Much better

Hi friends <3 Thank you so much for the feel better wishes last night. I woke up feeling a thousand times better, so I’ll be taking it easy and hydrating like crazy today before I go to work for a few hours.

The Pilot knew exactly what would make me feel better:

Soup and salad from Choice, eaten at the madre’s

photo (87)

(Veggie soup and a salad with mixed greens, jicama, beets, olive, avocado, baked tofu and ranch dressing)

and a field trip to Whole Paycheck.

bag

Now I’m on the inside, looking at my list
Organic chicken, kale salad
And a lemon twist
Some girl in yoga pants is looking at me funny
I’m just trying to find a decent Pinot Noir
For under 20! Then I take it to the
Cheese counter: Humboldt fog!
Just ran out sir!
Take it easy man, I try to calm myself
I’ve been on edge ever since they took
Kombucha off the shelf..

[Watch the video if you haven’t already.. it’s pretty hilare]

We got some staples (smoothie supplies, gluten-free bread and pretzels, organic fruit and frozen berries) + quite a few random purchases, including these:

sardines

Sardines, which I’ve never had before- I’m a little creeped out! I’ve been craving cheese so much lately, so I think I may be low in calcium since I haven’t been feasting on salad beasts as often. Sardines are a great source of calcium, iron and protein… so we’ll see how they taste 😉 I may have to film it haha. I also got my mini Vosges fix: the Napa bar 🙂

A magazine, for some meal ideas:

magazine

and ingredients for those gluten-free bars. Hopefully I’ll be able to make this before work and get the recipe up today 😀

Breakfast this morning was a smoothie, per usual:

smoothie

If it ain’t broke…

-1.5 C almond milk

-1 small banana

-1 scoop Sun Warrior

-1 T raw cacao powder

-handful of spinach

-cinnamon + a little honey

-1 C mixed frozen organic berries

and a chocolate almond butter macaroon… just to make sure they’re good before I mail them out 😉

roons

Off to a doctor’s appt and then to the post office!

See ya in a little while with a Family post <3

xoxo

Gina

Something to talk about: What run/random food purchases have you picked up lately? I always love hearing about new things 🙂 Have you tried sardines before? Creepy or delicious?

Glad you’re feeling better. LOVE the “Whole Paycheck” nickname. Hahaha. I literally laughed outloud. That’s perfect.

I can’t wait until Charlotte’s Whole Foods opens! I miss my Atlanta store so much 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 11:24 am

LOVE the atlanta whole foods! the hot bar is legendary

  3. Kelly @ Laughter, Strength, and Food on July 1, 2011 at 11:23 am

My parents always used to eat sardines when I was growing up and they still do…I just could never bring myself to try one! I just started liking fish a couple of years ago and they are just a little too fishy for me still. Can’t wait to hear how you liked them (or didn’t!)!! 😉

  4. April on July 1, 2011 at 11:26 am

    Hi Gina!
Ahhhh, sardines, my dad use to eat them all the time when i was a kid and i would gross out, HOWEVER i have been contemplating trying them lately, let me know how it goes:) They are filled w/Omega 3’s right?

Have you thought of adding liquid calcium to you smoothies? I am doing this as my dr. told me to add more calcium as i don’t get enough from dairy (don’t eat much of it) and i LOVE the blueberry and strawberry they have at Whole Foods…it is PERFECT in my smoothie. Just thought i would throw it out there.

    Glad you feel better!!

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 11:28 am

oooh good to know! i’ll be on the lookout for it

  5. Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat on July 1, 2011 at 11:29 am

I’m so glad you got sardines!! Kath actually inspired me to try them, and as grossed out as I was by their appearance, they were actually really good! I just mashed them up with a bunch of veggies, just like I would if making a tuna salad. SO tasty! I hope you like them!

  6. Jordan @ food, sweat, and beers on July 1, 2011 at 11:29 am

I actually like to swing by the international market every time I’m in the area and just grab the coolest looking thing that I see for under about $5. The last one I got was a “hot curry” snack mix, sort of like if India did a makeover on the Bold n Spicy chex mix…. then turned the heat up x 30!

It was a little too much of a kick for average snacking, but I’ll definitely go back there to try something else new. Maybe mango lassi pops…

  7. Tamara on July 1, 2011 at 11:34 am

So glad you’re feeling better. And thanks for sharing that magazine cover… may have to pick that one up myself!

  8. Crystal on July 1, 2011 at 11:39 am

I love sardines! Except one time, I was eating a can of them and I tasted something funny in my mouth. I picked through the sardines with my fork and saw that one of them had a bunch of FISH EGGS in them! Ew ew ew ew!! I mean, I know people eat roe and caviar, but this was just narsty. So now I pick through my sardines before I eat them. I hope you don’t come across any sardine caviar, lol.

  9. Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee on July 1, 2011 at 11:39 am

I’ve started buying goat cheese more often and I cant get enough of it. I’ve been putting it on everything!

I haven’t had sardines, I just cannot get down with the fishies. My parents eat them though and love them!

  10. Elle on July 1, 2011 at 11:41 am

I am obsessed with sardines, they are actually one of my favorite foods! Everyone makes fun of me, but I don’t care 🙂 I like the Crown Prince skinless & boneless (that makes a difference, especially if you’re a first-timer) in olive oil. I eat them on Kavli or Wasa crackers. Cheap, healthy and delicious! Good luck…

  11. mi-an on July 1, 2011 at 11:41 am

good morning! i actually LOVE sardines. i grew up in the Philippines and we ate a lot of sardines back then, so everytime I eat it, it brings me back to my childhood. Plus it’s very nutritious! I started cooking with Millet lately. and i love it! i was in in quinoa craze..now onto millet…next i want to try amaranth. 🙂

  12. Chelsa on July 1, 2011 at 11:41 am

That video just made my day hahah my boyfriend and I always joke that you have to watch out at whole foods. We try to go early in the morning or late at night because it’s too hectic.

  13. Sarah on July 1, 2011 at 11:43 am

Newest purchase: Spring roll wrappers– You would love! I bought all the fixins (including smoked salmon and avacado) and made my own!!!!!

  14. Jessica @ Dairy Free Betty on July 1, 2011 at 11:44 am

That’s too funny – I just tried sardines for the first time the other day – the ones I had didn’t have much flavor at all – I doused them in lemon juice and salt and pepper – but it still wasn’t flavorful enough… maybe do what Angela said – and use like tuna!!

  15. Laury @ thefitnessdish on July 1, 2011 at 11:53 am

I posted that video on last weeks Friday 5 hahaha…SO SO SO funny! That’s my fav line about Kombucha, because I was seriously on edge when that happened and had a similar hissie fit when something else was out that week. Oh…and the cayenne pepper guy…there was a girl last week that LITERALLY threw her bag and her rear end in the MIDDLE of the aisle, on the ground, in front of all the chocolate, like pulling out all the bars. All I wanted to do was get Michael’s Newman chocolate that he wanted and she was all up in my grill!

Sardines are super healthy but creep me out big time. Something about the mini fish. However, it’s a very legit pregnancy craving 😉

  16. Kristen @ Chocolate Covered Kristen on July 1, 2011 at 11:53 am

I picked up Trader Joe’s Organic Tomatillo Roasted Yellow Chili Salsa – sooooooo so good. I’m usually not a jarred salsa fan at all, but this stuff is great! I have been mixing it with plain greek yogurt and using it as a dip or eating it solo with everything.

  17. Heather on July 1, 2011 at 11:53 am

I tried a processed/frozen food lately that I am OBSESSED with: Alexia brand sweet potato puffs. They are like a cross between a sweet tater tot with a mashed/baked sweet potatoy center. SO GOOD.

  18. Errign on July 1, 2011 at 11:54 am

Random food purchases: the BEST mango ever at Earthfare, soyboy baked tofu, peanuts to make peanut butter & a pretzel the size of my FACE at the farmer’s market 🙂

  19. meghan@ struggle muffins on July 1, 2011 at 11:54 am

Sometimes all a girl needs is a night off and a morning stroll through Whole Foods to feel better 🙂 I haven’t bought anything that deviates from my peanut butter and chocolate-heavy norm lately, perhaps its high time I made an adventurous food purchase. I don’t know if I have it in me to go for sardines, but I heartily respect your choice. More power to ya sistafren.

  20. Holly @ The Runny Egg on July 1, 2011 at 11:59 am

I have not tried sardines and I’m not sure I ever will! I buy canned salmon sometimes and the bones in there creep me out, and I think sardines come whole, right? No thanks.

I feel like all I’ve been eating is produce — I am such a wimp when it comes to hot weather that all I want to do is drink water, eat fruit and veggies and sit in my air conditioned house.

  21. kim on July 1, 2011 at 12:01 pm

sardines are incredibly delish w/ salt, pepper, lemon squeeze & chopped flat leaf parsley on finn crisp crackers. or you can do the alton brown sammy & mix w/ avocado –
try smoked sardines next time – really good!

  22. Cait @ Urban Fencepost on July 1, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Sardines. Yeah, can’t say that I’ve ever eaten them (well when I ate meat/seafood). My dad, on the other hand, eats them all the time. I subscribe to Real Simple. Love that magazine.

  23. Gina @ Running to the kitchen on July 1, 2011 at 12:07 pm

Glad you’re feeling better. I always drool when I see your macaroons!

  24. Tracy C. on July 1, 2011 at 12:11 pm

Yum!!! I think that some of those roons may be coming my way. 🙂 They look SO good….as always! Can’t wait to actually get to try them!

Glad that you are feeling better.

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 3:00 pm

      they definitely are! 🙂

  25. Laura on July 1, 2011 at 12:12 pm

I love that video 🙂 My husband showed it to me and I died laughing.

The only new thing I’ve tried lately was Japanese food. Seriously, I live in a box of 4 different types of food, so this was big for me 🙂

No sardines here. I don’t do the seafood thing.

  26. AJ on July 1, 2011 at 12:15 pm

I LOVE Real simple. The only problem is it is a little TOO simple and I’m always finished reading my issue way to fast! haha.

  27. Beth (Well I'll Be) on July 1, 2011 at 12:18 pm

I don’t think I could ever try a sardine. They totally creep me out, but I’ll be interested to see if you like them. A video of it would be hilarious! My recent random purchase was Fennel. I’ve never had it before!

  28. Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg on July 1, 2011 at 12:20 pm

Glad you’re feeling better!! A trip to Whole Foods always seems to make me feel better 🙂

  29. Ashley on July 1, 2011 at 12:27 pm

I bought Brads Raw Kale Chips in the ‘Nasty hot Jalopeno’ flavor. In my opinion they were just nasty. I prefer to make my own with just olive oil and sea salt. I was sooo hoping to like them too 🙁

  30. Anna on July 1, 2011 at 12:36 pm

Sardines are best eaten in the privacy of your own home…but they are fab on toast 😀

  31. kaila @ healthy helper! on July 1, 2011 at 1:04 pm

Glad you’re feeling better! Recently I picked up some kamut puffs, oasis black bean dip (LOVE!), enrico’s no salt added salsa (another FAVORITE!!), and chocolate amazing grass!

  32. chelsey @ clean eating chelsey on July 1, 2011 at 1:07 pm

sun dried tomatoes not the most bizarre but bizzare for you is probably a lot more normal for me.I got hemp flour from ebay a while ago thats raw and vegan which I lurve.sardines are awesome!!my dad and I would eat a tin of sardines with saltine crackers for a quick lunch. 🙂 oh how I miss those days.

  34. Yolie @ Practising Wellness on July 1, 2011 at 1:18 pm

Yay! So glad you’re mended 🙂 Sardines are delicious! So good on toast – and full of calcium like you said. Hope the doctor’s appointment goes well, have a beautiful day! xyx

i enjoy sardines out of the can, on a cracker with a squeeze of lemon.
    enjoy!

  36. Emily @ Sweating Sugar on July 1, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Sardines in tomato sauce on hot buttered toast!! Yumalicious. Truly. x

  38. Jessica @ Sushi and Sit-Ups on July 1, 2011 at 1:26 pm

I’m a fan of sardine sandwiches or on crackers. It’s pretty hearty and I like the saltiness. Let us know how you like it!

  39. Katie on July 1, 2011 at 1:42 pm

OMG I adore sardines! We used to eat them on vacation all the time ontop of crackers. I even liked them as a kid! They are the perfect amount of saltiness and deliciousness. Yep, pretty sure I’m going to have to get some this weekend.

My boyfriend and I went to the Asian market a couple weeks ago and bought fish eggs (you know the tiny pinkish balls they put ontop of sushi?). We finished them up last night ontop of trout and also ontop of the rice and even the vegetables. Love them.

  40. Liz @ Tip Top Shape on July 1, 2011 at 1:45 pm

Sardines creep me out, too, so I have not tried them. An exciting food purchase I had recently was Blood Orange sorbet from Ciao Bella. My grocery store had a sale 4 for 5 dollars. I loved it so much that I went back and bought a whole bunch. I think I practically wiped out their entire stock, lol.

  41. Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life on July 1, 2011 at 1:49 pm

I don’t think I’ve really picked anything up new or exciting lately. I guess I’ve been going more with the “If it ain’t broke” mentality. 😉

I’ve never tried sardines, and I’m still not ready to either!

  42. Ali @ urbanfruitbat on July 1, 2011 at 1:51 pm

Hey lady! I am very glad to hear you are feeling better. I think you should watch the Good Eats episode that Alton Brown did on Sardines. He had some really fun and creative ways to use them! He is my food God, I know you love Bobby F, but Alton Brown may just steal your heart yet. I haven’t really gotten anything weird lately. I got five pounds of Medeejew (madjewl to the rest of the world, lol) dates from work the other day! They even put my name on the label!

  43. Sarah on July 1, 2011 at 1:58 pm

I have a question…I’m hoping you can help me with some suggestions! I’m about 10 weeks along in my pregnancy and I’m having a really tough time eating healthy food. They used to be my entire diet and now…let’s just say…veggies are I are on a break. My biggest issue is that a wake up in the middle of the night with some of the most severe hunger pains I’ve ever felt. I need some help figuring out snacks to keep by my bed that I can munch on in the middle of the night that aren’t solid carbs and that will give me a little protein without waking me up completely (as in that I have to go cook–because let’s face it cooking just turns my stomach!) Thanks for reading my rant!!

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 2:54 pm

      congrats!!
honestly, i say go for the carbs. they’re the only things that helped me to feel better. leave some saltines or pretzels by the bed- that will do the trick

  44. Hillary on July 1, 2011 at 2:05 pm

Sardines freak me out, but I am SO intrigued by them!

  45. Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on July 1, 2011 at 2:20 pm

How are you liking the Naga bar? True story: a couple years ago we (in my office) ordered a ton of mini-Vosges in bulk to send to clients with their xmas cards. One of said bars in bulk was the Naga. We had a lot of leftovers and naturally they got gobbled up…except the Nagas. We still have several boxes’ worth…nearly 3 years later. I think everyone’s expression when they tried it was the visual equivalent of “??…!!…no.”

So, they’re a little old but…if you want some leftover Nagas they’re yours, hehee. 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 2:54 pm

i’m scared to try it now haha

      • Diana (Soap & Chocolate) on July 1, 2011 at 4:47 pm

It’s definitely not nasty or anything, but let’s just say curry belongs on Indian Food Wednesday and not in my chocolate. 🙂

  46. Allison @ Food for Healing on July 1, 2011 at 2:22 pm

i’ve been loving my Cream of Wheat lately, nothing unusual. I dont think i’ve had sardines before, but i do enjoy oysters! yum. just with a little salt and pepper is perfect.

  47. An on July 1, 2011 at 2:49 pm

Hey Gina….new poster here…I’ve been reading your blog for ages but never comment (that already makes me a creeper, and I haven’t even got to the sardine thing ha ha)…anyway just wanted to say your posts always make me happy, and many ring true (my hubby and I both work in international development so are apart a LOT)…anyway as a potential “creeper” myself I just had to comment on the sardines as I have been LIVING off them lately!! I have just found out I’m pregnant too, so maybe our bones are calling for them…anyway keep up with the brilliant bloggin’ and thanks for sharing 🙂

    • Fitnessista on July 1, 2011 at 2:50 pm

thank you so much for saying hi and for reading 🙂

  48. June on July 1, 2011 at 3:05 pm

I bought sardines around Christmas time because I saw on a few HLB’s about them and well it didnt seem bad. But I could never bring myself to open them and ended up throwing them away. 🙁

I just walked over to Whole Paycheck at lunch time to get one thing! And I walked out with 3. The random purchase(s) were a big pretzel to enjoy after my 14 mile run tomorrow and some grilled chicken off the salad bar to put on my usual friday night pre long run homemade pizza. decided to add meat this time which i never do!

  49. Gillbear on July 1, 2011 at 3:06 pm

Got stuck in home sense when I realised they had Chia Goodness, Kodiak Cakes Mixes, Kahlua Coffee and a whole lot of other stuff at discount prices 😀

  50. Hannah on July 1, 2011 at 3:11 pm

I love sardines. They are way less fishy and more buttery than canned tuna. My fav sandwich is mustard, avocado, onion and sardine…kinda similar to lox and cream cheese with the creamy avo + smoky fish.
