A tip for fellow H2O slackers

Caro 1 of 1

I’ve been sucking with the whole water thing lately. Despite the fact that Liv is a water drinking machine, and constantly asking for “Agua! Agua!”, I still manage to forget. The kick in the pants was when I had my makeup done on Saturday for the wedding, and the makeup artist told me I was dehydrated. They usually ask if you have dry or oily skin, and I’ve always thought my skin was dry. From what she told me, it’s easy to be mistaken and think you’re skin is dry when you’re dehydrated. My skin is actually oily. Lucky me.

I’ve been on a mission to drink more water and even though I always have at least one bottle with us, I needed some extra motivation to drink enough by the end of the day.

I defaced a water bottle for the cause:

Water 1 of 1

I make it a goal to get to the line by the indicated time; it’s working well so far.

As much as I’d love to carry around an enormous water bottle, it’s easier for me to tote around a smaller one + a reminder to fill it up frequently!

Do you drink enough water? Here’s a little reminder to fill up your bottle or glass ASAP, mmmm k?

And sadly, coffee does not count 😉

Coffee 1 of 1

I spent a little while this afternoon in a coffee shop, studying for my NASM exam. I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s been challenging for me to carve out study time with everything going on. Since I had the day off from teaching, and madre offered to still come watch Liv for a little while, it was a perfect opportunity to put my study pants on.

Photo 91 The bummer news is that my Word document with EVERYTHING Summer Shape Up 2013-related is gone. I saved it while I was working and kept clicking the”save” icon, and now it’s like the file never existed. I’ve looked in finder, recent Word documents, spotlight, recycle bin, everywhere. Nada.

Instead of throwing my computer, I’m going to yoga.

USE GOOGLE DOCS!!! you’ll never regret it

    • Beks on May 16, 2013 at 9:44 pm

Seconded. I write Indie Published books, and I can work on stuff ANYWHERE! Even my Android!

  2. Sarah Fowler on May 15, 2013 at 7:48 pm

I never understood the big deal about water. I figured I’d get enough drinking with meals, milk was an okay replacement … blah blah blah. And then my dermatologist gave me a kick in the pants and said no fancy medicine or drug could do what simply drinking tons of water can. And while my skin isn’t perfect, the water has made SUCH a huge difference. Big believer in the goodness of water! 🙂

  3. Anne on May 15, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Oh no! There is NOTHING more frustrating than working your butt off on a project only to have your computer decide you don’t actually need it!

You handled it far better than I probably would have, Namaste indeed!

  4. Jenni on May 15, 2013 at 8:00 pm

I’m currently studying for my NASM exam too! I was just feeling guilty about how I haven’t even cracked the book today, haha. As for water, I’ve definitely been slacking lately and I can feel it! Not good. Thanks for the reminder! Namaste!

  5. Allison @ Train Eat Repeat on May 15, 2013 at 8:06 pm

I keep a 1L bottle of water with me at all times, I try to make sure i finish at least one bottle a day, if not two. Always have it one my desk at work and sip throughout the day. Weekends and evenings I seem to slack the most.

  6. kt h on May 15, 2013 at 8:07 pm

That is the worst! One of my student’s final projects (a very labor intensive movie) disappeared today. I wish he had been calm enough to decide to go to yoga!

    Good luck!

  7. Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries on May 15, 2013 at 8:22 pm

I typically do pretty well with my water intake during the warmer months, but it’s always a struggle for me when it gets old out! All I want is hot cocoa and coffee! 🙂 I love the water bottle idea!

  8. erica on May 15, 2013 at 8:34 pm

i’m constantly struggling with drinking enough water! i never seem to drink enough. i love the water bottle line idea.

  9. Liz on May 15, 2013 at 8:42 pm

Actually, you are lucky! Oily skin ages much better than dry skin. Win!

  10. Sheena on May 15, 2013 at 9:00 pm

Ditto to being lucky to having oily skin. I used to hate mine but now I embrace the fact that my oily skin ages better! 🙂

As for the drinking H2O, I find that having a cute water bottle/tumbler helps motivate me to stay hydrated and keep drinking throughout the day. Drinking enough water is important for me because when I don’t get enough, I tend to get bad headaches. Regarding the coffee, I’ve done some research and spoken with a couple docs about this – apparently the diuretic effects of coffee are minimal enough that you can indeed count your daily coffee towards your water intake.

  11. Miranda @ Miranda Runs on May 15, 2013 at 9:09 pm

I hate when my computer decides that my work isn’t important. Worst thing ever! I hope yoga calms your mind! Namaste 🙂

  12. Marsha on May 15, 2013 at 9:37 pm

Did you try accessing time machine and finding your document there? That’s what I used when I accidentally deleted a whole document.

    • Fitnessista on May 15, 2013 at 9:55 pm

my time machine was never turned on. blahhhhhh

  13. Brittany on May 15, 2013 at 9:53 pm

I dont have a thirst mechanism (best way I can describe it) so I dont really get thirsty during the day. I can go all day and realize that the last time I took a drink was the night before. I always have to force myself to drink because I get dehydrated and then all of a sudden I get SUPER thirsty and need some water right away. I am going to try this water bottle thing and see if it helps me. Thanks for this little tip! I can’t wait to try it!

    • Ali on May 15, 2013 at 11:04 pm

I am the EXACT same way! I can go days on end without thinking about drinking anything and then I get so thirsty that I don’t know what to do with myself! Baffling.

      • Brittany on May 16, 2013 at 7:05 am

Right?! It’s so annoying. My mom is the same way. Damn genetics. (apologies to Gina for my language!)

        • Ali on May 16, 2013 at 8:14 am

I get it from my dad! 🙁 My mom is a superhero when it comes to drinking water! Jealous!

  14. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on May 15, 2013 at 10:01 pm

This is a great idea! I’ve been horrible about drinking water lately too. Might need to try marking up my bottle too. 🙂

  15. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on May 15, 2013 at 10:13 pm

Ugghh so frustrating when that happens! Dumb computers. And I’ve been downing water like crazy as the temperatures have been heating up! Hope you are able to remember what you were working on for your document 🙂

  16. Ali @ Peaches and Football on May 15, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Last summer I went through a period where I was in tons of meetings at work and didn’t want to drink because it would mean painful meetings before I could dash out for a minute and use the restroom… combine that with super, mega HOT weather and exercising outside and I wound up with kidney stones. It was absolutely miserable. Learn from me everyone and drink a little more water. Your kidneys will thank you!

  17. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on May 15, 2013 at 10:17 pm

I need to be better about getting H2O too. Not related at all but did I miss Meg’s wedding recap? I’m so looking forward to wedding photos! haha

  18. Georgia on May 15, 2013 at 10:33 pm

YES! This is exactly where I am right now. That’s a really good idea. I have got to get on it before summer hits (and I start swelling in these last few weeks of pregnancy).

    Great reminder!

  19. Kathleen Brown on May 15, 2013 at 11:21 pm

    Isn’t coffee dehydrating?

    • Kathleen Brown on May 15, 2013 at 11:26 pm

Will write an article on over hydration? I find that many people do not even think there is such a thing; yet, it can be so dangerous, even deadly. According to Professor Anding,a renowned sport nutritionist.

      • Kathleen Brown on May 15, 2013 at 11:28 pm

Edit: will you write an article on… (Sorry).

  20. Emily Stember on May 16, 2013 at 12:37 am

Sometimes I have to remind myself to drink enough water, but usually I drink enough. Occasionally I’ve been known to over hydrated which is a real thing actually and quite scary.

Do you back your computer up? Check your time machine for any lost files! and consider using google docs and google+, backs everything up right onto your google profile on the interweb so it won’t get lost and you can keep everything private if you so wish! Super convenient!

  21. Priscilla P on May 16, 2013 at 12:41 am

I feel like I’m the same way with water – I just tend to forget! and coffee always sounds more appetizing! The skin on my face has been super dry in recent years so I wonder if that’s the main cause :s probably, huh…

  22. CourtStar @ StarSystemz on May 16, 2013 at 1:12 am

I always used to forget my WATER so now I force myself to carry a bottle with me and ever since I have been doing that, I drink it all day long since its in my purse and with me in the car. I hated my flaky skin and it was because I did not drink enough! Thanks for sharing that great idea! Love + Shine CourtStar

  23. Jelena@FabLifePhD on May 16, 2013 at 2:19 am

I love dirnking water! I think I have 10-12 glasses a day. I also drink about 2 glasses at night, I keep them next to my bed. The next thing I know is that I keep running to the toilet 20 times a day, so I have to reduce water when I am outside 🙂

  24. Lisa O on May 16, 2013 at 3:25 am

Have you ever done, or considered doing, a post on your childcare arrangements? I’m a freelance writer now as I’ve given up my fulltime work with a 15-month-old and would love to hear how you manage it. Sounds like you get great help from your mum, I do too but she resists a regular long stint as a newly-retired lady who is loving her freedom almost as much as her granddaughter! Thought it would make a helpful post for your mama readers (especially me obviously!) xx

  25. Lucie@FitSwissChick on May 16, 2013 at 4:25 am

Oh no!! Computers can be so mean – sorry for all your work!!
I do pretty good with hydrating when I am in the offfice. I drink unsweetened herbal or green tea all day and when it stands there it’s not a problem – I have to get better when I’m on the road though. I just keep forgetting it!!

  26. Mary on May 16, 2013 at 6:36 am

gallon a day over here! haha i keep gallons at my desk at work and just constantly refill my cup. my coworkers started calling me “jugs” bc of it (i am pretty unendowed up there which makes it funnier). it gets easier with time i think (drinking more water) if you just stick with it. boo on losing all the summer shapeup work you did 🙁

    • Fitnessista on May 16, 2013 at 11:23 am

      that is hilarious! 🙂

  27. Danielle on May 16, 2013 at 7:47 am

I am the worst about water drinking too! Thanks for the reminder. How frustrating your file is gone. That has happened to me before and it is definitely so aggravating!

  28. Liz on May 16, 2013 at 8:07 am

I LOVE water. Besides my coffee in the morning, it’s all I drink all day long. It hasn’t always been this way but after eliminating soda over 2 years ago, (haven’t had one since) water was the only other thing I wanted to drink. I try to get in a gallon and a half a day. I have a .7L Camelbak that gets filled more than 10 times at work and then always filled at home. It takes time to get to that point but once you start drinking water all the time like this it becomes habit and a lot easier. It’s something you don’t think about. I have actually turned around in the car and went back home because I forgot my water bottle. 🙂
Sorry to hear your file disappeared! Technology can really show it’s butt sometimes! 🙂

  29. MK on May 16, 2013 at 8:45 am

Did you happen to work on it from an email attachment or something like that? If you did, when you hit “save”, it will save the file to your temporary internet folder. I’d try checking there (if you haven’t already) just to be sure!

    • Fitnessista on May 16, 2013 at 11:31 am

no 🙁 it was all word document based. thank you for the tip, though!

  30. Staci on May 16, 2013 at 8:55 am

Great tip, I’m not good at drinking enough water as I should be.

I’m so looking forward to the Summer Shape Up, I’ve been living with my in-laws since late last summer and theres just not enough room at their house to do anything exercise related. We are finally moving out and into our own place and although our little cabin is only 300 square feet, there’s 3 acres of land right outside and a large porch for me to hangout and workout on. I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!

  31. Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed on May 16, 2013 at 9:00 am

Sometimes I chug water like a champion and find myself running to the ladies room all day, but other times I’m almost too lazy to leave my desk to go refill my cup (sad but true). I need to embrace the nice little break and always make sure to refill!

    Thanks for the reminder <3

  32. Kim on May 16, 2013 at 9:11 am

I drink boatloads of water every day!! The downside to drinking so much is your body craves it and I can’t even sleep through the night without water!
    Good luck with your test!!

  33. Nicole on May 16, 2013 at 9:12 am

Ugg I hate when you lose a file! I lost a file that had my whole kindergarten unit plan in it and had to start over! Hopefully you can recover it! I have a big nalgene and try to drink 2 a day, but have also been slacking on it! Need less coffee, more water! Thanks for the reminder!!

  34. Stellina @My Yogurt Addiction on May 16, 2013 at 9:59 am

I try to always have a water bottle with me and within my range of vision. If it’s on my desk, I’ll most likey drink it more often. If it’s not, I will forget!

  35. Cassie Vaughn on May 16, 2013 at 10:19 am

If nothing else, I have 2 daily goals: breathe and drink 3 liters of water. 🙂

  36. Alana on May 16, 2013 at 10:41 am

I’ve also been trying to focus on drinking more water every day. Adding some slices of lime or lemon and a handfull of frozen fruit (mango with lime is awesome) to my 32oz nalgene ensures that I drink at least 64oz throughout the day at my desk, mostly because I want to enjoy the mango pieces as a snack!

Fingers crossed your summer shapeup document will magicall reappear. That is the absolute worst.

  37. Rachel S. on May 16, 2013 at 11:14 am

I struggle with it to, but I went a bought a bunch of Nuun tablets, and have them sitting out so that it reminds me to go get water.

  38. Katie on May 16, 2013 at 11:22 am

Carolina looks so adorable in that pic!! It makes me want to go through the computer and snuggle her. 🙂

I’ve always had oily skin. I used to hate it when I was in high school (it would always be shiny by the end of the day), but the older I’ve gotten the more I’ve learned to control it better. I’m just glad the wrinkles will be few and far between when I get older!

Ever since I started my daily Bikram practice (I no longer practice Bikram, but more vinyasa these days), I’ve gotten into the habit of drinking water daily. 🙂 It just seems to give you so much more energy, too!

    • Katie on May 16, 2013 at 12:50 pm

Oops, meant to put Caroline. Must have been day dreaming about visiting the Carolinas! 😉

I love Cartel! We have a few here in Phoenix and they put one in at Sky Harbor! they are way better than Starbucks (if only I could give up my skinny carmel machiato addiction!)

  40. Annette on May 16, 2013 at 12:12 pm

Not that it will help you get your document back now, but one thing I always do/did when working on something important is to email it to myself in addition to excessively saving it over and over.

    • Fitnessista on May 16, 2013 at 12:16 pm

that’s a great tip. when i restart it today, i’ll definitely do that!

  41. Lee on May 16, 2013 at 2:22 pm

I love the water bottle idea! I have always filled up a big bottle to drink, only to have most of it left by the end of the day :/

  42. jen on May 16, 2013 at 2:32 pm

theres also this http://www.amazon.com/Sportline-Hydracoach-Intelligent-Water-Bottle-Blue/dp/B000O3Q6FG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368728980&sr=8-1&keywords=hydracoach. I drink tons of water I have a reusable bottle and fill it all day long, I have Crohn’s and always feel dehydrated no matter how much I drink.

  43. Chelsea on May 16, 2013 at 5:37 pm

I like your way of labeling the same bottle for the different times – not wanting to carry around a ginormous/multiple water bottles in a day is the primary reason I’ve been shying away from that method, but I think that’s pretty darn brilliant! Especially since upping the H20 intake is one of my main goals for the summer 😀

    • Fitnessista on May 16, 2013 at 5:39 pm

exactly 🙂 a few of my friends carry around gallons with them, but with livi and all of her stuff + my stuff, there’s no way

  44. Beks on May 16, 2013 at 9:48 pm

I’ve recently started drinking more water because it got really hot really quickly here in Iowa/Nebraska, so I’m always thirsty. I’m not great about getting my water during the water, and I have massive headaches because of it. So far, I’ve been drinking about two of the Large size you get from the movies (I got a Breaking Dawn: Part 1 Cup from when I saw the midnight showing 🙂 ), and it helps a lot. When I get home, I have a Smart Water bottle that I refill, and drink about two or three of them before bed.
I think my skin is probably oily, too. My skin usually feels like combo skin, but when I’m properly hydrated, there is NO dry skin anywhere. 🙂

  45. Eileen on May 18, 2013 at 7:48 pm

Another great idea to monitor water intake is to wrap your water bottle with hair ties, move them down each time you fill it up. I start each day with 5 hair bands- like for ponytails- wrapped around the top part of my 20 oz water bottle. Each time I fill it up, I move one hair tie down. I try to get all of them moved down throughout the day. It has done wonders for me, I’ve gone from about 20 oz/day to 100 oz!

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 11:08 pm

      i love that tip!

  46. Pam on May 18, 2013 at 9:45 pm

I’ve been thinking about getting NASM certified. What do you think of the studying so far? Are you taking 3-6 months to complete?

    • Fitnessista on May 18, 2013 at 11:08 pm

the studying has been hard for me with my schedule (working, blogging, taking care of oliv) so i’m taking my time. i enjoy the course material, but even though i’ve been using a majority of it for years, i’m learning a lot of new content.

  47. Alissa on May 19, 2013 at 12:59 am

I started a new workout program almost 3 weeks ago & it kicks my butt! I am not a big water drinker & I will drink 30-40 oz in 2 hours between the workout itself & the hour after. It’s crazy!!! Then the rest of the day is still a push, but it’s great to know that I am not alone!

  48. Emily on May 23, 2013 at 8:00 am

I only drink water, some days more, some days less. Drinking my daily allotment is so tough no matter how many lemons I cram in my Nalgene.
