Reader’s Request: Go-to Gadgets

Hey Gina,

Would you mind sharing what your favorite kitchen gadgets are?? I’d love to see what you use to spiralize noodles and make the ‘sludges’ with.

Thanks!

Emily

I’ve been meaning to do a gadget post for ya’ll for quite some time!

So, without further slacking adieu, here are my absolute favorites and what I use them for:

1. Excalibur 9-tray dehydrator

excalibur

I got that baby from the pilot for my birthday two years ago and had used it at least once a week since then! I use the dehydrator to make everything under the sun, from raw crackers, cookies, rawnola, veggie chips, tortillas and flatbreads, tart crusts, and most importantly macaroons 🙂

macs

2. Spiralizer

This is probably the best $30 I’ve ever spent. I use the Joyce Chen model (available on Amazon) and spiralize veggies with it: cucumber, zucchini, carrots, sweet potatoes, the list goes on..

abzucnoodles

3. The Vita-mix 5200

023

The most baller piece of kitchen equipment I own. This bad johnny can make pretty much anything- soup, nut flour, nut milk, smoothies, raw ice cream and cheesecake mixture, raw chocolate, super fluffy hummus and sludges. I’ll even travel with it– the pic above is from when I dragged it with me to culinary school to have at the hotel.

4. Crinkle cutter

This model is from Pampered Chef and I use it for fancy veggies, particularly for more fry-like butternut squash fries

bnutfries

5. Kitchen Air Artisan Stand Mixer aka “The reason I got married”  Kidding, kidding. But add it to your wedding registry, like yesterday 😉

dough

I use the mixer for a lot of baked goods, but mostly pizza dough and vegan cookies

6. Jack LaLanne Power Juicer

I actually got my juicer from my good friend Heaby and LOVE it. It works wonderfully and I use it to make fresh juices for sake cocktails on special occasions and green juice or veggie juice on a frequent basis.

beet juice

7. Mandoline

I love using the mandoline for very thin, uniform veggie slices.

Perfect for veggie chips in the dehydrator, or raw lasagna

and last, but not least:

8. Coffee grinder

coffee grinder

This one might seem a little strange because I usually don’t drink coffee anymore. I actually hardly ever use the coffee grinder for coffee- it’s excellent for grinding spices (like CINNAMON! The taste is so much richer), and FLAX SEEDS! I buy the flax seeds whole and just toss them in the coffee grinder. Saweeeeet!

I hope ya’ll enjoyed reading about my favorite kitchen gadgets! These aren’t by any means necessities to have in a healthy kitchen, but they certainly make things more fun and convenient 😀

Please send any reader’s requests my way to fitnessista at gmail dot com

Enjoy your day and I’ll see ya before Zumba!

xoxo,

Gina

What’s your favorite kitchen gadget???

GREAT idea to use the coffee grinder for flax seeds, spices, etc!!!! 🙂 🙂

  3. sarah on January 20, 2010 at 1:36 pm

    Love the post!
Yeah, I’ve pretty much registered for every appliance I can think of 🙂 It only sucks that neither Crate and Barrel nor Bed and Bath carry an affordable veggie spiralizer (they have one that is $695..??). But for $30 I guessss I can go grab that myself. I’m dying to try those zucchini noodles!

Definately my 2 favorite kitchen gadgets are my food processor and kitcheaid mixer! I’d love to have a dehydrator and mandoline too though.

  5. Ashley on January 20, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Hmm. maybe i’ll have to rethink my view on marrying someday, that kitchen aid mixer is pretty nifty looking 😉

    Hey Gina,

Would you please advise as to what personal training accreditation you recommend, and through which institutions these are attained? I have seen so many different options out there, what are the most legitimate, and widely accepted?

    Thnak you,

    Tami

I heart my Breville juicer I got for my bday. Next, I want a Vitamix FOR SURE. Would love to hear your fav raw lasagna recipe.

  10. Heather @ Side of Sneakers on January 20, 2010 at 4:57 pm

Is there anything you don’t have? Your kitchen is my dream!!!!

  11. Laura on January 20, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Hi! I am coming out of the wood work! I love your blog but this is the first I have ever commented. I have a quick question for you. I am in the process of registering (don’t worry the kitchen mixer is already on the list!) but I am debating over a juicer: Breville vs. Jack. I was leaning towards Breville, but since you juice lack a mad woman and love your Jack… I am thinking about reconsidering. Thoughts??

  12. Catherine on January 20, 2010 at 5:32 pm

Hmm either my vitamix or immersion blender… that raw lasagna looks amazing!! Where can I find the recipe?

    • Fitnessista on January 20, 2010 at 10:04 pm

i’m not sure if it’s available online but it’s in “raw food, real world”

  13. Gena on January 20, 2010 at 5:40 pm

My food processor! Just for versatility. But you know I love my Vita, too.

Now I want a crinkle cutter.

  14. Jessica @ The Process of Healing on January 20, 2010 at 6:10 pm

    I’ve always wanted a juicer and a Vita-mix. One day… one day…

The kitchen “gadget” i can’t live without is a good, sharp knife. You can do most anything 🙂 But my coffeemaker is a close second.

  15. Dynamics on January 20, 2010 at 7:20 pm

Do you have any recipes for the raw crackers, cookie veggie chips, tortillas or flatbreads you would like to share? I just got my dehydrator and I really want to make something with crunch. Thanks.

    • Fitnessista on January 20, 2010 at 10:04 pm

yes i do! i’ll post them as i make them because i usually have a tendency to just throw things together without measuring 🙂

  16. Nicole @ Making Good Choices on January 20, 2010 at 7:48 pm

I LOVEE the spiralizer and crinkle cutter – they are my most recent purchases. My bread machine and stand mixer get me through the week.

  17. hemp jogger on January 20, 2010 at 8:16 pm

great post gina! i had no idea a spiralizer was so cheap. def gonna invest in one come summer, when more veg is available here to be spiraled up all pretty.

  18. Gracie @ Girl Meets Health on January 20, 2010 at 8:28 pm

    great post!!

My favorite gadget is my “Magic Bullet” type of mixer (not that exact brand). I use it almost every day for smoothies because it’s super fast and SO easy to clean (my favorite part, haha).

  19. Charlie on January 20, 2010 at 8:39 pm

I just got a VitaMix for Christmas and have literally used it every day. It’s just badass!! A dehydrator is next on my list…that rawnola is calling my name!

  20. Mary on January 20, 2010 at 8:54 pm

I bought a spiralizer months ago after reading about it here, and still don’t know what to do with it! I don’t even know if you spiralize the veg raw and then cook them, or cut them cooked, or eat them raw, or what! LOL

I love my Henckel’s santoku knife, Blendtec blender, Zojirushi rice cooker, Cuisinart food processor, and more!

Hey, I just made that pumpkin pie soup (but with sweet potato) and it was delicious! Thanks!

    • Fitnessista on January 20, 2010 at 10:02 pm

you can do it either way 🙂
glad you liked the pumpkin soup– i make it with sweet potato, too. so good!

  21. Lisa on January 21, 2010 at 12:45 am

Currently my favorite gadget is my KitchenAid food processor. My boyfriend got it for me for Christmas. He told me he had his mom come with him to pick it out because he had no idea what a food processor even was. Yep, he’s a keeper 🙂

  22. Kelli on January 21, 2010 at 7:34 am

My husband jokes that I own every veggie/fruit cutter on the planet. But I DO NOT own the one that slices veggies so thin!! LOVE IT! Right now my fave is my the “stem gem”, a tools that makes de stemming strawberries very easy. Have a great day!!!

  23. Angie (Losing It and Loving It) on January 21, 2010 at 11:07 am

My favorite kitchen gadget is the Magic Bullet. Hubby’s favorite is Pampered Chef baking stones. He uses those to cook almost everything!

I would really love a good dehydrator like you have. We bought a cheap one and although it works I’m sure the one you have would be much easier to use.

  24. Katy ( The Balanced Foodie ) on January 21, 2010 at 1:00 pm

I love my Kitchen Aid mixer!! I always dreamed of an “Empire red” one before I even got engaged. I, of course, found the only man his age to have his own kitchen aid mixer already! He jokes that I am the only woman who would be upset by that fact. I just wanted a red one! But his is still beautiful and useful and I LOVE it!! 🙂
