2015 Holiday Gift Guide: for the kids

I LOVE shopping for kids, even though Iโ€™ve mentioned before that Livi is a little tougher to shop for. The little lady rarely tells us she wants anything. Iโ€™ve been trying to get ideas from her, and last time I checked she said sheโ€™d like โ€œa ball.โ€ There are so many adorable kids’ items, especially over the holidays, that itโ€™s easy to go a little overboard. To prevent that, we like to stick to the โ€œsomething they want, something they need, something to wear, and something to readโ€ mentality. This way, all of the bases are covered. Plus, letโ€™s be real, they have the most fun with the boxes and wrapping paper anyway. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here are some gift ideas for the little guy or lady youโ€™re shopping for this holiday season!

Kids gift guide

Something they want:

A Razor scooter. Liv has a scooter (this one– on sale right now) and she loves it so much. She asks to ride her scooter every day.

Rody horse. This is another favorite in our house. The great thing about Rody is that you can just add more air for older/taller kids.

Play kitchen. Liv has this one and itโ€™s still a huge hit.

Bike with training wheels or balance bike + helmet.

Roller skates.

Lego sets. Iโ€™ve found out that kids are obsessed with Legos. Iโ€™ve also found out that they hurt a lot when you step on them haha.

Calico Critters. Livi is really into make believe and playing with dolls, and especially loves playing house with her Calico Critters.

Something they need:

Warm jacket.

Pajamas.

School or art supplies. Michaelโ€™s always has a great selection of art gear, and I find a lot of coloring books and art stuff at TJ Maxx on the cheap.

Athletic or dance gear, like new cleats, uniforms, leotards, or ballet shoes. Kohlโ€™s has some super cute and inexpensive gymnastic outfits, and since Liv has to have a very specific leotard for her ballet school, I order those on Amazon.

Dishes or kidsโ€™ silverware. These are easy stocking stuffers, plus we always tend to lose them somehow and need to replenish the stash.

Something to wear:

Rain boots. Cutest ever.

Dress-up clothes

Printed sweaters

Sequin tee.

Mini Melissa ballet shoes. <โ€” amazing deal

Something to read:

Mercer Mayer books

Little Golden books

The Pinkalicious series

Dragons Love Tacos <โ€” we read this one all the time!

The Day the Crayons Quit

Olivia

Shel Silverstein

Eric Carle

For stocking stuffers, I like to add in some gummy bunnies, bubbles, coloring books, markers, cool sunglasses, and little treats.

What are you getting the kids in your family this year? What was your favorite Christmas gift when you were a kid? When I was really young, I got a talking doll called โ€œJulie.โ€ That was my favorite toy for YEARS, and for the 80s, the technology was pretty awesome. I actually found a YouTube video of the doll, and as an adult, itโ€™s super creepy now haha.

xoxo

Gina

The scooter says it is recommended for kids age 5 and older. Do you think it’s appropriate for kids younger than that? could a 3 year old handle it?

    • Fitnessista on December 10, 2015 at 9:54 pm

i’m not sure. i’ve seen a lot of small kids riding them along the beach. i was going to take liv to test one out, but i think a 3 year old could handle it

sorry I wasn’t clear about that. I meant the scooter livi has now. Could a two year old handle it or would it be a source of frustration?

it wasn’t until liv was 2 1/2 that she really started to get into it. at 3, she it was much easier for her to learn how to steer

My younger cousins are my favorite people to shop for! I go crazy for them- too crazy according to their parents. ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I canโ€™t help it! Itโ€™s so much fun to watch them light up. Love these ideasโ€ฆ especially the art tools. Itโ€™d be awesome to watch what they create!

My husband is building my lego loving boys a lego table. That’s the main gift they are getting and sharing. We try to keep Christmas light and try to keep us all focused on Jesus and the meaning of the holiday. Then we choose to go big for bdays. ๐Ÿ™‚ i got dolls forever for Christmas. I was the baby of the family and i think my mom just couldn’t stop with the baby dolls. ๐Ÿ™‚ But i remember my sister getting the Game of Life. We loved that game!!

Have you ever ordered from discountdance.com? My daughter’s dance school requires plain, one color leotards, they have really cute designs and they are are really inexpensive and cheap shipping too!

Great list Gina! My son LOVES the book “the day the crayons died” at school so that is a must, I had forgotten the name so thanks for the reminder. I see so many bloggers doing the “4 gift” thing and kudos for sticking with it, I just never seem to be able to…I have SO much fun buying all the fun toys! And the “real” meaning of Christmas is important to our family.
Thanks again for the great ideas!!!!

My niece loves Calico Critters! I seriously go crazy this time of year buying for my nieces and nephews, there are so many really fun toys and books out there. It’s hard to stop!

Um, this could not have come at a better time, I am clueless what to get my nieces and nephews! One of my friends just had a baby and is swearing by a baby log she got called Duo Diary…not a kids present at all, but a great idea for a new mom. Basically it takes the idea of a baby log like hospitals use but there’s a page for mom to track her own wellness with a food journal and sleep/water/exercise. wwwduodiary.com Other than that, we;re looking at Melissa and Doug toys!
