Friday Faves

Hi hi! Happy weekend to ya. What are you up to? The girls and I are having a Friday Fun Day – going to the Children’s Museum and then hitting up the pool with some friends. We’re officially done with camps and I can’t believe that school starts so soon! The rest of the weekend will be the usual shenanigans: lots of time with the fam, catching up on stuff around the house (I’m finally picking a paint color for the dreaded red wall), and work stuff. I have something exciting (*cough* leggings *cough*) that will be launching August 8, so keep your eyes peeled for that. 😉

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my faves from the week and around the web. I always love to hear what you’re loving, too, so please shout out a fave in the comments section below.

Life/random:

A momcation! I shared this one Instagram and so many friends said they used it to casually hint to their husbands that they could use a little R&R. I was feeling worn down after some rough nights of sleep around here. With the Pilot’s job transition, it has really shaken up our routine, and unfortunately, sleep has been affected. [Sometimes, I hesitate to write about sleep because I undoubtedly receive a few “You’re a bad parent! Make your kids sleep!” comments. Our kids are well-behaved, kind, polite, little loves, and sometimes they don’t sleep so well. I’ll take that any day of the week over a kid who sleeps peacefully through the night but is a jerk to other people.] Anyway, I was a walking zombie after being awake since 3:30am for about 3 days, and Tom booked me a room at the Lodge so I could catch up on some zzzzs.

It. was. everything.

Hotel wakeup

I drank red wine out of a Yeti cup, snuggled on the couch in a blanket reading for 3 blissful hours, and then slept for 10. I woke up to the sun peeking through the clouds, and felt like a new human being. Cheers to doing what we need to do to take care of our selves so we can give to others, and cheers to the husbands out there who sometimes know exactly what we need.

Celebrating Nani’s birthday! The fam came over for a little birthday feast and celebration. Kyle grilled steaks and asparagus,

Grilled feast

madre brought amazing potatoes, and I made the usual enormous cheese board,

and Uncle E’s famous pasta salad.

We drank margaritas, spent the evening taking turns holding baby August and watching one of the kids’ many performances for us, and ate cake and cupcakes. It was perfect.

Duolingo. Does anyone else use this fun tool? It’s a great way to practice another language and has been an excellent opportunity to brush up my español. (Growing up, I always did the thing where family would speak to me in Spanish and I’d answer in English. I understand it perfectly, and minored in it in college, but don’t practice speaking very frequently.) You can follow friends through the app, and it’s always good inspiration to practice for a little while each day.

Fitness:

I took at class here at Sumit Yoga in Tucson, and LOVED it. It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a really hot 60-minute yoga class. (Usually if I practice yoga it’s slightly warm and 60 minutes.) About two of the class blocks were Bikram-inspired, and it felt good to go back to poses I used to love so dearly. (In a weird way. Like I enjoy having zero amount of dry clothes on my body since I’m entirely drenched in sweat and struggling to hold poses for 60 seconds, but it felt so amazing when it was over.)

I have a Groupon for this month, so I’m excited to try more of their classes.

So many great pieces still in stock for the Nordstrom Sale, like these cozy joggers, my fave leggings ever, this everyday v-neck, this gorgeous pendant (perfect holiday gift), the best pajamas, and my very fave bra. Some of my top picks from this years’ sale have sold out, so I’m happy that they still have a variety of sizes in stock for some of my beloved staples.

Husband of the YEAR! Also I’m sorry what, who has the nerve to tell you you’re a “bad parent” because your kids occasionally don’t sleep?! Babies be babies, kids be kids, and it’s really dumb for someone to say that. You’re awesome 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 26, 2019 at 11:18 am

haha thanks friend. i’m like there’s seriously not much i can do about it when this happens!
and yes, hubby won some major points

Duolingo is so fun! I’ve been doing it to supplement a weekly 2-hour Spanish class at a local language school. It’s great for learning new vocabulary, but my favorite part is the bizarre sentences they use sometimes, because they are unforgettable. Have you seen sentences like these? “Mis caballos collecionan dientes” or “Aquel hombre tiene tantas orejas” What??

Also, happy birthday to your grandma! She’s adorable with her tiara 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 26, 2019 at 11:17 am

yes! some of the sentences are so weird! i think it’s amusing when they make me create sentences and i say it the way normal people would say it in conversation, but then they want me to add all of these extra unnecessary parts

“Make your kids sleep.” Um, ok! What helpful advice! People are ridiculous. Happy birthday to your sweet Nana! And I’m so envious of your mom-cation. This is a great idea for future gift ideas 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 26, 2019 at 11:16 am

OK, your cheesboards always look SO amazing. Have you ever done a post on how to put together a bomb-ass charcuterie board like the one pictured? Looks so amazing and what a perfect way to set the tune for a dinner party. Cheers!

    • Fitnessista on July 26, 2019 at 11:16 am

hi! here’s one i put together with my usual method: https://fitnessista.com/full-day-eats-make-cheese-boards/
i find that if you make piles of each thing and the fill the gaps, it usually works out pretty well! they’re my favorite things to make for dinner parties 🙂

  7. Mary on July 26, 2019 at 11:20 am

Ha I can’t believe people would say you are a bad mom because your kids don’t sleep well. Ridiculous! It is obvious you are a very loving mom, just from reading your blog.

    • Fitnessista on July 27, 2019 at 5:33 pm

thank you, friend. yes, sometimes people come out of the woodworks with the weirdest things

My Mother’s Day present this year was a night at a hotel and a massage from the hotel spa. Absolute heaven! The best gift you can give this mama is the gift of sleep haha.

Happy Birthday to your Nani! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 27, 2019 at 5:32 pm

i couldn’t agree more! the BEST gift

  9. Teri on July 26, 2019 at 3:02 pm

Hi Gina-hearing your stories of sleep struggles certainly takes me back to those days. Our youngest son put us through our paces and now that he is 22 and working full time-I crack up when he goes to bed at 8:30. Hang in there it does get better! 😉

    • Fitnessista on July 27, 2019 at 5:33 pm

so you’re saying one day she will sleep?! gives me hope haha

  12. Grace on July 26, 2019 at 6:11 pm

I’m craving all the cheese now, plus chocolate covered pretzels. I loved the link you included about what our dogs can teach us. It was a craaazy day at work and people in general were just annoying the crap out of me today. It was a sweet reminder to slow down and think about all the people I’m grateful for and need to show up for. My pup is so joyful just going for a car ride or swimming in the lake. Can’t help but smile at that pure excitement!

    • Fitnessista on July 27, 2019 at 5:34 pm

they love you and are always happy/excited no matter what. dogs are the best <3

“You’re a bad parent! Make your kids sleep!”
Eep! What a horrible thing for people to say (or think!) You can’t make a kids sleep! I can barely keep my toddler in his room TO PLAY before the alarm goes off. It is funny because my husband complains about how our kid hates sleep, but he is truthfully the best case scenario of non-sleeping. He comes in our room wakes me up, and usher him back to his bed, and walk back. I just need it to eventually stop lol

  14. Charlene on July 28, 2019 at 7:57 pm

I wish I knew how to make myself sleep let alone anyone else

    • Jen on July 29, 2019 at 4:50 am

This comment is the best! Sometimes I feel like I need to sleep train myself. Typing this as I’m wide awake after a 4:15a feeding. Baby is back to sleep but I’m not!

Random question, but what shoes are you wearing in the photo with the blue dress? I’ve been looking for something like those that are comfy! Thanks. 🙂
