Juice for the Sickies

Heyyyyy 😀 How are ya? Hope you’re had a wonderful day! Thanks for all of the get-well-soon tips 🙂

It’s been LAZY over here in the cold/virus/whatever house.

The puppies have been happy to partake in the rest and recovery day 😉

Little nuggets 😀

I cleaned up around the casa and started to learn the dances from ZIN, which I signed up for last week.

017

ZIN = Zumba Instructors Network

Every other month I’ll get a CD and a DVD with choreography for the songs. I’m really excited to get some new stuff.. especially since I’ll be teaching again when I move in September—SO STOKED 😀

Snackage:

larabar

A new flavor!

The verdict? Pretty amazeballs. I still think I like fruity Larabars more than chocolaty ones, though. This sounds weird because I’m a chocolate fiend, but something about dates and chocolate together doesn’t taste quite right.

After the pilot had carried around his tissue box and hacked and sneezed away at work, he came home to rest for a little while during his lunch break.

Juice for the sickies:

green juice

Each juice had:

-1 apple

-1 pear

-1/2 cucumber

-huge handful of spinach

-1/2 t spirulina

After he chugged it down,

Me: “How was the algae"?”
Pilot: “You little punk.”

He liked it 😀

I made him an organic turkey and cheese sandwich + 2 cucarachas (dates)

sandwich

My lunch was quinoa (cooked in vegetable oil) with kale, grape tomatoes, Nama shoyu, Garlic Gold, cayenne and sea salt

quinoa

We both had hot peppermint tea, too.

It was nice to see his seksi [albeit sick] face during the day 🙂

So, quite a few of ya’ll asked about my review for the SCW Mania conference, so here are the pros and the cons.

LOVED:

The hotel

hotel

The hotel was perfect—nice and cold, beautiful, free WiFi, lots of dining options, huge rooms for each workshop

The classes

glutes guns and guts

I got to take SO many fun classes and got a lot of new ideas to utilize in my own classes. They had a fabulous variety of lectures and classes to participate in—I had a hard time choosing when I requested my schedule.

Some re-caps:

BodyJam, Restore the Core and Steptonic

Glutes, Guns and Guts

Zumba, Flirty Girl and Steplicious

An entire day of Zumba

CEC credits

The CEC credits totally sold me for this one—including the Zumba cert on Thursday, I was able to get 22 CEC credits for AFAA

The instructors

fg

The quality of instructors at the conference blew my mind. I was so fortunate to learn from some BIG names in the fitness industry, who each taught with passion and enthusiasm.

Didn’t really love:

The expo was kind of weak

expo

While they did an awesome job of having a variety of vendors, I think there was something to be desired. I did pick up some sweet Zumba gear, though 🙂

That’s my only complaint!

Was it worth it?

Heck to the yes. It cost $210 and I would do it again in a second. If any of ya’ll need to get CEC credits for your group fitness certifications, check out to see if SCW has a Mania conference somewhere nearby.

Well I’m off to work to tell a client that I’m sick (and give her a cardio plan), then back to the casa to make curry soup for dinner.

Have a lovely night <3

Gina

Something to talk about: How many other fitness professionals are in the house?? If you don’t teach or train, would you ever want to? Or is taking classes more fun for you? I LOVE to teach but I also love to be a student and take classes from other instructors 😀

Something to think: If it doesn’t reach a level 7 out of 10 on the problem scale, forget about it. The pilot told me those wise words while I was yelling about a truck being in my way on the freeway yesterday –I’m kind of a nervous highway driver… I sing or yell, it’s really pleasant haha- and I said “Why didn’t you tell me that 6 years ago?” It would have saved me SO much stress. So, give it a whirl. If it’s not a level 7, forget about it 🙂

I definitely love the Pilot’s advice…if it’s not a seven forget about it. YESSSS!!! 😀 definitely a new and much improved perspective. SWEET!

I don’t teach or train, but I would consider personal training.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  2. Nicole on August 2, 2010 at 6:31 pm

I love that the pups are sleeping in almost the exact same position! Too cute!

My new fave Larabar is the Cinnamon Roll…too bad it’s the one with the highest calories, I think 🙁 Oh, that cinnamon-y goodness though!

I think I am finally convinced that I want to take the fitness instructor plunge! I’m still trying to get my butt into the shape I used to be in, but if I still have the bug in the fall, I’m going for it! Probably group fitness & personal trainer. Any advice on which to do first? Your blog has definitely helped me make up my mind, so thank you!

  3. Kristina on August 2, 2010 at 6:33 pm

I love how both pups sleep in the donut shape – with their feet sticking out… SO cute 🙂

I am going to use the pilot’s advice – that is EXCELLENT advice… especially while driving, but also with many other “obstacles” I’ve been freaking out about today 🙁

thanks, pilot !! great perspective !

  4. Heather (Heather's Dish) on August 2, 2010 at 6:41 pm

i’m a trainer! well, i was, but am still certified 🙂 i would definitely recommend becoming a group instructor over training though…training became too much about sales and not enough about training in my experience, but teaching group classes is usually a lot more fun and a lot more about getting people to workout!

  5. Holly @ couchpotatoathlete on August 2, 2010 at 6:55 pm

I would love to be a trainer or a fitness instructor. I love exercise and I would love to share that with other people!

I love The Pilot’s 7 out of 10 rule. I too need to realize when something isn’t that big of a deal and not stress about it. Why bother getting worked up over something?

  6. Kathryn on August 2, 2010 at 7:00 pm

Thats great advice (and something I really needed right now!)

    feel better!!

  7. Anne on August 2, 2010 at 7:16 pm

I hope you and the pilot get better soon! That’s funny that you mentioned the fitness instructor thing because it was something that recently crossed my mind. It’s not something I’d do full time, but maybe as a side job? By the way, how does one go about getting certified? I’m not looking to be a personal trainer, just group instruction.

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 7:42 pm

      check out afaa.com 🙂

  8. stephreyn85 on August 2, 2010 at 7:20 pm

not sure if anyone suggested one of these bad boys yet for the sickies:

    http://www.walgreens.com/store/catalog/Cough-and-Cold/NASAFLO-Neti-Pot/ID=prod3356564-product?V=G&ec=frgl_&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=sku3355404

Try a neti pot! I know it looks bizzaro, but I swear it works. Its basically sticking a saline solution up your nose, but any time I get sick this cleans my sinuses/throat out. The bf is a med student and he was skeptical…when he got sick I finally got him to do it and he’s a believer now haha. You can get them at any drug store usually!! Feel better 🙂

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 7:41 pm

i’ve heard of them but they freak me out!!

      • stephreyn85 on August 2, 2010 at 9:20 pm

make the pilot do it! it would make for a FUNNY video to post…hehe

        • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 9:30 pm

i just asked him and he said
“the answer to that, of course, is NO”
          hahah

          • Kimberly on August 3, 2010 at 12:31 am

I can not stand water in my nose, but when I had an awful sinus infection a few years back I tried a Neti Pot and now I use it when ever I get sick. (which hasn’t happen in forever since I began eating mostly organic foods) It really does help and is very easy to use.

I also swear by Boiron Homeopathic Remedies. My favorites are Cold Calm and Sabadil for allergies and Sinusalia for sinus congestion and pain. They do not have side effects or make you drowsy and can be taken with other medications.

            Feel better soon!

  9. April @ Crazy Fabulous Life on August 2, 2010 at 7:23 pm

That’s some great advice from the pilot! And I love that you snuck algae into his juce 😀

  10. Rhea (Greek Feaster) on August 2, 2010 at 7:28 pm

What whaaaaaaaaaaaat. Why is one of the juices green and one gray? Do my eyes betray me?!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 7:40 pm

hahah no i was just playing with the settings on the camera 🙂

  11. Dana in KC on August 2, 2010 at 7:44 pm

I have often thought about becoming a trainer or class instructor. I think I just need to take the leap.

  12. Laura on August 2, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Your little furbabies are adorable! They are doing the shrimpie! Well at least that is what we call it in our house 🙂

    Hope you feel better soon!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 8:01 pm

the shrimpie! i love that! they definitely look like little shrimps 🙂

  13. Laury @ thefitnesdish on August 2, 2010 at 8:08 pm

OMG!!! I need to get my greedy fingers on the Choc Chip Cookie Dough Larabar ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The babies are adorables 🙂

I’m the only fitness profession in mi casa, been a trainer for 8 years, got my group fintess cert way back when, but never got into aerobics classes..I teach boot camp–was a dancer for 10 years…the EARLY years, like ages 3 to 13, LOL…but I love Zumba, they just don’t offer it anywhere at times I am free 🙁 I thought, when I took it, that I could totally teach it if I put in the time…so not intimidating like all the other choreographed classes out there, and it’s SUPER fun!

I hope you guys feel better! Good luck with the Zumba cert! The conference looks great, Im debating going to one in Miami for ECA Thrive–classes are very similar to the ones you went to–but idk if I wanna put out all the funds to fly there. SCW is coming to Philly in Feb., not sure if I want to wait that long, I need to get some CEC’s before then, so it’s a tough call!

    Get well soon!

  14. Keri on August 2, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Feel better!! I got my group fitness cert last November and just recently got up the courage to actually audition for a job…and it went well! I will be put on the sub list and need to practice cuing 🙂 I also reallllly want to go to eh ECA Thrive conference in Miami but the bf is not having it. I figure I have a couple of months to beg 🙂

  15. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on August 2, 2010 at 8:12 pm

I’m not a proffesional fitness person at all but I don’t think I would enjoy teaching. I like being in classes, though. The one-on-one attention is great and it allows you to correct things that you may not have noticed if you were just working out alone.

I hope you and the Pilot feel better soon! Being sick is no fun 🙁

  16. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on August 2, 2010 at 8:18 pm

Haha the pilot is such a goof! I was just thinking as I was chewing my Jocolot Larabar today that chocolate and dates (&&mint!) just don’t go together. I like the fruity ones too.

  17. Suzi on August 2, 2010 at 8:23 pm

oh, i LOVE being a ZIN! Teaching so many classes I don’t have time to come up with all my own stuff so I love being able to take one of the routines form the DVDs and switch it up until it works for me. On that introductory DVD, my classes all love La Batidora (the version the ZES does), it really gets the heart rate up there too! I also like la negra tomasa that the ZES does and merengue/hip hop song (la hora de bailar or something like that?) and the willy chorino (sp?) song too. Heck I like most of the ones on that DVD!

    Feel better!!

  19. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on August 2, 2010 at 8:47 pm

What great advice from the Pilot! Definitely going to keep that one in mind.

Your photos from the conference are making me SO excited for the Can Fit Pro one I’m going to in a couple of weeks. Like you said, CEC’s are definitely one of the major attractions, but I just love going to learn about new classes and trying out new things. I love being an instructor, but being a student is great too. I’ve definitely got a lot to learn (especially in BodyJam – I really have zero skills in that class!)

  20. alison on August 2, 2010 at 8:54 pm

In my head I think I’d be a good instructor, but knowing that, as a novice, I’ll most definitely stink at it first makes me very scared to take the leap. The perfectionist in me wants to be perfect the first time and I know that is not how it works.

I hope you both start feeling better soon!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 8:56 pm

i taught dance for 5 years and still goofed up my first time teaching– you get better with practice 🙂 if you really want to do it, go for it!!! 😀

  21. Sana on August 2, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Colds are the worst! You married sucha smart man 🙂 I will deff use that advice!!!

  22. Anya @ Fitness & Sunshine on August 2, 2010 at 8:55 pm

The 7/10 is SUCH good advice! I’ll keep it in mind. 🙂

So funny that you put spirulina in the pilot’s smoothie.

      heh heh

  23. Laughter-Loving Stacy on August 2, 2010 at 9:09 pm

That convention looked really cool! And being a trainer is something I would love to do. Whether it’s a personal or group trainer. I love taking fitness classes, challenging myself to the extreme, and helping people reach there goal would be amazing. I just don’t have the money and the time as a senior in college to take the classes. Maybe one day. 🙂

  24. Ilana on August 2, 2010 at 9:20 pm

I recently decided I want to become a personal trainer – I’m aiming for my Pilates certification right now but somewhere down the line, I’d like to do a lot more!

  25. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on August 2, 2010 at 9:21 pm

I have taught since 2001! I love going to events, with the most recent being the Les Mills Quarterly’s – those are so cool. But before Les Mills, I taught yoga, pilates, kickboxing, step, and cardio aerobics and spinning since college. I think spinning and kickboxing are my long time favorite. I like to take classes form other instructors, but they have to be HARD core. I hate wasting my time otherwise!

    • Fitnessista on August 2, 2010 at 9:28 pm

i’m the same way.. it better be a killer class- or i leave 🙂

  26. Cyndi @ Weightless Life on August 2, 2010 at 9:32 pm

I’m definitely going to keep the Pilot’s advice in mind next time I get stressed out at work. Being a fitness instructor seems like it would be fun, but I’m painfully shy in front of crowds, so I think I’ll stick to the back of the room. Maybe in the next life, LOL.

  27. Jodie on August 2, 2010 at 10:02 pm

I train as well as teach Pilates. I enjoy taking classes from other instructors. It is nice to have someelse kick your butt sometimes. Feel better soon.

  28. Megan (Braise The Roof) on August 2, 2010 at 10:11 pm

You are the most motivated sickie I know! How thoughtful of you to put together lunch for your husband when you’re not feeling well. 🙂

  29. Rachel on August 2, 2010 at 10:26 pm

LOL, “You little punk”. Awesome. And the nuggets! I love seeing my two boys (cats) curled up sleeping. The quinoa salad looks fab, will definitely try that. Feel better soon! Also, Neti pots have been used for a very long time, they work wonders.

  30. Rachael on August 2, 2010 at 10:32 pm

I’m a yoga teacher, but I haven’t taught in a studio since right after college – I love, love teaching, and want to incorporate free classes as part of the “Free Skool” we run out of our house in Asheville – we do cooking classes, natural building, crafts, fermentation, writing and the like, and I’d love to get a community flow weekly deal going!

  31. Maya on August 2, 2010 at 10:35 pm

I loved what the husband said about rating problems! I am so going to remember that! I tend to freak out about the little things,

Love the pups all curled up. 🙂 Feel better soon sickies.

I just got certified as a personal trainer recently and had an interview today. I have to go back week to do a mock training session with the manager, I’m sooooo nervous I hope I do ok and don’t choke!! Luckily they gave me a one week pass so I can get familiar with the gym layout and equitment and my boyfriend is going to let me practice on him even tho he hates working out. I definatly want to expand to other areas like classes and nutrition consultation in the future but right now I don’t want take on too much at once.

    • Fitnessista on August 3, 2010 at 9:24 am

good luck!!! you can do it 🙂

  34. Dianna on August 2, 2010 at 10:43 pm

Love the pilot’s advice. Definatley something I will use in the future.

I hope you both start feeling better. Try the neti pot. I will freak you up the first time, but it does work. I swear it is magic.

I am Jazzercise instructor. I am certified to teach group fitness and personal train. I love teaching class but I do enjoy taking classes from other instructors and getting ideas for my classes.

I am looking into the next SWC conference it looks amazing!

  35. Megan @ Healthy Hoggin' on August 2, 2010 at 11:08 pm

That cookie dough Larabar looks awesome– but I’m the same way, I usually don’t care for the chocolate-flavored Larabars!

I’d love to be a personal trainer, and have been considering getting certified recently! The only problem is my full-time job is pretty hectic right now, and I don’t plan on giving it up! So, I’m biding my time until things are calmer…

I LOVE taking group fitness classes, too! I love the vibe, and sometimes it’s just the kick-in-the-booty I need when my motivation is flagging!

  36. stephanie@Avocado Nation on August 2, 2010 at 11:21 pm

That’s really good advice! My boyfriend said something similar yesterday. I was moping because I felt fat and he asked me if being sad was really going to help the situation. It was like someone had turned on the lights, no one had ever said it that way before. Amazing how little comments can really change the way you think.

  37. denise on August 3, 2010 at 12:00 am

Between teaching classes, training clients and three kids – I find it almost impossible to go to classes on my own. I am very picky when I do though. Just found Zumba in my area – hoping to try it out this week!

  39. christina on August 3, 2010 at 12:42 am

That is AMAZING advice. My mom always says…”pick your battles, honey” because I’ve got a short fuse with people sometimes, but that is a fantastic way to think about it.

  40. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on August 3, 2010 at 12:57 am

Glad you’re rocking the garlic. I HATE garlic so give that advice to people but cannot heed my own advice on that one 🙂

Also ginger, cinnamon, cumin, all very healing herbs/spices.

Love the Pilot’s advice. Scott is also very cool under pressure. As he says, if he doesnt let some of the stress of business and life roll off him, he’d be dead of a heart attack by age 60 like all the other men in his family.

I became a yoga teacher 10 long years ago 🙂 b/c I fell in love w/ it and wanted to teach and life a life that included tons of yoga! I go in cycles with whether I like to teach or take; there are pros and cons to both. Pet peeve is when the teacher sucks and I feel like I am wasting my time and would have been better off doing my own solo practice, but it happens and I get over it 🙂

Very similar to blogging…after reading blogs and thinking that bitch can’t cook or doesnt know what she’s talking about…I started my own LOL. There would be pros to just being a reader and not a blogger too, like fitness teaching, but yeah, I’d rather teach and blog, than just take and read 🙂

    FEEL BETTER!!!!!!!

    🙂

Sorry you still aren’t feeling all that well.

After this next kiddo I plan on getting involved in teaching group fitness classes (would love to do spin or bootcamp/circuit classes) and/or personal training. We’ll see where things take me though.

And LOVE that if it’s not a 7, forget about it idea. I have a similar approach where I tell myself if it won’t matter or have any importance in my life a year (or even a month) from now, then I need to let it go.

Lately I’ve been toying with the idea of teaching classes or doing personal training as a part-time job while I’m still in school, but I haven’t really been considering it too seriously yet.

Fantastic review of SCW Mania! Thank you! I’m a fitness instructor as well and I’ve been debating going to a conference for some time now. It sounds like a quick, educational and fun way to get those AFAA credits. Like yourself, I love taking other people’s fitness classes. It challenges my body and gives me insight into new moves, cues and other teaching styles.

I hope you get well soon, girlie! 🙂
