Asana Kicking

Hey guys ๐Ÿ™‚ How are you? Thank you so much for your amazing comments about the new inspiration board– Iโ€™m really excited to see what this year will bring <3

board

I just got back from an asana-kicking Bikram class. I ended up skipping spin this morning and figured Iโ€™d take yoga since I havenโ€™t practiced Bikram in about a month. Man, oh man, did I feel it. The instructor wasnโ€™t very friendly and I can definitely see why itโ€™s easy to be intimidated by Bikram. Word to the wise: try different instructorsโ€”some of them are actually very nice. (Like Rob in Jacksonville, FL)

Some recent eats:

snack

Goatโ€™s milk yogurt with Sun Warrior mixed in, organic bluerries, a blob of almond butter, cinnamon and a crumbled brown rice cake

Take-out from Eclectic Cafe– tostadas with veg refried beans, avocado, salsa, and goodies (I asked for no cheese but got a little sprinkle anyway)

take out

Blackberries galore:

berries

An entire thing from Trader Joes. If my skin turns purple, yaโ€™ll know what happened ๐Ÿ˜‰

This afternoon, I was inspired by my new Canyon Ranch cookbook to make some flatbread dough.

dough

I figured Iโ€™d make it, split it into portion sizes, and freeze in case the roomies or I wanted a flatbread.

dough (2)

The recipe kinda got eye-balled, and I used brown rice flour and gluten-free oat flour (ground up in the Vita-mix). Despite my lack of measuring, the dough turned out lovely.

dough (3)

Weโ€™ll see if itโ€™s still lovely when I try to bake some right now ๐Ÿ˜‰

Iโ€™m off to make some dinner, but Iโ€™ll see ya in the morning!

Have a great night,

Gina

Something to talk about: What are your thoughts on TVs in the bedroom? The Pilot and I have always banned TVs from our room (the guest room, living room and office each have one), because the bedroom is for sleeping, relaxation and.. other stuff ๐Ÿ˜‰ For the first time in 4 years, since Iโ€™m living with roomies, I have a TV in my room! Itโ€™s been nice to fall asleep to Chelsea Handlerโ€™s voice ๐Ÿ˜€ So what do you think? TVs ok in the bedroom, or banned?

I don’t have a TV in my room! When I want to watch TV and nap, I throw off the pillows from the couch and put my bedding on there for a makeshift bed.

    Hi Gina,
I don’t have a tv in the bedroom—I have in the past (usually a bf’s preference). I think if I lived alone, I’d probably want the tv to go to bed to (and be comfy with for relaxing). But the way things are now, I have no desire whatsoever to have the tv in the bedroom—-some of our best talking time is when we’re in bed! If the tv was on, we would most likely chat less.
I’m glad my guy likes it that way too—I have horrible memories of my ex-bf laughing and watching Family Guy so loudly while I was trying to sleep…

So, I guess I’d ban the tv under certain circumstances and say Go For It under others!

I just realized your inspiration board is on glitter posterboard! LOVE it! I wish I could glitter everything! I’ve had a tv in my room since high school, and now I have a hard time falling asleep without one. I like falling asleep to E News or whatever happens to be on Bravo. It’s might white noise. I suppose I could buy a noise machine, but the tv is easier.

TV in the bedroom………for other stuff! ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Sarah @ Eat Live Austin on January 3, 2011 at 9:31 pm

Hey Gina, I’ve linked you in my newest blog post so I thought I’d share
    http://eatliveaustin.wordpress.com/2011/01/03/resolution-1-go-local/

I’ve never had a TV in my bedroom, although I am kind of envious of others who do. I think when I move into a more settled place I’ll try it out.

  6. Carrie on January 3, 2011 at 9:31 pm

My husband are a nothing-but-calm in the bedroom. No TVs, desks, or anything work related. Just books, artwork, clothes and candles. ๐Ÿ™‚

Besides, all the studies say TVs can cause a lesser quality snooze. Why risk it?

  7. Meah on January 3, 2011 at 9:31 pm

No tv in the bedrooms I say. Although it is nice and I live with roommates too so I use my computer as my tv. I find myself staying up later than I normally would if I didn’t have a “tv” in my room. I prefer my bedroom without it.

  8. Whitney on January 3, 2011 at 9:32 pm

We have a tv in the bedroom, but it very rarely gets turned on. I have a hard time tuning it out and falling asleep. I have wanted to try Bikram for awhile now, but have been way too nervous to give it a try!

  9. ashley nicole on January 3, 2011 at 9:34 pm

i just heard today on GMA that a TV in the bedroom decreases the “other stuff” by 50%…that’s up to y’all! hehe

  10. shelly on January 3, 2011 at 9:35 pm

I’m kind of crazy strict about my sleep hygiene. The only thing that goes on in my bed is sleeping and…bed stuff. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I also never drink caffeine after noon, and don’t have a TV or a computer in my bedroom. The payoff is that I sleep like a BABY. I’m out the second my head hits the pillow- which wasn’t the case when I was younger and had more distractions in my bedroom. I’m also anti-TV in the bedroom because I think it impedes romance.

  11. Amber L on January 3, 2011 at 9:35 pm

We have a TV in our bedroom, but I can’t sleep right if it is on at sleep time. Kyle (my husband) is the opposite! He loves to fall asleep to the TV. It was challenging when we first got married, but we made it work. Now, if he is in bed first he can watch it, but as soon as I come in it goes off. If I’m in bed first he knows not to turn it on. If we go to sleep at the same time then of course no TV. I wouldn’t mind not having a TV in the room at all, but Kyle likes it, so I compromise. ๐Ÿ™‚

BTW, I love all the inspiration boards!

  12. Kayla on January 3, 2011 at 9:35 pm

We do have a tv in our room but it isn’t actually hooked up. We only have one in there because we each brought one when we moved in together and when we bought a bigger, nicer one for our living room the other one got moved into the bedroom.

  13. Bee on January 3, 2011 at 9:35 pm

Well, in my younger days I used to fall asleep to the TV (gotta’ love that sleep button!), but these days, we have no TV service at all — love it!!!

    • Fitnessista on January 3, 2011 at 9:38 pm

      that sounds wonderful ๐Ÿ™‚

  14. Ellen @ Cinnamonalicious on January 3, 2011 at 9:35 pm

I think it’s ok to have a tv in your room! Sometimes it’s nice to just chill in front of the tv to unwind before bedtime, nothing wrong with that! ๐Ÿ™‚ Just as long as it doesn’t get in the way of anything else ๐Ÿ˜›
I’m currently in the process of making my inspiration board – loving scanning through magazines to find the perfect quotes and pictures!
I’m sure that bread will be yumlicious too, can’t wait to see the final result ๐Ÿ˜€

  15. Ilana on January 3, 2011 at 9:37 pm

I don’t even have a TV! I think, though, when I get married, no TV in the bedroom before children. After babies, though, I think future hubs and I might want that extra bit of alone timee – let the kiddos watch Barney and Sesame St while I watch my Sex and the City DVDs in the privacy of my room. That might change.

  16. Nicole @ Making Good Choices on January 3, 2011 at 9:40 pm

We have a tv in our bedroom but we don’t ever ever watch it. The only time I’ll watch it is on snow days when I’m home alone and want to have coffee in bed! I think living without the pilot you should have one, since you don’t have any “other stuff” to do! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on January 3, 2011 at 9:47 pm

      hahah exactly!

  17. Allison @ PickyEatingRD on January 3, 2011 at 9:41 pm

I have a tv in my bedroom but we don’t have cable upstairs. Its only hooked up downstairs so the one upstairs is pretty worthless.

  18. Lindsey @ SoundEats on January 3, 2011 at 9:43 pm

We go back on forth on the TV in the bedroom all the time. A girl at work and I were actually just talking about it the other day!

Speaking of work – Rob!!!!!!!!!!! He’s one of our ambassadors! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Fitnessista on January 3, 2011 at 9:46 pm

so awesome! he’s my favorite bikram teacher ever- have you taken class from him??

  19. Emily on January 3, 2011 at 9:45 pm

I got in the habit of falling asleep to the tv a handful of years ago when I was going through a ton…My mind was always so busy at night that the tv tuned it out and I could fall asleep. I still do, unfortunately. I’ll kick it eventually ๐Ÿ™‚

  20. Ashley on January 3, 2011 at 9:47 pm

I think if you’re single or alone then tvs are fine in the bedroom, but if you’re living with a significant other then the ban is totally needed.

  21. Stephanie on January 3, 2011 at 9:53 pm

We have a tv in our bedroom because I’m a night person and the husband is not…but we like getting in bed at the same time so I watch tv after he goes to sleep…he used to wear ear plugs but is used to it now ๐Ÿ˜‰

  22. andrea on January 3, 2011 at 10:03 pm

I say get one why not..if your feeling amorous you’re gonna get amorous with or without the tube.

  23. Ashley on January 3, 2011 at 10:03 pm

I do have a TV in my bedroom, but when you have male roommates (or just roommates in general), it kinda helps when they are playing video games all day and night!

  24. Chelsea Anthony on January 3, 2011 at 10:08 pm

I vote “no” on Tv’s in the bedroom. CJ and I go back and forth about it sometimes. I have thought at times it would be nice to just curl up in bed and watch a movie together. However, I also think once you have it in there, eventually it will always be on and someone will watch it and “other things” will be set aside, haha. I like decorating our bedroom with a little romantic touch, and I think a TV takes that away completely.

  25. Maryann on January 3, 2011 at 10:11 pm

I have a TV in my room and always turn on E News while getting ready in the mornings. What can I say, I love keeping up on the celeb gossip. Haha ๐Ÿ™‚

  26. Jordana on January 3, 2011 at 10:14 pm

We have one but we don’t turn it on at night, LOL! My hubby is deployed too, and it does fill in the scary silence at night though when I’m alone ๐Ÿ™

  27. Jenn on January 3, 2011 at 10:14 pm

We have a tv in ours but sometimes it is used to aid in the “other stuff” if you know what I mean ๐Ÿ˜‰

  28. Carolyn on January 3, 2011 at 10:29 pm

The TV is a definite no in the bedroom for me. I am of the opinion the bedroom is one of limited use.

  29. Jen on January 3, 2011 at 10:34 pm

I had a TV in my room for my whole life up until about a year ago. I do much better without it! I would end up staying up later than I really wanted to. Now I read before sleep instead and I fall asleep much faster and sleep better! However… I do still enjoy laying down in the guest bedroom sometimes to watch the TV in there if I plan to take a nap during the day. ๐Ÿ™‚

  30. KimLivesHealthy on January 3, 2011 at 10:38 pm

No TV in our bedroom, it’s just for sleep and nookie ๐Ÿ™‚ But we do love when we stay in hotels, it feels like an indulgence to leave the TV on all night as we fall asleep. We actually got two TVs for Christmas this year from parents who didn’t know about the no-TV-in-the-bedroom rule… that was awkward :-/

    • Fitnessista on January 3, 2011 at 10:45 pm

haha! what did you do with them?

  31. Tenecia on January 3, 2011 at 10:43 pm

Have you tried bikram at Yoga Vida on Speedway? They have really great instructors there! I went to another studio in town for my first class and the experience almost made me want to never try another class ๐Ÿ™

We have a tv in our bedroom…it’s nice to put a movie on and cuddle in our comfy bed together ๐Ÿ™‚

I always had a tv in my bedroom until this year. Since being married we rarely watched it but now that I dont have one in the room I find myself wishing for one! (although might be that the husband has been working crazy hours so I’m home alone a lot). With roomies I’d definitely want one, Id just try to not get in the habit of falling asleep with it on if you and the pilot dont both like that ๐Ÿ™‚

love the board btw!! Its totally inspired me to do one!

  33. BIOCHEMISTA on January 3, 2011 at 10:54 pm

We have one in our room for Saturday morning news/cartoons but other than that we don’t really ever turn it on. So for us, it works but I could imagine it would be distracting if it was on all the time. The same rule applies to laptops in bed, I suppose..

  34. Laura Bogrees on January 3, 2011 at 10:55 pm

When I lived with my ex-boyfriend for a short time, we banned TV’s in the bedroom. We didn’t feel that it was very healthy since there’s always the temptation to just channel surf endlessly without talking to each other. Now that I live alone, I really love it because it sort of gives me something to look forward to as a “nightcap.” I curl up and watch mindless TV for about 15-20 minutes to just veg out and forget about the day. Everyone enjoys a little mindless television! I can have a stimulating conversation about Food Inc or Sicko and watch the Bachelor or Real Housewives of some random county at the same time. It’s all about balance!

  35. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) on January 3, 2011 at 10:56 pm

I love my tv in my bedroom. It’s actually the only tv we have in our house. We donated our 60 inch flat screen to the movers and the moving company when we left phoenix back for san diego. We didnt watch it the entire 9 mos we lived in phx, never turned it on…so we donated it. And it felt great! But I do love my little tiny 10 year old 19 in tv in my bedroom b/c that’s where i DVR the housewives, kendra, kardashians, bravo, and e! stuff. Gotta have that ๐Ÿ™‚

Good advice on yoga…keep trying different teachers and dont let one so-so experience turn you off yoga…great advice, Gina!

  36. Chandrika on January 3, 2011 at 10:59 pm

OH MY GOD Gina! You and I both have the ‘Be fearless’ clip from Self magazine on our vision boards. I absolutely loved the inspiration! I haven’t been reading your blog regularly for the past little while, but now I’m back! So happy that you’re still blogging.

  37. Emily on January 3, 2011 at 11:14 pm

We don’t have a TV in our bedroom either. I don’t think I rest as well and it takes the concept of relaxation and sleep away from the bedroom.

  38. Katie on January 3, 2011 at 11:16 pm

My boyfriend and I banned the TV from our bedroom… personally I cannot fall asleep with a TV on (and of course, the other stuff in the bedroom is very important without a TV ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). For me, TV’s in bedrooms don’t work, but I know my mom can’t fall asleep WITHOUT it on.

There are a few Bikram instructors at my studio that I’m not a big fan of. If I end up getting one of their classes, I usually tell myself that if I can get through their class in one piece (or by not leaving the room) then I can deal with people like them in the real world. ๐Ÿ™‚ It usually always works!

  39. Shanna on January 3, 2011 at 11:30 pm

I think a tv is fine. It is the blackberry / iphone / ipad that is really dangerous!

  40. Cara Craves... on January 3, 2011 at 11:47 pm

I think it’s different if you are by yourself.

  41. Allison @ Food For Healing on January 3, 2011 at 11:55 pm

i think if you live with roommates and your own private space if you bedroom, then i think tv is ok, but i think if you live in an apartment or house it isn’t necessary if you have a living room that and is private, ya know? I like the bedroom for sleeping and “other stuff” not for watching tv

  42. Sana on January 4, 2011 at 12:02 am

I have never had a TV in my room, but I guess I would want one if I lived alone. It keeps you company!

  43. Elise on January 4, 2011 at 12:03 am

For most of my adult life I’ve had a TV in the bedroom. Now I’m staying at my brother’s and the only one is in the den. I’ve become so accustomed to it that I end up sleeping in the den 95% of the time! I will definitely bet getting the TV back in the bedroom as soon as I can ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I’m single so there’s nothing else to do, lol!

  44. Danielle on January 4, 2011 at 12:10 am

In a relationship banned…if I was flying solo I’d be okay with it. I think the evening time right before bed talking and cuddling (and etc lol) is so important to bond the relationship. I was previously married and with a tv in the bedroom I really noticed that the intimacy was lacking and that time wasn’t respected by my mate.

  45. Kristina @ spabettie on January 4, 2011 at 12:11 am

I have never had a television in my bedroom – single or now with Jason ๐Ÿ™‚

I like to think of the bedroom as an electronic free room – except for an alarm clock. No laptops, no smart phones, no telephones.

Our bedroom is a relaxing and FLUFFY place. ๐Ÿ˜€

  46. Sarah @ Long Legs Healthy Life on January 4, 2011 at 12:12 am

I think in a situation where you have roomies, a tv in your bedroom is fine. Hubby and I have always outlawed a tv in our bedroom because laying in bed + tv = me instantly falling asleep. Great tip about trying different yoga instructors, I got really turned off of yoga for a few years because of a bad teacher, but I’m so glad I tried it again recently with a different instructor!

  47. Kristina @ spabettie on January 4, 2011 at 12:12 am

…and I LOVE Chelsea Handler (we saw her LIVE, from the Front Row!!), but I don’t know if I’d want to fall asleep to her!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  48. Sarah on January 4, 2011 at 12:13 am

I really want some veg refried beans now! Maybe with some tamales. Oh my.

We live in a one room studio apartment at the moment, so we have a t.v. in the bedroom, but are leaving it out in the other room when we move out in the next few weeks! I totally agree that the bedroom should strictly be a bedroom and nothing else. I’m looking forward to sleeping t.v. free ๐Ÿ™‚

  49. Rachel @ Grateful Girl Goes Gluten Free on January 4, 2011 at 12:29 am

I think tv in the bedroom can be good if your single, but it becomes such a distraction if you just want peace and quiet with your significant other.

Also I have been making vision boards for 2 years and seeing yours inspired me to make another for the new year!

  50. Priyanka on January 4, 2011 at 12:36 am

Laptop is the only tech gadget I can tolerate in the bedroom, not the TV. Eventually things may change but for now, TV in the bedroom is a big NO ๐Ÿ™‚
