Hopped off the plane at LAX

(โ€œWith a dream and my cardiganโ€ฆ..โ€ Thanks to the Pilot, I have a Miley Cyrus song stuck in my head)

Hi friends! We just landed in LA ๐Ÿ™‚

 us

Thank you so much for your sweet comments about the trip and tips for places to hit up while weโ€™re here. Weโ€™re super excited and are very stoked to share the shenanigans with you.

Per usual, we were slackers and waited to pack until this morning.

 clothes

The good news is that I found a dress last night! My aunt sells designer clothes and vintage on eBay, so I went shopping in her closet last night ๐Ÿ˜‰

This morning, we overslept, each munched an egg burrito with salsa,

I grabbed a b-fast cookie for the plane ride, and we headed to the airport.

When we got there, we had a fun little conversation about this thing:

escalator

I think I may have mentioned it on the blog before, but I HATE escalators. Iโ€™m totally fine going down, but going up scares the bejeezus out of me. It all started when I was 7 and went up the FAO Schwartz escalator in Las Vegas by myself.. ever since then, I havenโ€™t been a fan.

We were trying to go up to ticketing to get our boarding passes and hereโ€™s how the convo went down:

Me: Letโ€™s go this way. (Walking toward elevator)

Pilot: Why donโ€™t we take the escalator?

Me: Letโ€™s take the elevator, I donโ€™t trust that thing.. itโ€™s broken.

Pilot: Itโ€™s not broken, just not moving. We can carry our suitcases up.

Me: No. It could start moving at anytime! I donโ€™t trust it when itโ€™sโ€ฆ sedentary.

Pilot: You mean when itโ€™s stairs????

We ended up taking the elevator ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone else have a random phobia??

Thank goodness, the plane ride was uneventful and bump free,

plane

and I enjoyed my b-fast cookie, a SELF magazine and a coconut water picked up at the airport. It definitely helped to keep me from feeling dehydrated.

We just landed and are about to catch a cab to the hotel ๐Ÿ˜€ See ya later with some adventures!

xoxo

Haha that song is the first thing that popped into my head when I read the title. Hope you guys have a great time in LA–I’ve never been, so I can’t wait to live vicariously through you ๐Ÿ˜‰

    have a great time!

i can’t walk across those grates (idk what to call them) on sidewalks. i’m always afraid that one will be loose one day and i’ll fall through. i went out of my way to walk around one the other day and had a random stranger laugh at me ๐Ÿ˜‰

  4. Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing on April 12, 2011 at 2:41 pm

LOL! “You mean when it’s stairs?” ๐Ÿ˜€ I always have to play out the scene from Elf when we encounter escalators. My husband is only mildly amused. I think the more accurate term is “embarrassed.” Bahaha! Have a great time!

  5. Margaret on April 12, 2011 at 2:42 pm

I hate going down escalators. I am absolutely sure they are going to swallow me. I am better about going up them but still not a big fan. My mom is terrified of elevators so between the two of us we take a lot of stairs.

  6. Kari on April 12, 2011 at 2:45 pm

I (kind of) get your fear of escalators…because I am PETRIFIED of flying. I have to take anti-anxiety prescription pills to even think about getting on a plane, and I have to take the maximum dose. Good thing is, I don’t let it effect my life and I still go on trips that involve planes – but I better have a window seat over the wing. I will be pay TOP DOLLAR to make sure of it! ๐Ÿ™‚

    How fun ๐Ÿ™‚
I live in LA! Can’t wait to hear about your day!

  9. Ashley on April 12, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Coconut water on an airplane is genius!! I always feel like crap after flying. It’s so weird that we’ve flown together before! haha I can’t think of any random phobias…but I’m sure I have one!

  10. Jessica on April 12, 2011 at 2:46 pm

I am afriad of escalators b/c of Rescue 911. That little kids’ sweatshirt got stuck, and he turned all blue… it was traumatizing. I keep both eyes on them the whole way up and ALWAYS..make sure your shoes are tied.

  11. Candice on April 12, 2011 at 2:47 pm

I use to be scared of getting in elevators! when I was small we ended up getting stuck in one for over an hour.. So I’m ALWAYS a little hesitate about them.. Have fun in la!

  12. Alana on April 12, 2011 at 2:47 pm

I have an escalator phobia too, when I was younger, I fell head first down an escalator and even to this day, I have trouble getting on one that goes down. Also, I will NEVER go on a sedentary escalator. I thought I was the only one who had the “irrational” fear that it could start up at any time. YAY! I’m not alone. Have fun in LA!

  13. Alicia on April 12, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Glad you found a dress! Have a good time =)

  14. SmileCrave on April 12, 2011 at 2:50 pm

Love your post and that you’re blogging while there!! I have a fear of other things… ELEVATORS lol!!

  15. Chelsea on April 12, 2011 at 2:51 pm

Have fun!!! We never use the escalators we always take the stairs…especially on a long day of traveling when you really need to move your legs!

  16. Allison @ Food For Healing on April 12, 2011 at 2:51 pm

lol “..when its stairs”. Best line ever!
can’t wait to hear more from you and how LA is treating you, i’m jealous.
i hate going up escalators too though, just feels weird.

    • Nicole on April 12, 2011 at 2:54 pm

I clearly screwed that link up.

      • Amanda on April 12, 2011 at 4:49 pm

Yes Nicole! that was the only thing going through my head when I was reading this post (and every day at the metro).

    • Beth on April 12, 2011 at 5:15 pm

Me too! And I’m terrified of water, esp. the ocean but even so far as drinking water in the dark, I don’t really get it… it’s very real to me tho even tho i know it’s ridiculous. But it’s along the same lines as my fear of drains, I think it’s all related somehow ๐Ÿ˜‰ I can’t even close my eyes in the bathtub because of that dang drain. I don’t swim over drains in [well-lit] pools, or go near those cleaner filter things on the sides :p

  17. jenna on April 12, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Can’t wait to hear about your fun times in LA!! I’m glad the pilot is there to enjoy the fun too! ๐Ÿ™‚ have a blast!

  18. Sarah on April 12, 2011 at 2:53 pm

That reminds me of my fav Mitch Hedburg routine, that my bf and I always repeat when we pass one. “Escalators don’t break, they just become stairs. Please excuse the convinence.” Haha!
    Have fun!

  19. Dani on April 12, 2011 at 2:56 pm

HAHAHA this post reminds me of this Mitch Bedberg quote: โ€œAn escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You would never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.โ€

  20. Erin on April 12, 2011 at 2:59 pm

I’m sorta ok with escalators, but I DO NOT trust those moving sidewalks! I always feel like I’m going to fall at the end.

  21. MMiller on April 12, 2011 at 2:59 pm

My sister has some strange “fears”…She won’t drive in the rain, of fog, or snow! If she sees clouds building, she will pull off the road and either wait it out…or get a hotel room! Sometimes when the trip is a long one day trip, it may take her 3 days or more! And if she is the passenger, she will make the driver pull off too! Bribes, threats whatever it takes! It is really beyond a phobia!

  22. Maria on April 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm

have fun in California!! I hate escalators as well. When I was younger, I always thought it was fun to sit on them and then get up at the last minute. Little dare devil I was ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, one time I didn’t make it up fast enought and my butt got pinched pretty hard. Ever since that, they’ve been my least fave thing.

  24. Carrie on April 12, 2011 at 3:03 pm

I have a stair phobia. I’m afraid of heights, and climbing down large stairs–where it’s quite easy for me to go ass over head/falling to my death–semi cripples me with fear. And I keep going to Europe where there are all these castles and fortresses with the scariest stairs ever! Will never learn, lol.

Also, I want to fly to LA for no other reason than to sing that Miley line. ๐Ÿ™‚

  25. Katie~ Run For The Bikini on April 12, 2011 at 3:07 pm

I’ve always wanted to try running up the down escalator just to see if I could, possibly if I ever find an escalator in a low traffic area I will go for it ๐Ÿ˜€ Dress looks adorable from what I can see in the pic ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on April 12, 2011 at 3:13 pm

My aunt sells designer clothes and vintage on eBay = THAT is a major score! Wow, I’d be shopping in her closet all the time ๐Ÿ™‚

The fact that you just landed but somehow still are blogging about it all…you are impressive! Travel days, travel, new cities, airports are all filled with craziness and hectic times…you’re amazing to be blogging right upon landing. Hopefully you had airplane wi-fi!

Anyway, hope you two have FUN!!

  27. courtney @ cupcakedynamite on April 12, 2011 at 3:19 pm

now that song is in my head! ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m always frightened the escalator will turn on while I’m walking up/down too!

  28. Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife on April 12, 2011 at 3:27 pm

ooooh have fun! I am going to have that song stuck in my head now too…..and your phobia is pretty funny, but totally legit. I have a phobia of spiders-if that counts?? And lucky you to go shopping in your aunt’s closet-rock on! Can’t wait to see it!

  29. Ashley on April 12, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I think i am more afraid of elevators and getting stuck in that tiny box! Especially when they have no windows(which is almost all):/

  30. Jessica @ I Don't Eat Standing Up on April 12, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I am beyond terrified of escalators! I really hate going down, but going up is pretty bad too. I will completely walk out of my way to avoid escalators.

  31. Sarah @TheExPat Bride on April 12, 2011 at 3:48 pm

I hate escalators too! Probably because I once tried to run up one that goes down. Ended up getting my flipflop caught in between the steps and skinned my whole leg. Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear. lol

  32. Ashley @ Feeding Ashley on April 12, 2011 at 4:00 pm

Oooh I can’t wait to see the pictures and hear about all the shenanigans. I don’t think I have any random phobias, but yours made me giggle.

  33. Chelsea on April 12, 2011 at 4:34 pm

    ahh vita coco! yummmm ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Holly @ The Runny Egg on April 12, 2011 at 4:44 pm

Well I’m scared of bugs and all that, but that isn’t super strange (right, I hope???) ๐Ÿ™‚

    Have a great time!

  35. Lauren on April 12, 2011 at 4:45 pm

I’m the same way! I once saw an episode of Rescue 911 where a little boy got his arm caught in an escalator and I’ve been terrified of them ever since.

  36. Dana Marie on April 12, 2011 at 4:45 pm

that looks like a nice suitcase – is it one of those swivel ones?

  37. Elizabeth on April 12, 2011 at 4:46 pm

I feel so validated – I have a no-down-escalators rule and I am a totally inappropriate level of happy to know that I am not alone. No horror story, they just make me really dizzy. Same for moving sidewalks at airports.

  38. Mo on April 12, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Ok – you’re going to love this. I hate those revolving doors. I was never good at jumping rope when others are doing the “turning”. I can’t judge the right time to “get in” so to speak. Yeah, it’s funny. Have a blast you two.

  39. Shanna, Like Banana on April 12, 2011 at 4:47 pm

I want that dress and am desperately in need of one..can you pretty please email me at shannamccord@gmail.com with the ebay link?

  40. Amy@purewellnessamy on April 12, 2011 at 4:48 pm

glad you got to LA safe and sound…I don’t want to sound desperate, but…was the winner of the dehydrator selected yesterday? have a fun trip!

  41. Tulika on April 12, 2011 at 4:49 pm

Hahaha–I’m also afraid of escalators (of going down, but I’m totally fine going up!). Hope you have a fun trip!!

  42. Katy @ A Healthy Shot on April 12, 2011 at 4:50 pm

Thanks, now I have Miley stuck in my head also. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I can’t wait to see the dress!! And also all about your fun in LA! I’ve only ever been in LAX.. never the actual city.

Woo, LA! I am so excited to see pictures from this launch party. So, SO fun!

  44. Kimberley on April 12, 2011 at 5:16 pm

Hope you have so much fun ! ๐Ÿ™‚ I HATE escalators and totally see where you are coming from!!

  45. Jen G. on April 12, 2011 at 5:19 pm

I feel that way about escalators too! I was on the DC metro on spring break as a kid during rush hour, and some kid at the top got his shoelace stuck. Imagine a packed escalator of people all leaning backwards hoping not to fall… scary!

Since then, I have actually lived in DC and some of their escalators are especially terrifying. I white-knuckle it the whole time.

  46. Little Bookworm on April 12, 2011 at 5:35 pm

Glad you arrived safely! Hope you have fun at the launch party!

I used to be terrified to take the escalators going down. Going up I was fine, but going down freaked me out. I once stood at the top of the escalator at the mall screaming and crying when my mom tried to force me to take it. We ended up taking the elevator after a couple minutes of my tantrum. I grew out of my fear and then in college I watched my roommate fall down the escalator at the Adams Morgan metro stop in DC. Fear is back!

Do you have any issues bringing breakfast cookies on the plane? It’s not liquid, so I guess it’s cool, but you never know! I love b’fast cookies and have gotten ou of the habit of making them. Might have to just make one tonight!
