Color Vibe 5k

I have some souvenirs from this morning:

a cool T-shirt, awesome memories with great friends, and powdery blue magma that may be stuck in my ear from now until eternity ๐Ÿ˜‰

Colorvibe6

We met up with some friends to run the Color Vibe 5k. You may have seen it on Facebook recently, and the race itself is marketed more as an “experience” than a racing event. It’s not timed (but you will have “the time of your life” they say), and throughout the course, you go through color stations where volunteers kindly pelt you with a colored corn starch mixture.

Colorvibe8

I managed to get through the first station fairly clear, even though I went right through the middle of it:

Color vibe

(this was taken right before that)

but for the second color station, the Pilot held me in front of him and yelled, “She has hardly any!! Get her!!” and the volunteers happily obliged.

Colorvibe5

We ended up walking the course with our friends, but there were a ton of runners, many in all white or costumes.

Colorvibe7

With the exception of the color aspect, it didn’t have many bells or whistles- no music or water stations.

While I enjoyed the race with my friends, I feel like it was overpriced for a 5k, even though I think the color mixture may be expensive to make and hand out so generously. Another thing that I found to be kind of strange was that the route was around the perimeter of one of Tucson’s largest hospitals:

Colorvibe9

The worry wart in me kept thinking about people trying to get into the hospital and being blocked by the race course. I’m sure they had the logistics behind that figured out, but I couldn’t help but wonder.

The color aspect of the race was pretty amazeballs, though, and unlike anything I’d ever seen. I liked the fact that they used a mixture that was safe for your skin, easy to wash off, and edible if necessary:

Colorvibe4

You even get an extra pack in your race bag, juuuust in case you didn’t get enough color on your run/walk:

Colorvibe3

(the Pilot and Lisa are brave souls)

I joked that he looked like a Cheeto:

Colorvibe2

All in all, it was a great way to enjoy the morning with friends, get in some extra activity and a guaranteed shower ๐Ÿ™‚

Have you done a Color Vibe race? What about any of the Mudder or obstacle events? I’ll never forget the Thanksgiving 5k where we had to jump over fire and run through a lake- it was a blast.

See ya in the morning with meals and fitness for the week <3

xoxo,

Gina

I’m doing my first one on Saturday, I haven’t done this sort of race ever so I’m excited. I’m pacing a friend, so hopefully we will enjoy the whole experience!

They look so fun but I totally balked at the cost. A $45 5K when I paid that for the half I ran today? And I could do 2 regular 5Ks at that price? Yeah… not currently worth it. But one day I’m sure.

    • Fitnessista on December 1, 2012 at 10:21 pm

the cost shocked me, too. if we didn’t run it with friends, we would have skipped it

    Hey Gina,

Could you please send me the contact info for the holistic doc who helped you and Tom get Livi? I found out recently that I have celiac and it’s been difficult to get the help I need from my conventional docs. If you could send his number or email my way, I’d be eternally grateful. Sorry to post this on your main site, but I know you get a billion emails every day and figured I’d reach you faster this way.

    Thanks,
    Amanda

That looks so fun! I’d love to do a colour run. I’ve done an obstacle course run before and that was so fun- I love runs that mix it up a bit like that.

  11. Claire on December 1, 2012 at 10:48 pm

I did one over the summer and I had an amazing time! I was able to ambush my best friend at the finish line with my extra packet of color to complete the look!! Showering afterwards was interesting though…I had to go to a wedding that night so I spent a good hour in the shower trying to scrub every inch of color off my skin. Thank God it came off a bit easier than I had thought it would and I managed to get it all off! Would have been so worth it even if I hadn’t though!

I really want to do a color run someday but live in a small enough town that I would have to travel for it. I’m really intrigued by it because it reminded me of Holi (an Indian festival) and then I read that it was based on that festival! Since I don’t live in India, I’ve only experienced the actual festival a couple if times and it is super fun!!! The color run seems like an ok substitute ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Kayla on December 1, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Looks like fun! I’ve never done any kind of themed/obstacle race! You guys look cute covered in.. well, colour!

  15. Elizabeth M. on December 1, 2012 at 11:26 pm

My friend did the color run this year and afterwards I went to her house (after she showered) and I noticed she still had some purple by her hear. I told her and she says “yeah I blew my nose and it was purple. I cleaned out my ears and it was purple. The weird thing is that they didn’t throw any purple.” Made me laugh.

I’m signed up for one of those races in February.. I hope it’s fun!

  17. Sarah on December 2, 2012 at 12:45 am

I did the Color Run this past August, but didn’t get too colorful. It was my first 5K, and while fun, I probably won’t do it again. Getting a hunk of yellow powder in my face at one part of the race wasn’t really fun. It was fun to have magenta stains on my skin for a day or so though.

I do want to do a mudder next year though, and then eventually a “normal” 5K.

  18. Megan Infantino on December 2, 2012 at 7:10 am

Hahaha The pilot certainly used you as bait!! LOL My friend did one down in southern Florida. I think there is one coming to St Petersburg FL. I’ll definitely sign up! Sounds like a lot of fun.

    Race looked fun!

  22. Kali Dickson on December 2, 2012 at 10:51 am

In August, I did the Run For Your Lives 5K. Volunteers dressed up like zombies and chased you throughout the woods. You start out with three flags and have to endure 10 obstacles including possible electric shocks and lots of mud. It was overpriced IMO, but so much fun with a group of girlfriends.

  23. Madi on December 2, 2012 at 11:01 am

I did two tough mudders this summer and I am hooked! I especially love military sponsored ones. those guys know how to have a good time ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Gina, I wondering what Polar you use? I am wanting one for Christmas and thought I’d ask for your recommendation since you use one!

    Thanks!

I’m doing the Color Run in LA in February and am trying to figure out what to wear – were you able to get the color out of your white clothes?

    • Fitnessista on December 2, 2012 at 12:33 pm

      everything washed out ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Rebecca on December 2, 2012 at 12:55 pm

I’ve done Warrior Dash – and it was one heck of a workout. It is just over 5K, and halfway through I felt like I was going to pass out as it was running up and down small ski hills. I can run a 5K straight without stopping – but not Warrior dash ๐Ÿ™‚ A whole pile of us just stopped and chilled at the water station.

I’m not sure I would be willing to pay a large sum of money to run colour vibe. There was one here in Ottawa in September, but I didn’t go. However, compared to all the other ‘big races’ here, the price is comparable. The average cost of a 5K in Ottawa is about $40 a pop

  27. Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin on December 2, 2012 at 1:10 pm

I am planning on doing the Color Run (which is similar) next year in San Francisco! Looks like so much fun!!

  28. Sierra on December 2, 2012 at 2:33 pm

Looks like so much fun! I don’t mean to put you on the spot, but you look like you have lost weight; much thinner than your pre-Olivia days. I was wondering if you planning on writing a post about it. Also wondering what you attribute it too- perhaps adding running back into your schedule?

Anyhow, feel free to ignore the question if it makes you uncomfortable ๐Ÿ˜‰ Have a great day!

    • Fitnessista on December 2, 2012 at 10:14 pm

i’m not sure how much i weigh right now (i tend to just go by how my clothes fit), but when i got pregnant with liv, i was about 5-7 lbs over my “happy” weight. my doc said it would make it easier to get pregnant if i gained a few lbs, so i actively had to work to keep it on by eating more fat-dense foods and taking it really easy with workouts. now i’m at a place that’s much easier to maintain. i can do intense workouts, but don’t usually spend more than 40 minutes at the gym and still enjoy treats like wine and chocolate every day. it would take work for me to gain weight, and also to lose weight- i’m just in maintenance mode now

      • julie on December 3, 2012 at 1:24 pm

so basically, your “happy weight” is being underweight?

        • Fitnessista on December 3, 2012 at 3:29 pm

          Who said I was underweight?

          • Julie on December 3, 2012 at 7:09 pm

Your doctor told you to put on a few pounds to get pregnant, people at a healthy weight don’t need to be told that.

          • Fitnessista on December 3, 2012 at 7:25 pm

Actually I was smack in the middle of what is healthy for my height. Also, weight is a poor indication of health or body composition

        • Quinn on December 3, 2012 at 3:35 pm

Not sure if you meant to come across presumptuous and rude, but you did. I’m sure Gina is well aware of what a healthy weight for herself is. She never said anything about being underweight, nor would she ever advocate that.

Looks like fun! I’ve always wanted to do a color run, but the funds haven’t allowed me to do so just yet…someday, though! ๐Ÿ™‚

i did the Tough Mudder in Sarasota on Saturday…I never wanna do a regular race again!!!! it was amazing!

  32. Conni Jo on December 2, 2012 at 10:58 pm

Looks like you all had fun! I did a mud race in August (Rugged Maniac). It was only 5k, but I was not prepared (mentally) for the hills that we had to run up (it was on a snow ski resort). I was mentally beat and not enjoying it after the 6th hill in the first .75m. The obstacles were a piece of cake, the hills were terrible. I’m not sure that I’ll do it again and it was the first race I had ever ran in. I was disappointed in the race and myself ๐Ÿ™

  33. joelle @ on a pink typewriter on December 3, 2012 at 12:10 pm

The colors are so pretty! I was wary to do this race, though, because of fear the coloring wouldn’t wash off haha. Did you wear old running shoes or did it just wash off pretty easily?

    • Fitnessista on December 3, 2012 at 12:23 pm

i worn my old asics that i’m going to take the shoe recycling, so i wasn’t so worried about the color- my brooks are too new and shiny haha

  34. Annie on December 10, 2012 at 1:11 pm

Lol, did you curl your hair for a 5K? :p

    • Fitnessista on December 10, 2012 at 1:51 pm

Haha it was leftover from the day before- I left it down since we were walking
