Fill it with Millet

Hey guys! How are ya? Happy INDIAN FOOD Wednesday! Who’s celebrating?? You know I am 😉

Last night was pretty chill… unlike Glee, which was INTENSE. (I changed the channel from Biggest Loser to Glee…. Personal trainer, but I was a musical theatre nerd loooong before I got into fitness. Gotta stick to my roots, yo) Poker Face rocked my face off 😀

Post weights snack was courtesy of the Vega Fairy, who sent these lovely goodies:

(Disclaimer: yes, these were a gift from Vega, but I only accept products for the blog that I would purchase with my own money –I just bought a boatload of Vega stuff in Hotlanta– and use on a regular basis. You’ll never see random stuff here)

Vega Shake and Go Smoothie in Vanilla Almondilla and Tropical Tango

At first I was wondering which cup to use and I remembered THIS!

smoothie

A GLASS smoothie shaker that my friend Ashley surprised me with 😀

It was perfect for my smoothie-to-go

smoothie (2)

The verdict? Amazing. But seriously, when do I not like Vega stuff? Plant-based protein, tastes like heaven, mostly raw… it was smoothie love at first sip 😉

Dinner:

Salad with honey mustard dressing, grape tomatoes and Garlic Gold

salad

2 cups of Trader Joes Vegan Black bean soup.. which I de-veganized with a blanket of goat gouda

soup

(Wish I had some cilantro to garnish… brown soup isn’t very aesthetically appealing, haha)

and still snacky, I had some millet bread with almond butter and jam.

millet

Sometimes you’ve gotta fill it with millet 😉

It’s time to do this morning’s Insanity workout with Ashley and then head to work.

Want some raw macaroons??

Head over to my friend Angela’s Shop 4 a Cause silent auction for charity – I donated a batch of macaroons for the amazing cause and am happy to pay international shipping to the highest bidder.

Happy shopping!

Something to talk about: What’s your “signature dessert”? Something you’d be most likely to order from a restaurant or make for company. My number one is probably the macaroon, but number two would have to be a pizookie 😉

Yum!!! All of that food looks awesome! I’d have to say my signature dessert to order at a restaurant is Tiramisu. 🙂 Heavenly! However since I have no clue how to make it, I usually bake some sort of cake for company – caramel, chocolate, etc. 🙂

  2. Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow on May 26, 2010 at 10:00 am

Shop 4 a Cause has so many fabulous things! Love that Angela. 🙂

I really really must get my hands on some Vega products. It’s time, I need to enter that world!

My signature dessert…hmm. To make? That would be cupcakes. A classic- love them, love adding fillings and new frostings. To order? Chocolate molten lava cake. A dream!

  3. Romy on May 26, 2010 at 10:00 am

My signature dessert? Probably “Crème brulée” or “Fondant au chocolat” 😀 I love these two!!!! Yummy 😀

  4. Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin on May 26, 2010 at 10:05 am

I don’t really make desserts at home and it’s hard to pick one that I always get when i go out, but i almost always order green tea ice cream if i see it on a menu!

  5. Therese on May 26, 2010 at 10:09 am

I saw your macaroons! May have to bid! I think my signature “dessert” is the fudge I make at Christmas time, everyone bugs me for it!

But now that I’ve made this braided bread (also up for auction at Shop4ACause – Canada only shipping though as it’s fresh bread), I think it may become a quick hit! 😀

  6. SMK on May 26, 2010 at 10:12 am

    Hi
Love you blog as always.Where do you buy the millet bread, which brand is that?

    You are such an inspiration.

food for life brand in the yellow bag… i get it too 🙂

  7. Jessica @ How Sweet on May 26, 2010 at 10:12 am

I’d have to say mine is cheesecake. Or tiramisu. 🙂

  8. Whitney @ Whitinspired on May 26, 2010 at 10:20 am

Easy. This group of restaurants in town has a dessert called “Coconut Sushi”. It is delicious. Beyonddelicious. Ad it has two dipping sauces, caramel and dark chocolate. Talk about face rocking.

  9. RhodeyGirl on May 26, 2010 at 10:22 am

And all along I have been pronouncing it mill-ay. What is wrong with me!

    • Shelly on May 26, 2010 at 10:35 am

If it makes you feel any better, when I read the word vegan (“vee-gan”), in my head it sounds like “vay-gan.” I only recently realized that I was mispronouncing it.

    • Gretchen on May 26, 2010 at 11:02 am

I thought it was mill-ay for the longest time too! I blame it on speaking French though 🙂

  10. Naomi (onefitfoodie) on May 26, 2010 at 10:25 am

homemade ice cream sandwiches!!! fresh baked cookies with ice cream or fro yo stuffed in side!!! I LOVE making those it makes a HUGE difference when the cookies are freshly baked!!

new vega products!!! <3 them!! gotta try these!

that glass smoothie conatiner is PERFECTTTTT

  11. allison @ livingoneday on May 26, 2010 at 10:26 am

sig dessert is creme brulee, although ive never made it for guests, and probably never would! what is a pizooki?? I NEED ONE!

  12. Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches on May 26, 2010 at 10:27 am

Whatever the chocolate option is, I’ll generally choose it. If the word “dark” comes before “chocolate”, I don’t even need convincing at that point.

  13. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on May 26, 2010 at 10:27 am

I absolutely adore Vega products too. My dad went to Costco and got some of the smoothie mix when I was younger and I was HOOKED! I’ll need to convince him this summer to buy some more.

  14. Shelly on May 26, 2010 at 10:27 am

I’m a pretty good cook- but I am lousy at dessert, so I don’t have a signature one. My parents love my bread pudding (a dessert I make for other people b/c I don’t actually like bread pudding) and I’ve had good luck with blondies and whole wheat shortbread cookies recently. But given a choice I generally just pick up a box of 2 bite brownies from Whole Foods b/c I am obsessed with them. (And obviously that means I only get them when I can share them with a bunch of people so I don’t eat them ALL.)

  15. Heather (Heather's Dish) on May 26, 2010 at 10:28 am

oh.my.gosh. i love pizookies! i don’t know what my signature dessert might be since i try to change it up…probably some sort of cookie bar or just plain ice cream? i don’t discriminate 🙂

  16. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on May 26, 2010 at 10:41 am

Definitely bread pudding. Even better if it has some Bourbon sauce on top. Mmm…

  17. Kristin on May 26, 2010 at 10:48 am

I’m curious, do you have a healthier version of the pizookie? The picture looks amazing, so I’m curious as to the sugar content.

  18. Gwen on May 26, 2010 at 10:48 am

Apple pie – I love to bake it (I follow a Paula Dean recipe that is bangin!) and I am always drawn to whatever the apple dessert is on the menu! 🙂 YUMO

  19. Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on May 26, 2010 at 10:50 am

I hear millet bread is delicious. I have to try some next time I come across it. My go-to dessert is usually ice cream or cheesecake. Love me some dairy, lol.

    I love the smoothie shaker!!!!

  22. Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine on May 26, 2010 at 11:30 am

Chocolate cake is definitely my thing!! I have a fantastic recipe that always gets rave reviews, and I always order it when I’m out. One of the only things that keep me from being 100% vegan 🙂

  23. Danielle (Runs on Green) on May 26, 2010 at 11:30 am

I want the Vega fairy to come to my door!! I’m currently reading THRIVE and I’m hooked 🙂

I saw your ‘roons on Angela’s site and I def. perked up. Since I’m poor, I’m going to try & get mi familia to donate!

  24. Lisa (Lisa at Home) on May 26, 2010 at 11:33 am

Ah, such a tease with those macaroons!!! My signature summer dessert would be key lime pie… and in the fall, pumpkin parfaits. YUM, I’m hungry just thinking about it!

  25. Lindsey @ Foodie on the Rocks on May 26, 2010 at 11:34 am

Back when I detested baking (because I felt like it was way too tedious) the only thing I could muster the motivation to make was Ina Garten’s Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Icing. These are absolutely mind blowing! I don’t think I possess the vocabulary to adequately describe how good they are ;)!

    • Fitnessista on May 26, 2010 at 11:37 am

i’ve made them before.. they’re amazing, especially with that frosting 🙂

  26. anne on May 26, 2010 at 11:38 am

    Loved P-P-P-Poker Face last night!!

Favorite dessert to make is easy — chocolate chip cookie bars

  31. Brittany on May 26, 2010 at 11:53 am

I just made macaroons as well! I need to put them in the freezer because every time I walk in the kitchen I want to eat one. 🙂

  32. Paige (Running Around Normal) on May 26, 2010 at 11:58 am

That smoothie shaker is awesome! Wants one 😀
I DIE to taste those macaroons! Mmm. Love me some macaroons too. I typically order anything with the words “fudgy, chocolatey, or brownie” in the description 😉

  33. Allie (Live Laugh Eat) on May 26, 2010 at 12:00 pm

Bahaha I had this same title and so did Kath. Gosh, great minds think so so alike…as do great bellies 🙂 Millet bread is ze very best!

  34. Katie @ Ordinary Girl, Extraordinary Journey on May 26, 2010 at 12:11 pm

That tropical tango vega sounds delish!!!

The desserts I always order are creme brulee and/or tiramisu. As far as what I make for company, my husband always asks me to make unique flavors of cupcakes when we have people over or for birthdays/special occassions.

  35. Kris | iheartwellness.com on May 26, 2010 at 12:36 pm

Ahhh I am in heaven with that Tropical Tango shake & go! I did a video demoing this super easy full of life shake on the blog 😉 I was also sent the Berry one….I still like the Tango better!

How is the vanilla? That is next on my list!

I make dessert depending on the season. In the spring/summer, its a blueberry strudel-ly sort of thing – yum! Will you share the recipe for your raw macaroons ? They look scrumptious and I can’t seem to find any similar recipes. Thanks!

  38. Brynne on May 26, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Glee rocked! And I’m dying to try the Vega smoothies now. Thanks for introducing me to millet bread – I’m addicted :o)

  39. Catherine on May 26, 2010 at 1:10 pm

Hmm I don’t know if I have a “signature” dessert dish that I make every time for company because I love mixing it up and trying new challenges although I have been known for my homemade truffles and eclairs when I want to go the extra mile and make something super fancy.

  40. SMK on May 26, 2010 at 1:22 pm

Cant help asking again..Where did you source the millet bread again?Readers please chime in;-)

    Gina,

What juicer do you use/recommend? I’m considering buying/registering for one but I’m not sure what to get! Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on May 26, 2010 at 1:59 pm

      hey bethany,
i loved my jack lalanne juicer that heab gave to me (heather eats almond butter) and also used a breville juice fountain plus when i was at culinary school. they’re both amazing

hey gina! I know this is completely random, but id seriously love to learn about some DEEP DEEP stretching tips you may have. i know the downward dog, but my heels do touch the floor and im looking for some deeper stretches, particularly for the legs/calves/feet/thighs. do you know any deep yoga stretches for this? or other kinds? it would mean so much to me (and my legs haha) to learn some new stretches! thanks aton 🙂

  45. Ilana on May 26, 2010 at 2:23 pm

My signature “make for company” dessert is either chocolate chip cookies, chocolate dipped strawberries, or a seasonal fruit tart. I’m perfecting my raw crust now.

  46. Ilana on May 26, 2010 at 2:24 pm

Also I just did day 4 of SSU (strength) and looved it!! While I did, I was reflecting on how interesting that so many musical theater geeks become fitness fans 🙂

  47. Alycia @ Fit n Fresh on May 26, 2010 at 2:33 pm

God I love the Maxx! I need to see if mine has one of those sweet shakers – and your macaroons look amazing as always! Whoever wins will be a lucky eater!

  48. Jordana on May 26, 2010 at 2:39 pm

Cheesecake! I love it so much I had it for my wedding cake. I’ve actually found Millet bread at my commissary, although I’m not a huge fan…sorry…haha!

  49. Laura J. on May 26, 2010 at 3:00 pm

My go-to desserts would probably be cheesecake or cake with (real-not the store brand crap) buttercream frosting (I’m a corner piece of the cake girl). Gaaa, now I want a piece!

I did Day 2 of the Summer Shape Up today!! So good! I was a sweaty beast at the end!! That’s how you know you’ve had an awesome workout 🙂 Thanks again for being so dedicated to your bloggy and it’s readers.

    • Fitnessista on May 26, 2010 at 3:37 pm

Hi Gina! I have a Fitness question I’m hoping you can help with! So I’m a runner, currently training for a marathon, so long distances + speed work + higher intensity runs and I’m a vegetarian. My doctor has me taking iron pills because my I have a pretty serious iron deficiency. Do you have any recommendations for high iron vegetarian friendly foods that I can eat that will also help fuel a workout pre and post?

    Thanks so much!!!

    • Fitnessista on May 26, 2010 at 3:36 pm

pre: i would do whole-grain bread or cereal with milk of choice and 1/2 banana
post: the other half a banana with lots of spinach, protein powder and milk of choice
spinach, whole grains, lentils, chickpeas, dried figs and apricots are great vegetarian sources of iron 🙂
