Two new hair and nail faves

Thank you so much for those of you who left feedback on the Fashion page. Iโ€™m using all of your suggestions and weโ€™ll see where it rolls from here ๐Ÿ˜‰

Since my clothing situation is still awkward [hoping to remedy the situation this weekend], I thought I could focus on two things that are easy prettify when youโ€™re feeling blah: hair and nails.

Here are two things that Iโ€™m loving right now:

1) Conair travel set curlers (about $30)

The thing I love the most about these are the soft case- I had a beloved set of hot curlers, and the case got cracked in my suitcase during one of our travel adventures. These ones are crack proof! [<โ€”that sounds weird, haha]

curlers

I forgot about the hot curlers for a while, since I have fallen in love with my Easter curling iron, or will just straighten my hair.

One day we were chilling at my momโ€™s house and the Pilot fell asleep on the couch. I was bored, so while he was sleeping, I heated up my momโ€™s hot curlers and threw some in my hair. The first thing he said when he woke up: โ€œYour hairโ€ฆ you look absolutely gorgeousโ€

I ordered my own set the next day.

Some tips for hot curlers:

-If your hair is dry and holds a curl reallllly well: to avoid the Shirley Temple look, wash your hair and wear the curlers for a while at night. [I recommend the medium to jumbo sized hot curlers- the tiny ones make the curls too tight] Take them out before you go to bed, and in the morning your hair will have beautiful, soft waves. Itโ€™s ok to put curlers in your hair if you havenโ€™t washed it in a day or so โ€“I wash mine every other day- and just tousle and go.

-If your hair doesnโ€™t hold a curl very well: use medium-sized curlers on freshly washed hair. When you take the curlers out, donโ€™t touch the curls or mess with them and spray with a heavy hold hairspray. When youโ€™re ready to leave the house, lightly tousle the curls and go. Avoid touching your hair too much because the curls will droop.

hair (2)

[Gives the same look as curling each piece of hair individually. Itโ€™s a major time saver]

*If you guys would like, I can do a video post on how to put the curlers in- itโ€™s super easy once you have a method in place.

2) Teal and army green nail polish

These are two of the big colors for fall.

polish

Jewel tones always make an appearance as the weather cools down. Teal is surprisingly neutral,

and even more fun with a slightly lighter French manicure.

nails

Army green tones are replacing greige and sandy brown.

Have you used hot curlers before? What did you think?

What color are your nails right now? My nails are teal, and my toes are orange for Halloween ๐Ÿ™‚

Google magnetic nail polish and prepare to have your mind blown!! I just got a beautiful purple from LCN yesterday and tried it out for the first time and it’s the bomb!!

  2. laura on October 12, 2011 at 3:18 pm

would love a tutorial on how to do hot rollers! i can never seem to get it right.

    love your nails, too. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Jen on October 12, 2011 at 4:07 pm

Ditto! I’d love a tutorial too. Maybe it’s because my hair is layered, but I can never get it right…

    • Stephanie on October 12, 2011 at 4:09 pm

I would love to see a tutorial, too!!!

  3. Alissa on October 12, 2011 at 3:19 pm

I love the teal tips. I will 100% be doing that idea! Please, please, please do a video about hot rollers. I have had a set in my closet for over a year and haven’t a clue where to start. Thank you so much, I love your blog!

  4. Rachel on October 12, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Your hair looks so pretty!! I would LOVE to see a video of how to use them. I can’t curl my hair to save my life!

  5. Cait @ Cait hates Cake on October 12, 2011 at 3:20 pm

I love hot curlers, but don’t use them nearly enough. Love the volume I get when I use them. My nails right now are Case Study by Essie, which is one of their new fall colors (a khaki color w/ a greenish tint).

  6. Jen G. on October 12, 2011 at 3:20 pm

Please do a tutorial! I’ve finally accepted that I am an adult and that a ponytail doesn’t always cut it. But I have no idea what to actually do!

    • Liz S on October 12, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Jen, I hear you on this one. These curls could be a good interview-hair base.

  7. Carrie on October 12, 2011 at 3:21 pm

Nice tip about the curlers. My hair holds curl for days and it does always look less done once I’ve slept in them. It’s a delicate balance between soft curls and total bedhead, though, that’s for sure!

  8. Vanessa @ Swift as Shadows on October 12, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not very good at doing my hair. I’ve never tried hot curlers, but I recently started using a straightener to curl my hair and I’m pretty happy with the results. As for the nail polish, I still love the “greige” that made it’s debut last autumn — it’s like a cross between grey and beige with the slightest tinge of purple. For some extra sparkle, I always go over my ring fingers with a glitter polish. =)

    • Fitnessista on October 12, 2011 at 3:23 pm

i love doing that, too. just the right amount of sparkle, without being hookery ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. laura on October 12, 2011 at 3:23 pm

yes, PLEASE!!!!! do the tutorial on the hot rollers!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Rachel on October 12, 2011 at 3:23 pm

I’ve tried hot curlers a few times, but I can never seem to get it right. It’s either way too curly or barely even curled at all. I would love it if you did a video… Maybe then I could do it right ๐Ÿ˜‰

  11. Kelly on October 12, 2011 at 3:26 pm

yes, PLEEEEEEEASE do a tutorial. I have tried many times and failed each and every time!! ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Thank you

  12. Andrea on October 12, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I have very fine, thin hair and I found a product that I can’t live without!!!!! Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray! Gives my hair so much texture and i never have to use hairspray and my hair will hold the curl for days!

  13. Alyssa @ Life of bLyss on October 12, 2011 at 3:27 pm

oooh, I’m all about those hot curlers. AND silver crackel over pale lilac is presently on my toesies. ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Dani on October 12, 2011 at 3:28 pm

    I’m all for the tutorial!!

  15. LeeAnn on October 12, 2011 at 3:29 pm

I have those travel curlers and LOVE them! Totally loving the green nail hues!!

  16. Dani on October 12, 2011 at 3:31 pm

Does the set you featured have the large & medium sized rollers? I have thick hair like yours and am not sure if I would need the jumbo size too?

    • Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on October 12, 2011 at 4:08 pm

My hair is gina’s length and thick. I use a standard set of hot rollers that has large, medium, and small rollers. I’m strategic about where I place them. The largest rollers I use on the top of my head and the smallest around the nape of my neck, because that area is harder to hold a curl. I’ve heard this is true for many other women, too. I haven’t used the jumbo hot rollers, but I imagine they’d be more useful for volume and subtle wave than curl.

      • Dani on October 14, 2011 at 4:00 am

Thanks for the info, Michelle! This may be my next “me” purchase.

  17. Destini on October 12, 2011 at 3:33 pm

This post just reminded me that I wanted to purchase some hot curlers. I love my hair when its flowing with curls. So does my husband!!

I am running out on my last break at work and picking some up!

P.S Your hair looks beautiful curled. I have only seen photos of you with it straight(which looks beautiful and healthy) but when its curly it just looks so thick and healthy. I am jealous of your hair. I have thin hair!

  18. Emily on October 12, 2011 at 3:34 pm

I feel super lame when I used the army green polish since my boyfriend’s an Army guy, but I’m obsessed this season. I just got OPI’s Uh-Oh Roll Down The Window and I love love it! That, and their Warm & Fozzie from the 2011 Muppets holiday line. It’s sparkly and fun!

  19. AJ on October 12, 2011 at 3:35 pm

A tutorial on the hot rollers would be awesome! My mom keeps trying to teach me, but alas–it never seems to stick! Another tutorial can’t hurt! (Your hair does look gorg in the picture, btw) ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Carly on October 12, 2011 at 3:35 pm

would love love love love love a video tutorial on curlers in the hair! Your hair always looks gorgeous ๐Ÿ™‚

  21. KaraLynn on October 12, 2011 at 3:37 pm

I would love a hot curler video! I have had a set for like ten years that I have tried a few times and it always looks bad so they have mostly just sat in my closet.

  22. Katie @ Peace Love and Oats on October 12, 2011 at 3:37 pm

Currently, there is zero color on my nails. But my favorites are either this bright pinky-purple, or OPI’s Lincoln Park in the Dark. The irony there is that I started wearing that color four years ago and one year ago I actually moved to Lincoln Park in Chicago. Haha never thought of that until now!

  23. Jill on October 12, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Right now I have on the Sally Hansen “Commander in Chic” that I bought last year. I love it. I now have several “greige” colors, haha. When these colors first started coming out I thought they looked like zombie-flesh (lol) but they’re actually very flattering!

  24. Melissa on October 12, 2011 at 3:40 pm

Do you put the rollers on wet hair? I love that Essie polish. I bought it the other day!

    • Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on October 12, 2011 at 4:06 pm

No, hot rollers and wet hair do not mix!

My thick+fine hair only curls when I’ve freshly showered and it’s freshly dried. Not damp, but still has that cool, soft, I-just-washed-my-hair feel. When that silky feeling goes away, it’s too late. At least for my hair. Someone with coarser hair may do well with using super-dry or slightly dirty hair, like Gina said. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Melissa on October 13, 2011 at 5:36 am

Thank you Michelle! I will avoid frying my hair off ๐Ÿ˜‰

  25. Kate on October 12, 2011 at 3:43 pm

id love a hot roller video I cant put them in for my life

  26. Beth on October 12, 2011 at 3:46 pm

I am also voting for the tutorial!!!

  27. Ashley on October 12, 2011 at 3:47 pm

I have to second everyone that mentioned a video about hot rollers! I can’t get it right to save my life and it never works! Would love to see how to do it correctly! My hair is soooo thick everything I do to it is ten times harder for me than the normal person!

BTW, My toes are Orange too! ๐Ÿ™‚

  28. Melissa on October 12, 2011 at 3:54 pm

Ohh hot rollers, I miss them! I chopped off my hair and right now it’s too short for them. But when I had longer hair I would always use hot rollers when I wanted to really spiff up my look, without too much effort ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Michelle on October 12, 2011 at 3:54 pm

You should definitely do a post on how to use the hot curlers. I’m kinda retarded when it comes to hair…

  30. Anna on October 12, 2011 at 3:55 pm

I’m so excited. The fashion page is alive again!!!

  31. Mellissa on October 12, 2011 at 3:56 pm

My hair will not hold a curl ever, fine and shoulder length make it difficult to style. Best I can do is a small chignon.

Nails today, Lion Around by Essie. A pretty peachy-pink but light army green is my next color.

  32. Chelsa on October 12, 2011 at 3:59 pm

Cute. I really like the teal. My toes are deep purple and my fingers are pearly white.

  33. Beth on October 12, 2011 at 4:00 pm

I also (like an above poster) need to step it up and realize a ponytail is not going to cut it as an adult. So I would love a tutorial on hot rollers! I’m also slacking in the nail polish department, hoping for a mani/pedi next week so I’m holding off on painting them myself for now.

  34. Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf on October 12, 2011 at 4:02 pm

Hot rollers are my go-to method of curling my hair. My hair is thick but superfine! There’s a very narrow window of time after I shower when my hair might hold a curl if I roll it. Curling irons typically don’t work for me (probably because my hair doesn’t cool while still in the iron). I really need to think of a new method of putting in the rollers, because the way I do it, it tends to look funky after it settles in a few hours. And I get those annoying curler kinks. Heh. ๐Ÿ™‚

  35. Anna @ On Anna's Plate on October 12, 2011 at 4:03 pm

My nails were gunmetal gray…but I took it off just this morning because two had chipped! I need a new shade!

  36. Kelsey on October 12, 2011 at 4:04 pm

I love the nail polish- I might have to get that at my manicure this weekend ๐Ÿ™‚

And I’d love a hot roller tutorial- mine always come out funky since my set has two sizes of rollers.

  37. Laura on October 12, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Yes a tutorial would be great!!

  38. Kristin on October 12, 2011 at 4:10 pm

I love this post!!!! I was trying to do a side braid today and i just cannot get used to going back, along the side of my head, i lose track of where i am!!! i can only do a straight up and down braid ๐Ÿ™ I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a curlers tutorial though!!! ๐Ÿ™‚ I LOVE curls!

  39. Katie on October 12, 2011 at 4:13 pm

please please pleeeeeease do a video post on curling hair! i need all the help i can get!

  40. AJ on October 12, 2011 at 4:14 pm

Please make a video, could you also do one with your curling iron? I have fine hair and am hopeless hopeless hopeless.

  41. Mary Ann on October 12, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I use hot curlers occasionally, usually just for big events. I love the teal polish! Right now my nail tips are purple and the rest of the nail is shimmery lavender…I gave myself a funky french manicure with masking tape! ๐Ÿ™‚

  42. Lauren @ Ultra Lauren on October 12, 2011 at 4:16 pm

I love the teal polish. I just bought some and my husband asked if I was going to a rave ๐Ÿ˜‰ and I’d love to see the hair tutorial. My hair is feeling pretty blah.

  43. Jerilynne on October 12, 2011 at 4:19 pm

I would love a video tutorial!!! I’ve always wanted to try hot rollers but I really have no idea what to do with them!

Also- you mentioned that you wash your hair every other day. How do you balance that with working out?? I try to make it to the gym at least 5 times a week, sometimes 6, and I feel like, if I work out I HAVE to wash my hair… but at the same time I know washing your hair every day isn’t good for it, I’ve been trying ot cut back but I don’t know how to pull it off without looking like something that got dragged out of the swamp!

  44. Haley @ Fit, Young, and Fabulous on October 12, 2011 at 4:20 pm

I’ve tried hot curlers, but I think I might have had an off-brand. My new favorite curling tool is my WAND!!! Loovee it! I also love, love, LOVE my three barrel waver!! My hair is naturally straight and a 3 barrel waver and wand save me so much time in the mornings before school! (:

  45. Laura on October 12, 2011 at 4:22 pm

I have grey on my nails right new that needs to be redone. I’m in a serious grey stage right now. My toes… they are neglected due to running…

  46. Krystina (Organically Me) on October 12, 2011 at 4:23 pm

I love your hair so much! I wish I could get mine to grow super long super fast – it’s in that awkward in between phase that totally blows.

  47. Mara @ what's for dinner? on October 12, 2011 at 4:24 pm

You know me and my nails ๐Ÿ™‚ Right now they’re lavender with an imprint of newsprint on them!

    • amy on October 12, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I saw a tutorial for using newsprint to print on your nails! I want to try it.

      • Mara @ What's For Dinner? on October 12, 2011 at 7:59 pm

Its super easy and looks SO COOL!!! It works with laser printed color pictures as well ๐Ÿ™‚

  48. Erin @ Running Tall on October 12, 2011 at 4:25 pm

Ooh I like the hot rollers thing. Video tutorial please! My hair is so long and there’s a lot of it so it’s a pain to curl with a curling iron.

LOVING army green nails! I’m going to request that next time I go for a mani.

  49. Elizabeth on October 12, 2011 at 4:27 pm

I cast another vote for the curler tutorial! Gorgeous; thanks for the [cheap] suggestion!

I saw this article today and it made me think of your site. Perhaps you’d be interested. This sounds like a spam but I swear it’s not. ๐Ÿ™‚
