market fresh
Hi friends! Howโs the day going? Thank you so, so much for your wonderful comments, tweets, emails and texts about the launch of โHIIT It!โ Itโs an exciting day, and so thankful to all of you.
This weekend was a fun and relaxing one, with lots of time spent outside. Sunday afternoon, we decided to hit up the Hillcrest farmerโs market.
It makes me laugh to think that in Tucson it was hard for me to keep succulents alive, and here, massive ones burst out of the sidewalks.
The farmerโs market was packed as usual, and they have an incredible selection of vendors: produce, mushrooms, art, candles, genie pants (!), green juice, almost any international food you could wish for, seafood, desserts, and flowers.
Liv requested one of these:
and we also shared a green fix smoothie. By โshare,โ I mean she left me about 10% of it. ๐
While she was drinking the smoothie, I was enjoying sips of this spicy watermelon juice that the Pilot picked up.
And I got something that is probably in my top 5 street food list: THE BITCHINโ BOWL. (<โ thatโs really the name of it)
There is a vendor at the market called โBitchin Sauceโ which is an almond-based savory sauce. They have a ton of flavors (garlic, chipotle, cilantro, classic, etc.) and also have bowls, which include brown rice, black beans, tons of veggies, and of course, lots of Bitchinโ Sauce. I got the standard bowl (brown rice and black beans) with everything (cabbage, jalapeรฑos, green onion, cilantro, tomatoes and avocado) with chipotle sauce and an egg on top. IT WAS EVERYTHING.
What did you do this weekend? Whatโs your favorite farmerโs market find? I love that the Tucson market has prickly pear popsicles.
Time to get ready for spin! See ya in the morning with an INSANE protein candy bar recipe.
xoxo

That bowl looks amazing!!
I’m loving your book! I got mine on Friday and have devoured it. i look forward to reading your blog posts every day because your personality shines through, and your book is no different! Congratulations!!
Quick question- if I sauteed veggies or brown a protein in a healthy fat for dinner, would I write that down as a fat in my journal?
Thanks again for all you do for your readers!
I’ve been known use my finger to get the last of the Chipotle Bitchin Sauce out of the container;)
On Friday I did a kickbox fusion class in the morning and a 100 minute master Zumba class in the evening. I am literally just feeling normal again in the leg region, but it was all worth it to discover that insane fitness followed by a couple beers is the best post-holiday combo ever (I swear there was much veggie and lean protein consumption earlier in the day! ๐ ).
i just started your book too and i can’t wait to devour it!
i also am praying my husband and i get stationed in San Diego from Hawaii!
congrats on the launch <3
My boyfriend and I love the Farmer’s Market and typically go every Sunday. It is very close by to our home and we stop on our way after church. We always find the most delicious things!
Oh god killing time online trying to figure out what I want for dinner and now i know the answer is…. that bowl..to bad i’m in Boston!
Sadly my weekend didn’t involve any Bitchin’ Sauce (although you’re really making me wish that it had!) My favourite market finds are usually enormous butternut squashes and honeycrisp apples, but fresh veggie juices are always awesome too!
WHAT!? Since when do they have Bitchin’ Bowls? Is that new?? I love the Bitchin Sauce and the guys who work there. I need one of those!!
Wow that bowl looks really good, I’ve had the bitchin’ sauce as a sample before but they never had bowls for sale- maybe this is a new thing or only at certain farmers markets and not at ours in oceanside! The sauce actually reminds me of the mmm sauce Caitlinhtp ( I think?) used to make which was really good.
Would you say the farmers market is better than going to trader Joe’s?
That bowl looks SO insanely delicious!! My favorite farmer’s market find is jam. I loveee freshly made strawberry rhubarb jam and that’s usually the only place I can find it!
I buy Bitchin Sauce on the regular at our Whole Foods in SF! My weekend included a lot of yoga and SoulCycle, some cooking and wine and a LOT of relaxing! Happy New Year!
Congrats on the book launch! (Random question: what nail polish are you wearing holding the delicious green juice? Gorgeous color!)
It’s a true sign of authenticity when a fit person’s kid likes green juice! Love that she drank most of it!! I hope to have cute little kale-loving babies one day haha
That BOWL… if I ever come visit San Diego I definitely want to try it!
So excited for you and the launch of HIIT It!, obvi. ๐
Awesome post! I need to make it to the farmers market in SF much more often. You just can’t beat the level of freshness in EVERYTHING and it makes clean eating 100x more awesome.

That bitchin’ bowl looks very tasty ๐
I mostly spent this weekend recovering from the holidays. I was sick, then worked a ton, then had family come in to town. It was nice to not really do much for a few days.
I’ve been to that farmers market and LOVED it! We also hit up the Bitchin’ sauce booth and took a few goodies home with us. Their bars are delicious! I have the same problem when I “share” juice with my son. There’s never any left for me!
I still haven’t found a good farmers market in Phoenix. Who would think in a city this large there wouldn’t be a good one? I really miss Tucson…
I LOVE the Bitchin’ Sauce! I always get a couple when I’m at the Little Italy farmers market on Saturdays. I pack them on ice for the drive back to OC. I’ll have to try the Hillcrest farmers market for their bowls.
I’ve heard of Bitchin Sauce. I’ll have to give it a try!
that. bowl.
I think I might have to recreate it at home here soon… my pregnant mind is telling me to do so ๐
You make me want to move! Always looks so pretty in SD with fun things to do and check out. I really need to escape the winter blahs here! That bowl looks so awesome! Yum!
I was at the Hillcrest Farmer’s Market on Sunday afternoon too! It’s by far my favorite out of all of the ones in SD and my second fave would have to be the one in Little Italy.
Aren’t the Bitchin’ sauce guys the best? I LOVE the chipotle one – we made a chicken soup with it that was bananacakes!
I am craving a green smoothie now!!! Definitely need to make one tonight, there are no places here where you can buy them.
I love the Swiss specialities sellers at the farmers market with spicy dried meat and loads and loads of Swiss cheese to sample.
I got your book in the mail over the weekend! I am excited to really get into it!
amazing! thank you so much!
OMG is that an egg on top too? That looks amazing. I need to try to recreate this!
YES. ahhhh!
Love the Hillcrest farmer’s market. I meant to go early on Sunday but only made it there the last 10 min as everyone was cleaning up… at least I was still able to grab some free samples! ๐ I’ll definitely have to try the Bitchin’ Bowl next time it looks SO good.
you would love it!!
OMG I want a bitchin’ bowl right now!!! So jealous of your fresh market options even in January. It’s supposed to feel like -19 tomorrow morning here in Kansas City ๐
Random, but speaking of b*tches…. did you see this on Popsugar’s gift guide?

Can’t wait for the return of Scandal!
hahah i need it!!
That bowl looks terrific! I was going to order the sauce but the shipping is $24! So I found this and I’ll try to make my own!

that is INSANE. probably because they keep it cold for shipping? STILL. i will check out the recipe!
I’d be interested in your take. I just made the chipotle version, with half the chipotle. Next time I might halve the garlic, too. I don’t know what to compare it to! It’s good but will probably be better on the copycat bowl I have planned for tonight!
how was your bowl?! i’ll let you know if i give the recipe a try!!
omg that bowl!!!!
That bowl looks amazing!!!
That bowl looks amazing!! It’s been a while since I’ve been to the Farmer’s Market since they are typically closed here from Nov.-April because of the cold weather, but I can’t wait to head to the Charlottesville one in the spring. They always have an amazing assortment of unique vendors!
