
Oh. My. Stars. That picture of Caroline is beyond cute. She’s like Moi??? (What can you do, those are addictive…)
Starting my workout in 10 minutes – commenting is keeping me honest! Wish me luck!
Oh thanks for the Downton Abbey recap. My grandmother was telling me all about it for a good hour and I was thinking about checking it out. She can be hit or miss. ๐
You should still check it out. It’s actually very good!
Agreed with Heather! I think it’s actually my favorite TV show of all time. ๐
I’ll third that sentiment – definitely my one of my top three shows!
First of all, your texts are adorable. Secondly, love that gym story- been there, and I think it’s great you were able to stay nice about it. Being kind even when it’s tough is most important (or at least so says my madre). ๐
i like that quote. i know i do that sometimes. I couldn’t imagine someone unplugging the machine I was on, i would have died! you’ve got some pretty quick reflexes forsure
Wowzers…she could of at least apologized instead of acting like it was no big deal…sheesh! Glad you were able to keep cool about the situation.
Suits is a great show if you need one
I am finishing up at work (totally not checking the internet ;)) and forcing myself to head upstairs to the office gym in a few minutes. I can do it! Today’s agenda includes my second session of workout 1 and HIIT. I plan to do tabata intervals on the treadmill for the HIIT (having an office gym is so, so nice, but the equipment is limited. so i’ll sprint 20 seconds, hop my feet on the sides of the treadmill for 10, etc). here we go!
Did my HIIT and Steady a few hours ago, and I’m definitely ready for the off day tomorrow. Whew! I’m sore, but loving week 1! ๐
Not gonna lie, I’m a little sore today so I switched and took today off, cardio tomorrow. I always need a good shakeout of the legs after flying and we’re off to VA tomorrow so it works out well.
I love the text convo with the pilot! It’s so fun (and important!) to be silly after however many years together!
So glad to see someone else feels the same way I do about Downton! ๐
I think you need to stick with Downton Abbey a little longer.
i was super sore from yesterday, and almost skipped the gym and planned to go tomorrow instead. but then I knew friday happy hour would be calling to me tomorrow and i’d skip again….so i went. glad i did! decided to do my hiit+steady on the upright bike. not a staple in my workouts, but i’ve been pounding the knees on the dreadmill/pavement a lot lately so thought i’d go a less knee-straining route. lovin’ wsu so far! thanks again for the great workouts.
Did my Hiit+Steady on the treadmill, and was SUPER sweaty afterward! Loved it ๐
Downton Abbey is really good but unfortunately does take a few episodes to get into. Give it another try!
I’m all for “different people like different things,” but Downton Abbey has lots of substance, unlike those terrible “The Housewives of (insert city name here)” and any of the Kardashian related shows. Oye. Why that garbage is even on TV I don’t understand.
I will concur that Breaking Bad is certainly more cerebral though!
you can tell it has substance, i just found it to be a snooze. i’ll give it another try for sure
I watched the first two episodes during my 23 hour stint sitting alone in Newark Airport so understandably I wouldn’t have found it as boring since I had literally nothing else to entertain me. It really does get more interesting though. But if you’re not into period pieces you’ll probably never get into it, I’m pretty sure I should have been born in the 1800’s in England. Though the whole bathroom situation would have left a lot to be desired ๐
I just finished my cardio and HIIT, about 10 min in a spider started dropping from the ceiling until it was right above my elliptical!…I got rid of him in a jiff though!
It took me three episodes to get hooked on Downton Abbey, but now it’s one of my favorites!
HIIT and Steady done! Treadmill style.
It took me a couple of episodes to get into Downton Abbey, but I’m glad that I stuck with it. It’s a really well written show. Maybe give another episode a try? Same thing happened with Game of Thrones…my husband and I watched the first episode and we were not impressed. We kept watching and it turned out to be one of my favorite series; absolutely brilliant.
a lot of people have said that. if i get some free night time, i’ll give it another whirl
Haha, you should put a picture of Caro on dogshaming! That site makes me ever so grateful for my non destructive, relatively angelic dog ๐
hahah next time! (and i’m sure there will be a next time)
I LOVE HIIT! ran on the treadmill and was a sweaty mess after…i can’t wait to finish the week strong and am dying for next week’s workout!
I did 20 minutes of HIIT and then 20 minutes on the bike. I’m loving the Winter Shape Up so far. It’s my first time and I’m having so much fun!
I’m curious as to what you think a show with “substance” would be if you disliked Downton so much.
i didn’t dislike it for lack of substance; i disliked it because it was terribly boring
i was hoping i would love it
I did today’s workout! Even after not doing Workout 1 yesterday (sickness), I could feel some tightness in my muscles while I did today’s cardio. I must have worked hard on Monday! I loved Workout 1 and I can’t wait to see what next week’s looks like!
Ohhh man, way to go keeping your cool with that lady. I hope I would have done the same!
Thanks for the recipe, El Piloto! Quick question – are the jalapenos the fresh kind or jarred pickled kind? BTW y’alls text exchange is epic. Hope the feast brought some merriment to the melancholy chamber. ๐
pickled! ๐
and yes, merriment twas had by all who feasted upon whole paycheck delights
That could have been so bad on the stair master! Glad you didn’t get hurt and kept your cool!
I can’t believe somebody unplugged your stair master…..wtf.
Love the texts! I’ve never watched Downtown Abbey, but the storyline doesn’t really interest me so I probably will never start. But I guess never say never- right?
I’m a BIG fan of Scandal! If you’re into shows that include some politics (the president, etc), it’s awesome! Has a bit of substance ๐
Omg you were definitely kinder than necessary! That is such a good quote, and one I’ll definitely strive to remember! Thanks!
Hey Gina-
What level do you do when you do stairmaster? And do you ever do stairs outside like in a stadium? I used to do these all the time and need to find more ways to work them back into my workouts!
Can’t wait to try the turkey burger recipe! I laughed out loud at your text. Haven’t been able to do much cardio besides tabata because we are still on vaca. So looking forward to next weeks workouts!
So in my usual “I’m way behind on things” fashion, I wanted to thank you for the chocolate PB amazeballs. They were amazing!! Of course the balls never materialized because my 4 year old and I ate all the batter our of the blender with spoons while dooling and umming the whole time. I am making another batch to take to work–in balls–one the kids are in bed. The recipe reminded my of a healthier no bake cookie recipe! YUM!! Thank you from me and my daughter!!
Oh–I love the workouts!! I am not participating per se because I am in training for my first marathon so lots of running. But I love following along and cheering people on from this side fo the screen!
Hi Gina! I know it’s been YEARS since this post…I just wanted to give you and your husband props for the turkey burger recipe. It’s literally the only turkey burger recipe I’m “allowed” to make for my beef-burger-lovin-husband. Thanks for sharing!
