Lavender and honey salmon

I never, ever would have thought to do this.

Salmon 5

Looks like regular salmon, right?

Nope, it’s coated in a mix of dried lavender and honey. Best surprising combo I’ve had in a looooooong time.

Salmon 2

Since my uncle the cheffer has been staying with us, we talk food pretty often. He’s given me some great tips (like the bolognese spoon!) and will throw out recipes like it ain’t no thang. I want to carry my notebook around for the next time he starts listing off ingredients.. I’ll be prepared 😉

The other night, we were talking about our love of salmon (and the fact that we never know where Tucson salmon really comes from. It’s never “fresh”- it’s fresh-frozen) and he mentioned a lavender-honey salmon he made a guest at his restaurant.

“You just cook it the same way I taught you: salt, pepper and pan sear

drizzle with a mix of honey and dried lavender – easy on the lavender, though, that stuff is TNT

Lavendar of honey

and bake it off, drizzle with more honey and lemon when it’s finished”

Salmon 4

SUPER easy and soooooo delicious. The honey created a sweet crust on the salmon and the lavender gave it a warm, earthy flavor. I always use lavender in sweet dishes (like blueberry-lavender ice cream) and will definitely start experimenting with it for more savory dishes.

Salmon and veg

Kyle and Meg came over to join us, and Kyle showed up with my favorite gluten-free chocolate chips cookies. He’s such a good brother 😉

Cookies

This morning, we’re off on an adventure with the little cousins. Yesterday, we met up with my friend Michele for open play at the kid’s gym and it was intense. Like an indoor playground free-for-all but with lots of screaming, running children. The kids all had a blast, but it scared me a little, haha. That’s coming from someone who loves kids, too! But wow. Wow.

I’m gonna go ahead and have another cookie 😉

Hope you have a great day and I’ll see ya later with an interview with a celebrity trainer.

xoxo

Gina

Something to do:

Don’t forget to check out the Fashion page for Meg’s new post! I love all of her posts, but have to say this one’s my fave

New workout move! I’m a huge fan of combo movements that work multiple muscle groups and get your heart rate up. Check out this one:

Step forward into a lunge on an elevated surface (like a BOSU or step)

Lunge

Using the forward foot to step back, come into a plank and then (optional) push-up

Plank 2

Keep your feet right where they are, and walk your hands back to your feet, keeping your abs engaged and eventually back up to standing. Repeat to lunge on the opposite side.

Lavender is so good in such random ways.

Best surprising combo ever: Lavender lemonade. I got my hands on a lot of fresh lavender the other day and used some to make lavender simple syrup. I then added about a tablespoon and a half of it to some odwalla fresh squeezed lemonade. Holy delicious. Try it try it try it.

Love the combo move. I teach a group fitness class. It’s a fast paced combo class where we do step, kickboxing, HIIT, strength training and stretching in one hour. So combo moves during the strength segment are essential to make the most of our time. I’ve been using about 5 minutes for the strength segment and I’m always looking for other ideas. I’d love to see other combo moves that you’ve put together. Right now I’m doing a borrowed move from P90X. Using the length of our group fitness room and a pair of dumbbells, I have participants lunge, do a tricep extension, bicep curl, shoulder press, reverse curl and then repeat on the other side. Love your site 🙂

Until you made the macaroons with lavender I didn’t even know people cooked with it. Yes I know I’m living under a rock. I thought it was just for smelling, lol. Now you’ve really thrown me for a loop with this lavender on salmon business. I’m going to have to search me out some lavender!

honey and lavender, oh, how awesome must that be! great combo!

  22. Andrea on July 24, 2012 at 1:35 pm

DUDE. Lavender salmon sounds like it was created for me. We eat salmon often since it is everywhere here in the PNW, but sometimes plain ol’ S & P can get a little boring! And I am a lavender freak, we have a local town a couple of hours away that is known for their lavender fields. There isn’t a lavender thing I have tried there and not liked. Lavender mocha anyone?!

  23. SweatyGirl on July 24, 2012 at 1:41 pm

I once took a Cooking With Lavender class, and we made lavender salmon and it blew my mind, too!
    SO GOOD!

  24. Erin @ The Grass Skirt on July 24, 2012 at 1:54 pm

Salmon is my very favorite food, but I’ve never tried it with lavendar. I’m definitely going to soon though!

  25. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on July 24, 2012 at 1:55 pm

I still have yet to jump on the lavender bandwagon, but now that you tell me it can be paired with one of my fave foods of all time (salmon!!!) I’m so all over it. Going to search for some this weekend!

  26. Kat on July 24, 2012 at 2:11 pm

That exercise looks great, I’m going to try it out!

Also, I LOVE your tank top…where’s it from?

  29. Talia @ Bite Size Wellness on July 24, 2012 at 3:09 pm

Yum! Do you think the flavors would go well on a white, mild fish like tilapia? Or will it overwhelm? I am a picky fish eater but want to give this a try!

    • Fitnessista on July 25, 2012 at 12:23 pm

ehhh i don’t know how good that would taste

So- not to sound like a creepster here- but I am SO envious of your booty! It’s one of my most challenging target areas, sigh. Have you done specific things for glutes or is that genetic from the madre?? 🙂

      aww thanks girl!!
my booty tells me when i haven’t been eating well, and it also responds pretty well with heavy lifting (lots of squats and lunges)

That salmon looks great. Plus I love that dish that the salmon is in. Were did you get it? Did you bake it in it?

  37. Jackie on July 24, 2012 at 6:54 pm

    a) I. Must. Try. Honey. Lavender. Salmon.

    b) I adore the quote. I saw it recently on Pinterest and it struck a chord with me because of the stuff I have been going through lately.

  38. Sarah Anne on July 24, 2012 at 7:52 pm

I’m going to be a nerd here, and say the salmon looks like either Atlantic or Spring salmon – they are often ‘paler’ in colour, than say Sockeye or Coho. (Can you tell, I live in British Columbia – Land of Salmon) I have really grown to love Sockeye, but it’s more expensive. We roll with Arctic Char sometimes too! That recipe looks DELICIOUS and I cannot wait to try it! I’m on a roll with your recipes this week! (Butterfinger smoothie is coming up tonight and we had your quiche last night!)

I love the quote too. Perfect timing. Thank you!

  39. Sonia the Mexigarian on July 25, 2012 at 2:02 pm

So it’s straight up dried lavender? Like from the plant? Lol. Sorry, taking its time to wrap my head around. Innnnnteresting. I got plenty of lavender here in the garden. Perhaps it’s time to dry some 😉

  40. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on July 25, 2012 at 5:26 pm

I want to try this lunge for sure! Looks good for overall body targeting.
