How do you Nooch?

Hi guys 😀 How are ya?? Thank you for the sweet comments on the lackluster meal and the pilot’s swoonability– he’s a keeper, I tell ya 🙂

Heaby’s created a monster.

ice cream

I happily munched that bowl of protein ice cream after this morning’s weights sesh (back and biceps)- it was just what the doctored ordered.

After that, I replenished our grocery stash:

groceries

Bet you can guess which items belong to whom 😉

I get asked quite often how much we spend on groceries. I will tell you it’s a lot, despite the fact that I budget wisely and shop for deals. Today’s trip was exactly $100 and everything is organic, except for the bread, herbs and Mexican shredded cheese. Not too shabby, and that food will last us until the end of the week.

After putting the goods away, I made a very refined ants on a log to snack on 😉

ants

Personally, I detest raw celery (cooked is ok but raw makes me SHIVER), so using romaine was pretty bueno 🙂

-4 romaine leaves with 1 T jalapeno hummus (Wild Garden brand) on each lead

-6 grape tomatoes sliced in half

-sprinkle of cumin

AWESOME little snack!

Yesterday, when I put the call out for reader’s request ideas, I got a request for nutritional yeast uses.

I <3 Nooch

nooch

The nutritional stats are stellar:

nooch (2)

(complete protein –8g per serving!- and awesome vegetarian source of B vitamins as well as folate)

I adore the cheezy taste,

but I’m not too creative with it.

I use nooch on eggs, salads,

in kale chips

kalechips1

on popcorn (with Earth Balance and sea salt)

popcorn2

and pasta,

pastaprimavera1

(pasta primavera recipe is *here*)

but that’s pretty much where it ends.

Have you tried nutritional yeast before?? What are your favorite uses for it? I know Averie has a ton of awesome ideas (like her peanut butter cups!) and I’d love to hear how you nooch 🙂

I’m back to work, then TurboFire-ing it up, then back to work again, and to the wives’ coffee. Whew!

Enjoy the rest of your day <3

Gina

Good reader request! Thanks to you I’m obsessed with that stuff 😉 I’m enjoying it on my salad right now, heh. Another favorite is on steamed broccoli, spiralized zucchini, and pasta sauce 🙂 Mmmmm

  2. Hanna on July 13, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Oh awesome!! Thanks for the ideas! Now that i think of it, my mom used to put nutritional yeast on popcorn for my family when i was little. I remember thinking “where did she find powdered cheese??” : )
The only place I can find nutritional yeast here in Portland is at this local health foods store we have, but driving out of my way is waay worth it.

  3. Erin @ A Girl and Her Mutt on July 13, 2010 at 5:12 pm

I love nutritional yeast. I’ve started adding mine to oatmeal to make a savory oats dish.

  4. Jessica @ How Sweet It Is on July 13, 2010 at 5:14 pm

I use it the ways you do too, but also on most veggies (since I hate them), and even to make cheesy sauces! I seriously love nooch so much. And $100 – not bad at all! I’d love to spend that *little.* 🙂 I’m assuming when the Pilot is deployed, etc, it’s probably less, right?

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2010 at 5:17 pm

haha when the pilot is deployed, i could eat off $40 for an entire week. it’s his expensive meats and cheeses, and kiddie cereals and snacks that are the most expensive 😉

  5. Jamie Marie on July 13, 2010 at 5:14 pm

I love it on toast and brown rice. Sometimes I just love to lick the bottom of the bowl when I put it on popcorn…
I am an avid follower of your blog and I recommend it to all of my friends. I live in Germany and work on base over here..(OPSEC haha).
I personal train and teach Spin and Zumba. You were/are kinda my inspiration. Thank you for all you do. I was curious if you and the pilot have ever considered being stationed overseas?

    • Fitnessista on July 13, 2010 at 5:16 pm

that is so awesome! are you at spang? we were thinking of putting in for it… 🙂

      • Jamie Marie on July 13, 2010 at 5:38 pm

No, in Ramstein. I received my Personal trainer Cert. in Spangdahlem though. It’s a nice base. Every time I see all your travel pics, I think man…they would have a blast over here!!!

  6. Kristina on July 13, 2010 at 5:15 pm

I LOVE your version of ants on a log!! 🙂

    (I am NOT a raisin fan…)

    🙂

  7. Alycia @ Fit n Fresh on July 13, 2010 at 5:17 pm

That’s seriously not a lot on groceries – you go girl! And I love the nooch as well. I like to put it all over homemade baked french fries with some paprika, onion salt and garli powder. Seriously yum.

  8. brittney on July 13, 2010 at 5:18 pm

    Gotta try the nooch.

  9. Hilary @ Purelicious on July 13, 2010 at 5:19 pm

    I LOVEEEE Nooch!!
So funny you posted this question, because literally just last week I posted my new favorite recipe that uses nooch! It’s a cheeze-y hummus 🙂 Vegan, gluten free, super easy and totally delicious! Basically just a combo of chickpeas, nooch, sesame seeds, and some seasonings. You should def check it out and let me know what you think if you try it!

  10. Laura on July 13, 2010 at 5:21 pm

I love it on popcorn, just like everyone does. 🙂 I also sprinkle it on the rockstar’s (my dog) food. I’ve heard it’s good for them too.

  11. Courtney @ Three Months on July 13, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I have not tried it, but between you and Angela over at Oh She Glows – I’m being very tempted! 🙂

  12. Carrie on July 13, 2010 at 5:36 pm

That’s not too bad! I spend between $30-60 on groceries for 2 meat eaters (though not too much and rarely red meat) and maybe 50%-75% organic. I wish I could spend more on organic veggies and better meat, but it’s not always an option. Oh and fish! I would love to have more fish. Lucky my husband is getting into fishing. 😀

    I <3 nooch on popcorn.

  13. Michelle on July 13, 2010 at 5:36 pm

I love to put yeast in with some orange juice in the blender, I think it’s yummy 🙂

  14. Maggie on July 13, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I love your ants on a log! Awesome idea 🙂

I always eat nooch on salads or in mac n “cheese”. It’s especially awesome with kale anything.

  15. Tasha on July 13, 2010 at 5:42 pm

I feel like I’m the only foodie that doesn’t like nutritional yeast =( I really wanted to like it when I first tried it after hearing all the great things about it. But since I work in a lab, and have used plenty of LB Broth and done bacterial cloning (the scientists out there know what I’m talking about); the smell and taste of nutritional yeast is too much like E.Coli. After trying it on some toast, I had to throw the rest away because I almost puked. Sad thing, since it’s so good for you!

  16. Amanda on July 13, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Try peeling the outside part of your celery. I think you would like it a lot more. Thats the only way I can eat raw celery.

  17. Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman on July 13, 2010 at 6:05 pm

I’ve never tried it, but I’m intrigued. I wonder how close to cheese it tastes. I fear that I’ll find it gross and have a whole lot of it leftover. Actually, reading Tasha’s comment that might be true. It smells like E. coli? Delightful.

  18. Jo on July 13, 2010 at 6:08 pm

I love nutritional yeast! I put it in the gazpacho I made this evening as a “creamer”. Yum 🙂

  19. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on July 13, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Hi Beautiful! Thanks for the linkback to my PB Cups!

I actually have a post with 12 nooch recipes all in one post…from my newly minted “Spicy Doritos” Cheezy Dip to Kale Chips to PB Cups to Mac N Cheeze. Feel free to delete this comment, I hate to link drop…sorry…but here it is
    http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2010/03/nutritional-yeast-nooch-info-10-recipes.html

I love nooch and it’s SUCH an awesome source of B Vitamins and Vegan Protein and I also touched on some things in my post like will nutritional yeast cause you to “get yeast” and other misconceptions like that 🙂

Anyway girl, I have totally been thinking about you. I dedicated my yoga practice this morning to you. Sending light, love, peace right over your way 🙂

    xoxo

      thank you, friend <3

  20. Doc on July 13, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I do a nutritional yeast queso with cashews and red pepper that gets rave reviews…but I like to include the nooch in salad dressings for a creamy/cheese feel ala vegan thousand island or tahini dressings.

Also, I’m a HUGE fan of nutritional yeast and the the excellent nutritional stats! I’m all about vegans and veg’s being able to get complete nutrition from natural, unprocessed (or less processed) sources.

  21. Paige (Running Around Normal) on July 13, 2010 at 7:04 pm

I love nooch!! It scares the husband just because it has the word yeast in it though, haha.
You’ve got quite the busy day! Have a good one 🙂

  22. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on July 13, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Yeah, 100 dollars is not too bad when you’re buying organic and such. We usually spend the same amount and it is by no means us going hogwild at the store or something.

Enjoy the rest of your night!

  23. Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter on July 13, 2010 at 7:13 pm

You also use nooch in your fake cheese stuff–the one with the bell pepper and chia seeds. I love that recipe and use it fairly often. It scares my roomies though haha.

  24. Cara on July 13, 2010 at 7:41 pm

I have yet to try nutritional yeast, but am very curious about it.

$100 is not to bad if you are buying good quality things.

  25. Allison @ Food For Healing on July 13, 2010 at 7:49 pm

if i make a meal plan for the week, i usually spend about $100 to eat for that whole week for 2 people. so thats not bad!

I have not had nutritional yeast yet, the only time i’ve seen it in a store was in a pretty large container and I was not quite sure if i wanted to buy that much yet, i kind of just want to try it out in a smaller quantity just in case

  26. Rachel on July 13, 2010 at 7:55 pm

Bah! I’m Dying to get my hands on some Mung Bean pasta but can’t find it anywhere. Online or my local health food stores. Would you mind divulging the actual brand name? Maybe they’ll ship some to me. HEABs not the only one who created a monster! 🙂

    • Melissa on July 13, 2010 at 11:37 pm

The brand is “Explore Asian” and the flavor is “Mung Bean Fettuchini” (they spell ‘fettucini’ incorrectly, btw. I have seen it at some Whole Foods stores and in my local health food store. I’ve also ordered it online at Lori’s Natural. lorisnatural (dot) com. It also seems to be available at navan foods (dot) com. Explore Asian also makes a black bean spaghetti and a soybean spaghetti, neither of which I have tried yet.

      • Rachel on July 14, 2010 at 2:27 pm

Thank you so much! I’m going to go investigae Lori’s right now! 🙂

      • Rachel on July 14, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Just ordered the pasta and chia seeds from Lori’s, thank you so much!

  27. Kimberly on July 13, 2010 at 7:57 pm

I haven’t tried N Yeast yet, I’ve heard it smells like fish food. Is this true? 🙂 I have seen it at the bulk bins at Whole Foods, but I am nervous about trying it. Have you found an organic version?

My husband and I spend about $100 per week on groceries, I am working on spending less. Our food is about 90% organic and my husband is a meat and cheese eater.

I read the earlier post about Germany, my brother is with AFN Mannheim and loves it! He has a harder time finding natural and organic food and fresh produce at the commissary, but that is the only thing he doesn’t like about being there.

  28. Faith @ LovelyAsCharged on July 13, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I just bought a vegan mac n’ cheese that uses nooch for the sauce – I think I’m going to try that out tomorrow for dinner! It’ll be my first time with the stuff, though. Fingers crossed!

  29. Heather on July 13, 2010 at 9:05 pm

    Hi Gina!

I’ve been using RED STAR nutritional yeast for the past year or so. Recently, the latest batch I got caused me to break out in an awful rash. I noticed after the 3rd time the rash happened that it occurred RIGHT after I had eaten nooch.

I Googled it and found some speculation (not evidence) that RED STAR may contain MSG, which causes rashes.

What are your thoughts on this? I’m freaking out!

    Stay lovely,
    Heather

I gotta tell you, your groceries look JUST LIKE MY GROCERIES!!! Weird!

  31. Nicole on July 13, 2010 at 9:10 pm

Woah. My chia seed dessert looks a whole lot like your protein ice cream’s twin. How lovely! & I got a little pack of nutrtional yeast from Braggs website, but haven’t used it. I LOVE how you put it atop your pasta, though, that will definitely be my next plate of pasta’s friend, gracias!

  32. Lili on July 13, 2010 at 9:21 pm

Nutritional yeast is also really yummy on potatoes – baked or mashed!

  33. Shanna @ Shanna Like Banana on July 13, 2010 at 9:26 pm

Oh what a great idea for the nutritional yeast on popcorn. Sounds like a phenomenal little snack! (I’ve never tried it before!)

  34. Emily @ Emilyeatsclean on July 13, 2010 at 9:29 pm

Ohh it’s very easy to determine your hubby’s snacks. However, that cinnamon crush Cascadian Farm cereal is pretty much the bomb dot com!!

Love me some nooch! Lately I’ve been loving it in “slop bowls.” Aka veggies, tofu, marinara and lots of nooch. Absolutely delicious!!

  36. s on July 13, 2010 at 9:52 pm

hey, i added a little over 1T of coconut, a bit under 1/4c (haha my smoothie making is not an exact science) pecans, and an extra .5 T of cocoa powder to the protein ice cream recipe and it came out german chocolate like. thought you might like to know 🙂 i don’t use nooch but i have been meaning to try it on popcorn for so long!

    • s on July 13, 2010 at 11:19 pm

oops i also added 2/3 a frozen banana.

  42. Sarah on July 13, 2010 at 11:39 pm

I use nooch on popcorn and salads, primarily, but I find it to serve as an excellent tofu-coater before I saute or bake. Yum.

I love to blend nooch with nuts/seeds to make vegan parmesan. My fave recipe right now is equal parts nooch+flax+pine nuts+sesame seeds+lemon zest+salt+pepper…i swear it tastes just like parm, and as a former parm addict I should know 🙂 It’s perfect for the mung bean fettucini i FINALLY happened across at the grocery store!!

  45. Anna (munchingmamacita) on July 14, 2010 at 2:34 am

I am obsessed with nooch!!! I could put in on everything. I love to make a big bowl of beans and veggies with salsa and a ton of nooch. I also love it on pasta (like you already mentioned) and on stir-frys.

  46. A Teenage Gourmet on July 14, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I’ve used nutritional yeast in vegan cashew cheese . . . it’s really good that way!

  47. Julie on July 14, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Wow! I’m not sure what was more educational for me, your article or the many comments that followed.

  48. Brynne on July 14, 2010 at 9:37 pm

You inspired me to use nooch the only way I ever have – on popcorn! Meant to be .. must try more options ASAP!
