What’s Going On Here?

Itโ€™s almost 6pm and I havenโ€™t blogged yetโ€ฆ.

or eaten a single vegetable.

I have, however, celebrated my cousinโ€™s graduation

graduation

and caught up with the familia <3

One of my little brothers (I have 4) surprised us and caught a plane from Tucson to Orlando with my cousin last night! I wasnโ€™t even mad when he jumped on the bed I was sharing with my nana at 2:30 in the morning ๐Ÿ˜‰

me and trev

I missed his little face ๐Ÿ™‚

Some recent eats:

Black bean soup from Panera

soup

Greek salad with extra veggies, no cheese and crusty wheaty baguette

salad

I ate cowโ€™s dairy last night, even though I usually opt for goatโ€™s dairy. (Itโ€™s easier for me to digest and cowโ€™s dairy makes me break out)

yogurt (2)

This girl wanted some Fro Yo ๐Ÿ˜‰

We got Menchieโ€™s which is by-the-ounce and you get to add your flavors and toppings.

I rolled with mango sorbet (vegan) and some dulce de leche and cake batter (not vegan), with chocolate syrup and blueberries.

yogurt

It was gloriousโ€ฆand totally worth the stomach ache and two small volcanoes which have appeared on my face.

A banana burrito!
burrito

Wheat tortilla with almond butter, cinnamon and jelly- try it, youโ€™ll love it ๐Ÿ˜€

Oats from Bizzle with two apricots (from my purse!) and cinnamon

oats

Planet Smooooothie (Something Lizard? Basically peaches, strawberries and ice)

smoothie

The smoothie tasted *almost* like an Eegeeโ€ฆ

If youโ€™ve ever been to Tucson, chances are that youโ€™ve had an Eegee. Theyโ€™re slushy drinks and each month, they have a flavor of the month (on top of the usual strawberry, pina colada and lemon). Watermelon (July) is my absolute fave ๐Ÿ˜€ The thing that makes Eegees totally different from other slushies is the ice- itโ€™s super thin and fine (you can drink it from a straw) and they make it with real fruit instead of syrups- the pina colada flavor has pineapple and coconut pieces, and sometimes youโ€™ll get an entire strawberry in the strawberry flavor.

Any special food or drinks that you have in your hometown that you love?? For me, Eegees takes the cake. I heard a rumor that you can ship the party sized Eegee packs overnight, in case any Tucson familia is feeling generous heh heh ๐Ÿ˜‰

Weโ€™re off to my favorite Orlando place for dinner ๐Ÿ˜€

See ya in the morning <3

xoxo,

G$

Born and raised in Tucson, but forced to leave my beloved Eegees as well. Funny enough, the thing that people miss most about Tucson is ALWAYS Eegees. At least, when I get home sick, I have a local Bison Witches :o)

i love bison witches! one of my good friends still works there ๐Ÿ™‚

I love Egees, and really like Orange Dream, this months flavor! Plus a veggie grinder, no cheese, extra pepperoncinis! The fries are sort of irresistable too ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 8:04 pm

those veggie grinders are AWESOME… and the fries. well, i have no words. no one’s fries are like eegee fries ๐Ÿ™‚

My hometown fave is Cedars Restaurant. I’m from Orlando and their Lebanese cuisine knocks my socks off!

P.S. Love your site, you have inspired me to change my eating and exercise habits! Thank you!

I’d love to hear more about giving up cow’s dairy for your complexion. How did you discover the connection? When I eat 100% clean, my complexion is beautiful, but I haven’t quite narrowed down the exact culprits of the break out seshes. I am thinking a combo of sugar and dairy.

So…goat’s dairy doesn’t hurt you? I might have to make the switch… ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 10:52 pm

sugar will do it to me too… i had a lot of dessert in the bahamas and my face is paying the price
goat’s dairy is much easier for me to digest and doesn’t affect my skin- and it tastes SO good ๐Ÿ˜€

  15. amyjogo on May 22, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Eegee!!!! MMMM Perfect time of year for one. Yeah yeah, I know it’s always the perfect time in Tucson.

Favorite local food: green chile. I’m originally from New Mexico. We buy them fresh and have them roasted. Then get em home and peel them before freezing. I can’t resist slapping one on a tortilla sprinkled with a little garlic, salt and cheese. MMM!!

  16. Heather on May 22, 2010 at 9:44 pm

True story: I gave up veganism for fro-yo, goat cheese and fish. Actually, reading your blog made me realize that while I believe that veganism is really great and it’s how I strive to eat 80% of the time, I was also using it as a crutch to be OCD and be a control freak about what I put in my body. I thought that if I didn’t “allow” myself to eat a little dairy here and there then I couldn’t splurge and devour a container of ice cream. NEWSFLASH: devouring coconut milk ice cream is still not good for me, either. Healthier saturated fats, but still ๐Ÿ™‚ So I’ve relaxed with my dietary choices and I feel so much better about all of it. Letting myself have a little goat cheese on a salad or getting a small fro-yo when I want something sweet is NOT going to kill me, and I’ve gained a much healthier relationship with my food choices. So, thanks! ๐Ÿ™‚ ALSO: was that a high school graduation at Amway Arena?

    • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 10:51 pm

that’s awesome- i NEED goat cheese and fish in my life… along with occasional fro yo ๐Ÿ˜‰
yes it was a high school graduation and it was at UCF

  17. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on May 22, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Have a great time w/ your family and at dinner! I grew up in the midwest…I think the signature drink there is milk. Lots of dairy farms. Not my scene LOL

In my hometown (Clearwater, FL) there’s this restaurant called Frenchys- they have the BEST walnut chicken salad, it comes with fresh fruit and banana bread… soo good, I have to get it every time I go there!

  19. Whitney@Whitinspired on May 22, 2010 at 9:57 pm

There is this little bakery/cafe in my town that is SO good. We went there for breakfast today and I had my favorite, their french toast…made with their made from scratch cinnamon-raisin bread. It was heaven!

Is that a high school graduation?? That is HUGE! So glad you got to see your little brother! (I’ll see mine in 5 more days!)

In Nashville where I’m from there’s a great place called Chef’s Market. They have delicious salads, hot foods, soups and incredible desserts!

    • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 10:50 pm

yes, it was a HS graduation- it was a private school so there were only about 250 graduates

      • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 10:50 pm

there were a LOT of people there, though!!

  21. Stacey on May 22, 2010 at 11:03 pm

It’s a tie, a local ice cream place(lactose intolerant and I have IBS, but this ice cream is worth it!) called Ted and Wally’s, and a local vegetarian place called McFoster’s Natural Kind Cafe. Ted and Wally’s make their ice cream in house *every* morning, and they’re always different(you can make requests the night before and pick up a gallon the next day). McFoster’s is a nice, hippy-ish place with amazing eggplant parm, so good, and ridiculous sweet potato fries/banana ketchup.

  22. Hayley on May 22, 2010 at 11:06 pm

I’m the same way. I have froyo maybe 3 times a year, but when I need it… I need it. Stomach ache and all!

  23. Marshall on May 22, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Love the sandals! I’m from Chicago so deep dish pizza from anywhere is a must have when I visit!

  24. Leah on May 22, 2010 at 11:08 pm

Hmmm . . . I havent been eating much dairy lately, and my skin is looking clearer than it has in ages. I never thought there might be a connection. I should look into that. I guess its a good think I love goats cheese!!

  25. Kelly on May 22, 2010 at 11:31 pm

Oh, I miss Eegee’s so much! When I was on swim team growing up, we had Eegee’s at every meet! My husband and I are talking about visiting Tucson early next year and I plan to have an Eegee EVERY DAY. And maybe some pizza fries. And carne asada burros from Los Betos. And a barbacoa burro from Sanchez. And the Heartbreaker from Cup Cafe. Oh, I miss the food in Tucson…

  26. Kelly on May 22, 2010 at 11:33 pm

One more thing: I’ve introduced a lot of New Englanders to the cheese crisp. They are always grateful.

    • Fitnessista on May 22, 2010 at 11:39 pm

      mmmm cheese crisp!
      don’t forget good egg ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m from Tucson (live in Florida now) and Eegees is one of my faves! I’ll be there all of June, so I will definitely be popping in!

Hi! New reader just poking my head out to say hi. I love love loved all of your vacation posts, your blog is so entertaining to read :O)

As far as food goes, my hometown has this amazing Mexican restaurant. I don’t know what it is about it but I have never found any other Mexican food that compares to it. It’s just a tiny little restaurant tucked away in the middle of town but so yummy. It’s a huge splurge diet-wise so I hardly ever go, but when I was away at college that was the first place I went with the fam when I was back ๐Ÿ™‚ I think it’s fun to have those things that remind you of a specific place, it makes them so much more special.

  29. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on May 23, 2010 at 12:58 am

Cute pic of you and the bro. And I’m glad that I’m not the only person that adds random things, found in their purse, to their food. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love Banana wraps! They are my fav!!!

When I go to phoenix I must go to Macayo’s and get the enchiladas with veggies on the side. When I go home, I just enjoy the fact that there is a Panera in town!

  31. Nicole @ Geek Turned Athlete on May 23, 2010 at 5:21 am

I do love Bison Witches!!! Eegee’s, not so much! haha. The last sandwich that I had from there was full of mayo, eww! When we lived in Tucson, we also loved going to Sanchez’s, 58 degrees, and Feast not to mention North! I miss La Encantada badly!

  32. Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on May 23, 2010 at 5:51 am

In the Philadelphia area we have a chain of convenience stores called Wawa. When describing them to people they immediately compare it to a 7-11, but they’re SO different (and better!). It’s a gas station, convenience store, hoagie shop (way better than Subway even!), salad bar, smoothie/milkshake place, and there’s a huge selection of grab and go items with tons of salads, sandwiches, and fresh fruit. No 7-11 I’ve ever seen sells sliced mango, chocolate banana smoothies and spinach salads!

  34. Brittany on May 23, 2010 at 9:04 am

Oh man! You were totally on the UCF campus! I live right next door to the University!
We were so close! (in a non-creepy stalker kind of way)

  35. Jen on May 23, 2010 at 9:20 am

Near Quantico, VA there is a very tiny ice cream place called Jo-Jo’s. It has the BEST soft serve ice cream! Every time I visit my parents we have to go to Jo-Jo’s!

Fun Fact: I also have four younger brothers! There was never a dull moment growing up, huh??? ๐Ÿ™‚

Eegee’s remind me of Rita’s Water Ices in Philly. Love those, though Eegees sound yummier with the real fruit.

I LOVE EEGEES!!!!!! Piรฑa Colada is my all-time favorite. Its so true, though. You haven’t had an excellent slushie until you’ve tried Eegees. I am from Tucson and go to U of A and I am always introducing my out of state friends to the little treats. I was a huge fan of the ranch fries back in my high school days but now I just look upon them as a fond memory of how I USED to eat ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol

  39. Anna (munchingmamacita) on May 24, 2010 at 8:38 pm

Another Tucson treat that I LOVE and I’m sure you’ve tried…RASPADOS!!! Yummmmmm talk about real fruit.
