The famous turkey burger recipe

As I mentioned last week, Wednesdays have become crock pot night at our house.

Or hot bar night?

Photo 55

Yes, that too.

The Pilot has his Master’s class Wednesday night (via webcam correspondence), and I work during the day, so dinner is fast and furious. Yesterday I decided that if I can’t get it in the slow cooker on my lunch break, how about hot bar all around? Madre, Liv and I had a wonderful dinner together, and then I brought the Pilot some food home to sneak into the office during his class.

Photo 28

Last night was also the night that Caro opened the pantry while I was upstairs putting Livi to sleep, dragged out the bag of Snap Crisps and was quickly found, happily munching away with her head in the bag.

It was also my first viewing ever of Downton Abbey (free on Amazon Prime!). Also known as “35 minutes of life that I’ll never get back.” I was excited to see it after all of the hype that’s going around, but got absolutely nothing out of it. I kept waiting for something exciting to happen, and even with the beautiful cinematography and costumes, I just wasn’t into it.

I’d love to watch a show with a little substance (time is limited around here and when I do watch TV, it’s the occasional Elmo variety), but besides Girls, there’s nothing I’m really crazy about right now.

And on the random theme of this post, I have to tell you what happened at the gym recently: a woman unplugged the StairMaster while I was on it, doing intervals (FAST), reading a magazine and listening to musicโ€ฆ aka not paying attention to potential StarMaster un-pluggers. She was apparently using a fan that she had plugged in for her workout, went to unplug and totally chose my machine instead of said fan. The machine STOPPED while I was sprinting up, and I grasped onto the handrails, totally saving myself from faceplanting onto the revolving stairs of death.

I pushed some buttons on the machine, trying to figure out what the heck happened, and looked down to see her. She cheerily said, “I plugged it back in!” and even though I wanted to throw my O magazine at her (which ironically, was on the topic of relaxation), I took a deep breath and said, “no worries, I was finished anyway.” I’ve been keeping this quote in the back of my mind lately, and really endeavoring to be kind, even when sometimes.. I don’t feel like it. Sometimes people are rude, say nasty things, unplug your machine in the middle of a great cardio workout, and you just have to roll with it.

With my profound words of the day (haha), I’m off to teach some Buff Booty.

Hope you have a very happy, and kindness-filled almost-Friday.

xoxo

Gina

A few people asked for the Pilot’s amazing turkey burger recipe, so I asked him for the details:

He seasons the ground turkey with salt, pepper, garlic powder, then adds a splash of soy sauce, lots of chopped jalapeรฑos and a small drizzle of maple syrup. He forms the meat into patties and grills for 6-8 min on one side, flips and then 4-5 min on the other side.

Winter Shape Up friends:ย Leave a comment to check in for today’s workout!ย Today is HIIT and Steady– one of my all-time faves. How did it go? What cardio did you choose? Who’s STOKED for next week’s workout?! I had a feeling this was going to be the best Winter Shape Up yet and love the way it’s going so far, especially the check-ins and amazing sense of community you’ve all created. Keep up the great work!

Congrats to the Physique 57 giveaway winner:

Jeannie, who said,

“Hi Gina โ€“ I did workout 1 today + tempo. I increased my weights from Monday. Monday I went lighter since I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect but today I gave it my all and it felt great. Tempo on treadmill.
Love all the motivation on the check ins and the great prizes so far.”

Congrats!! Send me your info: fitnessista @ gmail dot com and I’ll forward it along to the P57 fairy.

Stay tuned for your next giveaway! ๐Ÿ˜‰

You are hilarious! I had a good little laugh with your revolving stairs of death story. Glad you didn’t get hurt- I would have wanted to throw my O magazine at whoever did that to me, too! Out of curiosity, what level do you choose for fast on the stairmaster?

  2. Amanda on January 31, 2013 at 10:15 am

I started my morning bright and early with some elliptical HIIT! It was awesome! Winter Shape up always make me feel motivated! ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Lucie on January 31, 2013 at 10:15 am

Oh my Gosh, I can’t believe she just unplugged the stair master!! Imagine what could have happen…..your reaction is amazing!!
And that look of Caro….she exactly knows it. ๐Ÿ™‚
Please give a huge thank you to the pilot for sharing his recipe!! Can’t wait to try it!
PS. I am so excited for next week’s workout! !

  4. jillian on January 31, 2013 at 10:15 am

I did HIIT this morning on the treadmill. I didn’t make it to the steady, but at least I got my heart pumping — and myself sweating ๐Ÿ™‚

That’s how I felt about Downton Abbey, too!! I really, really wanted to like it. But I a.) tend not to like shows/movies set in another land (ha) in another time and b.) couldn’t understand a word they were saying. I’ve been meaning to give it another shot with episode #2, but I just can’t make myself do it…. haha
Also, glad you didn’t face plant! That could have been bad…

  6. Alissa on January 31, 2013 at 10:22 am

When we moved into our last house my husband and I both fell down the stairs a couple times due to not being used to having them. Never fun ๐Ÿ™

Thank you so much for sharing the turkey burger recipe! I am making them tonight and will be adding his stuff to the mix.

Love the picture of Caro! She looks SO guilty!!

  8. Kimberly on January 31, 2013 at 10:32 am

I ran outside for the first time in forever. The ice had thawed and I didn’t have anywhere else to go this morning so I didn’t have to rush back to the puppy. The sun was trying to peek through and I was thrilled to not be on the treadmill. I ran out at a steady pace and then did sprint work on the way back.

  9. Erin on January 31, 2013 at 10:34 am

The first episode of Downton Abbey is boring! You have to check out episode 2 from season 1, I promise it gets much juicier/outrageous.Also, all of the season premeires are super long, the actual episodes are only an hour but pack the same amount of stuff into them, so they move more quickly. I do find that I have to be in the right mindset for it.

I remember one particularly bad summer when the power went out at the gym about 4 times during my cardio. Watching all of the people on treadmills plow into the front every time was pretty funny. Good on you for keeping your cool!

  13. Ali @ Peaches and Football on January 31, 2013 at 10:41 am

Caro knows good food when she smells/sees it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll admit, I think I enjoyed Season 1 of Downton more because I tend to enjoy the period dramas in general. However, with overall storyline/pace – it’s not the best out there. I keep thinking all the recent hype must mean season 2 and 3 are phenomenal – so I’m waiting for those to hit Netflix so I can see.

  14. Jody on January 31, 2013 at 10:55 am

Episode 1 of Downton Abbey did nothing for me either, but I promise if you stick with it until at least episode 3 you’ll probably be hooked. Seasons 2 and 3 are even better. It’s totally different from the stuff I normally watch, but I surprisingly love it!

  15. Katie on January 31, 2013 at 10:58 am

Can we still participate in the giveaways if we’ve mixed up the WSU schedule? I want to check in but kinda feel like I’m “lying” if I leave a comment and did a different workout than the one on the official schedule!

I did a HIIT and steady yesterday, and planning on WSUW#1 and HIIT this afternoon ๐Ÿ™‚

  16. Tonyne on January 31, 2013 at 10:59 am

I am so happy to hear someone else say that of Downton Abbey. I didn’t like it either! I felt almost guilty about that based on the current hype.

  17. Jody on January 31, 2013 at 11:00 am

In place of HIIT and Steady I’m headed out to take a Turbokick class during lunch. That’ll get me sweaty for sure. Thanks again for all the work you put into this. I didn’t realize how much I was craving a change in my routine (even though I take a variety of classes all the time) until I woke up this morning feeling oh so deliciously sore. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us next week!

  18. Greta on January 31, 2013 at 11:03 am

I did the P90x CardioX DVD this morning…it’s not exactly HIIT and Steady, but worked in a pinch when I couldn’t get to the gym or run outside in the snow/rain/slush. I hope to get in a run tomorrow instead of having an OFF day. I hope that still counts and is not Winter Shape Up blasphemy (is it?)! I have been really enjoying Workout #1! So thanks again!

Are you able to run on the stair master? I always feel like I’m goign to lose my balance if I don’t hold onto the railings. Thanks for sharing the turkery burger recipe…I was curious what made it famous ๐Ÿ™‚ Will make this next week. Turkery burgers are my fav!

  24. Katherine P on January 31, 2013 at 11:14 am

I got my HIIT and steady in this morning on the stair master. Wow my legs are going to be even more sore tomorrow!

  25. Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health on January 31, 2013 at 11:17 am

I love your medieval texting, so funny. I would have had a heart attack on the stair master if that lady did that to me! Oh my gosh.

I recommend Parenthood for a good show to watch. You should start from the beginning though as they are on like season 5 or something now. It makes me laugh and cry pretty much every episode.

    • Jaime on January 31, 2013 at 1:14 pm

Me too on the Parenthood!! It can be incredibly cheesy at times, but I just love it!

  26. Reenie on January 31, 2013 at 11:21 am

Hey…. at least Caro pulled out something healthy!! HA!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  27. Cassie Vaughn on January 31, 2013 at 11:21 am

I am a teacher and ended up with an inclement weather day, so I tore the exercising up! I did 1 30-minute yoga session, 1 50 minute yoga session, 1-60minute elliptical session (finally got to the gym!), and workout 1. I’m a little tired today, but it felt awesome! And I’m hoping that I get the chance to completely indulge again tomorrow (snow, maybe?).
I’m also doing pretty good with my eating. I’ve been a moderate clean eater for 6 months now and every day I am closer to being a crazy clean eater. I still do corn chips sometimes, sausage (so bad, I know but so good!), bread, tortillas, pitas, buns. The bread is my biggest issue right now. I’d love to do it from scratch to cut out the processed junk that goes in it. But I don’t have time. I already make my own snacks from scratch (no pre made protein bars for me!) to keep out the preservatives and whatnot. I also do not live near a Whole Foods or Trader Joes, tragic right? I think I may also be slightly gluten sensitive (in addition to dairy allergy). I always get whole wheat, but any suggestions on better options?
    Thanks!
Will definately be hitting the HIIT and steady when I get home!

  28. Meghan on January 31, 2013 at 11:23 am

I once accidentally tripped over a cord to a treadmill in my apartment’s gym (which I may add was unsafely pulled taught so that it was very easy to trip on) while a girl was walking on it. Thankfully she was walking at a 0 incline, so she didn’t fall. I felt HORRIBLE and apologized a bazillion times and she was very rude and just kept cursing. I’m sure it scared her, but it was clearly an accident (as I had fallen on the floor), so I would have appreciated if she had kept her cool like you did! Accidents happen, people make mistakes, good to remember to keep calm and carry on. Thanks for the reminder!

  29. Kaila @healthyhelperblog! on January 31, 2013 at 11:23 am

Haha! That pic of Caroline is priceless! Caught in the act! And I feel ya on Downton Abby! SO BORING. I just could not get into it at all.

  30. Shelley @ Mile High Healthy on January 31, 2013 at 11:29 am

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago at the gym. I was sprinting on a treadmill and a woman tripped over the cord and unplugged it from the wall. I ran smack into the front of the treadmill and she looked at me sheepishly then kept going without plugging it back in and got on another machine. I don’t get mad at people (especially for a simple accident), but an “I’m sorry” would’ve been nice! Sometimes the gym is just too awkward.

  31. Lauren @ Sassy Molassy on January 31, 2013 at 11:30 am

I still can’t really get into Downton, but the manfriend actually likes it so I watch. I would be pretty furious with the unplugger for almost killing me, but sounds like you handled it like a pro. ๐Ÿ™‚

  32. Karen on January 31, 2013 at 11:31 am

I started my morning bright and early at 4:30AM with some treadmill HIIT and am totally energized now. Loving Winter Shape-up. Have a great Thursday!!

  35. Becca on January 31, 2013 at 11:43 am

I’m glad to know I’m not the only who cannot get into Downton Abbey. I just recently discovered Girls and I freaking LOVE it! So funny! I am starting with season 1.

  36. Gianna on January 31, 2013 at 12:03 pm

I was going to try and watch and see what the hype was about but I think I am officially convinced othewise. I watched a little preview and was very, meh, about the whole thing. I might chalk this one up to the whole Fifty Shades of Grey that I still don’t understand either.

And your reaction to the stairmill, bless you. I probably a) would have gone tumbling and b) may not have responded as kindly!

  37. Danielle on January 31, 2013 at 12:19 pm

I would have face planted into the stair mill for sure! So impressed you hung on. Too funny that Caroline found her way into the snap pea crisps. At least she made a healthy choice ๐Ÿ˜‰

I did workout 1 for the 2nd time today and was able to increase from 2 rounds to 3 rounds, and I also upped the weight from 7.5 to 10lb dumbbells, woo! ๐Ÿ™‚ Followed it up with 15min “tempo” on the elliptical (picked a resistance a couple notches higher than I normally would have and just hung in there). Loving this winter shape up!

I did HIIT for 30 mins on the spin bike this morning- including sprints, Tabata intervals, hills, and jumps- orchestrated by the awesome spin instructor at my gym. About to go for a walk during my half hour lunch break as my steady (it’s finally not raining here in MA!! though it’s cold again)

Seriously – if you want a good show, get into Suits! Don’t know a single person who doesnt love love love it. It’s better than all the other shows at their prime, plus the witty banter is insane (and the hot guys dont hurt either!)

    • Katie on January 31, 2013 at 1:35 pm

I second this… I’m not into legal dramas usually, but Suits is fantastic! My bf got me into it and now I’m hooked

  45. hayes on January 31, 2013 at 1:24 pm

I’m planning to do hiit and steady state today and tackle workout one again tomorrow. I’m embarrassed to say that I am just now able to move about after that first workout, which I did Monday….

I love Downton, but didn’t like it at first either. It does get a bit scandalous so I would recommend keeping with it a few more episodes before giving up. If you are looking for new shows, I have a few recommendations. Do you like Mad Men? If you’ve never watched it, now is a good time to do some marathon viewing, as the new season starts in April. Arrested Development is awesome and netflix has brought it back starting this spring! I love Breaking Bad, too.

  46. Karen on January 31, 2013 at 1:25 pm

I agree, I didn’t care for Downton Abbey either, even though my MIL and all of the critics in the world give it rave reviews. I found it boring! However, I can give you a few recommendations of Netflix streaming shows that are awesome!! #1 Breaking Bad – the best! I can’t imagine anyone not liking this show! #2 – Mad Men (I’m currently watching it now) #3 The Walking Dead (if you like suspense and zombies).

Ahahah! I totally got a kick out of those texts! Caro seems like she is trying to look innocent in that photo, poor little pup. And OMG about the stair master! That is crazzzzzy!

  49. Tracy on January 31, 2013 at 1:44 pm

I did my HIIT on the Arc Trainer and then moved over to the stairs for some steady cardio. Started at 5am…great way to start my day!

  50. Madison (Pointy Toe Shoe Crew) on January 31, 2013 at 1:47 pm

On the topic of cardio equipment fails – someone abandoned a treadmill going 10.0 and my sister (playing on her ipod and not looking at what she was doing) stepped onto it. Needless to say…she hasn’t gone back to that particular location of our gym since, just in case anyone recognizes her as the girl who ate it.
Just did my HIIT + Steady on my bike trainer…I am SO SWEATY. My first time trying that style of cardio, but it definitely won’t be the last ๐Ÿ˜‰
