My Kinda Triathlon

Hi friends! How are ya? Hope youโ€™re having a great night <3

This afternoon was pretty chill- I took care of work/biznazz things and had a lil snack between the hustle and bustle.

pumpkin (2)

All hail the pumpkin blob ๐Ÿ™‚

pumpkin

-2/3 C-ish of pumpkin

-1 scoop of Sun Warrior

-Stevia, cinnamon, gingah, cloves

BAT EYES! (aka goji berries- on promo right now!)

-Drizzle of maple syrup

Lunch was this beauty:

kale

Kale salad topped with Amyโ€™s Mac nโ€™ Cheese with DAIYA!!!!!!!!! (Ashley saw me squeal with joy when I saw it at Whole Paycheck)

The only thing that would make this meal better would be if it was made with brown rice pasta instead of rice pasta, but Iโ€™m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth ๐Ÿ˜‰

Are those finger marks??
finger

I would never ๐Ÿ™‚

It was amazing fuel because I participated in a Gina triathlon today:

IMG00429-20101028-2005 IMG00428-20101028-2005

(Sweaty Betty)

Yoga

IMG00425-20101028-1545

(My first Ashtanga class- I LOVED it)

Run

A little over 2 miles with Katy ๐Ÿ™‚

and

DANCE TRANCE

IMG00427-20101028-1807

Which had me feeling so fly like a G-6 ๐Ÿ˜€

Thatโ€™s my kinda triathlon.. especially since I canโ€™t ride a real bike. Or swim ๐Ÿ˜‰ Minor details, eh?

(Just joking around, too- definitely lot belittling the crazy impressive amount of endurance and training it takes to do a real triathlon. Thatโ€™s fo sho)

If you could make up your own triathlon, what would it consist of??

Iโ€™m off to do the dinner thang and shower ๐Ÿ™‚

See ya in the AM <3

xoxo

Gina

Looks like a great day! Since I don’t like (actually, have never tried) open water swimming, it wouldn’t include that! I’d be down for running, maybe some Body Combat, and Body Pump. Oh, and any of those could be subbed out for a Whole Foods event!

Ha! That’s a great triathlon. Sounds much more fun than biking and swimming for miles and miles. Mine would be Bikram Yoga followed by a trapeze session and ending with a nice long horseback riding session. With spa treatments in between each one. Can I add that to the rules of my triathlon?

  9. Jenny on October 28, 2010 at 10:22 pm

I LOVE your own personlized triathlon! Mine would consist of some running, spin class, and definitely yoga to top it off!

my tri would probably be running, elipticizing (yah i know that’s not a word, but that’s what I call it) and then yoga to stretch it all out because i’m soooo bad at stretching after working out and my little legs are yelling at me now!

I love that white top! So pretty!

  16. Jeanine on October 28, 2010 at 11:27 pm

After the Marie Claire article and the accompanying backlash, I decided to be more honest about how blogs made me feel, as a reader, in an attempt to keep bloggers accountable and myself honest. That said, I’m uncomfortable with the fact that you worked out three times today, and not just because it happened once, but because you often have “two-a-days”. On one hand, I know you genuinely enjoy working out and the mental and physical benefits it gives you and on the other, I often find myself cringing at the way you describe your work outs.

It’s a fine line, I think, between writing about food and exercise and being obsessive about food and exercise. Lately, I’ve felt more and more like you’ve started treading on the “obsessive” side when it comes to the latter. I’ve always been a friendly commentor in the past and am not trying to change that now, but as a reader, it’s something I thought could be examined. Not because you necessarily need to change it, but because you do blog for a (at least partial) living and that holds you to a bit of a different standard.

    What do you think?

    • Stacey on October 29, 2010 at 6:53 am

I can see where you’re coming from, for sure. However, I also see this time that the Pilot is away as a time for Gina to really enjoy herself and do things that keep her busy and happy. You never know how much you will miss someone until they are gone, keeping yourself busy mentally and physically would sure help with feeling sad and lonely. She won’t be in Orlando forever and I think she is just taking advantage of all of the fun stuff while she can….it’s back to Valdizzy soon!

      • Fitnessista on October 29, 2010 at 8:02 am

you’re totally right- working out has been a great mood lifter since the pilot went away. if i’m not working, working out, blogging, or doing SOMETHING, once i stop, the fact that he isn’t here hits me pretty hard

    • Fitnessista on October 29, 2010 at 7:58 am

i’m sorry to hear you feel that way. i think that if you read a blog that makes you feel uncomfortable, don’t read it… for sure
i’m also saddened to hear you compare me to what was discussed in the marie claire article, particularly since i’ve always make an effort to promote balance on the bloggy
i’m just having fun and since i was off yesterday, i thought i’d live it up a little. i LOVE fitness classes and doing that kind of stuff is fun for me- especially since we didn’t have anything in valdizzy (or i’d have to teach it), i’m kind of in heaven with all of the cool classes that are offered here. also, as a fitness professional, it’s important for me to learn about new things and become educated on what’s out there, since i lived in a cave for 3 years ๐Ÿ™‚
i’m taking today off since i did that yesterday, and made sure to eat an excellent recovery dinner. i don’t see anything obsessive with that. obsessive would be if i did it for weight loss, or worked out because i could eat more, or justify dessert, etc. i work out because it’s fun, fuel my body the way it needs to be fueled, and eat dessert when i feel like it, not because i feel like i “earned” it.
i always try to be responsible with what i blog, because it is my #1 job and my true passion. i probably won’t do another 3-a-day for a while, but i think every purple moon, it’s not a big deal.

      • Jeanine on October 29, 2010 at 9:57 am

        Gina,
I wasn’t so much comparing your blog to what was discussed in the article as using the article as a reference point in time to where I thought the blog world as a whole took a step back and reevaluated what it meant to be a food blogger and also a reader.

I am glad that you are enjoying your time in Orlando.

        • Fitnessista on October 29, 2010 at 10:12 am

          i gotcha ๐Ÿ™‚
and i think it’s very important for conversations like this to occur in the blogworld. blogs are about conversation

    • Kori on October 29, 2010 at 8:22 am

Why do I feel like there wouldn’t have been a similar sort of “concern” shown if Gina had binged on 3 different desserts throughout the day? Just doesn’t feel sincere — and you probably ruined her work out high.

      Gina, you kick ass.

-Reader who never posts but loves the crap outta this blog

      • Jeanine on October 29, 2010 at 9:49 am

        Kori,
One of the issues that came up after the MC article was the idea that anyone with an opinion different from the blogger was unable to state it for fear of being massacred in the comments section. When we’re all living in our food blog bubble (for lack of a better phrase), it can be easy to look at something disordered and think, “oh that’s TOTALLY normal!!!”
That said, my comment was respectful and honest and I asked for her opinion. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it probably makes for a better blog for everyone. For you to insinuate that my “concern” is misplaced and also to assume that I would rather see her binge completely misses the point of my original comment.

    • Anna @ History Running Girl on October 29, 2010 at 9:44 am

I personally feel uncomfortable reading comments like this, and I feel like a concern for the blogger would be better addressed in a personal email to her versus a public comment.

    • Molly on October 29, 2010 at 12:06 pm

I see where you are coming from as well, but I think you need to look at the whole theme of this blog first. One reason I stopped reading other food blogs was that some of the bloggers were “training” for things or exercising and continually talking about how tight their jeans were or how hungry they are. I don’t think I have ever once read on this site where Gina discusses weight, clothing size etc. While I don’t have an eating disorder or suffer from anything that makes this kind of talk uncomfortable, I feel it is irresponsible for me to continue reading these types of things or giving the blogger “hits” on their site. Gina (I believe) promotes a “healthy” lifestyle, not a “skinny” one. I have been a competitive runner for 20+ years and am a RD. I show the teenagers I counsel Gina’s site because it is positive, informative and fun. I feel comfortable doing this because I think she writes responsibly.
Two other things: Gina could of easily left out her exercises for the day – but she chose to show them to us, her readers. Also, Gina was one of the only bloggers who didn’t jump on the “bash Marie Claire wagon” blindly. I think she created an open and honest discussion about the article, which obviously was biased and gross, but with shreds of truth that needed to be addressed.

That being said – I do think you were respectful in your comment and I hope you don’t feel attacked.

      • Fitnessista on October 29, 2010 at 3:58 pm

thsnk you so much. and you’re totally right- not once on this blog will you see a pic of me in a sports bra/bikini, weight, measurements or clothing size- that info doesn’t help anyone!

    • Libby on October 29, 2010 at 9:40 pm

As a collegiate rower who is constantly doing double days to keep up with the competition (workouts daily, double days 2-4 times per week), I have no problem with three-a-days. If you look at this blog here: http://usrowing2010nz.blogspot.com/ following one of the girls representing the US at the World Rowing Championship this week, her boat is doing up to 3 PRACTICES A DAY! Those practices can be anywhere from 90 minutes to 3 hours. These athletes, of course, are tapering before the big event, but in order to be at their best on race day those three practices daily are mandatory. While Gina is of course not an internationally competitive athlete, nor am I, I strongly believe that it is okay to work out up to 2 times daily if you’re eating healthily and still feeling strong as an athlete. My collegiate team has a full 13 days of double day practices, 2.5 hours each, every spring break, which is of course not sustainable without a break immediately after. But that intense training helps break through a rut, plateau, boredom, whatever, and ready for race season in the spring.

And my triathlon would be a 2K rowing race, bike, and hike.

      • Elizabeth on October 30, 2010 at 12:56 pm

I think this is a great point — athletes train multiple times per day. Being fit and happy and moving your body does not have to be for weight loss or because you have some sort of disorder. Women are strong, remember? They can be active more than once a day without needing an intervention.

        • Louise on November 1, 2010 at 9:53 am

Ahh, how I wish I could “like” this comment. It’s so tiring to see woman bandy about the words “exercise disorder” because someone’s hobby or idea of a good time involves movement and not say, drinking or shopping. I would never say to my friends who go clubbing “you did what?! Danced aaalll night?!?! Again? We need to talk”. Physical activities don’t belong solely in the domain of weight loss tools.
I should clarify I’m not attacking any commenters here – just the idea in general that woman are weak and only move to lose weight, which this discussion brings to light.

          • Dee on November 1, 2010 at 7:29 pm

what a great feminist-perspective point, no one talks about this issue this way, I’m going to pass it on. Absolutely, physical activity as fun should not be a crazy or novel concept for a female and I don’t think we’d be talking about a man like this. thanks for this point.

Gina, I am sooooo happy you did ashtanga! I am grinning from ear to ear. I love and respect all yoga, all traditions, but ashtanga is the motherload for me. The granddaddy from which Baptiste, Power, Flow, Vinyasa based styles all are derived from.

I cannot wait to see how your practice deepens and unfolds. I used to do the full primary series every day, for years. Then I had a child and although i cant do the full primary series daily anymore due to time limits, I will always be loyal to ashtanga as my 1st and foremost lover ๐Ÿ™‚

Can’t wait to talk to you about it in San Fran!

    • Katie on October 29, 2010 at 8:05 am

I take the “intervals” back and would prefer BOOTCAMP!

  33. Jennie @ SeeJennRun on October 29, 2010 at 8:17 am

In terms of working out “too much” I think yesterday was fine. Most days before a yoga or pilates class I will do 2 miles as a warm up. Usually, I run at least 2 miles with my dogs during the day, just to get moving. If you ran 13 miles, did an hour yoga class and THEN a dance class, I would be worried. I think spending time doing something you love, and then telling people about it is awesome. On that note, I probably spend an hour dancing around my house like an idiot and don’t call it exercise. :/

If anything, Gina, I think you’re one of the more balanced blogs out there. Many blogs that I’ve been reading are training for races and eat more because they are running millions of miles, or stopped posting healthy food all together and only post butter and sugar filled baked goods. It’s still entertaining to read and I still think they’re awesome, but I like having this blog to go to when I want some healthy recipes or workout motivation.

  38. Dana Marie on October 29, 2010 at 9:23 am

I don’t see why your working out was inflammatory to someone? That’s weird- I know sometimes I just find your ideal life motivating – nice car, top tier products-never having to compromise, friends, seemly effortless lifestyle -ie no menial labor, always viewed in a positive light by peers, etc.
anyway – I enjoyed the sweaty betty pics– I like to see hard work results!

    • Jennie @ SeeJennRun on October 29, 2010 at 9:45 am

It kind of seems like you’re offering a backhanded compliment here. I’m pretty sure living months away from your husband while he is deployed is not ideal. Things aren’t always what they appear.

Sorry if I’m stepping on your toes, Gina, this just really rubbed me the wrong way.

      • Jennie @ SeeJennRun on October 29, 2010 at 9:50 am

oh my gosh, where is your darling tank from?? I LOVE it!

Days where you are able to go to multiple classes are so fun! Whenever I take a vacation day from work, I plan to attend classes at the gym that I usually can’t. I figure one day of multiple workouts is fine as long as I’m doing it for fun, not for extra calorie burn, ya know? And judging by your classes, it sounds like a SUPER fun day!

My triathalon would be running, Body Pump, then Yoga. I think I actually have done that before!

  40. Tara on October 29, 2010 at 9:38 am

  41. LisaG on October 29, 2010 at 9:47 am

My kids (as well as others) take PE,sports, dance, karate, etc. and it’s not considered overdoing it. For example they may do 1 1/2 hrs. of a sport or PE at school, then 2 hrs. of dance a couple of nights. It’s not to lose weight; it’s because they love it and they have energy. It is also shown they do better in school when involved in sports. Why is it different if an adult does this? Love your blog Gina. Since I know you personally I know what a happy balance you have in your life and glad you have the opportunity to take a variety of classes now.

  42. Anna @ History Running Girl on October 29, 2010 at 9:47 am

i can participate in ur kind of triathlon any day!

  44. Marg on October 29, 2010 at 9:53 am

I can’t swim well, so I’m a no go for a real one.

  45. Allison @ Food for Healing on October 29, 2010 at 9:59 am

i wish i had the time to do things like that. I would definitely have zumba as one activity or possibly dance trance if i could try it and if there was ever such a thing here.

  46. Lauren on October 29, 2010 at 10:10 am

First, LOVE the tank. Must.own. Is it in Lulu stores now? Didn’t see it online.

Second, I have to say I really appreciate you posting this, knowing there might be a wee bit of backlash. I do think it’s super important to hold bloggers accountable, but I also think it’s important to recognize the ones that truly are wonderful. There’s definitely a stark difference in blogs that show balance through good, healthy eats and fitness, and enjoying life and then there’s some that plaster “healthy” all over them, and proceed to make treats with soda (soda…really?!) to cut calories, for example. To each their own, it’s their blog, I just personally find it hypocritical and naive. I really think your knowledge and outlook on living a balanced, healthy life really shows through your writing, and it’s the reason why this is the first blog I read day in and day out. You’ve sparked me to learn more about certain topics as well as eats that can improve the functioning of your body (hellooo maca obsession), and try new workouts, and for that I have to say thank you.

On a lighter note, I think my triathlon would be yoga, run and P90X plyometrics workout because Tony Horton just makes me giggle.

I read this blog frequently, and I have always been inspired by your genuine love of exercises and all things healthy.
However, I was kind of sad to see that when Jeanine commented in a less than positive light, and I have seen rude comments, I think she was actually quite civil about how she approached you, you seemed to be a bit offended, not only in your first sentence to her, which was if it makes you feel uncomfortable, โ€œdonโ€™t read itโ€ but also in your tweet, which said โ€œblog the way you live, than live the way people want to see you blogโ€.
I think she was being inquisitive, and had an interesting point, especially in light of all the recent negativity floating around the blog world. She genuinely asked for your opinion, and I see nothing wrong with once in a while having someone ask questions! I donโ€™t think she said she had a problem with your blog, she actually said she is always positive about her comments. I donโ€™t think its fair for you to tell her not to read based on one respectful and honest comment.

i totally agree that she was civil with her comment, which i totally appreciate! i love having conversations on the blog, even when we don’t all exactly agree
i misunderstood the comparison between the marie claire article, because all i could think of were the parts of the article calling out bloggers for things that i myself don’t do.
that all being said, i think it’s up to us to make good choices for what we surround ourselves with. if something makes us uncomfortable, it’s up to us to step away for a second. i felt bad that a particular post made her feel uncomfortable and all i was saying was to do what’s best for her. i didn’t mean it in a mean way, at all!

Sounds like a fun day. I noticed that they offer Jazzercise at the same place you take Dance Trance. Have you ever taken a Jazzercise class? I am an instructor and am curious to see what other fitness folks think about the class.
My idea of a triathlon would be to teach a couple of Jazzercise classes and then come home to cuddle with my dog.

mine would be really similar to yours…yoga, a trail run in the mountains, and something like body pump to round off the workout ๐Ÿ™‚

Bikram yoga (maybe 2x), then perhaps a dance class, then a really long hike ๐Ÿ™‚

    Great idea!
