The master gobbler
Hi friends! How was your weekend? Hope you’re having a great Monday so far! I’m off to teach BODYPUMP -so excited for the launch this weekend- and spending the morning with my little sidekick.
Yesterday, we went to explore a nursery that was recommended to us by a friend. I’m not sure how word gets around that we’re obsessed with goats, but he was like, “They have plants and goats there. You need to check it out!” and we nodded enthusiastically, knowing we’d make a trip as soon as possible.
It’s called City Farmers Nursery, and it’s nestled just outside of City Heights. Once you walk in, you would have no idea that you’re in San Diego. We felt like we were back Georgia or Alabama, surrounded by farm animals and gorgeous plants for days. They had virtually any type of organic produce you could wish for: bananas, apricots, blueberries, apples, peaches, herbs, veggies… There were also succulents,
a play area for the kids,
and so many animals: turtles, chickens, roosters, goats and cows, all in spacious outdoor areas with room for grazing and exploring. As much as we loved the chickens and the goats (of course, the goats),
the turkey took my breath away. He was in his own yard area, standing pretty far away, and I was awestruck by his gorgeous feathers and features. I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen a turkey before. I wanted him to come closer so I could snap a pic, so I did what anyone would do: I gobbled at him, and he walked right over, clearly thinking I was another turkey trying to communicate with him.
A gobbling tutorial will be on the blog later this week haha.
They also have an organic cafe with local beer, home-brewed kombucha (ahhhhhhh), and a full menu.
They were still serving brunch, so I rolled with the egg and veggie tacos.
They were scrambled with veggies and herbs, served with avocado and salsa verde. So, so good. I had a tough time deciding between that and the tempeh Rueben, so I think we’ll have to go back. 😉
The Pilot ordered the pulled pork sandwich,
and Liv got the kids’ PB&J, which she crushed.
(She really wants a cat, but unfortunately the Pilot and I are allergic.)
Our plants here at home have all started to grow and sprout, minus the mint. So, we picked up a candy mint plant from the nursery and may be making a trip back for supplies for a small veggie garden.
I’d love to build a small flatbed garden, but we have to be strategic about how we do it since we’re renting and it would need to be something temporary that won’t affect the yard. Please let me know if you have any tips or if you’ve done something similar!
Hope you have a great morning <3
xoxo
Gina
Check in with today’s workout here!
New Family post coming atcha this afternoon, and I’ll also pick a winner for this giveaway. <3
Look at that sweet kitty! I’m allergic to cats too but am not allergic to my Maine Coon cat! It’s awesome!
It looks like you had an awesome weekend. Those tacos look delicious!
is that a hypoallergenic breed?
The only really hypoallergenic breed is the (imo scary) hairless cats. But Maine Coons (and Norwegian Forest Cats) don’t produce the same dander that a lot of other cats do that give most people allergic reactions. My throat closes up around cats but it doesn’t around mine. And three of my friends that are allergic to cats tell me they don’t get any allergy symptoms when they’re around my cat. It’s crazy.
wow, that is really interesting! now i just need to find someone who has one and ask if i can visit their cat to test it out haha
Over here in PA, we have random turkeys all over the place! That’s funny that you’ve never seen one.
OMG to all those succulents. I’m desperately trying to get some greenery in our house that I don’t kill. My mother-in-law just gave me a plant she’s had since my husband was born and I am SO scared it’s going to die a long slow death. #blackthumb
haha that’s a lot of pressure to keep it alive!
That looks like a fun weekend! I loveeee egg tacos/burritos (with ALL the hot sauce)! 😀
When we first moved into our rental, I just grew everything in containers. You can grow almost anything in a container, so we have a pretty good variety.
What a fun scene to explore right in your own backyard! Happy Monday, Gina!
Hey Gina, I don’t know if youve answere this before, but do you see yourself running a marathon or entering a bikini competition sometime in the future, maybe two or three ywars after baby?
i’m not going to say “never” but it’s not on my plan right now. running a half marathon is painful enough, and i think i like food too much to do a bikini comp. the fitness portion would be NBD, but as of right now, eating egg whites and chicken with broccoli all day sounds terrible
Looks like an awesome time! Our farmer’s market opens here on 5/2 and I can’t wait. I’m pretty over dreary Chicago winter and am wanting the sun to come out!
this has nothing to do with this haha but did you know you’re getting a soul cycle?!
I did! I’m actually signed up for tomorrow morning their first class haha
I’d love to hear your opinion on drinking kombucha when pregnant…some health professionals say it’s perfectly fine, others say it’s not worth any risk, and I’ve been undecided ever since I found out I was pregnant so I just have little bits at a time, if any.
i’ve been skipping it, just because of the trace amounts of alcohol. it sounds SO GOOD though; so bubbly and fretting during hot weather
Right, it’s probably not worth it. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds like a fun weekend 🙂 I could live off egg tacos/burritos!
same. my favorite food! 🙂
Ahhh I love goats too! I cracked up at your gobbling comment haha I would have done the same thing.
I AM OBSESSED WITH GOATS. They are my favorite animal and I hope you know that you MADE my day. I live in San Diego and I am high tailing it over to this nursery ASAP.
haha they are my favorite, too!! you will LOVE it there
Those tacos look DANK. OMFG I need!
they were insane
I just read that as you wanted to build a small FLAT BREAD garden and I got really excited imaging flat breads blossoming. I think it’s time to eat lunch 😉
girl, i would love to have some flatbread growing in the garden haha
Looks like a great weekend!
A few years back, we just nailed a bunch of 2x4s together to make a raised flowerbed to sit on our back patio. We don’t have a ton of real estate and I didn’t want to kill any of the grass we do have by setting it on there. We left the bottom open, placed a few cinderblocks to raise it up and fill some space, lined it with a weed liner, and filled it with some good quality soil. I’ve planted all kinds of stuff in there. Right now I have some strawberry plants, a hosta, and a couple of pretty flowers. And I used the leftover cinderblocks as planters, too — peppers grow really well in there (since they get so hot in the summertime here in Georgia). But, right now I’ve got cilantro and chocolate mint. The mint is left over from last year — it grew really well in the cinderblock (just keep it trimmed back — mint will take over everything!) — and the cilantro is a new addition this year. So far, so good. Happy planting!
that is awesome. thank you!! i’m so excited to have these options to check out. really appreciate your help 🙂
I’ve had great success with growing peppers and Cherry tomatoes in these grow bags: http://www.gardeners.com/buy/vegetable-gardening/vegetable-grow-bags/
They are pretty cheap and easily removable.
oh, i love those! thank you!!
i’m wondering if i could get the big one for veggies, like kale, zucchini, chard and carrots?
This looks like such a nice place to spend an afternoon!
I’d love to know what you figure out about renting and planting a garden. Having a small area to grow veggies or herbs would be a DREAM. 🙂
Always, Anita
i will definitely do a little post on it when i figure out our set-up!
Have you thought of using native plants? They’re easier to care for (for example, they don’t need as much water). I bet there’s all kinds of beautiful cacti and succulents that are native to your area.
yes, i have a succulent garden that i love! (and they were my first starter plants that i could keep alive haha)
PLEASE post what you learn about renters / mini veggie gardens! Pretty please!! Thanks! 🙂
i definitely will! xo
This place looks like my version of heaven right now! I’m on the hunt for an organic nursery/farm in Wisconsin that sells plants that I can take home and garden. I think it’s too late in the season to start everything right from seed. We have three large garden plots in back and sometimes I feel like that’s never enough. Maybe try doing some things in pots, like tomatoes, peas, or strawberries. That way you can move them around your yard wherever you get the best sunlight and there’s no digging involved in the yard.
yes, it was such an amazing place!!
i already have a succulent garden, strawberries, heirloom tomatoes, basil and flowers (plus the oranges, lemons and fig trees that are in the yard! wahoo!) but would love to plant some kale, chard, zucchini and carrots
Oddly enough we have a lot of wild turkeys here in NJ. I guess Jersey really does have a little bit of everything : )
Also, about the garden — have you thought about the standing garden? Those are portable, and much easier to maintain even if you didn’t have to worry about the rental situation. I saw one the other day at Crate and Barrel, but I’ve also seen them at Lowe’s and Home Depot. I kind of like the idea that it’s a little controlled environment for you to plant and grow. I don’t exactly have green thumbs! : )
i love this idea so much- thank you!! so excited to explore more of these
Hopefully this isn’t a repeat suggestion, but this is what you need! We moved it when we moved out of our rental. The actual company’s website ( http://www.gronomics.com/ ) has different styles and shapes.
This is the one I used last summer and it did great…

this is exactly what i was looking for! thank you!
Eggs in taco or burrito form = best breakfast ever.
P.s. I made the egg bake over the weekend and my husband and I loved it.
amen to that.
yay, so happy you liked it!!!
My Mom bought me an herb cart from Sur La Table for Christmas. It’s a flathead but totally mobile as it has wheels. I love mine!
ahhh that is perfect!
Turkeys are terrifying creatures.
haha i think they’re so pretty!
This looks so fun! I loved petting goats at the petting zoo when I was a little girl. They are super friendly, almost like dogs! I also adore scrambled eggs in tortilla – thanks for reminding me about this one!

they are super friendly! i still want one…
We used this, which worked well:

Just make sure to cover it when not in use – neighbors’ cats thought ours was a litter box. :I
Looking forward to hearing how you modify Bodypump for pregnancy. I did it until my third trimester when I decided that I only wanted to do barre. I found some useful information about modifications from Les Mills and found I was able to do most of the class with just dropping the weights. Would be great to hear your perspective!
i can definitely do a post on it later! for now, everything has been the same. i’ve had to decrease my squat weight, but that’s pretty much it
If you guys really want a cat and are allergic, there are ways around that now. My mom is very allergic and they have two cats and a dog. Every other week, my dad gives here this small, painless shot in her arm. It takes seconds and is inexpensive.
liv is the only one who’s really pushing for a cat right now haha. i love cats, but i’m happy petting the feral ones outside and then have a sneezing fit for the rest of the day 😉
