Slow cooker rotisserie chicken

It’s always hard to leave for work on Saturdays, when the Pilot and Oliv are home.

ย

At the same time, it’s pretty amazing that they get a daddy-daughter day each week.ย

NewImage

(Look at her face! “Yeah, just chillin’ in the pool with my daddy. You know”)

Yesterday, while I was Zumba-ing, they spent the afternoon at our friends’ house. Their daughter and Livi are a week apart, so they’re little besties. It was cute because Kelly was working, too, so the boys and the babies hung out together.

While I was Zumba-ing, this chicken was slow-cooking away to be ready for dinner:

Slow cooker chicken

I put it together on my lunch break- here’s what went into it (took less than 10 minutes)

-Sprayed the slow cooker with olive oil from the Misto

-Cleaned the chicken (removed the gross inner pack thing) and pat it dry

-Placed the chicken in the slow cooker and rubbed with melted butter, sea salt, paprika, garlic powder, and a little brown sugar (trick I learned from Pinterest)

-Added 1/2 chopped onion, 4 chopped carrots and 4 large, chopped red potatoes

-Lots of springs of fresh rosemary and thyme (also put a handful of each inside the chicken along with 1/2 lemon)

-Poured 2 C water around the sides, set it on high for 6 hours

Here’s what it looked like at the end:

Slow cooker chicken 2

The Pilot called it a “man meal” (I felt like I owed it to him after a night of salmon and spa salad) and it ended up being the perfect amount of food for the two of us, plus a giant plate of chicken and veggies we took over to our neighbor.

The end of a chocolate bar:

Chocolate bar

(breaking the last piece out of the wrapper)

Me: Oh my gooooooood. It’s gone already!

Pilot: Wait, is that the chocolate bar from last week?!

Me: No, this is the chocolate bar from yesterday.

Pilot: Ok, I was worried there for a second.

Chocolate has a very short life in this household.

I happily ate the last of the chocolate while relaxing with the Pilot and watching a show on TV. It’s been a very long time since I’ve gotten into anything and watch some shows for funsies every now and again (nothing substantial, and nothing that I ever feel like I missed out if I missed an episode, like “So You Think You Can Dance,” Kardashians and “Giuliana and Bill”). The last show I watched consistently was Grey’s Anatomy, when the Pilot and I first started dating (almost 7 years ago? Whooaaaa). I stopped watching it when the plot line fell down the drain and haven’t really gotten into anything until recently. Thanks to my friend Whitney, I’m loving the show “Girls.”

NewImage(Source)

It’s gloriously awkward, quirky and HILARIOUS. Whit described it to me as a modern Sex and the City, with the current economic state and social media platforms. The bonus is that it’s on HBO On Demand, so I can download and watch an episode whenever- I’ve only seen 4, but loved them all.

Time to get do the weekly meal plan/grocery run shebang over here, but I hope you have a very happy Sunday!

Don’t forget- Schweaty July cardio workout will be up in the am <3 (Your July workout calendar is here)

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about:ย Do you watch TV very often? When’s the last time you were INTO a show? Any awesome summery slow cooker recipes? All of my faves are more comfort-style foods, which aren’t quite as appetizing in the summer.

Chocolate does not last a day in my house. I always try to freeze it, but I love frozen chocolate!

    • Jen on July 8, 2012 at 12:58 pm

Frozen chocolate is the best in the summer!

      • Jackie on July 8, 2012 at 8:12 pm

        What chocolate is your favorite??

  2. Danielle on July 8, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Ah, those daddy-daughter days are the cutest!

I don’t watch television often but I definitely make time for Girls. So, so good. Enjoy the rest of the season!

  3. Melissa (Better Fit) on July 8, 2012 at 12:54 pm

I’ve heard of Girls- haven’t seen it, but heard it’s good! I’m just starting to watch Mad Men. I feel like I’m the last one on the planet to see it! I thought it was a slow burner- a pretty slow start, but was definitely intrigued and totally pulled in by the end of Season 1!

Looks like a fantastic easy slow cooker meal!

  4. Sam @ Better With Sprinkles on July 8, 2012 at 1:01 pm

I’ve been hearing so many things about Girls! I haven’t seen it yet, but so many people are talking about how hilarious it is. I’ve got a lot of free time this summer, so I just might have to check it out. ๐Ÿ™‚

The boyfriend got me into the Game of Thrones series…I watched the tv show religiously, currently reading the 5th book…slightly obsessed.

  5. caryn on July 8, 2012 at 1:07 pm

if you want to get into another show (i know that can be dangerous sometimes, lol) you might like “breaking pointe.” it’s a show that follows ballet dancers in a professional company, showing what it’s like for them in the company/at work and it gets into their personal lives too. it’s reality tv, but not in a jersey shore kinda way.

  6. Rachael H on July 8, 2012 at 1:07 pm

Girls is amazing – I was shocked to learn that Allison Williams (Marnie) is the daughter of Brian Williams, from NBC Nightly

    • melissa on July 8, 2012 at 1:50 pm

I just found that out too! Apparently she can sing as well.. you can youtube some of her performances. Great great great show though!!

  7. melanie on July 8, 2012 at 1:08 pm

I’m hooked on the show Girls too! My mom and I just watched all the episodes in a matter of a few days. It’s hilarious and the characters are so easy to relate to!

  8. Brigid on July 8, 2012 at 1:13 pm

I love the monthly calendar feature! I was a week behind on SSU and then travelling totally derailed me, so I’m going to get back on it starting tomorrow. After I finish, I will join in with the calendar workouts in August. Can’t wait!

As for TV, I haven’t had cable for years, so I watch very few shows through Hulu and Netflix. New Girl, Bones (Deschanel obsession, apparently), and The Amazing Race are the only ones I keep up with during the season, though I do miss Mad Men. I’m the same as you when it comes to the slow cooker. I like hearty bean dishes best in it.

  9. Rachel F on July 8, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Wait till you get to episode 6. It’s so good! I’d also recommend Game of Thrones and Homeland, if you’re looking for great shows. G.O.T. just finished it’s second season and Homeland’s second season starts in September.

    • Kristin on July 8, 2012 at 1:50 pm

ahhh i’ve become addicted to homeland! My hus and i watched the whole first season in a few days! haha! I couldn’t stop! I can’t wait for the 2nd season!

      • amanda on July 9, 2012 at 10:45 pm

Ohhhh, I’ve heard Homeland is really really great! I don’t have a TV but at some point I’ll try to watch this on dvd. I have a total girl crush on Claire Daines.

  10. Hillary on July 8, 2012 at 1:20 pm

I don’t have HBO, but I’m dying to watch Girls. I might need to buy a few episodes on iTunes!

My show addictions are Mad Men and Game of Thrones. Cannot miss an episode!

  11. Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie on July 8, 2012 at 1:31 pm

Omg Girls is such a great show! It’s scary how in touch they are with some 20-something’s personalities! I am also hooked on True Blood, it’s so addicting! And that pic of the pilot and livi is precious, how special she gets to have daddy-daughter date time every week!

  12. Amber @ Bring In-the-Pink on July 8, 2012 at 1:31 pm

That chicken looks amazing! My husband would love a good “man meal” like that! With scarce programming in the summer, we’ve resorted to catching up on shows that we don’t normally watch on Netflix online. White Collar has been our go-to this weekend!

  13. Brittany on July 8, 2012 at 1:32 pm

Love when I see guys spening time with their daughters. I saw a guy walk into the mall yesterday with his baby daughter. Daddy time is important to girls, big or small. I still love to hang out and go to dinner or a movie with my daddy!

  14. Lara on July 8, 2012 at 1:34 pm

I was reading your blog last night before bed, and then had a crazy dream that you asked us to babysit Livi right after our baby was born. It was mad. chaos. So funny!

  15. Amanda on July 8, 2012 at 2:04 pm

The only shows I watch on a weekly basis are all of the Real Housewives (except DC when it was on-I hated it), Teen Mom (ha!) and maybe the Kardashians (even though I’m pretty much over it). I also LOVED American Horror Story on FX.

  16. Maria on July 8, 2012 at 2:05 pm

I’m the same way as far as TV goes. I stopped watching Grey’s a while ago because it was getting pretty lame. I love the realities shows Keeping up, Pregnant in Heels, Juiliana and Bill. The two regular shows I watch are HBO shows too-True Blood and Girls. Bonus, that hubs will sit down and watch both of those with me ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. Jen in MN on July 8, 2012 at 2:10 pm

We used to be way into The Office….but it’s not as good these days. We own seasons 1-5 on DVD though!

Now my addiction is Mad Men. Cannot get enough of that show/the whole concept, and cannot miss an episode! So sad this season is over already.

  18. Suzanne on July 8, 2012 at 2:23 pm

What a sweet shot of the Pilot + Livi + Baby Friend!

Love Girls! Hilarious, isn’t it? They shoot in NYC, so it’s fun for me to see spots I know.

I am a TV addict, so I have lots of shows that I recommend.
Two that I am really into now: 2 Broke Girls and New Girl.
Kat Dennings and Zoey Deschanel are a hoot – love each one’s sense of humor.

Here’s a summer recipe that the husband and I are loving from ohsheglows:
Spicy Potato and Black Bean Burritos

  19. @pluvk on July 8, 2012 at 2:24 pm

She is too cute with her shades! I love it! It makes me want to lounge around by the pool and look cool, too. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am total TV-aholic. It’s terrible! Now I have no idea what to watch (since it’s summer). I used to be a Grey’s fanatic, too, but I stopped watching a few seasons back. They lost me with the whole Izzie having a relationship with her dead fiance. Now that Netflix is adding old shows, I’ve been re-hooked on Dawson’s Creek (showing my age! Ha!) and Charmed… both of which drive my hubs insane! LOL

  20. Emily on July 8, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Aww…those sunglasses are precious! She is adorable.

I just started watching Girls and I’m loving it! It’s definitely quirky and different, which I really appreciate. I also started watching The Newsroom which is awesome. A complete, polar opposite of girls but addicting, nonetheless!

  21. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on July 8, 2012 at 2:52 pm

Slow cookers are a God-send, and there’s nothing cuter than daddy/daughter time. ๐Ÿ™‚ I mainly keep the TV on for background noise, but my husband and I are really into watching Duck Dynasty. It’s hilarious!

  22. Averie @ Averie Cooks on July 8, 2012 at 2:56 pm

Ok now I have to watch Girls. I actually didn’t want to get into it but after your description, it has my name written all over it!

Great job on the slow cooker meal. I need to dust mine off. It’s been a year ++ that I think I’ve used it…whoops!

  23. TeriLyn [a foodie stays fit] on July 8, 2012 at 3:10 pm

i’ve heard good things about Girls. I’ll have to check it out!

shows I’m obsessed with, if you need another newbie: Mad Men, Downton Abbey, Arrested Development (no longer on TV but available on Netflix & HuluPlus), and Revenge. ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. amanda on July 8, 2012 at 3:16 pm

A few of my girlfriends really like that show “The New Girl” with Zooey Deschanel. Personally, I need a little low brow tv in my life, so I’m currently watching “Love in the Wild.” It’s less melodrama than the Bachelor/Bachelorette, plus Jenny McCarthy is absolutely hilarious. And oh! I second the motion to watch Downton Abbey (both seasons). You’ll be hooked by the second episode.

  25. Danielle@cleanfoodcreativefitness on July 8, 2012 at 3:24 pm

I love that picture of Livi! So cute! The expression is priceless ๐Ÿ™‚ Chocolate doesn’t last in my house either! I can’t keep it around otherwise it will gone in seconds! I need to start watching Girls! I keep hearing how good it is but haven’t gotten a chance to watch it yet.

  26. Ali @ Peaches and Football on July 8, 2012 at 3:29 pm

I’ve never seen anyone put a whole chicken in a slow cooker but that’s something I have to try now!!

The two besties look adorable – I think they love the water ๐Ÿ™‚

  27. Lisa on July 8, 2012 at 3:31 pm

I love Girls. It’s so quirky and awkward, but totally relatable. Eee that pool picture is so adorable! I definitely am a reality tv show watcher, I just can’t get enough of those hot messes. Especially the Real Housewives of OC. I love them all.

  28. Patty on July 8, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Boardwalk empire & Hung. I haven’t seen Girls yet but I’m dying to see it.

  29. Kaylee on July 8, 2012 at 3:45 pm

I like the Canadian show ‘Rookie Blue’. It’s a bit like Grey’s (in that everyone sleeps with everyone), but a bit less dramatic.

Also good: Castle, True Blood, Community, and Game of Thrones. My boyfriend will watch all of those with me.

I just started watching Girls..only on episode 2 so far!

  30. Georgia on July 8, 2012 at 4:07 pm

I loooove girls! If you haven’t seen the movie Tiny Furniture you must. Lena Dunham (creater and lead of Girls) also wrote and starred in it.

PS My boyfriend joined me in your week 3 workout at the gym on Friday and hes been quite sore ๐Ÿ˜‰

  31. Irina @ Chocolatea Time on July 8, 2012 at 4:09 pm

I become obsessed with shows very quickly. It’s unfortunate and annoying but my OCD often makes me stick through a show’s entire season. The last show I loved was ‘New Girl’ – such a cute and quirky show!

  32. sandy on July 8, 2012 at 4:21 pm

same here…last show I watched with a passion was Grey’s. my then boy-friend and I were in alternative medicine school and we couldn’t miss it! now i’m practicing and don’t watch any TV!! crazy to think back..

  33. Emily on July 8, 2012 at 4:54 pm

Daddy/daughter time = so presh. And I love the thing about your friend Kelly’s daughter being baby-besties with Liv- when I was a baby, our neighbors had a little girl four months after my parents had me and we would play all the time. Now we’re both twenty and still friends! Lifelong friendships ftw ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Julie on July 8, 2012 at 5:03 pm

It’s terrible but I love “Love in the Wild.” I always watch CSI when I can – it’s my go-to show and “MasterChef” is always a winner!

What kind of chocolate bar did you have there?

  35. Mari on July 8, 2012 at 6:31 pm

I’ve recently stumbled upon Parks and Recreation….the first 3 seasons are on Netflix…it’s HILARIOUS!!

  36. Jennie (in Wonderland) on July 8, 2012 at 7:20 pm

I haven’t gotten ‘into’ a show for years… True Blood is sorta awesome but so different to the books that I find it hard to enjoy (need my Sookie/Eric and less Bill), I love ‘The Newsroom’ but it’s so new that who knows how it will do… haven’t really found anything else. I miss the old days… SATC, Buffy, Friends, Seinfeld… I am aging myself here ๐Ÿ˜‰

LOL at the chocolate. I’m not a big sugar person (my fiance is though) and every time I buy a chocolate bar for myself (usually sea salt caramel or peanut butter chocolate of some description) he goes, “OH, so I guess that will be around for the next year… let me guess, you’ll have one square a day!” Bahahaha, so sad and so true.

  37. Joelle (on a pink typewriter) on July 8, 2012 at 7:22 pm

Love that quick chicken recipe! I’ve been looking for a good slowcooker chicken recipe.. I;m never sure what to do with my crockpot, as silly as that sounds!

  38. Sara on July 8, 2012 at 7:26 pm

I know its bad, but I love Nurse Jackie. It’s really the only program I record to watch later (minus ads, haha).

Livi looks so chilled in her hat and sunnies, soaking up the vitamin D, impressing the boy babies.

  39. Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers on July 8, 2012 at 8:00 pm

I made the hubs a very summery slow cooker supper tonight. He got slow cooked, pulled bbq chicken that I put into a quesadilla with shredded cheese. I had separate vegan quesadillas. Both were delicious!

  40. Lisa on July 8, 2012 at 8:32 pm

Can’t get much cuter than the Pilot & the two little ladies!
I watched both Seasons of Downton Abbey & loved it.
Just made BBQ pulled chicken in my crockpot the other day.

  41. Courtney on July 8, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Is this show on Netflix? I haven’t heard of it before today, and a few people are mentioning it on the blogs!

  42. Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets on July 8, 2012 at 9:54 pm

    1) That picture of Tom in the pool with the girls is too cute for words
    2) You are a super star making dinner on your lunch break!
    3) Chocolate does also not last in my house
    4) I don’t really watch much TV, but I’ve heard SO many good things about “Girls”. I’ll definitely have to sit down & check it out!

  43. AJ on July 8, 2012 at 9:58 pm

    Gorgeous picture.

Another TV-aholic here, some of my favourites are New Girl, Cougar Town, Fringe, Homeland, Revenge, Damages, Rizzoli & Isles, Castle, NCIS LA, I could go on…

I sometimes watch Army Wives, and I always wonder if it’s anything at all like reality??

  44. Diane on July 8, 2012 at 10:37 pm

i love your recipes. Thank you! I am hooked on amazeballs and I know my husband will love this chicken recipe.

we live in so cal. we’ve had watermelon on tap over here lately.
we don’t have tv or cable -i’ll have to see if can stream.

Just popped my version of your ‘man meal’ in our slow cooker for Pat. He’s gonna love you/me tonight ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’ve been feeding him only veggies since we came back from our detox vacay. At least I know he’s sorted for dinner tonight – thanks for the inspiration!

I’ve been wanting to watch that show! I’ve been needing a new show to get into. Right now I’m actually catching up on the 8th season of Grey’s Anatomy and I’m really liking it! I agree it went down the drain for a while, but it’s gotten much better!
