The leaf + Schweaty August Workout

After breakfast, I love to read to Liv in the morning. It had been a while since I’d read the hungry caterpillar and I thought it was pretty funny that after gorging himself with treats,

all he wanted was a nice big leaf- that made him feel much better. It’s funny that they teach detox at such a young age.

In all seriousness, it’s interesting that the body starts to crave veggies after a weekend of indulgences. It’s how I feel right now: ready for a leaf (or salad beast). We joked last night that we were all going to eat kale today 😉

Whenever we’re on vacation or out on a special occasion, I tend to mostly stick to my normal eats but if there’s something new or different I want to try, I go for it. Well in Vegas, pretty much everything is new and I want to try it. I’ve especially had a lot a sweets and dessert- it feels like Christmas in July. We have one more day left, so I’ll keep living it up, but will probably get a salad in somewhere in there.

Yogurt and berries this morning, with half a Macro bar crumbled in:

We’re off on some morning adventures! Not idea what we’re doing yet…

See ya later on the Family page <3

Something to do: How about a Schweaty August Workout? Feel free to incorporate this into your usual strength training routine, and since it includes some speed intervals, plyo and hill drills, I wouldn’t recommend doing it on consecutive days. As always, check with a doc before making any fitness changes, honor your body and your injuries. For ideas on how to incorporate this into your current routine, check out the August workout calendar.

If you give it a try, please tweet me (@fitnessista) or leave a comment to let me know how it goes! I love sweaty workout pics, too….

One of the most adorable books ever!

Sometimes your worksouts scare me… in a good way 😛 After loving your Tabata videos, I am trying to branch out more and try new workouts that I don’t think I’d be able to do, this is on the list!!

I am the same way about splurging and eating healthy, but I never felt that way until I really committed to a new lifestyle. before that I just felt icky all the time and didn’t realize there was a difference!

I love that book! You are so right too! I just crave fruits and veggies after a while of not so great eating!

Hey, Gina! I know you’ve blogged about this before, but I can’t find the post. Are larabars and macrobars your “go-to” bars all the time, or are there others you like? And what’s your fave flavor of macrobar? I’m obsessed with the peanut butter cookie larabars, but I think it’s time to switch it up, and I’m looking for other healthy options. Thanks!

i like all of the macro bars! larabars and macro bars are my go-tos, unless i can find a survival bar, which i also really love. the pure bars are ok, so i’ll eat them sometimes to switch it up

Have you guys gone to Wicked Spoon in Cosmo yet? You must go there! It’s a buffet, but it’s amazing! I go there every time I’m in Vegas now and I just cannot get enough.

Also, just from your pics from yesterday, are you guys staying near Red Rock? There’s a really delicious Italian restaurant in there–Terra somethingorother. I definitely recommend it, even if I cannot remember the naaaaame.

I find it funny that a lot of kids books have real life adult messages and you don’t even realize until years later haha. Hope you’re having a blast <3

Ha, I love that book! One of my favourite when I was a kid.
It’s very true though, after a period of time where I’ve eaten too much crap, a salad or lots of veggies in general makes me a lot better.

For the bosu squat jumps, am I jumping from the right and left of the bosu onto it? Like a side jump?

I love that book and you are so right about our body craving veggies after eating lots of sweets. This weekend I celebrated my b-day with pb chip cake….yummmmm. Today, I’m definitely craving the veggies!

In college, I may or may not have written a dirty, parody version of the hungry hungry caterpillar.

Great tips as always!! I’m going to try your workout today and super excited. I love reading your posts right before working out because they get me pumped!

I love the hungry caterpillar! It’s so endearing, and it does teach a good lesson about healthy eating! 😀 Also, I love that it teaches about transformation in our lives (specifically our hearts). I too crave veggies even more than usual if I eat too much heavy food.

Hi Gina! I wanted to email you about this but I don’t know where the button is. I must be blind! 0_0 haha. But if you don’t mind my asking for some advice regarding group class instructing, here is my Q:

I know you mentioned that you got certified by AFAA, so does that mean you worked for 24hourfitness? Or are people who are AFAA certified able to work in other gyms? I am aware that 24hour provides several types of trainings for different classes, like Lesmills, zumba, strength training, will&power, etc. And since AFAA seems to be more broad instead of focused on one practice, (I think?) and if you get certified through them, are you allowed to choose whichever class you wanna teach? I’m a bit confused regarding this since I know you’ve been teaching zumba too, so I thought you’d be the perfect person to ask! Thank you in advance and have a beautiful day Gina~! 🙂 I hope this makes sense.

When I’m on vaca, I always start to crave healthy eats. It’s fun to go wild, but my body knows to tell me I should cool it, haha. My friend had a Hungry Caterpillar themed first birthday party for her daughter. It was absolutely precious!

I have the same approach to vacation eating. I don’t go crazy with indulging, but I don’t hold myself back from eating what I want either! I would feel like I’m wasting the eating experience if I don’t let myself order what I really want!

  27. Melodie on August 6, 2012 at 9:21 pm

Ok, I hardly ever comment, but I have quite a passion for children’s books and wanted to share some of my favorites that I read to my boys!

We loved all of the Froggy books, The Kissing Hand, The Pigeon Books (he is hilarious!), Where’s My Hug?, Bernard’s Nap, and Chrysanthemum. All great books!

  28. Natalie @ FreshLifeFindings on August 6, 2012 at 10:30 pm

That was one of my favorite books to read my students in student teaching 🙂 Thanks for the workout! That bosu always makes any workout killer!

  29. Lisa B. on August 6, 2012 at 11:57 pm

Your blog always seems to bring a smile to my face, or gives me encouragement just when I need it most…and today was no exception. I love, love, love that book! Even though I am much older than you are, it’s amazing to me how on many days when I read your blog, you address a similar workout routine, piece of equipment, or food choice or recipe I have recently wondered about. We even had the exact same thing for breakfast this morning (only mine was half a Lara Bar)!
Don’t worry about your little indulgence’s while you are on your trip…That’s what vacations are for!
So, have a great time and remember, “What Happens In Vegas…Stays in Vegas”!! 🙂

  30. Sophie on August 7, 2012 at 3:26 am

That workout has just been added to my schedule immediately. Looks like a real bad a** sweat maker! Where do you buy those Macro bars? I haven’t heard of that brand before… Thanks in advance!

  31. Caitlin on August 7, 2012 at 10:55 am

I just did the workout…omg…I initally thought I might do it twice, but quickly changed my mind as soon as I started…I was definitely a sweaty, out of breath mess! Awesome 🙂

  32. Catalina @ Cake with Love on August 7, 2012 at 11:38 am

I have tried the workout this morning, and its a killer, loved it!

  33. Bek @ Crave on August 8, 2012 at 7:31 am

I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself. I tend to stick to the same eating habits but definitely incorporate more treats on holiday. I also like trying new things!
