Fall and Comfy

Hi friends! How was your Friday? Hope you had a wonderful start to your weekend 🙂 I’m so glad ya enjoyed the restaurant dining post!

I utilized those skillz at dinner tonight:

[warning: iPhone photos ahead]

chips and salsa

We ate at Zivaz, which is pretty much like the Mexican version of Pei Wei 😀 Of course, I enjoyed some chips and salsa

and soup + salad

soup and salad

Bella and I were out and about this afternoon:

[I usually drop her off at the madre’s while I run errands so she can hang out with people]

and it was a combo of productivity and laying low.. I’m still fighting whatever this cold/allergy/ick is.

But, I really believe that there are magical healing powers in pumpkin spice lattes 😉

psl

My fall drink of choice is the occasional short soy decaf latte with 1 pump of pumpkin spice.

Autumn in a cup.

It was amazing, but it would have been even better with almond milk 😉

Speaking of, check out the pic that Janiek sent me:

In Amsterdam, you can have your latte with soy OR almond milk…..

Maybe that’s a hint that it’s on its way to the states? (please?!)

The other exciting event of the evening was when the Pilot and I checked out mattresses for the new bed frame.

080abb41559940369847b72220a53dca_7

It was kind of nice testing out all of the potentials – I think we decided on one. It’s going to make our tiny full-sized bed feel extra wonky tonight 😉

I’m going to call it an early night. Fingers crossed that I wake up feeling better and teaching tomorrow isn’t a legendary disaster.

See ya tomorrow!

xoxo

Gina

I used to really LOVE all those things – but then I started to think about the sugar and (and the 4 bucks for one) and not get them:(

Sana- Peppermint white mocha is at Starbucks year round, if you just ask for it 🙂 It’s just that sometimes it feels so wrong to get when its 100 degrees out!

I LOVE Pumpkin Spice lattes! My absolute favorite thing to do is sit in the coffee shop on a cold day, reading a book and drinking a pumpkin spice latte. It’s heaven!

I am really amazed that the quality of the I-phone pictures! You must admit, they are no where NEAR as terrible as most cell phone pictures (hello my space.) I hope your bed doesn’t feel to “wonky” tonight, and that you feel like a million bucks tomorrow! Sending you all the healing vibes in the world! As well a positive almond milk thoughts too 😉

What size bed are you looking at? We traded up to a California King last year and HAVE NOT LOOKED BACK! you snuggle when you want to and then the rest of the night it’s almost like sleeping alone 🙂

    Dinner looked amazing 🙂

Apple cider is one of the best parts of fall for me. But pumpkin spice is good, too! I’m super jealous of your location… I love NC, but I miss my family in Tucson :-/

YAY King size! We splurged on a King Tempurpedic mattress last year and it was one of the BEST investments we’ve ever made. The Tempurpedic really lives up to the hype, we had zero intentions of getting one until we checked it out at the store. We had been sleeping on a temporary crappy mattress that was way too small for us, and every time my husband tossed and turned it would wake me up… and I was miserable and cranky all the time from sleep deprivation, which of course wasn’t helping our relationship! The larger Tempurpedic erased all that – he can do whatever he wants on his half and I sleep peacefully through the night, and our marriage is flourishing. 🙂 Not to sound like a commercial, but I love ours so much that I figured I’d share, it’s an investment but one that I literally thank myself for every time I crawl into bed. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2011 at 12:50 am

That’s so good to know because that’s the one we’ll prob get
Did it smell like chemicals when it arrived?
Does it feel hot to sleep on?
Those are the only negative things I’ve read online

      • Postdoc on September 10, 2011 at 1:03 am

YAY!!! Seriously, it’s absolutely amazing. Totally life-changing. And I really do think about it literally every night, how happy I am that we decided to splurge on it. 🙂 When we go to hotels now, we actually look forward to going home because our mattress is actually better! I think it smelled a little like chemicals but nowhere near as bad as I had read online (I was a little worried, probably read the same things you did!). We left the sheets off and window open and just aired it out during the day, and it was totally fine. As for the heat issue, I think that might have been true for the older Tempurpedic mattresses when the mattresses were just one layer of solid foam, but these days they build them in various layers and do things to really promote airflow, so we’ve had zero problems with the “heat-trapping” people talk about online (something I was also worried about, having read the same things). Of course, everyone’s different, but we didn’t notice either of those negatives even though we had read about them. We adore ours and would buy ours again in a heartbeat! Let us know how it goes with whatever you decide to get. 🙂 Very exciting!

      • Melissa on September 10, 2011 at 8:24 am

We had friends just return theirs because of the chemical smell. I wish I had had the chance to talk to them before they did. We had a great salesperson when we bought ours and he gave us some great tips. First, pour a whole box of baking soda all over the bed and keep it on there for most the day and then just vacuum it up when you’re ready to make the bed. We repeated this step for a few days as I’m especially sensitive to smell. The smell was gone in no time. Another tip he recommended was that you walk/jog on top of it for the first few days to soften it up and stretch the foam. I actually preferred it when it was firmer but we’re both really happy with it. Hope you enjoy yours!!

        • Fitnessista on September 10, 2011 at 4:07 pm

          awesome tips, thank you!!
do you think the chemical smell is from something toxic in the mattress? what is it? that’s the only thing that’s creeping me out, but i will def do the baking soda trick

          • Postdoc on September 10, 2011 at 4:34 pm

I think it’s just because it’s a giant piece of foam and therefore a manufactured material, that it kinda smells like plastic/foam; just smells different than your standard mattress. And it comes delivered in a plastic bag, and it was probably placed in the plastic bag soon after manufacturing which trapped the odors. Sorta like the “new car smell” but not as nice! But it’s not nearly as bad as I had read online, within a few days it’s gone. And at least our store offered us a pretty big window where we could return or at least exchange it if we hated it – but we love it. 🙂

You can choose between soy and almond milk in Canada too – safe bet it will be in the states shortly!

Shopping for a new bed is funnnnnnnn. I went from a twin to a king… and then my fiance moved in. He’s funny…. I work nights so when he has the bed to himself he sleeps diagonally, with ALL the pillows. It looks like a mountain with feet sticking out the bottom…. hilarious!

  15. Kristin on September 10, 2011 at 2:07 am

Well don’t worry Gina, Almond milk has made it to a couple of the coffee shops in Phoenix, so I’m sure it will migrate to Tucson. I agree as well, Almond milk lattes are just way more ahhmazing then soy.

  16. Maren on September 10, 2011 at 2:12 am

Hey Gina! Love your blog read it all the time 🙂 just wanted to warn you that unless Starbucks changed their pumpkin syrup recipe- it has dairy in it. I found out the hard way (I have a very sensitive dairy allergy) so from now on I ask all coffee shops if their syrups have dairy- I haven’t found a pumpkin spice without one yet. I’m not sure if you eliminated dairy all together or just shy away from it most of the time but wanted to give you the heads up! A great alternative I use- trader joes has a seasonal pumpkin butter I use to flavor my coffees and teas in the winter. A couple teaspoons is plenty and It’s dairy free and super good- just have to wait for it to make it’s fall debut!

Starbucks in Europe is way tastier than in the U.S…..ohhh my, their cream is real cream!!!

  18. jenny on September 10, 2011 at 3:14 am

Some coffee shops in Nashville have the option of rice milk!! I do wish they would have almond milk though.:(

  21. Sara on September 10, 2011 at 5:31 am

Yup, they sell a lot of things in those Amsterdam cafes that you can’t get anywhere else. 😉 I’m not sure that ‘special’ brownies will be making an appearance any time soon in the U.S., even though it’s one way of increasing your intake of greens.

    • janiek on September 10, 2011 at 6:57 am

Haha your comment made me laugh out loud.

  22. Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga on September 10, 2011 at 6:50 am

Your decaf pumpkin action makes me want a pumpkin latte and unlike 99% of the blog world, I dont even have that much over the top craze for pumpkin things…but now I want one! 🙂

Congrats on deciding on a mattress you BOTH can agree on. <— no small feat!

Hope you're feeling better in the a.m.

  23. Amelia on September 10, 2011 at 7:46 am

I had my first of the season tall, soy, decaf, 1 pump pumpkin spice latte last weekend. Very yummy! To think that there are normally 3 pumps of pumpkin flavor in a tall is shocking to me. Who can drink something so sweet? I was debating on calling my S’bux and asking if I could bring in a mug of almond milk for my latte today. I’m trying to avoid soy and milk and I don’t mix too well these days.

    Love your shoes!

  24. Rebecca on September 10, 2011 at 8:04 am

An option for almond (and rice) milk would be amazing. Hopefully this comes stateside soon!

  25. Chris on September 10, 2011 at 8:11 am

We just bought a Sealy Tempurpedic mattress last week.. Waiting for it’s arrival 🙂
We tested out many a mattress and all the salesmen said there were the tempurpedic’s that were “hot” and those that were “cool” We got the “cool” one-which has a layer of gel which makes it cool to the touch and will feel great on those hot summer nights. I cant wait to get it and try it out. I will have to keep my nose open for the chemical smell, I never heard that. thanks for the head’s up on that one!

    • Fitnessista on September 10, 2011 at 4:10 pm

ooohh i didn’t know about that- we’ll have to ask for a “cool” option when we go back today

  26. Lauren on September 10, 2011 at 8:21 am

I got a Michael Kors rose gold watch at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this summer. I thought an oversized watch would be too big on me too, but I LOVE IT!!!!! It really is unique and I love what it adds to an outfit.

  28. Megan @ The Detoxinista on September 10, 2011 at 10:56 am

Ahh! I would LOVE it if Starbucks finally jumped on the almond milk bandwagon! A lot of local coffee shops here in Los Angeles have that option, so Starbucks needs to do it ASAP!

P.S. Those are the cutest pair of Tom’s I’ve ever seen. 😀

Get ready, Gina! I had a FunRun planned today to benefit our local police dept, a baby shower, and a birthday party. Five year old woke up with the pukies so it’s all off. Poor baby love. He’s so sick. Plans will change quickly, but you’ll be glad to do it for your baby girl!
