So good 🙂

This morning was my first time teaching YogaTone at a studio here in Tucson –let me know if you want the deets- and I was 100% positive I’d have no people, since it was early and the very first class. I had 4!!! Three cheers for that, and four cheers for the playlist I used:

1. “Hello” Martin Solveig & Dragonette

2. “King Without a Crown” Matisyahu

3. “Someone Like You” Adele

4. “I’ll Be in the Sky” B.o.B

5. “Glitter in the Air” Pink

6. “Cosmic Love” Florence + the Machine

7. “Neutron Star Collision” Muse

8. “The Show Goes On” Lupe Fiasco

9. “Come Home” Yael Naim

10. “Don’t Let Me Fall” B.o.B

11. “All My Heart” Sleeping with Sirens

12."What Part of Forever” Cee Lo Green

13. “Gayatri Mantra” Deva Premal (holler to Averie for the suggestion- LOVE)

I was pretty proud of that playlist- it was a good one 🙂 Class was fun. Think of it as a traditional yoga class with WAY more emphasis on strength- lots of lunges, leg lifts and extensions, ab work and push-ups mixed into the sequence. A glorious burn 😉

After teaching, I had to go to the resort to take a class that I’m supposed to teach on Saturday. It was a good cardio/strength workout, but after I left and got to my car, the weirdest thing happened: I started sobbing. I drove to the bank and am pretty sure anyone who saw me driving wanted to check me into the looney bin.

photo (14)

I was pretty positive that I’d lost my marbles for good, so I tweeted asking if anyone else had experienced that after a workout. I was BLOWN away by how many people said they’ve cried after a workout.

What in the what?

Exercise is supposed to fill you up with beautiful endorphins, not make you show up at the bank with eyeliner all over your face.

So I did a little research and came across *this article*. It’s worth a read- very interesting stuff.

Apparently exercise can release emotions and crank on the waterworks. Who knew? There’s definitely a lot going on right now, but sheesh.

Bella kisses,

pink lilies

flowers

and carbs made it better.

toast

(brown rice toast w/ 2 egg whites, salsa and goat cream cheese)

Have you ever cried after a workout?

Hope you have a great night and I’ll see ya in the morning!

xoxo

I just wanted to tell you that there have been many times where i’ve let the waterworks well, work after a run or a really crazy workout… even if it wasn’t that crazy, sometimes it stirs something up inside and i just get really emotional… you’re not alone 🙂 Happens once every 6 months or so for me! I’m due. lol!

  2. Kate on May 16, 2011 at 8:06 pm

I’ve done this! Especially after doing a lot of yoga. Chest openers sometimes make me cry. Hip openers make me WANT TO PUNCH PEOPLE, sometimes. (I don’t though. Promise!) I guess that’s where I store my anger, hahaha. It’s good to get it out. And totally normal if it happens sometimes.

  3. mela tircuit on May 16, 2011 at 8:08 pm

I’ve had many drives coming home from a workout wailing away like a big ‘ol baby! The first time it happened I could not think of a logical reason for it!! I mean I really had nothing to be sad about. But I realized later…many crying sessions after it was from my workouts!! Now I just let it go! Feels great! 🙂

    • Fitnessista on May 16, 2011 at 8:09 pm

haha way to embrace it! 🙂

During my first marathon, I had the best “runner’s high” experience. I was so nervous about the race, and then at mile 18, the realization that I would finish this marathon and I was healthy and strong and capable just bowled me over. I started crying and smiling so big… all the other runners around me thought I was a nutter. But it so amazing.

  5. Ilana on May 16, 2011 at 8:12 pm

I cry sometimes after I teach – no real reason, just whoosh, on come the water works. I also cry ALL the time in hot vinyasa but that’s kind of why I’m going, to help myself move on…

  6. Felicia (Natural + Balanced) on May 16, 2011 at 8:15 pm

hmm thats never happened to me.. but I can say that I get pretty cranky/emotional if I haven’t gotten a good workout in over a long period of time!

  7. Sana on May 16, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    I have cried while workingout…..all the time…..

  8. Kim on May 16, 2011 at 8:21 pm

Everyone needs a good cry every now and then! Go with it!

WOOHOO to sun warrior protein on open sky tomorrow – always comes just when I’m running out!

    Cheers!

That happened to me once! I started crying while ON a machine IN the gym. It was the strangest thing, it just came out of no where! And of course I have cried during races. I also cried once in a run when I set a new PDR. Too funny!

  11. Whitney on May 16, 2011 at 8:26 pm

I’ve never cried, but I can see how someone can! I feel so accomplished and exhausted when I’m finished, it’s a wonder I haven’t before.

  12. Cat on May 16, 2011 at 8:27 pm

Crying while working out doesn’t surprise me as much (can’t think of a specific time, but I know I’ve been brought to the brink), but what did surprise me was crying during a massage recently! It was my birthday and was feeling a lot of emotions about firstly turning 30 (!) and also about a recent break-up. It was definitely kind of strange and made me feel kind of awkward, but I thought maybe they are used to that happening?

    • Jenna H on May 16, 2011 at 10:11 pm

totally happened to me too, apparently it’s pretty common, according to the lady who was my massage therapist the first time I started boo hooing during. 🙂

When I was really stressed out and overwhelmed with a few situations, I sobbed numerous (NUMEROUS) times right after a hard workout.

  14. kristi (sweet cheeks) on May 16, 2011 at 8:31 pm

Wow I will definitely be reading that article. I have never heard of such a thing! I’m always super happy after working out but this is good to know in case the sobs ever come my way!

  15. Michelle (your girlfriend for fitness) on May 16, 2011 at 8:31 pm

The only time I have heard of crying while working out is when my yoga instructor told us that chest openers can release lots of emotions. But I can totally understand how this can happen especially if you have any underlying stress.

  16. jen on May 16, 2011 at 8:33 pm

I cried a couple times when we were resting in Baptiste yoga – I couldn’t tell my sweat from the tears!

  17. caryn on May 16, 2011 at 8:36 pm

It’s funny how the different parts of ourself sort of synch up & take care of (or at least affect) each other.

I love “Cosmic Love”…nice choice. 🙂 You should check out “Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)” by her too. It’s amaaaazing.

    I’ve cried in savasana before.

I’ve also cried in eagle pose, but that’s mostly due to the horrible burning sensation 😉

      haha!

those mushrooms look awesome – thanks for showing a delicious “meal for one!”
i’ve cried after yoga and after each marathon…that mind/body/spirit connection can really get you sometimes.
love song #1 in your playlist! a current fave!

  20. Pure2raw twins on May 16, 2011 at 9:05 pm

interesting about workouts causing tears, I always blamed it on other things. Makes sense, your body knows when it needs to release things I guess.

and thanks for the playlists, always love ur music!

  21. Melissa (MelissaLikesToEat) on May 16, 2011 at 9:06 pm

I’ve never cried after a workout before. Interesting that it moved you to tears. 🙂

  22. Allison @ Food For Healing on May 16, 2011 at 9:07 pm

i dont think i’ve ever cried after a workout, but i can definitely understand what you mean. I have times where i just want to cry for no reason! it kind of sucks. I guess its just another one of those things we just gotta get through.
    those stuffed mushrooms look un-freakin-believable

  23. Brittany on May 16, 2011 at 9:09 pm

I thought I was the only one this happened to!! The first time it happened was when I ran my first 1/2 marathon, but it happens to me sometimes after a hard spin class or run. I have never done yoga, but I need to try it. I need more strength work and less cardio. Maybe I would cry less?? 🙂

  24. Laura @ prettylittlewords on May 16, 2011 at 9:10 pm

Crazy crazy, but maybe you just needed to get it out of your system! No worries, we all have our sob moments!!

On a completely different note — what kind of dressing is that on your side salad? It looks SO GOOD and I have been looking for a non-dairy creamy balsamic type dressing for awhile! Please do share!

  25. jenny eats nutella from a spoon on May 16, 2011 at 9:11 pm

sometimes my workouts have me cry afterwards… especially yoga. i do 30 minutes of power yoga and about 10 minutes into rest i cry as if a waterfall hit me. then it goes away after 15 minutes. knowing me, i’m not really surprised, but i bet there are others out there… it’s all related to hormones i think.

  26. Jaime on May 16, 2011 at 9:19 pm

Yes! I’m pretty sure there’s something wrong with me, because I never get endorphins from exercise but it always makes me cry. Well, not always–I don’t cry after every work out haha….but I definitely don’t get the intended effect from exercise in terms of feeling good, happy, etc. What’s weird is it is always after I do strength training, but never after I do yoga. I’m banned from cardio right now because of a recent surgery, but that would probably make me cry…but only because I can’t stand it! 🙂

  27. fran hlavacek on May 16, 2011 at 9:40 pm

Oooh, ya. Cried a few times after a workout, especially running. If I hit a new milestone for myself at least it made sense, but sometimes there was no reason whatsoever. Glad I’m not alone!

BTW, Deva Premal is AWESOME. I have several of her CD’s and think she has a beautiful voice.

    Peace,
    fran

I’ve cried mid-workout a few times. Often, this is my time to sort through stressful things in my life and the combination of the thoughts + the physical exertion makes me cry. Not meager tears though – full on sobbing. I echo a few others on here when I say that, at first, the tears were a source of embarrassment. Now, I just roll with it. Feels kind of nice actually.

  31. Amy@healthyhungryhappy.com on May 16, 2011 at 9:50 pm

definitely during long runs while training for marathons…sometimes it just feels soooo hard that i break into tears mid run haha. its weird…but im glad im not the only one!

  32. Alyssa on May 16, 2011 at 9:56 pm

I definitly have cried after running. Sometimes I go on thinking runs and when I stop to stretch, it just kinda comes rushing to my eyes. PS what salad dressing is on your greens tonight? Looks delish 🙂

  33. Samantha on May 16, 2011 at 9:59 pm

I used to cry all the time after our long basketball practices. I’m guessing part of it was the stress but i also wouldnt be surprised if the workout was part of it since we did a lot.

  34. Jess on May 16, 2011 at 10:01 pm

Yes, I have definitely done that. Ugh, today in fact. I blamed the rain in NYC and Tuesday’s full moon for amping up whatever’s been kicking around in my head. Never knew that about exercise!

  35. kalli on May 16, 2011 at 10:01 pm

i have cried while running many a times….it can be very cathartic

  36. kaila @ healthy helper! on May 16, 2011 at 10:04 pm

That brown rice toast with eggs looks fab! I have stuff like that for snacks all the time! Mmm good!

I actually have cried during and after a workout before…luckily it was in the privacy of my own home. But I totally can understand why people would cry after a workout. It reminds me of how in my hot yoga classes the teacher always warns us that camel pose may bring about a rush of emotion. When you’re working out, you’re pushing your body to its limits…similar to how you may feel when experiencing something really emotional. So crying actually kind of makes sense when you think about it!

  37. Mary @ Bites and Bliss on May 16, 2011 at 10:05 pm

That is SUCH a relief to hear!! It’s so strange, but there have been a few sessions where I actually burst out in tears for absolutely no reason. I thought I was going haywire!

  38. Averie (LoveVeggiesandYoga) on May 16, 2011 at 10:07 pm

Ok so much I have to say…

Goat cheese stuffed mushrooms for uno = nice! I love how EASY they were and that you used Vegenasie which is pretty much my #1 condiment in life 🙂

Next, Deva Premal rocks. As does her partner, Mitan. Glad you liked it….Gayatri Mantra is classic but I love the way Deva does it. She has a few versions but her voice is just so soothing and powerful and I have sobbed my little heart out after listening to her, too. (thanks for the shout!)

First, it’s a full moon. Traditional yogis would likely NOT practice today b/c there is far too much prana (energy) in the Universe right now and it leads to emotional upset, and although ppl usually “have energy” at a time like this, it’s not generally a calm and focused energy. It’s a bit manic and chaotic which is why we typically refrain from practice (in ashtanga especially) on full and new moons.

So all that is just a long winded way of saying you are probably really in touch with the natural world right now and you’re reaction was what nature had in store for you. Any time I practice on full moons, I usually end up sobbing or feeling out of sorts. Or when i try to force a practice on a new moon, too much apana (downward pulling energy) and I can hardly make it thru the practice.

I could go on and on, have done lots of posts on full moons & how they effect us interpersonally, relationally, etc.

Amazing congrats on your 1st class! That is soooo awesome!

    Namaste!
    xo
    🙂

I have cried a handful of times after yoga. The first time it happened I was so taken off guard and embarrassed and yes, thought I had totally lost my marbles. I was lying in savasana and all of a sudden just started weeping like I had just gone to a screening of Marley and Me (it gets me every time), so I grabbed my stuff and ran out. Now I just pretend like I’m wiping sweat off my face and roll with it. 😉 I think that sometimes, your body just *needs to cry* , whether you’re sad or not. And I am definitely more of a stiff upper lip kind of girl so that may have something to do with it. I run too, but I feel like with running you have all these distractions (music, all the thoughts running through your head, how damn hot it is) , but yoga, it does NOT let you off the hook does it? Which I think was why it was so hard for me to “get into it”, I just wanted to zone out and MOVE haha.

PS- I also cry after getting massages. The massage therapist told me it is actually really common, especially if you have a lot of kinks/built up tension. Who knew?

  40. Elle on May 16, 2011 at 10:10 pm

Hi! I’ve been following your blog for a while now, but – for some reason – haven’t had the guts to comment. Just want to say that many of your posts are so motivating and remind me that getting fit is fun! (I’m working on getting into shape, and sometimes I forget, haha..)
I cried in a yoga class once, after doing pigeon pose.. Didn’t realize I had that much emotion stored!

  41. Jeanne on May 16, 2011 at 10:16 pm

Hi Gina! I’ve never cried after a workout but I’ve cried while running on my treadmill. It was caused by the perfect storm of a really emotional and angry song (Linkin Park) and thinking about a lot of garbage that was going on in my life. Running, crying, and attempting to sing/shout with the song was weirdly awesome even though I did feel craaaaazy. =)

  42. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on May 16, 2011 at 10:18 pm

OOOOOOOOH my gosh, I am SO happy to hear this isn’t me!

I almost ALWAYS cry when I do Zumba at home… I feel like a freak, but it almost always happens to me!!

  43. sarah on May 16, 2011 at 10:20 pm

i had cancer a couple years ago and my first practice after surgery and radiation i sobbed in shivasana. it was so amazing to have my body back, even if it was rusty.

  47. Holly @ The Runny Egg on May 16, 2011 at 10:59 pm

I cry during long runs all the time — yes sometimes it is because I’m so tired and want to go home, but sometimes I just start thinking about things and I just get flooded with emotions.

  48. AJ on May 16, 2011 at 11:02 pm

I’ve cried in the middle of a run before. It usually happens when I haven’t had time to think about some the tough stuff. Running is very much my “me” time when I get all my thinking done. If there are emotions being shoved aside all day long, a run will definitely bring emotions to the surface. Its a good thing for sure!

  49. elizabeth on May 16, 2011 at 11:12 pm

Never cried after a workout but I don’t have the big highs (pilot home! awesome job! new house! back in your favorite ‘hood!) and the despondently low lows (pilot GONE! interviewing and training like crazy for job! other job not working out!) etc. etc. Be kind to yourself, your poor little emotions have been through the wringer. I think you need a massage. And maybe the chakra balancing yoga practice from yogadownloads.

    or… just more goat cheese.

  50. justine on May 16, 2011 at 11:39 pm

Yes – yesterday, in fact. Better out than in, I always say!
