We’ve been gone for too long…

Now itโ€™s time to bring it back.

Indian Food Wednesday!!!

After a brief (ok, really long) hiatus, we decided that it was high time we had some Indian food in our life. I had a crazy long day at work, and when the Pilot picked me up, I was more than ready to go on a little date with him ๐Ÿ˜‰

pilot (2)

We dined at New Delhi, which has incredible, fresh Indian delights. It was packed during dinnertime, too, which is always a good sign.

menu

Since it was really like a โ€œwelcome backโ€ party, we did it up right and ordered a Snack Plate to start ๐Ÿ™‚

snack plate

(Sheesh kebab, papadum, fried ballz of glory โ€“I have no clue what theyโ€™re called, but were like falafel- and samosas)

Dippers (onion chutney and mint-cilantro chutney)

dippers

and the Pilot enjoyed a Kingfisher beer + a mango lassi.

drinks

(I stole a couple of drinks of the lassi and it was perfection. Not too sweet and very refreshing)

Then they brought out the feast:

feast

Rice and lamb tikka masala for the Pilot, dal makahni for meeeeee (lentils!)

and roti boobs bubbles ๐Ÿ™‚

roti

Iโ€™d been missing out, my friends. Thank goodness itโ€™s back in my life ๐Ÿ˜‰

Has anyone else enjoyed an Indian feast lately? Are you an Indian food newbie? If so, hereโ€™s a post for ya.

Iโ€™m gonna take my baby ganoush to put on some black stretchy pantsโ€ฆ

see ya in the morning <3

xoxo

Gina

Todayโ€™s workout jam: โ€œGimme Datโ€ Ciara (the theme song for this post, heh heh)

Oooh, those are pakoras! Usually chickpea flour with veggies, onion etc in them. Love them! Though sometimes they can be super dry!

Glad you’re back on the Indian wagon! I made spinach paneer and no-butter butter chickpeas (Bal Arneson’s recipe..it’s delicious), whole wheat roti and brown basmati the other day. Every dish in my kitchen was dirty let me tell you!!!

Ah…mango lassis! What I missed most about Indian food after I had to give up gluten and dairy. I (kinda) recently made and posted on a non-soy, dairy-free mango lassi, and since then we’ve perpetually had frozen mango in our freezer. Obviously. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Happy day!

      • Mindy on May 26, 2011 at 12:02 am

oh similar to the commenter above, I made my own version of mango lassi today. All it had was plain almond milk, one ataulfo (sp?) mango, and some SW vanilla protein powder. Okay, so it’s not really mango lassi, but it was yummy!

      • Sarah Anne on May 26, 2011 at 12:14 am

i knew i should have linked! Will link entire east when i get home!

        • Sylvia on May 26, 2011 at 11:30 am

The vegan restaurant where I work has an amazing mango lassi, all it is is frozen mango, ice, coconut milk and lime juice

  3. Rachel @ The Perseverance Diaries on May 25, 2011 at 11:56 pm

Glad you got to enjoy that Indian food feast with your love!

It looks so tasty that I just may have to incorporate Indian food into my lunch tomorrow ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on May 25, 2011 at 11:58 pm

Do you have any tips on dairy free Indian food? I went once, but there wasn’t much I could eat and they weren’t accommodating!

  5. Mindy on May 26, 2011 at 12:00 am

We have Indian food often since we’re Indian, haha. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Those friend balls look like pakodas maybe? Fried batter, sometimes has veggies in the batter…but it could be something else, not sure.

Btw, you have got me hooked onto tempeh bacon. I rarely try faux meat products but since you talked about the tempeh bacon and I kept seeing it at WF, I finally bought some last week…and had to restock this week. hehe. I have been making TBLT sandwiches for the past three days…not very healthy, but it could be worse, right? Thanks for introducing me to it – I had never tried tempeh before.

Looks yummy! Have you ever had Burmese? We just had it for a bday dinner, and I swear you will think you have died and gone to heaven when you try their roti. Very different from Indian (which I also like).

  7. aditi on May 26, 2011 at 12:10 am

Pretty sure those yummy ballz were Pakoras

Love that you two went on a date together ๐Ÿ™‚ I just posted in my 10 year wedding anniversary post that unfortunately I am not one of those women who goes on dates with her husband but when I read about your dates with Pilot, it makes me want to somehow make time + a babysitter to do it!

Mango lassi…I made a mango + pineapple + mango milk (found it here in Aruba) smoothie the other day. I love lassis and mango and yours sounds awesome.

So happy you got your babba ganoush back on!

Ooh, can’t wait until I can have an Indian food date with my airman again, too (he also happens to lurv tikka masala). How’s it feel to get back to your usual date routines? We’ve got two months to go until we’re sharing an abode again.

Looks like an amazing feast – so glad you were able to enjoy it with the PILOT!! ๐Ÿ™‚

  13. Desi on May 26, 2011 at 1:03 am

Indian food is one of the things that I miss most about living in England. Instead of a McD’s on every corner there was some sort of Indian restaurant. I have just never been able to make my stuff at home taste quite like theirs. I will have to find a restaurant here near the base in Sin City soon though.

  14. melissa on May 26, 2011 at 1:32 am

I’m now drooling and currently googling indian restaurants in the Anchorage area… Hopefully I can celebrate next week! ๐Ÿ™‚

  15. being domUnique on May 26, 2011 at 1:41 am

Oooooh thanks for the link to your post about indian food for newbies! I am always too intimidated by the menu to go to indian restaurants, but with your advice I know I’ll be ordering something yummy! I’ve also heard buffets are a good idea for newbies…

The only time I eat Indian food is at lunch, at a buffet. I just can’t decide on one main Indian meal ever, I have to try it all!!!

  21. Cait @ Beyond Bananas on May 26, 2011 at 5:40 am

Yay for the return of Indian Food Wednesday. I’ve never really tried Indian food..but after looking at your pictures, I think I would like it!

  22. Gillian on May 26, 2011 at 6:08 am

Alright, now I seriously need to get my booty to little India for some real Indian food!!

  23. Parita on May 26, 2011 at 7:34 am

Yay! Glad Indian Food Wed is back in y’alls lives! I know I’m a little biased but I love Indian food. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I used to hate it when I was younger because we ate it every day. Now I crave my mom’s home cooked food.

You should try dosas if you haven’t yet. South Indian food is pretty healthy if it’s cooked right. I think Tucson has a S. Indian restaurant.

  24. Holly @ The Runny Egg on May 26, 2011 at 7:46 am

That food looks amazing!!! Roti boobs — that should have been the title of your post ๐Ÿ™‚

Mmmmm….Indian food. We just went out for Indian last weekend and I enjoyed the leftovers later, which is always glorious. I can’t believe I didn’t know I liked Indian Food until I was 28 or so! I was missing out.

  28. Mo on May 26, 2011 at 9:01 am

I’m not a big fan of spicy (bland Irish palette – so beer and potatoes it is!) – which makes me think I wouldn’t like Indian food. Thoughts of something that I might like knowing that? The pilot has such a warm, genuine smile – he is very photogenic!

  38. Shrinking Diva on May 26, 2011 at 11:31 am

Indian food looks really good! Maybe my bf and I will have some tonight before going to see Source Code! (I wanted to see Something Borrowed… but he saw Jane Eyre with me last month, so I gotta let him have this one! lol) Glad the Pilot is back with you.

  39. AJ on May 26, 2011 at 11:32 am

I LOVE me a Mango Lassi. It’s like a drug. I’ve gotta get my bf into regular Indian dining. The weird thing is, he isn’t super crazy about Indian food… and he’s INDIAN! haha! I don’t get it.

I made Indian last night and it was extremely delish.
However I think those fried balls of glory are onion bajia which are what I order every time I get Indian- they are amazing! Fried onions in chickpea flour. YUM! Glad you’re back on your IFW game ๐Ÿ˜‰

  48. Meghan on May 26, 2011 at 5:09 pm

Indian food usually intimidates me (so many options! so many unfamiliar names! so many spices!) but this post makes me want to take a crack at it again. Its not that I don’t like it – its totally yummers – but I feel like I need an Indian food guidance counselor of sorts and I do believe you’re filling that role ๐Ÿ™‚
