Mite-y

Have you tried this stuff before?

Vegemite! It’s huge in Australia, and I’ve become good friends with a girl who is staying in Tucson from Australia for a while. Yesterday, I asked her if she liked Vegemite, and she said, “I have tubes of it in my room! I’ll bring you one.” Today we had a Vegemite tasting party. I put a little on my finger and had it the proper way when I came home: a thin layer on toast with lots of butter. It was gloriously salty.

I also had a very special mug of cereal- the kind that magically refills itself.

Cereal 2

It just seems to know if you need more milk to finish your cereal, and then more cereal to finish your milk. It goes on and on for a while 😉

Dinner was from PF Chang’s, which always makes me a little nostalgic:

Pf changs

For newer readers who may not know the story, the Pilot and I met at Starbucks (the details are here) and our first date was at PF Chang’s. It ended up lasting for hours and at the time, I was too young to enjoy a bottle of wine with him (my 21st birthday was a month after we met). He kept asking if I wanted to order some wine with dinner and I was so embarrassed to say “um, I’m not 21 yet.” Anyways, he didn’t end up being a serial killer like I had first thought (he was wayyyyy too nice, which freaked me out after my history with not-so-nice guys) and I survived chicken lettuce wraps without making a giant mess on myself.

It was pretty amazing to eat chicken lettuce wraps with the same guy while our baby sleeps upstairs <3

    Hey Gina!

Love that you gave vegimite a go.. its really good with avocado on toast too. Its something about the avo and saltiness that says um.. yummm.. 🙂
    xx

    • Fitnessista on June 29, 2012 at 12:25 am

i have an avocado in the fridge- snack tomorrow!!!

      • Ali on June 29, 2012 at 2:23 am

I was going to say the same… I’m surprised you liked it though! I’m proud to be an aussie but refused to eat it for such a long time growing up.

        • Lisa O on June 30, 2012 at 9:29 am

Aussie Aussie Aussie! So excited you’re trying the spread of our National pride!
I third that – avocado & Vegemite on toast or rice cakes (I sprinkled crumbled goats feta on too) was my go to lunch while pregnant. Hope you love it Gina!

  3. Laura @ She Eats Well on June 29, 2012 at 12:19 am

Vegemite eh? I most always prefer sweet on my toast, like AB and fresh jam (old school!). But perhaps I should give it a try!! Also, the PF Changs story, the way you just wrote it, is pretty cute. I still have never eaten there….crazy, I know…

  4. Sana on June 29, 2012 at 12:20 am

Aww 🙂 I am soo glad The Pilot was not a serial killer!

  5. Katelyn Block on June 29, 2012 at 12:22 am

Girl. Can we talk about how EVERYTHING seems to magically refill itself? I never buy cereal, but I always make a tonnnn of quinoa and then leave it in the fridge overnight. I use that as “cereal” with sunflower seeds, chocolate chips, and blueberries. Stevia+almond milk to finish. Seriously, the healthiest never-ending cereal bowl to exist.

    • Fitnessista on June 29, 2012 at 12:24 am

you are a genius! i have a HUGE thing of quinoa in the fridge but it has lentils in it. maybe not the best cereal option 🙂

    • stacy seratt on June 29, 2012 at 10:27 am

You can do that??? will have to try that

  6. Clare on June 29, 2012 at 12:33 am

You should have vegemite with scrambled eggs! the salty-ness of the vegemite compliments it perfectly.!

  7. Averie @ Averie Cooks on June 29, 2012 at 12:34 am

Vegemite is not for me…I am not a salt person and that stuff is for people are definitely are 🙂

  8. Shayna on June 29, 2012 at 12:47 am

I may have to try it with avocado. I had a boss once that liked avocado and equaal on toast. Omg, puke. I *did* buy a shaky thing of dulse at Whole Foods (speaking of sality)(I don’t have a Whole Foods anymore and went on a binge and bought crap I don’t know). Pleeeeeease help me! I don’t know what to do with it!

  9. Alexandra on June 29, 2012 at 12:47 am

umm my jaw just dropped to the floor. I’ve been an avid reader of your blog for a couple of years now and I knew that you and the pilot met at Starbucks, but had no idea that your first date was at PF Changs. My boyfriend and I had our first date at PF Changs too and he insisted that we start with the chicken lettuce wraps. I unfortunately made a mess of them and had to eat them with a fork. I’m a messy eater 🙂 He’s a police officer and I’ve been challenged along the way with everything that he has to deal with for work. Also night shift is hard for me, since sleeping while he’s out working keeps me awake thinking about the bad situations that he might run into. But it really helps me to read about you and the pilot. Thanks Gina!

  10. Coleen on June 29, 2012 at 1:13 am

I have read your blog for years yet somehow I missed that your first date with the Pilot was at PF Changs. My hubby and I also had our first date at PF Changs over 7 years ago. Too funny.

  12. Kelly @ My love affair with running on June 29, 2012 at 1:39 am

Such a cute story!! I am Australian and NOT a vegemite fan… I am surprised you liked it first time up!

  13. kayla on June 29, 2012 at 1:49 am

Vegemite is GREAT in meat sauces (like with lamb!)

  14. Nicole on June 29, 2012 at 2:51 am

I’m a New Zealander and a MASSIVE vegemite fan! I’m living in Taiwan atm, and 3 pots may or may not (/may) have magically made their way into my luggage 🙂 Vegemite, butter and cheese on toast is amazeeee, plus vegemite and cheese scrolls = must bake! Super easy, and supppper yummy!

  15. Mel on June 29, 2012 at 3:00 am

So glad you discovered vegemite! I live in Oz and I love it 🙂 Try it with melted cheddar or goats cheese. It also goes well with poached/boiled/scrambled eggs.. dip buttered vegemite toast into the yolk. Love your blog by the way.. been reading it for a few years now. And congrats on the new baby, she looks so sweet!

    • queenoffitness on June 29, 2012 at 3:39 pm

oh mel, i think it is an acquired test. i’ve been having trouble with bursitis in my right hip so instead of going to a doc who would just prescribe meds i did some research on homeopathic treatments. vegemite was listed as a suggestion and i tried the vegemite with an egg one morning for breakfast and i about vomited. i made a sandwich so sadly i had to toss the toast half with the vegemite on it. my parents have an aussie friend and he bought some for me from a world market store here in the states. i was really bummed that i didn’t like it. it must have been the saltiness because i am not a salt person.

      • Mel on June 30, 2012 at 4:26 am

Try spreading it realllly thin (with butter/olive oil underneath).

  16. emma on June 29, 2012 at 3:08 am

Ha! I’m australian and it’s awesome seeing vegemite on here! I’m currently 9 weeks pregnant and craving salt like crazy, so vegemite on warm toasted crumpets with heaps of butter is making a BIG appearance in my life. If you make twisty bread or cinnamon scrolls, try making vegemite and cheese twisty bread/scrolls – it’s the bomb. I grew up on the stuff, I could go for hours… but I won’t. Enjoy x

  17. Tara @ Sweat like a Pig on June 29, 2012 at 3:16 am

I’m surprised you liked it! My husband is Canadian and any time I bring it out he gags! In fact, I’ve never met anyone that likes it that hasn’t been brought up on it. It’s definitely a great hangover cure. Vegemite and cheese FTW!

  18. Lou on June 29, 2012 at 3:32 am

Mmmm… vegemite. I’m an Aussie living in Germany and have 2 jars in my pantry! I get such cravings for it! My favourite is simple: vegemite, cheese and lettuce on a breadroll. But Nicole’s suggestion is good too – vegemite and cheese scrolls! Also, for me – vegemite and butter on toast help with hangovers/feeling ill. When I don’t feel like eating and need to it really helps, it’s simple and interesting enough!

Oh and a very cute story about you and the Pilot meeting 🙂

  19. Emma on June 29, 2012 at 3:52 am

A teaspoon stirred into a cup of hot water makes for a delicious drink. However, the British version called Marmite is better. 😉

  20. Geetha on June 29, 2012 at 4:05 am

What is hat green thing next to the chicken? Seaweed salad?

  21. Emma @ Bake Sew Grow on June 29, 2012 at 4:08 am

I love vegemite (although I agree with poster above that marmite is better 😉 ), I lived in Australia for a while and we were on a tour and this guy made a piece of toast and REALLY layered the vegemite on. Like a super massive thick layer of it. He took a big bite, then made the funniest, most repulsed face I’ve ever seen and said “oh. I thought it was chocolate spread.” One of my favourite memories ever! Haha poor guy x

  22. yolande on June 29, 2012 at 4:29 am

I am currently travelling overseas in Australia (I am Canadian) and tryed vegemite a few weeks back. I put a huge blob as I would typically with almond butter on a slice of toast and took a bite. Verdict : DISGUSTING. I guess I was supposed to do a thin layer not a huge blob hahaha…. needless to say I think I need to try it again the proper way tommorrow morning for breaky 🙂

  23. Geetha on June 29, 2012 at 4:32 am

What is that green thing next to the chicken? Seaweed salad?

  24. Jess on June 29, 2012 at 4:40 am

I’m an Aussie! I love Vegemite! My girls love it even more then me. Best way is with toast and butter but it also tastes good with melted cheese. It is high in Vitamin B!

  25. lindsay on June 29, 2012 at 6:44 am

we STOCK up on vegemite every time we come back from New Zealand, it’s where my husband is from. It is GLORIOUS! ANd i just ran out. Sad day. Enjoy it with buttah and or tomato on toast. mmm, yum!

  26. Conni on June 29, 2012 at 6:56 am

Vegemite is a gift from above. My sister spent a month in Australia a few summers ago and when she got back it was a Vegemite party for like a solid 3 months.

  27. Lizz on June 29, 2012 at 7:13 am

Ignore whomever said Marmite was better. Marmite is THE DEVIL.

I second the motion for a teaspoon of Veg stirred into boiling water. It is a nice electrolyte-replenishing drink for ill folk.

One of my buddies is a full-on Iron Man competitor. He swears on Vegemite sandwiches when he trains, too. He packs the spread on a little thicker than what most people prefer but he’s been successful, so what do I know?

And my third suggestion is to add a little Veg to pizza dough. It really enhances the dough flavour.

  28. Jodie on June 29, 2012 at 7:46 am

I love vegemite on toast best. As a kid I would make peanut butter and vegemite sandwiches all the time, and I still make it sometimes. Anyone takers??
I’m Australian but living in the U.S. now so my vegemite stash is rationed these days. 😀

  29. Claire @ Live and Love to Eat on June 29, 2012 at 7:49 am

My husband and I had our first date at PF Changs, too! We go back each year on our first date “anniversary” (May 8th). 🙂

You and the Pilot are so cute =)

  31. AJ on June 29, 2012 at 8:47 am

I LOVE Vegemite (or Marmite, if you want the UK version, which I found in more international stores)! My first experience with it was terrible though– a couple of my co-counselors during one of my summers at camp were from Australia. They asked if I had ever tried it or knew what it was, and I said no. They told me it was chocolate based so my mouth was set for something completely different and I was mildly traumatized.

Now, I love it–I like eating it with butter on rye toast as a breakfast. So salty and delicious!

  32. Felicia on June 29, 2012 at 9:02 am

i tried vegemite when i lived in australia (for 6 months) and everyone in the states would say how gross it was, but that i had to try it and to be prepared. so one drunken night i had my house mate give me some and i ended up liking it and wasn’t even disappointed! (i don’t think the rum had anything to do with that… hahah) never seen it in a tube, but that looks more convenient. enjoy!

  33. Silvia @ skinny jeans food on June 29, 2012 at 9:10 am

Vegemite??? you are too polite! This stuff reeks!! It can only be loved by people of Australian/New Zealand and British roots how got used to it as babies 🙂

I love the never ending cereal bowl!

My boyfriend in high school was from New Zealand and his family always had vegemite in the fridge. We used to eat it on wheat thins with laughing cow cheese – the cheese mellows out the flavor a little 🙂

  36. Kelly on June 29, 2012 at 9:51 am

What type of milk do you use for your cereal. I’m trying to avoid dairy due to “tummy” issues.

BTW I LOVE that daddy yankee song. Been on my ipod forever!!! Such a good one! 🙂

If you like P.F. Changs lettuce wraps, I made these last week and they were awesome! I didn’t bother with cucumber and I added sauteed mushrooms to the filling mixture along with chopped water chestnuts- they were delicious wrapped up in some Bibb lettuce leaves!
