Burn, blast and balance workout!
Hi friends! How’s your week been? It feels great to be back in the swing of things. I had an amazing day with Livi, madre and nana, an awesome dinner with the Pilot, and a great yoga class. Today is my first full day back at teaching since my little tumble, so fingers crossed that everything is bueno.
This past weekend, my friend Sara and I went to film a little workout video to share. When we got to Sabino Canyon, the entire parking lot was blocked off. I thought maybe they were just repaving the lot, because it looked brand new, until I realized that it’s closed. Hikers and bikers were still making their way through the canyon, but all of the buildings were dark. The bathrooms were locked and with the exception of a few athletes, it felt like a ghost town. It was sad to see such a lively and vibrant place looking so morose.
So, Sara and I brought a little life back into it ๐
You may recognize my friend Sara from our Soli Beat DVD. She is a firecracker of energy, and we share the same love for green juices and yoga.
(the bloopers are amazing)
She asked me to film a video with her, and we thought it would be fun to do one with a beautiful scenic background. Sabino was the obvious choice. She’s braver than I am in the sense that she doesn’t give a sh*****t who walks by while we’ve filming, which also made me a little braver (unlike last time’s awkwardsauce). We put this workout together by combining strength movements, plyometrics and balance: all effective strategies to torch calories, burn fat, challenge balance and build stronger muscles, including the tiny stabilizers.
She instructs most of the video and I lead the ab sequence at the end. During the workout, I also provide low-impact and beginner modifications. Of course, if you’re just getting started in fitness or you have an injury, check with a doc before making any fitness changes.
Here’s a text version for my friends at work:
and the video!
You can complete it up to 3 total times for a killer cardio, balance and strength combo.
We hope you love it!
xoxo

How often do you work out outdoors?
This workout looks like a good one, I’ll definitely have to try this one out!
I don’t workout outside too often, since I’m not a big runner – well, actually I do walk everyday since I have a dog…but besides that not all that often since it’s a bit chillier where I live.
Awesome workout!!!
Can’t wait to try this! Also, I have a post request: would you consider doing a wardrobe essentials post? Like favorite outfits, shoes, accessories, etc.? Maybe even a workout clothes essentials post? Needing some fresh ideas for the fall. Thanks!
Great idea! I second the request! I loved it when Gina posted a Summer Workout gear guide (http://fitnessista.com/2012/07/summer-workout-gear/) …. (Lulu Speed shorts all the way!….and Body Glide for long cycling sessions…)
I cant wait until Im not at work so I can watch the workout video! That is such a gorgeous backdrop.
Video looks great and I really like the compound moves.
I love working out outdoors. When I lived in Chicago, they offered a lot of classes outside: Zumba, yoga etc. Now that I have moved back to Milwaukee, most of my outdoor working out is done in the form of running with abs afterward.
Loved the workout! Those jumping lunges always get me:) Thanks ladies, you did a great job. And Gina I love the video intro very cute!
Can’t wait to try this!
Awesome workout! I haven’t quite mastered the jumping lunges – I can do about 5 in a row haha – so I will have to modify this to just backwards lunges ๐
Love this Gina! The workout looks fab and I can’t wait to watch the video because you’re always great on camera! I managed to get a really good outdoor run in on the weekend but I think our weekends of outdoor workouts (that aren’t freezing cold) are numbered. We’ve been blessed with an unusually warm fall, but I don’t think it’ll be long before the frost comes. I’m a fair weather runner, so it’ll be indoors for me! ๐
Wow love this! can’t wait until my leg is better to try this out! ๐
Very cool!! I love the background! Since winters here are so cold, I try to workout as much as I can while the weather is nice. I try to take my yoga practice outside and I’m not afraid to get out on the deck and do some cardio or toning. I also love taking classes that are hosted outside and of course, participating in activities that require you to be outdoors like cycling or kayaking.
Love working out outside/bodyweight circuits!
Love this! Will definitely being trying it out sometime soon!
Can’t wait try it out! Love the background – you are so lucky to have such sunny weather in October!
I love the concept of this workout and that all exercises are using your own bodyweight (since I can’t always get to the gym)! Definitely trying it out this weekend!
This looks like an awesome workout! I absolutely love combining strength moves with plyometric moves. And balance is always a great skill to maintain!
Great workout! I definitely need to try this one. I only get outside once a week or so to run on the weekends since I usually work out super early when it’s still dark out!
I tried the workout just now during my lunch break and it was fun and challenging. Thanks!!
yay- i’m happy you liked it!
I’m always looking for new videos or circuits and lately yours have been killer!! Can’t wait to try this!
My boyfriend just became a certified Les Mills instructor, and we decided to practice the grit cardio sequence this morning. Except instead of the usual gym studio, we did it on the street just outside my house… Let’s just say I got a lot of weird looks from my neighbors. They’ve seen me running before, but I think watching me play music from my sad little laptop speakers and sprint and do burpees and jumping lunges was a bit odd. A neighbor’s doggies came and wanted to sniff me while I was doing mountain climbers. I asked them to go away but they just licked me instead! Mmm salty sweat. Meanwhile my boyfriend just watched all of this and told me to run faster. Argh! But also, lol.
I usually only workout outdoors if I’m running, but I bet it would be fun to change it up and do a circuit style workout in the lovely fall weather
I love your workouts – thank you so much for sharing this new one, I’m excited to try it out! I particularly love no-equipment workouts, as I don’t currently have a gym membership and only own a kettlebell, so double yay!
I really want to exercise outside beside but it feels to weird to do squats with everyone watching! :s I gotta get over that so I can enjoy the lovely scenery!
I will definitely be trying this soon…but probably somewhere private since I am super awkward working out in public
I didn’t spit out a little red wine when he said, “I want to paint you.” ๐
Great workout! I love the types of exercises and that there are some new things, especially the ab burner. The sets take so long to complete that I wasn’t really looking forwards doing them again, though. Good to have some new ideas to throw in with other workouts.
since i’m a runner, i workout outdoors almost every day ๐
Oh I LOVE these workout videos! I definitely going to try this today! The scenery looks awesome.
Sabino Canyon parking was closed due to the government shutdown.
i know, it just took me a second to realize what was going on! so sad ๐
Hey this looks really fun! I’m in the burn phase of my training right now so this could be helpful. Love the Breaking Bad setting! haha!
Thank you so much!! I just did your video twice through, and it was the perfect at-home workout–quick, fun, and I could feel the burn! I love that you posted it as a printable, too.
Loved this video!! Thank you ๐
loved the video! can’t wait try this workout!
Saw your video and tried the routine… I was pooped! How can you look so calm and relaxed? I was swea… glowing like a pig! You are so lucky to be able to do your workouts in such a beautiful setting.
What a beautiful place! I think those mountains would make me workout harder! Just cold, damp, and flat here in Iowa. Great video!
I did this this AM and was a sweaty mess = )
